I ran 5km in 17 mins. Then i got a knee injury that lastet for years. Impossible to do anything, especially running. I tried every single thing i could to make it better. I got 4 different doctors and psysio's to figure out why my knee hurt so bad. I even got all sorts of scans. I did a million different exercises with rubberbands etc. 3 years. i couldn't even get up my stairs at home some days. Suddenly, out of nowhere, it was gone. after a week or two, i went out for a slow run. Amazing. i almost cried. what a wonderful wonderful privilege i was given back. The ability to move. I'm now totally hooked on trail running. It's definetely not 17 min 5k anymore. but i could not care less. When the sun is shining and the forrestfloor is damp and i jog slowly and silently through the fresh forrest i feel so lucky. oh the joy of movement.

The rapid weight gain and “jiggle physics” is something that surprised me the last time I put on 9 kg / 20 lbs. I personally really feel it in the lower back / love handle area as that accumulates fat the quickest and is the last to leave as I lean down.
Also to note at the heavier weight it took me about 3 weeks of running before I built up my leg strength to handle the heavier weight before running didn’t always feel “heavier” and harder to do.

Totally agree. I injured myself early last year, it was a foot injury that just wouldn’t go away. Tried my best but I’ve gained over two stone. Couldn’t run/walk stand for long. Running is like that for me all the time at the moment (your dad bod 5k made me smile - it's still five minutes under mine). When I went running while on holiday in October I'd forgotten my inner shorts and the thigh chafing was a nightmare. I'd love to know how you're going to get that weight off. But I'm sure you will. This is exactly how I felt when I was pregnant with out last baby (currently 7 months postpartum and juuuust about at my pre pregnant 5k pb, 23:53, vs. 23:09)... but imagine that while you were getting bigger and trying to stay active (I continued running till I was 36 weeks+5 days, baby was born at 38 weeks and I had my doc's blessing to do so), I was getting snickers and people telling me I was hurting the baby and for me to stop being active. I kid you not, I had people stopping me on the streets telling me what I was doing was dangerous and to stop, and 'why do you think you have to do this? you don't have to!' I know that being pregnant is wonderful, and some people feel miserable during it etc. I did too at times, but I also loved running still. It was very strange. It messed with my head a lot and I actually had to remove pace from my Garmin screen, and only had heart rate visible as I ran by heart rate.
Than after the baby was born it was also exactly as you said. It was so hard going back to knowing what I used to be able to do and not being able to do it. Yes by all means of the average 35 year old female I was probably above verage, but for my own standards and what I know it was so off and messed with my head. Plus I felt like everyone was looking at me and judging me for both A, not being where I used to be and wondering what had happened, and B, why are you doing this when you have a newborn baby, you should be resting and stuffing your face. I should probably mention that we have 5 kids (age 9, 7, 5, 2.5 and 7 months old).
This was so weird and exactly what you mention about the dad bod. Such a double standard. Love this video and love how raw it is. Thank you for putting yourself through this Super Size me challenge.

Super nice zwifting rig Mark! Although you have kinda of done this for a reason, I think it is mentally good to have a bit of a down time, not necessarily at a this level, but a bit of off season allows you to reset both mentally and physically. A good thing is to actually plan it as you would plan a training plan. That way you can hold yourself accountable for getting back on it again. But a two week or a months break is not going to do that much damage and you soon get it back. Also gives you the time to think about your year ahead and generally at the end of the break you are really keen to get back to taking care of yourself. Christmas is a good time to do it as it takes out any family conflict over a social period and you can enjoy it guilt free! Your out of condition is still way way above average!

Great content as always. The thermoregulation bit really hit me, I was 84kg last summer and did Man vs Coast and loved it, fast forward 7 months, I have a 6 month old daughter and I'm 9kg heavier, textbook dad bod territory. Clothes are too tight and I'm sweating during any activity, time to get the trainers laced up again and start eating properly!

Hi Mark. If you've not got the Tron bike, or concept bike on Zwift I can recommend selecting the climb Mt Everest challenge and attacking Alpe de Zwift a few times a week until you get it. It's about 48 climbs. I did it in parallel with attempt at marathon (run) pb and got my first sub 3 hour finish plus lots of other run pbs. It got me to the leanest and lightest I've ever been. Alpe de Z is always hard graft. Good luck with the shredding

The one thing I can say however is that floating above 15% BF has done wonders to Strength and Hypertrophy when I'm lifting. Definitely have to cut back before the weather starts getting nice though.

