  • We had record rainfall for the past few weeks and my succulents have all been soaked and was also covered in frost. This is the first time I'll get to see the damage if any on my succulents since I was away for a month on a prospecting for gold and gemstone trip. Please come along with me as I inspect the damage on my neglected plants.

    Hi Liz! So excited to see ur video. I don't understand my succulent, my sedum donkey for example, watered it, soil still moist, but leaves are soft crinkly as if thirsty. Was wondering if soaking in water overnight will plump everything up🤔. Worried if soaking them will turn em mushy😂oh, tht dilemma! 🙄
    I'm sorry about your cante, such a loss.😭 But amazed at how positive u are. I'd mourn if it were me😂

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  3 года назад

      I've had this cante for almost five years now so maybe it's time for it to go to Cante Heaven. Much as I'd like it to live forever, they have a certain lifespan and all things come to an end. Even for a very pretty cante.
      When you say moist, maybe it's dry underneath and the roots can't form and what the moistness is doing is wetting and rotting the leaves itself.
      I have my donkey tail swimming in water when I go for my long trips and when I come back, they are all soft and wrinkly. All I do is soak them in water and after a couple of weeks, they plump back up. I have some growing underwater and forming babies. Good luck.

    Glad to see your plants are so hardy! I'm in possession of a "problem child", myself. It's called Blue Heron variegata. I purchased it from a hardware store (only ever saw the one, though) and this poor thing... It was so beautiful at first, but it became abundantly clear that it has no tolerance for being wet. The leaves rotted away and I would have given up on it if it hadn't been so willing to produce pups. Now it's just a stump with three tiny babies growing off of it. I have high hopes for them, though. Their color and forms are lovely, so clearly the stump is giving them some sort of support.

    Liz, you're crazy, girl! You took the dead leaves of your Echeveria cante and still laughs. If I were with me I would be all tears. La Nina Climatic Phenomenon is on the run again on coast of Peru. For Brazilian Southern Region it means lack of rain and colder conditions than normal and this is exactly what we are having here. It's normal to have a sequence of several days of heavy rain and coldness here, but this year we have one or two days of wet weather and that's it. Several weeks of sunny, cold (very cold) days. Good for succulents (there's no doubt, they are thriving, very colourful) but bad for the crops (except some winter plantings) and very bad for energy generation (Brazil uses hydroelectric energy, basically). I have to use the heating at maximum last month. So I almost had a heart attack when my my bills came out last week. It doubled. And new polar monster front is coming for Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Southern Brazil this weekend and the met says this cold came to stay until the middle of August, without any fresh. Sunday to Wednesday we shall have the first heavy frozen here in my town this winter. We had freezing conditions here before, since May, but the normal ones. Now it's different. Gosh! At least, with little or no rain. Let's see what happens, how my plants will stay and how much of money I will spend 😱. Take care, Liz and take a large amount of hot coffee, girl!

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  3 года назад +1

      Only ever had one plant with root nematodes. I bought it from a shop and after a couple of months, the plant started yellowing/dying and I couldn't work out why until I remove the soil and saw some roots that are knotted and deformed.
      I got rid of the whole plant and soil by pouring boiling hot water on the entire pot. This prevents/kills the nematodes from infesting my other pots and worst the garden. Nematodes can lay dormant for years if not killed.

    Hi Liz, I have been watching your Video and have followed your advice of using “seaweed extract” (Pollar feed root dip soil drench). I have use this to soak plants that have dry roots. Some time it works, but some time it kills my plants. Any suggestions you can give me is greatly appreciated.

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  2 года назад +2

      There are many reasons why a plant will die and not necessarily due to the seaweed solution. I find that more plants struggle without them. Soil mix, fresh cuttings, cuttings too young, seaweed solution too strong, stress, season they were cut(too hot or too cold) can be factors in plants dying.

      I've been a gardener all my life, but only 7 years of experimentation since I started growing succulents for my garden. To me, they are like people. Some I remember the name, others I have to rely on the labels. The number of holes I drill depends on the size and shape of the pot and the plants that's going in it. Thanks very much for watching Amy, and hope you'll find my videos useful.

      @@GrowingSucculentswithLizK I think the garden you have amassed in only 7 years is beyond amazing.
      I ordered a bunch of books on succulents to try to increase my knowledge.
      If you ever decide to offer a tour of your garden please let me know. I always thought Australia was a neat place to go but never had a reason to go there. I have heard the word succulent all my life but did not understand much about them and I was not much of a cactus person. Now that I have learned more about succulents I am completely awe struck. They are so much beautiful than flowers even as they stay with their beauty all the time.
      Your arrangements are outstanding, the beautiful gem stone rocks you add to each one are the cherry on the top. It sounds like from your comments in the videos you actually go find them all you and your husband. That is so neat.
      How long did it take you to arrange your garden area? Well I guess I mean your shelves that you hold all of your plants on? Did it take you several versions before you found the best way?
      I noticed now you have shade cloth for some sections. I never thought of making your own shaded areas.
      I am just getting started in my succulent collection. We have only lived in our new house a year. I am very happy to have found your videos so early on in my journey. I think your videos should give me so much education and tips to be able to make my own garden with succulents.
      We are taking about enclosing our pool with windows and glass walls essentially. It is a moveable structure that can open or close when needed. It would be perfect for having my citrus trees by the pool so they would be protected from freezes. So then that would leave me lots of places to put succulents all around the trees and any other landscaping areas.
      I will be going to buy some crushed rocks today or very soon and I am going to redo all of my succulents I have planted so far in pots to have a top layer of rocks now. Your videos helped me to understand how important it is for them. Now seeing some of my succulents suffering rot from touching the dirt even though it is not wet very often.

    Idk if this will help but I tried the seasoil Solution, I beg my Aunt's husband to bring some when they return to the PH lmao, but it didn't gave protection against fungus and rot unlike folicur (systemic fungicide), it's not a fertilizer but a protection I've tried it on 2 Monroe one I use folicur and both went through 5 days of intense rain then super sunny morning, but as expected the Monroe I use folicur is alive but the other one did not, it's good for many rain to protect the plants, and I'm not saying the seasoil is bad, it's amazing and how it can make my plant bloom, that's all I hope it helps

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  3 года назад

      SEASOL IS NOT A FUNGICIDE BUT A SOIL CONDITIONER. It gives plants better "resistance" (not prevent) fungal attack. Fungus infection and plant diseases is due to pathogens in the soil and are spread by via other plants or in the air. They thrive in humid, moist/wet soil and/or poorly ventilated areas. They can lay dormant for years waiting for the right condition to grow.
