      Ooohhh! That is a great one! It is totally deceptive to make a reader think the book won a prize when a different book by the same author got the prize. Totally annoying. And whew. I was starting to think I was the only one who liked deckled edges! 💛

    Yes, I too am seriously annoyed by the Oprah, Reese, GMA, etc. circles that are integrated into the cover designs. Usually, I resell those to my used bookstore, but if it’s a book I intend to keep, I cover those circles with pretty stickers of my own. I know this sounds crazy, but there are lovely gold seals produced for letter writing and also people on Etsy that make stickers specifically for this purpose. The only thing that matters is that the sticker be acid free so that it won’t harm the book and you could remove it if you want to. I feel like an author has worked so hard to produce a work of art, why should someone else’s name be in it? Also annoying is when the publisher puts a big blurb on the front which eclipses the title, especially if the blurb is from another author that I’m not keen on. To me that’s even worse.

    • @booksimnotreading
      @booksimnotreading  6 месяцев назад

      A blurb from an author you don’t like is definitely a red flag. And you are right - covering one sticker with another -even if it’s not technically a sticker - is crazy, but in a good way! 😂 So nice to hear from you! 💛

    Thanks for tagging me. the .5 in a series I find is common with Brandon Sanderson when he adds a Novella to one of his established series... like Edgedancer (The Stormlight Archive, #2.5). I stopped reading introductions to books because so many have spoilers! I save them for after I've finished the book. It's like these people assume everyone has already read it and know what happens. This annoyance is probably specific to me. I have been trying to use my library more to be fiscally responsible. My annoyance is incomplete series at my library. The local library had books 3 and 4 of a series I was keen to read but not books 1 and 2. Why would I read those before I knew what happened before? This tag has taken off like wildfire in the past week. Well done.
    I admit that a change in format has annoyed me - when Hard Case Crime books went from mass market paperback (seven inch) size to trade paperback (eight inch) size. For reissues of mid-20th century crime books, mass market paperback size really was the ideal. One could easily imagine them on a spinner rack in a drug store in 1965.

    When publishers let bookclubs buy advertising space on the covers of books like Oprah, Reese, Jenna, etc. When publishers change a consistent design like Penguin did. Good video for a distraction from life stuff. Thanks for indulging me and giving me a space to join in as I am just a subscriber and not a booktuber.
    I answered only the ones I was truly passionate about.
    2. Yes. Spoilers a no go. I try not to read the inside flaps or back of the novel.
    3. not a LFL but prices of some used book stores seem high, and a popular online store has sent me books listed as very good condition and sent two quite visibly damaged books!. They were not interested in seeing how bad the books were and to maybe train their staff to toss certain books.
    6.Again, online bookstores that do not mention the previous owners annotations or writing in the book. I do not like to find library books with writing for food stains in the book. This is one of the main reasons I like to buy my own books.
    7.When they change the size/format/design of the books within the same series.
    9. I will notice how books are shelved or not shelved. I try to shelve my books in a way that will keep them safe and in good condition. ex out of direct light, upright and not stacked to protect the spine. I personally like hardbacks and softcovers separate but it is not a necessity.
    10. I find it annoying when I start a book and then get distracted by another book and am so easily drawn to the new book. Sounds like a me problem LOL. And yes, the nonsticker sticker on the front of the book. I tried finding a copy of Tom Lake without Reese's Book Club and it was not possible. UGH!!!

    You got me with this one! One of the most annoying things that I have ever encountered was in a library book. This book was a large-scale (coffee-table sized) beautiful annotated edition of a classic that had cat hairs on nearly every page! Apparently the previous reader let their cat (or cats) walk over the book while they were reading. Since I am not a cat person, it was rather disgusting. I know it's a library book, and I don't expect the book to be in excellent condition (other people's annotations, sticky pages, folded corners, etc.), but I do have my limits!
    The other thing that annoys me is spoilers in the endnotes! I've learned not to read the Intro or the back cover, but I think that I should be able to read the endnotes (like meanings of archaic words, references to historical facts, etc.) without spoilers. This has happened with several Penguin Classic editions I have. Probably it is the fault of the specific editor for that book, but the publisher should scan the notes and remove the spoilers before it goes to print IMHO.

    Love the tag (and your smile!) About the spoilers: I prefer not having them, of course, but I do believe that a spoiler can't ruin a book if it's a great book :D Whenever I end up getting a spoiler, I remind myself of this haha.

