To bring Milwaukee batteries back from the dead is really easy, just connect a live battery to your dead battery and let it recharge it back to normal volts for the charger to recognize it

Not that I haven't given it a "full send" in a pinch but 18650s have enough stored energy to give someone a really bad day. Rule of thumb for those who (and I encourage it) play with them: charge and discharge at less than 1C, recovery at less than 0.1C. Ray, Dont trash your power tool batteries. Do a search for saving those batteries that are too "dead" to charge. I have the same issue with my nail gun batteries, all i do is use a regular car charger and hold the + & - leads on the terminals and bring the battery voltage up to a level that will allow it to take a charge. May need to keep on charge all the time, but cheaper than buying new ones. Hope this helps.
do not do this the reason that Li battery chargers wont recharge over drawn batteries is because when you over draw them it actually causes damage to the cell inside thus increasing the chances of explosion or fire
111smd is correct. All batteries rely on chemical reactions between the Anode, Cathode, and Electrolyte. Lithium Ion batteries exist in a delicate balance within a window of roughly 3.0V to 4.0V. While there will always be some degradation over time, exceeding these values will result in a rapid buildup of undesired chemicals on the anode or cathode. These undesired chemical reactions result in a decay into a flammable gas inside the battery, and the crystalline buildup continues to grow outward from the electrodes. If the buildup manages to form a bridge from one to the other, you get a short creating a spark inside the sealed battery, which now containins a pressurized flammable gas. Bypassing the charging safety control which locks it out once it goes below 3.0V is a permanent safety risk that doesn't reverse once the battery is recharged.
BigClive has done some research into this and found that common Li cells are not damaged by discharging down below 2.0 volts. However, if the cells in a pack become unbalanced and one or more of the cells gets reversed biased, then damage occurs. Tool batteries don't have individual cell monitoring, so it's a significant risk to charge the pack if it's series voltage is low. If there's one bad cell, charging the pack to "full charge" can burn your house down. For relatively new battery packs, it's likely one can safely force charge the pack back over the low threshold, but it does carry some risk. I'd suggest caution and I would jump a charged pack to the "over-discharged" pack with 20+ gauge wire if a field repair is needed.
@@frankhage1734 makita does have individual cell monitoring. If there is a big imbalance in the pack the real charger will refuse to charge them regardless of if you precharge them. You should use a slow trickle charger to do the initial charge to 3V/cell, the current should be no more than C/10 or you could damage the batteries. Definitely don't just hook a car battery charger to them unless it has a special trickle charge mode.

G'day from Australia. Your initial diagnosis steps took me back to a Mazda I had in the early 1980's. It had just had its 20,000km service and I was driving home giving it a few revs - probably around 5,000rpm when it made a loud bang and stopped. The engine would still turn over on the starter but didn't sound right - sort of hollow. I also removed the oil cap to view the cam and it wasn't moving. It was picked by the dealers for what was luckily a warranty repair. Apparently a bolt dropped out of the oil pump which was then thrown up into the cam chain and destroyed it. A couple of new valves and cam chain rebuild later, it was back on the road in a couple of days although wouldn't rev past 4,000rpm. Ended up the valve timing wasn't correct after the repair. Big thanks for the merchandise department. I saw the shameless promos for the Wife Unit gear and hastily ordered a couple of shirts, a mug and a bag for my wife unit's birthday. Thanks to the the great service they ended up here in country Queensland a week after ordering right on her birthday. I considered getting her a wobbly bits shirt but didn't. Turns out she would have liked it. Keep up the great work and interesting narratives.

