  • Background to this game: Just before tip-off, Jerry Stackhouse and Vernon Maxwell decided to open their mouths and trash talk MJ.. Stackhouse bragged that he "held his own" in a few summer league games against Mike, while Maxwell thought the Bulls were getting too much press ("To hell with Michael!", he said).
Downplaying the commentary, MJ simply stated he "didn't wanna make it personal" - well, he did anyway. Mike scored a season-high 48 points, shooting 18-of-28 from the field (15 of those 48 points in the 1st quarter w/ Stackhouse on him) as the Bulls CRUSH the Sixers, 120-83.
*MJ also passes the 23,000pts mark

I still remember how Sportscenter hosts were laughing at Stackhouse over this game for weeks afterwards....

It's simple. Can anyone point out ONE player that has: an NCAA Championship, 2 Olympic Golds, 6 NBA Titles, NBA Rookie of the Year, NBA Defensive Player of the Year, 6-time NBA Finals MVP, 3-time NBA All-Star MVP and Slam Dunk Champion (to name a few)? Not to mention 3rd ALL-TIME in steals 3rd ALL-TIME in points (over 32,000 in only 13 seasons!) 30.0+ ppg for his career at 50% FG. I Rest my case... ABOVE LEGENDARY STATUS without your twitters, and fb and the usual self-promo crap! MJ=BEST EVER!

other users have posted this highlights but it's never old watching it again...thanks!
To say Kobe is a better scorer than MJ, this game is just one of many where MJ scored so effortlessly while Kobe has to take 2 or 3 dribbles, hold the ball for 10 seconds, pump fakes multiple times, spins so much until he circles the globe, etc... 48 points without breaking a sweat

48 points and sits down with 2 minutes left in the 3rd qt...and the rest of the way!!! he could've scored 60+ but he had already made his point and the bulls were up by 20!!! typical MJ statement kind of game!!!!

Blue Skeptic - so true. MJ was the last guy to stat pad like certain stars of today. When MJ returned as an old man at 38-40 years of age to the Wizards, during an interview he said (paraphrased) - "some of my fans are upset I've returned because my stats will be adversely affected. But I don't care about that. I love to play and I still feel I can contribute."
Meanwhile, in the 2016 Finals after game 2, Lebron said about losing the first two games (paraphrased), "well I've averaged a triple double.....". I can't imagine any real competitor ever saying that after getting beat. The stats aren't what's important - winning is and only winning is as far as real competitors are concerned. Why does he do this? Because this late in his career, LBJ understands passing MJ is impossible except perhaps in the stats department although even there, MJ still has better overall metrics - and LBJ is idiotically obsessed with passing MJ which is just pathetic.

Game One of the 1992 Finals Michael scored 35 points in about 13 minutes on the floor....they always say "35 in a half" but in reality he was literally only on the court for about a quarter worth of gametime

MJ on the Interview: "I don't want to make it personal"
MJ's thought in his head: "That's all I need for him to do that, and it became personal with me"
"I was supposed to kill this guy, I'm supposed to dominate this guy and from that point on, I did."

If Jordan never retired he could have broke Kareem's record faster tha anyone in history. But he wasn't about individual accolades.

he made the mistake of running his mouth about MJ, every single guy who did that coaches included Jordan utterly destroyed them.

You can tell Michael Jordan used to watch a lot of Jason Kidd's Dallas Mavericks games back in the day after making that pass, because Jason Kidd used to throw no look passes in the air like that all the time back in the early to mid 90s Mavericks years.