      Hello! I agree with you somewhat. I had a classic spoiled for me, and while I still really enjoyed this book, the twist or spoiler moved my husband to tears! So what could have been an AMAZING reading experience became something less. Thank you so much for sharing! 💛

    I also hate casual twist spoiling since it completely removes the joy of being shocked!
    I like deckled edges when I feel like they fit the character of the book that they are on. I have a copy of The Complete Short Stories of Kafka and The Road by Cormac McCarthy with them and the deckled edges feel perfect for those books, but they seem strange on Pride and Prejudice. My edge of choice is dyed or dye splattered edges
    I cannot agree more on the book club branding on covers! Did Oprah pay for this print run or something? It’s annoying but I understand tie in covers having it, but unless it’s an award please just use regular stickers. I didn’t buy it from, nor am I in their club!
    I hate annotated books as well mostly because I prefer not to think about what anyone else was thinking about until I am finished reading and choose to enter the discussion! I do however love finding ephemera in used books and loved hearing it called that! I hadn’t heard the word in a while and so it tickled my brain a bit!
    I totally agree with your series examples. It would drive me bonkers if only one book in a series had a different cover design ethos and size!
    My addition is those book covers/jackets with a finish on them that makes the books feel like “soft” silicone. It makes my skin crawl while trying to hold them and I have to find a different copy of the book. It may be just me but I can’t stand the sensation!!!
    Loved this video!

    This is a fun tag! I can't wait to see others' responses to the questions. I love watching tag video sand I hope this one takes off!
    I do hate those books that have the price as part of the actual cover. Deckled edges look really cool, but they do annoy me. I like to flip to the page that I am on from the side of the book and those edges make that difficult.
    Spoilers annoy me, when they are in the description or on the cover of the actual book. I once read a book where there was an arson near the end of the book. The cover had a picture of a house that was on fire. Mary Barton by E. Gaskell was completely ruined for me by the description on the back.
    I only TRULY dislike marginalia in 2 instances. The first is when there's SO MUCH of it that it makes the actual text hard to read. The second is when you can tell that this was an assigned book for school and it is the notes made by the junior high school student for the possible test and not their actual thoughts. For example, I sometimes read books in Spanish. The marginalia I find annoying is when someone is just looking up single words in a Spanish/English dictionary and writing the English word in the margin.

      Angela, thanks for the warning about Mary Barton. It has not been ruined for me and I haven't read the back of the book. It's so maddening that you can't even read the back of a book without it being spoiled. Surely it wasn't always that way? Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts! Happy reading!

    OMG! God's nightgown Kelly the book order/numbering 2.5, 5.5, 6.5 trend is sooo annoying. By the way Slow Horses series which I know we both read have 4 novellas in they series, 2 of which aren't available to me here in OZ, I ain't got time for that! The other annoyances I can ignore or deal with. Ereaders handle well, apart from the poor decisions characters make. Like me choosing not to DNF. Okay, slow, deep breaths now...all good.

    • @booksimnotreading
      @booksimnotreading  6 месяцев назад +1

      But we know they are novellas and frankly, I am just not going to worry about the Slow Horses ones. Are we really going to miss something crucial to the whole series? I am not even if half-way through the books! Deep breaths. Be well, my friend. 💛

      @booksimnotreading but what if? My main issue is 4 novellas when the last book has been written and released into the wild I've read 2 and 3 what happened in 2.5??? Not a happy camper 😤
      They want to charge full price for a short story or couple of chapters, the nerve. Someone needs to be sent to slough house, STAT 😂

    As far as novellas in the middle of short story collections, I’d prefer them at the beginning or end. Still conflicted on deckled edges 🤔 but definitely don’t like reading books with any underlining or annotations from other people as it takes me out of the book even if I’m trying to ignore them !😉

      We bought a used book of poetry last year and it wasn’t tell we were home that we realized someone had highlighted an ENTIRE poem. Jason said they were missing the point of poetry! 💛

    You made me laugh in agreement with you on many things! I dislike blurbs on front covers. Gushing praise from writer friends, just annoying. Fine, so you are part of that gang, oh but I am not impressed. And yes introductions to classics with spoilers. But what annoys me the most is dreadful artwork on covers. On the other hand I love discovering vintage copies of classics with really of the age covers.