Hi Ray, the 3rd gen MX-5 (NC), if you haven't found out, likely has a cracked coolant expansion tank and a blown head gasket due to overheating. Very common failure in these cars. I have one in my garage with the same problem that I'm putting back together.
@@grandplatplays341 lol 😆 I'm waiting for mine to blow I'm currently running a 2.0 with a fab9 gt turbo kit pushing 14psi so I'm sure it's bound to happen
Ray, would have loved to have seen the condition of the engine oil. Was wondering if you were worried about some sort of head gasket failure. So used to seeing the dreaded milk shake from engine oil and coolant, kinda odd to see trans fluid in the coolant instead. Great job by you guys btw, you seem to be getting settled in to the new life!
+a million on that one, Ron. Customer stated keeps adding coolant. Is it all leaking out of the compromised radiator? Customer also stated unable to find leak - which, at the very least, implies no puddles in driveway. Likely also implies coolant is not leaking at a rate that would have it blown back onto and then dripping from other components (also did not appear to be the case in the video). IDK how much extra - and completely incorrect - fluid that transmission can contain before it begins leaking out, friction surfaces become non-functional, and vehicle can no longer be driven... but that state of existence has not been attained - so, again, where went the coolant (plus all the additional that customer kept having to add)? Check oil, soonest, for level and presence of coolant. Result may strongly suggest checking for head gasket, or even head/block issue. I would want to know these things because, without this information, customer has insufficient data and cannot determine whether repair is worthwhile. IOW, if 105-year old grandmother is on life support due to multiple organ failure, repairing her denture set is contraindicated. . . .
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family Ray. I really enjoy your videos and your attitude towards work and it seems that your own shop was best way for you to go, especially when you have the support of your awesome wife unit. As a helicopter AME of nearly 50 years, I know a bit about being a mechanic and trouble shooting, especially of the electrical sort. That said, I have learned a bunch from you about injection and environmental systems and their associated sensors. Thanks for that. One other thing, being from Northwestern Ontario in Canada where they start salting the roads in November and stop in April, I am green with envy when I see the under side of 10 and 15 year old Florida cars. Annual under coating works wonders as far as preservation goes but it makes vehicles pigs to work on. Take care, be well and be happy.
That cobalt was in an accident. Replaced bumper cover and dents on the front of the hood. That is most likely when the communication between the two fluid started. They probably didn't see any leaks, so they didn't think it would be a problem.
I was thinking it had a bonk on the front as well based on those small hood dents. Almost looks like something fell on it / it hit something higher and shoved it down vs pushed back.
So, what you have is an oil in water emulsion (oily trans fluid/in antifreeze-water) in cooling system, and a water in oil emulsion (antifreeze-water/trans fluid) in the transmission. Surfactants make these milkshakes stable, where in they don't separate out with time. There is some crazy surface chemistry that is involved here, that have books written about it. Don't ask me how I know. But like you say Ray "Not good!" in this particular situation.
Ray, I once worked for a shop that was a few blocks away from an auto auction. The people would roll the cars downhill and coast into the parking lot. They all said “I need a tune-up,” as if spark plugs and adjustments would repair a no-compression and a bad battery problem. Before the customer left, I would test the battery and look for the MIL light to illuminate. If the customer would not agree to bring a battery, or if no money light I would closen zee hood and give them 24-hours to remove the car. About 75% of the vehicles needed engine work and/or wiring repair. I didn’t stay there long.
There is a way to get the batteries to charge again. You just need to "jumpstart" them with another fully charged battery until they are above the minimum charge level. Works most of the time for me. Beware, there is a chance the battery will have issues (ie ignite) when being charged from a very low state.
I have read that the problem with that is that the "may ignite" can occur at some unknown future point in time (assuming battery is lithium ion). And that the ignition, being inside a sealed and (at the time of ignition) pressurized case, may resemble an explosion. And that a lithium fire is not easy to extinguish quickly, especially if all you happen to have on hand is water. Recommend against this procedure, as homeowner's policy may disallow payment when root cause of fire was negligence involving defeating safety function of battery/charger by the insured.
Cascade powder works great to flush oil out of a cooking system with no damage to components. Fill with water and cascade, warm it up, drain, rinse and repeat as needed. Did this on caterpillar engines all the time that like to blow oil and egr coolers with excellent results.
The standard of vehicles being worked upon has certainly nose-dived, but that makes great content. I wonder how Ray feels about working on these multi-problem vehicles?
I think the majority of the vehicles are the used car dealer that works from the same yard, I think the vehicles will improve as his business grows and he and wife unit get some flow of work through the doors. The business is very young.
The cobalt will definitely need a transmission rebuild. The clutch material absorbs the water and makes the adhesive holding the clutch material to the metal parts fail. Even if it seems to shift fine now, it will fail in a short time. Don't hide this from the customer. Just replacing the radiator and flushing the trans will be a temporary fix.
"Hello, Ray's Auto Clinic. Yes, of course, he's serious. You do? You have? No kidding? Let me slot you in for tomorrow. Of course he'll be totally discreet. Thank you!" (Rings bell) "WE GOT ONE!"
Hey Ray if you are interested there are some facts about the mixtures we saw in this video. Those mixtures between water(coolant in this example) and oil (engine oil or transmission fluid) are caled emulsions and are in fact heterogeneous mixtures. Water and oil can't be turned in a homogeneous mixture. What has hapeneh here is thanks to the high rpm one of the fluids has turned into smal drops with have been dispersed in the other fluid. If you leave said mixture it should separate over time into its components. Have a great day.
So I’m doing some shopping at harbor freight this morning and when I was getting back in my car the car next to me had its window down and the guy sitting in the car was listening to something. The voice sounded familiar so I had to listen a little more intensely and finally had to ask, IS THAT RAINMAN ? Can you believe it. I told him I listen everyday and he also really enjoys your Chanel too. I thought that whole incident was crazy.
That internal trans cooler failure is somewhat common on mid 2000s GM vehicles. My 2004 GMC Denali transmission cooler failed at 65,000 miles and ruined the transmission. A new GM radiator installed and 4 complete trans fluid flushes (no machine) were performed but ultimately the trans was toast.
I love your videos and it makes me wanna become an mechanic because I am an car and truck guy and I am always learning something new every day watching your videos
Ray you can salvage your tool batteries that went down to much. They can be restarted. I did mine. RUclips shows how. You jump them with another battery/ charge/then they are just like before. Great trick!!!!!
Have found in many trans/coolant contaminated systems that flushing and cleaning them both can get the vehicle going, but in alot of them the transmissions shit them selfs late on down the track. Only way to save it is a full trans rebuild or second hand replacement. Cheers G man
If your tool battery will not charge in the factory charger, then it is below the minimum voltage to initiate the charge. However, if you have an identical charged battery, you can use it to jump the dud by connecting each terminal on the dud to the same position terminal on the good battery and let it go for several hours. It may boost the dud back to the minimum level needed to activate the OEM charger. Both batteries will need to be charged.
They have uses but not always good, because your truck appears to be your main work truck now, would it be worth having a dedicated power output on with like a big waterproof Anderson plug?
At 9:00am doing shots of espresso for every time ray says "Compression." This is not gonna end well. I might just be able to outrun the "roller Skate."
As far as the roller skate I would check it to see any telltale signs of a nitrous hookup cuz if that's the case they blew the heads right off of the car have a good day Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Free tip : store your tool kits on their edge so you can get them without unstacking them and write what they are on the ends of the box with a paint pen for quick reference.
Needs more people first. If you get a bigger shop but load the stalls with cars you can’t work on (because there’s only one mechanic), you’re paying more rent but not bringing in more revenue.

