I'm more of a computers kinda guy now, but I'll be damned if watching your videos doesn't make me long for those teenage weekends when my spare time was filled with axle stands, engine blocks, and the sound of power tools. Much love from this old English man to you and yours. Hope you're also having a great day.
It's not too late...

I hear you. IT job pays my bills to include maintenance and repair on my cars. However when I was younger and poorer I use to do my own repairs and maintenance. However, during the pandemic that force full time telework, the extra 4 hours a day I got back from commutes gave me time to start doing my own repairs maintenance again. Fluid exchange, radiator replacement, spark plug replacement, brake pads and rotors, etc. Slowly going back to the office so some of the more extensive repairs will need to go to the shop. RUclipsrs like Rainman, The Car Care Nut, Chris Fix, and others are great motivators.
@@CeasarBergonia during lock down /furlough i found the enthusiasm to finish of my BSA A10 paint every fence panel and shed cant wait to retire asap
Loved the video. That disconnected vent tube was all the clue you needed. You were thorough and confirmed it before you went tearing it apart. You the man!
Rainman Ray gives the chutzpah for us old gizzards of 65 yrs young. At least I pretend to be 30 watching his videos. Never a dull moment. Love ur content Ray. Keep up the great work. Keep them coming. “Nice and shiny”
Good that you got the wife unit involved. Even greater that you saved the customer from an alignment. That would make me a return customer
11:00 The you were describing how you were going to get access to that actuator, I thought you were dreaming, but, wow! how beautifully it all swung around to reveal the actualor. Well worth watching this RUclips.
The power of those Milwaukee battery powered impacts is just absurd. In a good way. It's insane the amount of progress we have made in battery powered tools in a decade. Love it!
And that’s a seasoned tool too. I personally run DeWalt for all my tools at home, but I have a few Milwaukee tools for work.
The angled one isn't. I have the same one and it's supposed to be 250 ft. pounds and the torque test channel says more like 150
@@Clearanceman2 Cry me a river. Even 150 is unexpected.
I have run Makita tools back to when everything had cords now they don't that has been my progress in the shop in last decade lol.
Milwaukee is garbage
Ray and the wife unit. I enjoy how you show how to diagnose a problem using the basic techniques. Also love how the wife unit is there helping you out in the office plus workshop when needed. So, glad you've got your own workshop now and got the family behind you. All the very best
As a grandpa I enjoy watching the family interaction and especially loved the little units. Watching them want to help just warms my heart.
Did you refill the diff lube.😱
Good morning from Northern Ireland folks 👍🏻

Good day to you sir from the u.s.

Good morning lads from u.s
Its always a great day, watching Raymond
Solve a problem in the morning.
He figur out whats is problem. Make car go.
You have a beautiful willing assistant!
"HAVE A GREAT DAY"!
There is a very good life lesson in every Ray Unit and Lauren Unit video. Before any action is taken... step back, determine a course of action, start with the easiest solution to the problem, analyse, correct course of action if needed, analyse again THEN begin the solution. Ray has a very logical approach and uses his 'talk it out' skills to the max. Brain time is high but actual repair time is low. He, and Lauren, have a very refreshing approach to business and auto repair. Let's wish they are profitable and successful. Thanks Ray and Lauren.
In the beginning with any project if you come up with a good plan of action and have tools and material available and instead of just throwing a parts cannon at it have a great day
The one thing that I have noticed since you have your own shop, is that you do not seem to have a lot of people come in and say, "no, don't fix it". Most seem to want you to fix their car's problems due to the trust that they have in your work, effort and ethics.
I would trust ray in a heartbeat to work on my van
One other thing i noticed is his tool cart isnt as cleaned off all the time lol 😂
Excellent job of diagnosing with minimal teardown! You are amazing! Most dealership service agents would simply replace the drive train!
Your customers must be pleased that they can see what you've done exactly.
Lots of other garages would be worried about what we see.
In my opinion, a honest mechanic isn't afraid of videos or questions. Because they can back up their work with proof of the job.
Im 61 , retired , not a mechanic, but like motorized vehicles of all sorts. You give me confidence I didnt think possible. Just did a waterpump on my rusty old 07 v6 escape . Thanks. Great stuff.
He inspires me as well thank you Ray
You’re ready for the big show now. Head gaskets 😅
When I was 16 I did a water pump/timing belt on my civic. Learned real quick I don’t like FWD cars lol. Next was a head gasket on a Supra. Wasn’t nearly as bad as I made it out to be.
I get ultra frustrated when my wind shield wiper won’t come off easily. Can’t image the brain aneurism I would have doing what you do EVERY day. Good on ya. Cheers from 🇨🇦
Awesome Ray, what a great couple you guys are.
A+ on communication with wife unit. That was a really interesting video.
You and Lauren make a great team, Ray! Thanks for the steady flow of automotive inspiration!