A couple of months ago I tore meniscus in my knee meaning my half marathon training had to stop as did the Saturday morning track session. A part of me was absolutely gutted but I was slightly surprised to discover that I was also kind of enjoying the excuse to curl up on the sofa with a bag of doughnuts and a frappucino. Thankfully I have come to my senses and have started my rehab in the gym!

    • @AlanLamb11
      @AlanLamb11 4 месяца назад

Meniscus can take a long time to recover from. Supposedly 6-8 weeks and I usually heal more quickly than average but a slight meniscus tear has set me back almost 11 weeks, back in the gym but unable to run without significant swelling. Can walk and do everything else except ski pretty well but the fear of it being a permanently rehabilitating injury is real.

Amazing content. I’ve done almost exactly the same thing. Since Oct last year I’ve paid no attention to my calorie intake. As a result I’ve put on 9lb of useless baggage. Lifting weights feels no different. Running with that extra is very noticeably more difficult. Dexa booked for April. Hardest dial to turn is calorie restriction. Paying daily attention is a pain in proverbial but, in my view, it’s by far the most effective thing to focus on for improved health physical and performance.

Mark, you are on point with this one and expressing your mental picture to the viewer. The excuse that you think your feeding to perform better is so busted. You feel like crap, run like crap and your mental trauma is knocking, thinking everyone is looking and making fun of you. This was so me and when you do trim down, the hormones flip and you get confidence and ignore everyone. This is a master class in mental games and how to get clear. Do the work and screw the rest. Truly motivating to keep on it and not dad bod your life because you somehow think you have no time for it. Oh no. you do. Skip food if it's just trash. Workout 10 min instead of none. Take to dogs out. You can always and have to do that. Go run late at night, i do all the time. even just a mile. You were one that helped me last year or so. I'm on it pretty good. it's a rollercoaster. if you are high you keep going. Low you go slower or stop. Keep high and motivated. COLD SHOWERS are mandatory for me now. They are huge boosters of mental sanity and keep me going in the right direction most days.

spot on Mark. I.m 112kg now but got to 89KG for IM Bolton in 2018. two hip surgeries later, massive project at work for most of the intervening 5 years and i'm back at 112. I would say it is honestly more depressing have gone back to that weight. No matter what people say only when you've felt that heavy do you fully understand but it also takes a while if you shift a load for it to dawn on you the difference in how it feels. Totally agree with what you've said on losing it and the difference second time round. The difference this time is knowing what needs to be done not because of asthetics (I'm 44 in March and wont be winning any modelling contracts with my face anyway no matter what the bod looks like) but how much fitter and stronger i felt
I'm in training for 3 ironmans this year as well as doing the alpe d'huez triathlon (you got me by 14 minutes on alpe d'zwift)and my cycling power is significantly improved on the indoor bike but I know how even getting fitter underneath will not be enough to keep that mass moving over such a long distance so no excuses this time fat has to go and this time i cant let it ever go back after

„I‘m not sure if I have another obesity recovery in me…“ That really struck me! Coming from being overweight with lots of alcohol from age 15 until 44 (while doing lots of sports like weightlifting and different martial arts) that sentence reminded me how fast I could slip back into my old habits and what to avoid to do so, so I can stay sober and run around with 10% bodyfat at the age of almost 46 now.

It’s also a fair bit easier to get ‘back’ in shape than get there for the first time so don’t be discouraged if you’re not getting results as quickly as he will.

This goes to show how easy it is to fall off the wagon. For me the thing that keeps me 'on the wagon' is actually ensuring that being on the wagon is easy to stay on. That means making sure that i enjoy the workouts that i do and don't view them as a chore. For me exercise needs to be sustainable and my training needs to be something i still want to do on my worst days. I've started doing micro workouts throughout the day and being more flexible with what i do. Gone are the days of long gym sessions because quite honestly who wants that? I've also made small changes to my diet but its not heavily restricted - it's something that i can easily stick to, and it's not so rigid that i can't veer off track occasionally.