Brought to you for some feedback ! Learn from my mistakes ! The Cobalt is “not “ a fix, if you want to sleep @ night ! Good video ! Welcome to my world ! lol
Humm… I somewhat agree, but seriously at the end of the day with all those problems it’s a “junk”
I like it better now that you are running your own auto repair shop, it’s nice to see you having more time with your wife and kids. Your wife-unit seems to be a big help around the shop. Wish you and your family the very best, and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
But I still miss the phone. Cut and paste some audio from some old videos into these new ones
So I don’t forget. Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas 🎄

Many compliments to you for your Lady. She's so nice and cute! Please, tell her not to be embarassed, it's a honour for us to know and see her helping you!
And, amazing job, as usual.
A full shop! That's a great thing to see, Ray.
Not when they are taking up both hoists & not getting fixed & out the door.
If I wake up and find you posted a new video, I save it to watch with my breakfast. Both informative and entertaining.
Your honesty and integrity shine through. Your family must be very proud. Blessings to all of you.
Thanks for the Post Ray, the Miata is now a giant milkshake machine lol

glad the boss lady is along for the ride with ya and the shop looks like its getting busy... keep up the great content and hope you have a great holiday season with the fam
You're a lucky man brother. The wife unit is super sec'y and she supports you in your endeavours. You should be proud. You both make a killer team. I love learning from you.... Keep it up.

