- "Elegy" was the closing instrumental track on Jethro Tull's 12th studio album, Stormwatch, which was released in September 1979. This album is considered the last in the trilogy of folk-rock albums by Jethro Tull (although folk music influenced virtually every Tull album to some extent). Among other subject-matters, the album touches heavily on the problems relating to the environment, oil and money.
This video features 4k UHD and (most importantly!)....a flac audio track sourced from the stunning Force 10 Anniversary Edition Box, which Steven Wilson remixed/remastered....I've listened to this album for the last 40 years and always thought the sound was a bit muddy.....finally, it's like it was meant to be heard. "Elegy" was written by David Palmer and is sometimes rumored to have been an homage to John Glascock - who was very ill at the time due to a congenital heart defect, and would die shortly after the album's release. The song is actually an elegy to David Palmer's father and is one of the few tracks on which Glascock plays.
Bassist John Glascock, suffering at this point from the effects of a cardiac infection that eventually led to his death, is only featured on three tracks ("Flying Dutchman", "Orion", and "Elegy"). Ian Anderson played bass elsewhere on the album while Dave Pegg played on the subsequent tour.
Stormwatch was notably the last Tull album to feature the "classic" line-up of the 1970s, as drummer Barriemore Barlow and keyboardists John Evan and David Palmer all left the band in the months after the Stormwatch tour concluded in April 1980, while bassist John Glascock had died from heart complications in November 1979 during the tour.
He played his last gig on 1 May 1979, in San Antonio, Texas, three years to the day of his first gig with Jethro Tull. I actually attended this concert and though I cannot say that I recall now John's playing, but he must not have been too sick, because I have always remembered Tull as being the most ridiculously great band I ever saw in concert. John was a really great bass player and I always admired his work with Tull.
The album was reissued in October 2019 in an expanded six-disc edition with a new stereo remix by Steven Wilson, several unreleased tracks, and a full concert recorded in the Netherlands in March 1980.
Dun Ringill is the historic site of an Iron Age fort on the Isle of Skye, which served as the original seat of the Clan MacKinnon. Anderson once owned and lived in nearby Kilmarie House, until he sold the estate in 1994. A sporran is a type of pouch traditionally worn with a kilt. Other tracks allude to the constellation of Orion and the legend of the Flying Dutchman.

"Elegy" is one of the most melodic and harmonical compositions by Jethro Tull, I think, along with "Home" and some others.
Also, that spider net with spider and water from rain was abstract perfection. That's something I have in mind, when I reflect on things.

Here in Chile this song is very well known as a chocolate TV ad, the brand Costa released a chocolate candy with caramelized almonds inside called Vizzio, and the TV ads released for that chocolate uses Elegy and it works perfectly. Just imagine a milked chocolate with crunchy almonds and your gonna remember this song

Superb, gorgeous genre-defying music. Subtle, yet powerful and moving, a Tull trademark. This song has a similarity to " Nobody's Home" by Kansas, a similar vibe and feel. And, as always, MGM comes through with appropriate visuals and sound. And now I'm going to go give Tull's " Stormwatch " a listen. Forgot what a great album it is.. Be well, MGM.

Evan, Palmer and Barlow didn't leave the band, they were sacked by Anderson. Barre was also sacked but Anderson later asked him to return.
