A fabulous actor! Meredith was blacklisted for a decade until he starred in four Twilght Zone episodes. His portrayal of George in 1939's Of Mice And Men was riveting.

@@ronaldshank7589I would guess what every one in that time was blacklisted for - some type of involvement with communism and or commie groups also refusing to naming others - there are several movies about it - one I recall with sine humor yet also heartbreak is - THE FRONT - starring Woody Allen. It's clear Meredith (and so many of his generation) "trod the boards" at live theater stages well before they ever got in front of a camera. You are just parroting a verse from the bible written by some human who lived in a superstitious time.
In such times you could claim an entity that doesn't exist (the devil) admits another non-existent entity (God) exists and use such circular reasoning as "proof".
Such is the kind of "proof" when one tries so hard to believe something that isn't true. Only such subjective, non-falsifiable premises account for "proof" in biblical Christianity.
I somehow believed it for 40 years, preached, taught, fasted and prayed and believed it all until a serious study of the Bible (Ph D in biblical theology)and an honest conversation with myself. gave me the courage to admit that no intentional god exists. The more closely you study the bible the more human it reveals itself to be.

They're crooked because they come braided together. The shop owners gave the torcedors a daily allowance of cigars that they could smoke, but given the number of cigars around there'd be no way of knowing if they were smoking theirs or the shops. To fix it they took the three allowed and braided them together, so if the torcedor was seen smoking a perfectly straight cigar the foreman knew he was over his limit.

Those types of cigars were a real thing. Sometimes in the cigar rolling factories they’d just come out crooked. Particularly if rolled by an apprentice learning the skill. Instead of letting them go to waste, these crooked cigars, often still perfectly smokable, were soaked in rum for a time, cured, and later marketed as “Rum Soaked Crooks” at a discount price.

That's the devil's "trick." He doesn't want people to believe he exists... many professing believers(Christians) might even argue for the existence of the devil. If he doesn't exist, does God? Is the Bible true, or is the devil and the soul just a "symbol" of something? This clip is to help people realize what the devil schemes and not just to entertain others.

If I were the Devil, that would be an exactly along the line of things to "protect" you from. Lucifer did not even have to light his way, did he, all he had to do was convince the man he was not who he said he was, standing in front of him as he said it.

I like Julie Newmar's devil. First, it's Julie Newmar and she's wearing horns. Second, she says she already has the guy's soul, she wants his money. That's a trader.
As for this specific trade: very well written scene. Burgess overacts but so stylishly that it's commendable.
The contract would need a choice of law. The term "soul" would need to be defined as it is inherently ambiguous. The devil needed a better lawyer.