Ah, a granite shop. I have been wondering what that racket was!
Guess you could call it rock music
That was punny.
"Take a drink every time I say 'compression.'" WAYYYYY ahead of you, Ray!
Love the 90’s stereo. And it’s still there! Most faces were lost to time. Lol. Might want to call a stereo museum you got a complete unit. Hehe.
Good job, Ray! Thanks for posting for us!

I think he saved the spark plug just to show the customer what's going on in the engine that's just an assumption of my part but I was free his family
Actually it's not putting the hose clamp back on that concerns me
That Jaguar is a beauty. I understand these are quite sensitive and complicated cars (more practical people would use some different words), but it is really nice to see such creatures still running.
Thanks Ray! Wishing you, the Wife Unit and the ankle-biters a fantastic Christmas and a prosperous New Year! Totally made up seeing you with your own shop and I pray that it is a massive success!!!
Are you referring to the mosquitoes as ankle-biters?
@@vincentgotter4669 Nah - the kids! :D
I remember those, but do you remember pullouts?!!? Lol let’s just carry the entire stereo with us when we leave the car parked lol then they went to removable face plates. Then the faces rotated around. Then they went to a big screen that slides out and folds forward. Then they went back to regular stereos. Full circle again. Lol now they just make trucks with half the dash a touchscreen.

Hi Ray, the 3rd gen MX-5 (NC), if you haven't found out, likely has a cracked coolant expansion tank and a blown head gasket due to overheating. Very common failure in these cars. I have one in my garage with the same problem that I'm putting back together.
Hello fellow nc owner lol so true I really wanted to say shoulda replaced the coolant tank now it's time for a 2.5 swap
@@Painstrungbmx My 2.5 is sitting on a pallet having a staring contest with the car lol

IOW, if 105-year old grandmother is on life support due to multiple organ failure, repairing her denture set is contraindicated. . . .
Glad to see everything coming to fruition Ray. You also sound more relaxed. The wife unit needs to lose her embarrassment. Keep up the good work.
🤣 so the 'wife unit' actually has a name 🤣🤣🤣Hello Lauren 👍
We had Matt’s like that when I worked on the boats, they are awesome for picking up oil and such
Well done Ray and wife unit

Always a good vid when the wife unit makes an appearance!

I have the same tool from Snap-on. Been putting it in the same box for over 30 years. A good tool will pay for itself if you take care of it.
No compression miata?
Did they somehow float the valves and bend all of them?
That wouldn't put coolant in the cylinder, at least a head gasket.
Different car.
The goo came out of the cobalt.
That cobalt was in an accident. Replaced bumper cover and dents on the front of the hood. That is most likely when the communication between the two fluid started. They probably didn't see any leaks, so they didn't think it would be a problem.
It’s a good thought.
Agreed. Shake the cooler enough to start an internal leak, but no external leak.
Yay! I fixer! Dude, the family rocks, and happy holidays.
Its really good to see you so busy!

Wife unit is doing a great job 😉👏🏻
Keep up with these little extended SHORTS. I approve.👍👍

That poor Miata lived a hard life.
Wife Unit is very cute, lucky guy Ray! 👍
I love your videos and it makes me wanna become an mechanic because I am an car and truck guy and I am always learning something new every day watching your videos
Why is it so difficult to find any compression in Ray’s shop today?
Starting his own shop has different rates of compression than being a wage slave. The difference has yet to kick in.
Ray you can salvage your tool batteries that went down to much. They can be restarted. I did mine. RUclips shows how. You jump them with another battery/ charge/then they are just like before. Great trick!!!!!
Ray tell your wife she’s doing a great job and not too be embarrassed. We like seeing the family on camera at least I do.

Have found in many trans/coolant contaminated systems that flushing and cleaning them both can get the vehicle going, but in alot of them the transmissions shit them selfs late on down the track.
Only way to save it is a full trans rebuild or second hand replacement.

Free tip : store your tool kits on their edge so you can get them without unstacking them and write what they are on the ends of the box with a paint pen for quick reference.
Ray and the Wife unit just got started out, and it looks like they need a bigger shop already.
Needs more people first. If you get a bigger shop but load the stalls with cars you can’t work on (because there’s only one mechanic), you’re paying more rent but not bringing in more revenue.
@@StrongDreamsWaitHere it's like I said, he needs a bigger shop, so that's what he did, he expanded his shop.
