The Most Inappropriate Interview Questions Asked By Barbara Walters

- Опубликовано: 14 авг 2024
- Barbara Walters is one of the most iconic broadcast journalists of all time. Over the course of her 60 years in the industry, Walters interviewed some of the biggest names in entertainment, politics, and more, and came to be known for her practice of asking people incredibly personal questions.
Of course, sometimes a question can be a little too personal, and Walters certainly crossed that line more than a few times. We’ve dug up the journalist’s most regrettable moments: From uncomfortable questions about sexuality to downplaying abuse, these are the most inappropriate interview questions asked by Barbara Walters.

What did you think about these questions being asked?
I definitely think that these questions crossed a line and are rude
😮😨
I agree Barbra Walters is very aggressive. She’s rude.
@@theresafox2816 yep
There's a fine line between news and none of your business. Barbara crossed that line often.
Dolly Parton responded to all questions gracefully
Don't forget when Corey Feldman talked on the View
Feldman, who has spoken publicly about the abuse he suffered along with fellow ‘80s star Corey Haim, appeared on “The View” in 2013 and did not shy away from speaking out about the powerful person in Hollywood that harmed him. Walters challenged his claim.
Walters questioned Feldman, “Are you saying they are pedophiles and that they are still in this business?” Feldman said “yes” without hesitation.
In 2014, Walters made headlines for defending Woody Allen amid resurfaced molestation allegations.
That's right! And then didn't one of those guys not feldman, but the other one, die sometime after that? I doubt it was suicide. Probably murdered for being so honest.
@ladyrose YES!! Thats what sticks out in my mind. You also forgot to write about how she was appalled that him speaking out my damage the movie industry. So in Barbara Walters world, you protect power brokers in Hollywood, not abused children.
Nobody gets the better of Dolly Parton.
That was an awkward moment when dolly Parton explained that if BW had called her a hillbillies she would probably have kicked her shins in, or something. And Dolly laughed, but Barabara kept prying and didn't even twitch a little smile. Did you see that part of the interview?
What Barbara Walters did to Ricky Martin was cruel and evil. That's when I lost all respect for her. People need to come out when they are ready and comfortable, if they ever choose to do so. She truly violated him by doing what she did. I know she's done other terrible things to other people, but what she did to Ricky was the worst that I remember. I don't think Barbara Walters should ever be listed amongst the ranks of respected journalists; she belongs in the same bin with people like Kitty Kelley and those who write for th Enquirer or Globe. Apparently, Walters is addled with dementia and no longer leaves her apartment and doesn't even remember who she is anymore. Despite the evil things that she did in her career, that's a horror that no one should wish on anyone else. Nobody deserves to have an ending like she is suffering.
I'm gay back then even the gay magazine the advocate would do that.
She is very inappropriate. I don't understand how she worked. I mean, if I was a celebrity, I wouldn't go to her
I agree, I never understood either. It also wasn't that interesting.
Because those years weren't as woke as now! You are comparing different generations!
Neema is right. The baby boomers who this was targeted to are a depraved generation. That is why they thought this was good entertainment
I lost all respect for BW when she took defense for Woody Allen and sexual abuse of his children with Mia Farrow. She displayed a sense of pride towards him as they were personal friends. It was horiffic!
I was so appalled and disgusted when she did that
There is zero evidence that Allen sexually abused anyone.
And with his adopted daughter.
I didn't know she supported this scumbag molester, Hollywood sure does, I would watch her specials sometimes, and squirm in the privacy of my own house, just the looks on these people's faces, (and that's what they are Barbara) makes you feel bad that they have to maintain, while she's getting some sick pleasure, or trying to get a scoop, and now she's sorry plz...
I don’t like BW so much
I think Barbara Walters was wrong to put Lewinsky in an awkward situation asking her questions sometimes certain things need to be kept quiet.
Not only that. Barbara was an older woman, she should have recognized that this young woman needed some protection and care. I never understood how Linda Trip, who was 47 at the time when she befriended Lewinsky, could treat Lewinsky so poorly. Tripp was old enough to be her mother.. I think it sickened most people as well. The republicans used Tripp for the gossip and then it appeared to abandoned her. it was a creepy thing to do. Barbara should have explored the role of Linda Trip in betraying her confidence, and not giving her better advice.
Walters interview with Dolly Parton was disgracefull........full stop.
Oh Ba ba wa wa...that "hillbilly" outclassed her at every turn
The nerve of Barbara asking Monica Lewinsky about her having "self-respect"....what about Bill's....He was the President, married with a child...Even if she was prancing around and flirting with him, it was his place, being much older than her, to have never allowed what happened. Never liked BW.