It is Great that you and your wife work great together
You two are officially my favorites on RUclips. Thank you Ray and Lauren for these great videos!
This is a prime example of why a stick and a bit of linkage is the best 4wheel drive actuator.
ok so by that logic do you also not have power assisted brakes, power steering or electric headlights, as one could argue the same logic. candles in the headlights were by far less hassle than canbus wired electric HId lights.
@@Steve211Ucdhihifvshi brakes still work if vacuum boost stops. Steering still functions if hydraulic assist stops.
There's a big gap between candles and CAN bus controlled headlights. A simple switch to apply power works great and did for decades, you could even have a relay too to keep the switch current lower.
Hat tip to you Ray for making sure you got the door for your wife. Great team!
I like it that you also take the damage equipment apart to see its failure. Also, let’s the viewer know what was the cause of the problem and how to fix it to prevent future failure. And yes, we think it was the vent tube due to the lift. It was an extender resulting in damage of electrical equipment always happens with brake lines, and such so very true, a point, that’s always overlooked when installing a lift or doing any type of modification gotta think about the small stuff. You’re doing a great job. Wish you the very best on your entrepreneurship. Take care.
I've always taken stuff apart to figure out how it's supposed to work, and to figure out why it failed,, and when still had the shop, to ease explanations to inquisitive customers when informing them of why certain things were done and how
I just got my son one of these FJ’s 07 200,000 miles runs like a top ! So i found this really interesting, thanks Ray ✌️
Kept thinking towards the end if you'd remember to refill the oil. And you did! Really fine video Ray. Thanks. I would have liked to see how you extended the vent tube.
yeah had the same unresting thought towards the end of the video
Me too. I was getting ready to add the comment when the text appeared on the screen. Don’t do that to us Ray😂
🥰For you and the wife unit.
Really cool to see how that system works. Thanks for taking the extra time to show the fork and collar and disassembly of the failed actuator.
That background train might be your new "do de do"?
running a business and having family support is so critical. positive attitudes go along way.
Hey Ray the Angle of The Dangle!!! Working in Your Favor!!!; )
Good Repair nice looking Fj cruiser as well @Rainman Ray's Repairs
I was going to Reeee about the gear oil but it was not needed.
To extend the vent hose is a good idea. I like to cut off about a half inch off the hose for a tight fit on the connector as the hose will usually fall off otherwise. Good idea to blow through the hose to make sure that it is open on the other end. Sometimes they are not.
The ending with you and Wife Unit was so cute! She can now complete your sentences 😂
This was the fastest repair I've seen you do since I've been watching your video's.
Thanks, Ray. We need more Mrs. Rainman!
So satisfying to see so clearly what caused the failure. Thanks for doing the autopsy when you can and there isn't a core provision on the replaced part.
You are amazing Ray. Great job. From a 70 year old retired steel worker from Michigan now living in Colorado Springs, Colorado. PEACE
its all ways useful to have a "handy helper" love the content thanks guys
I'm in the Philippines now, but I still enjoy your logical approach in repairs. I think you would make a great computer programmer! 🙂
My day isint complete if i don't see you doing these awesome repairs. 😎
I have to admit that you're one of the funniest mechanics I know on RUclips.
Any time we get to see the wife unit in the video makes it an awesome video. Great work as usual ray.
mmm did you remember to refill the diff? Yet another great video!
heh reminds me of my 66 IHC manual, says to change the pumpkin oil every time you ford deep water, due to the vent tubes. good job!
I did lifts for a while and too many of the lift kits didn't include a vent tube extension. I kept tubing and the plastic splices to extend them just for the reason you found..nice!
Great repair, I love your attention to detail, rare among mech. Most just want to make the flat-rate time, make the bucks and move on to the next job. Also, a bonus to see the titan rachet I sent you put to use 7:17.
Good morning everyone hope y'all have a good day and rest of your week
It's always nice to see you and your wife unit together working on car's. A nice family, with a nice business doing nice things together on RUclips. Nice.
Nice job and great that you could sneak it out without pulling other parts off.
Great job Ray. Found two major issues and fixed them. Wife unit assist was nice to see. Stay safe.
Reeeeee..... I'm glad you remembered the 'And Add Oil' note at the end😎🤣🤣🤣
Last fall my Suzuki KAI truck refused to shift into 4x4 and my front axel's modulator looked exactly like the one you opened.
In my case parts for my gray market truck were too far away to get my 4x4 going in a decent time frame (NWArctic Alaska)
I managed to free the motor and clean the contacts and have 4x4 for this winter.
The module will be replaced this summer.
Nice! I love it when a plan comes together! 🔧
Another good one, Ray. I learn a lot from your vids. I’ve done all the wrenching on my ‘78 MG for about 28 years, and occasionally I hit a show-stopper that could have easily been overcome with simply the right socket extensions, wobbly sockets, you name it. The proper tools make such a difference, so thanks for showing us the right way to do things. Plus, it gives me an excuse to buy new tools. 😊
A realle awesome repair, especially without taking the arnor plate off, well assisted by wife unit.
