- "Moths" was released in the spring of 1978 on Jethro Tull's eleventh studio album, Heavy Horses. It is considered the second album in a trilogy of folk-rock albums by Jethro Tull, although folk music's influence is evident on a great number of Jethro Tull releases.
The album abandons much of the folk lyrical content typical of the previous studio album, Songs from the Wood (1977), in exchange for a more realist perspective on the changing world. Likewise, the band sound is harder and tighter. The album reached No. 19 on the Billboard 200 album chart, and peaked at No. 20 on the UK Albums Chart. The third album in the folk-rock trilogy is Stormwatch (1979).
This album was the last studio album to feature John Glascock playing bass on all tracks.
As much as I love earlier period Tull, probably my favorite albums were released in the time between Minstrel in '75 through Broadsword in '82. I saw Jethro Tull live touring in support of this album (extremely powerful live performance as I discussed in my description for "Acres Wild"...this is my second video for a track from Heavy Horses....still working on masks, horses and the "tumblin'" sky for that epic title track!)
This has always been one of my favorite Jethro Tull songs (and there are a few! LOL!)....today it also reminds me of my son because after enduring many hours of Tull in the CD player when we were travelling, this is the song he liked the most.....even remember him asking me to play it a few times!!!!!! ;-)
I always loved this video and wanted to pump it up a bit and try and make it look better for HD.....fiddled around with parameters to lose the nasty artifacting, without completely losing the video to blur...considering the source vid I utilized (from which my zoom causes even further loss of resolution) I think the results are pretty nice....hope you agree.
As usual HUGE THANKS to everyone who's art made this new art possible....THANK YOU!!!!
[Lyrics]
Oh The leaded window opened
to move the dancing candle flame
And the first Moths of summer
suicidal came.
And a new breeze chattered
in its May-bud tenderness ---
Sending water-lillies sailing
as she turned to get undressed.
And the long night awakened
and we soared on powdered wings ---
Circling our tomorrows
in the wary month of Spring.
Chasing shadows slipping
in a magic lantern slide ---
Creatures of the candle
on a night-light-ride.
Dipping and weaving --- flutter
through the golden needle's eye
in our haystack madness. Butterfly-stroking
on a Spring-tide high.
Life's too long (as the Lemming said)
as the candle burned and the Moths were wed.
And we'll all burn together as the wick grows higher ---
before the candle's dead.
The leaded window opened
to move the dancing candle flame.
And the first moths of summer
suicidal came
to join in the worship
of the light that never dies
in a moment's reflection
of two moths spinning in her eyes.
Always great to hear this song!!
Great song great Vinil..
One of my favourite Tull songs of all time. It conjures up a mediaeval love story (for me anyway). Thank you so much!
