  • This is a 1965 (?) or 1966 (?) television special with Mary Martin as she toured Hello Dolly! to Japan, Vietnam and London. This is the final 6 minutes of the show and it is quite moving as she sings the title tune of this great musical with special lyrics for the soldiers.
    Enjoy this rare video clip.

Mary Martin is like a beam of sunshine. So gracious, real. What an entertainer. This is so touching.

The one and only Mary Martin. So talented, so gracious, so sorely missed. This is what real talent looks and sounds like.

what an undertaking to take that musical to vietnam...and how grateful those soldiers must have been.

What a magnificent woman. I was fortunate to have seen her sing her signature song "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" at either the Hollywood Bowl or the Greek Theater. Her voice is so unique, so heavenly. ...Rowby

Mary Martin sang a parody lyric for the guys as though it was the real thing. She was probably handed the lyric hours before performance.
She made it profound. She was a genius who also was an absolute professional.
    A great Star!

I was at her show in an air plane hanger at Tan Son Nhut in Oct of 1965 sitting WAY back in some bleachers. . If you scan the crowd scenes of this video it seems that it was outdoors so I think that this may have been her show at the Nha Trang Air Base. I lost my photos years later to a mold problem that destroyed most of my VN slides so the photos that I took of the show are gone. It was a great event for us to see.

M/S Martin is wonderful: the finest Nelly, Venus, and one of the finest Dolly's. A warm, gracious , sadly missed person.😢😢❤❤xx

She did the "Hello, Dolly" tour in 1965 -- starting in the US, then Japan, Korea, Viet Nam, and finally London. "I Do! I Do! followed.

I believe this was in 67, after Mary had finished her run in I DO I DO (1966).
    Wonderful to see this!

I keep thinking that, somewhere, there exists a complete video of the Mary Martin performance. What I would give to see Mary and this company doing the show from start to finish. David Merrick was being very careful not to give too much of it away. It was still one of the hottest tickets on Broadway. She is such a triumph in this show.

    9th / 10th October 1965 at Bien Hoa.
President Johnson was in hospital having his gallbladder operated on at this time.

The TRUTH is that HELLO, DOLLY! was first offered to Ethel Merman, then Mary
Martin - and they both turned it down! Merman didn't want to do another potential
long-run show after GYPSY and Martin had the ill-advised (and major flop) JENNIE
on her schedule. Both of these ladies had "first crack" at virtually every show. In
her memoir, Martin readily admits to rejecting -for various reasons - KISS ME KATE,
MY FAIR LADY, MAME and was even present at a meeting for FUNNY GIRL before
it was written. DOLLY offered Carol Channing a major career comeback - and she
grabbed it - AFTER auditioning for director Gower Champion - who, ironically, had
cast her in the show that first got her attention: LEND AN EAR, which led to her
triumph in GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES. In short, one person's "reject" can
turn into another person's gold mine.

Mary Martin was a national treasure (and is still a legend), but boy was she wrong about returning Vietnam vets. They were treated like dirt when they came back.

Dave Glo SHE wasn't wrong. She had nothing but respect for them. She isn't responsible for the many ingrates they confronted. Mary Martin was one of the most gracious and talented performers I ever met. Julie Harris was another.