I will have a beer on that one.
Very good troubleshooting skills Ray!!! The whole time you were putting it back together I was saying vent hose-vent hose-vent hose! Good video!!
So impressed how you deduce electrical problems and trouble shoot mechanical obstacles.
Very nice to have a shop helper.
The Wife Unit looks good in an FJ. This repair could get very expensive! 😎
Very enjoyable to watch.
Thanks for taking apart the actuator so we can see the problem and how it broke nice job.
Now that is a beefy aftermarket undercarriage/lift kit. Should get Lauren to help with all your video closings. Was great.
Funny with 4WD: from 1988 to 1994 we had a 1994 Jeep Cherokee with 4WD and 5-speed transmission, and I was NEVER able to figure out if one had to be stopped to engage or disengage the 4WD. We hardly ever had need to use the 4WD, but I did pull over and stop to engage or disengage that. Owner's manual, calls to Jeep dealer never made such stuff clear, and that was before Google....
Great job Ray! Love to see your mind at work, and seeing Wife Unit happily lend a hand is so simple and awesome. Great team!
Ray,great repair,and with a Nice assistent!
Very Nice couple!
Love your video’s
Hvl.
Ray, The inside of your head is such a happy place ! - and you share it all with us folk.
With much appreciation and admiration from Kent, a south east county of the UK
Absolutely brilliant. If he can't get it out, nobody can.
Also, really interesting about the mechatronic. German cars also use these kind of systems for the clutches and gears to make a manual box automatic. They also fail.
Gotta love it when you put some time into a repair, and get a solid good result!
I admire the way you can look at the whole situation and can see what can be removed/manipulated/rearranged to get the job done. You can be a master chess player.
Thanks!
You help us understand why labor at times is so expensive.
That looks like a Sub frame Drop and Diff Drop Kit on that Fj cruiser lift @Rainman Ray's Repairs
I just bought a 2015 Tacoma and hope it stays all good as long as I'm alive.....im 60yo and it should.
Wish it was an MT....this is the first AT vehicle I have owned since 1983.....
Thank you for the shout-out, Ray @ 13:52
Actual Actuator Actuation, Absolutely Amazing 😁 cool video and confirmed kill. The diag was very informative also. WTG Ray👊
Excellent diagnosis, installation of the bad component-and I had a tartar sauce gravity today! Great video!
I Learned Something Today! Thanks Ray
Well done!!!! The help from the wife unit was awesome!!!
Another nice vlog, now almost weekend.
who knows what we're going to do jolly.
the easiest way of remembering where things go is to play the video back when i was doing things on cars i would take pictures especially of brake drums because there are so many springs in them and you had to get every thing right and nice to have the click's back ,
thanks for the video
❤Great video Ray an Lauren❤
Just give it a tappy tap tap. Lol
Ray is like a magician with a lovely assistant.❤
All I can say is you had better keep Lauren happy. Dang she is so nice and kind
Proud of you for using the Hondabond HT I sent you on this job. It's the best there is
we love Ray, he is a true mans man nowaday
thank you Ray,a very productive part 2,,have your selves a great day,,👍👍
I’m working on one of these on my Tacoma right now, the hose is supposed to be that short. My actuator motor is actually getting rebuilt before I put everything back together. I ordered a kit with new grease, orings, and crush washers online.
I'll bet this issue is common on FJ forum discussions. What a laborious repair.
Great dedication and persistence !!! Remember the eye protection when working underneath especially !!! Nice to show us the failure of the faulty actuator part. Let's just say that I could've handled the water leakage part - but no way on the 4WD repair !
If you have an FJ and I do, check your breather tubes. My rear locker servo is dead because of water ingress. Its almost a Jeep thing.
This is why Ray's a good mechanic. By process of elimination (through testing), he pinpointed the correct part that failed. It would not surprise me anyone else would have diagnosed a failed transfer case and by replacing everything else, they would have replaced that actuator too.
My first thought in the original video was the transfer case linkage had somehow come loose. But the lights on the dash and the turning drives driveshaft proved that not to be the case.
For whatever it is worth, Robby Layton was expounding on the virtues of those Knipex (angry) pliers in his video today.
Good call on the actuator, proven by taking it apart and seeing pure rust.
This was so satisfying to watch. Another adversity overcome. Good stuff Ray

You are so lucky. So many people here willing to say you are doing it wrong. Even if you are not.
Nice methodical working which is paid off once again great job Ray😊
Hey Ray and wife unit i wish you A great Day 😃 from Denmark
Excellent use of the ratchet strap !
Sweet, nice job, you would think they would put the Differential vent tube in on the top and away from the most Vulnerable place, Like the electronic Actuator. I could see it has a snorkel, so you know they are going in deep water or mud.🙂
Thank you for sharing so much of your knowledge.