I agree. At her age then she should have understood that. However, the media enjoyed going after lewinsky, people twenty years her senior were making jokes about her. Jay Leno had a field day joking at her expense. It was creepy.
exactly. both were wrong, however. she knew he was married. but he did have all the power dynamic
Walter’s had an affair with a married man too. It came out. I actually really feel bad for Monica. Yes she made a horrible mistake at early 20s but she shouldn’t have to be punished forever. Bill wasnt!!!
I don't feel sorry for Monica, she's not a victim but Barbara's a hypocrite. Walters slept with married men and could be slut shamed for her actions too. You don't throw rocks when you live in a glass house.
Walters slept with a married senator. What a hippocrite!
Rarely watched Walters. I didn't find her interesting. She is sort of like bad social media before the internet. Couldn't watch her on The View. Her interviews were cruel and aged badly. She realizes now that they would be inappropriate now. Going on about someone's appearance, asking a minor about their sexual beahvior, and being nosey about someone's sexual identidy, all considered foul now. It was hard to watch, who wanted to watch someone being given a hard time? Imagine her speaking to Elizabth Taylor about her appearance? Taylor should have asked Barbara how did she feel being so slacking in beauty and ridiculous as a person, feeding off the very famous.
She was literally the worst. She was always trying to tear people down instead of just ask regular questions.
Agree she was an evil woman. Even looked like a witch or goblin
I don’t understand why people say she was respected and good at her job?! Surely you can be an amazing journalist and not ask inappropriate invasive questions. Especially to teenagers! I think it’s her sweet little voice that enabled her to get away with being so rude and unprofessional to her guests.
They most definitely should've had seperate interviews for robyn and Mike. Especially the way he was looking at her like prey
I agree. I can't imagine how Robin must have felt during that part of the interview.
Yes, Barbara was totally out of line in the case of both Martin and Dolly Parton. When someone says back off on this question then the interviewer should back off and not double down. Walters was wrong, wrong, wrong.
I totally agree Barbara was definitely in the wrong
Being famous means you live in the public eye. The public eventually find the skeleton in the closet.
She just wanted the exclusive, she’s never cared
Elizabeth Taylor could be 400Lbs and still be more beautiful than every woman in the room!!!!
To each there own... Beauty is in the eye of beholder.
Elizabeth was a natural beauty and Walters was jealous. There’s so many reasons Dame Elizabeth Taylor was and still is beloved.
Barbra Walters is an aggressive reporter.
@@theresafox2816 In 2022 she would just be a soclal media influencer.
I know! I remember some really bad jokes made about her on SNL. It wouldn't be considered appropiate now. It wasn't appropriate then, but there was no social media then. All you could do in those days was cringe if you watched it.
Barbara Walters should have lost her job many many years ago. Unbelievable she got by with all of that.
Today she would
social media makes a huge difference.
Did she really ask Barbra Streisand why she hadn't fixed her nose? Things that are broken are fixed and to my knowledge, her nose had never been broken. If she wanted to ask such a crass question, she could have at least asked why she hadn't gotten her nose DONE.
But what do you expect? There was a running joke in the 90s that Walters would do whatever she could to make you cry for her ratings. She just always seemed like a mean girl to me.
Letitia Tsunami Now that Walters has died, the media is going into spin mode, calling her a "legend" and a "first" (because of her gender) in the television news business. Maybe in television that's true (the level she rose to), but she was not the first prominent woman journalist. People like Dorothy Kilgallen, who wrote a popular newspaper column during the 1950s through the mid 1960s, and Helen Thomas, who for many years was part of the White House press corps, were also hard hitting with their questions, but also fair. Walters is responsible for creating The View, which has always consisted of a group of wealthy women sitting together gossiping about the current events happening.
I lost respect for her when I saw how she treated Corey Feldman on THE VIEW.
What about Parton and Martin? Those sucked!
I hadn't seen those interviews until recently. And yes, she was horrid to them as well
@@mikurtis1767 they used to call her ba ba wa wa on snl or mad tv I can't remember which but they were the only ones who called he out on her atrocious questions
The brook sheolds one got me. She was just a child....and Brittany spears wasn't any better
Yeah that one got to me, I knew a lot of the children in Hollywood were being abused, sexual abuse was so common since way back, these mostly men thought they could do anything they wanted even to children, that was insanely sick
Hearing all of this about Barbra Walters. Now that she is "Retired" or "Semi-Retired". They should ask Ms. Walters. What is actually your illness: if you have one? At 92yrs give or take a few years. I didn't know how "inappropriate & cruel" some of those "intimate" questions were/are? It's like: What if the shoe is on the other foot? You know ask her those "Kinda" questions! Has anybody ever interviewed her in depth? Or is she writing an Autobiography. But you know she would not put such "Negative" information about herself!🤔😖
Read Audition, her Bio 2008. Is so good.
@ Alvaro Garcia
Barbara Walters is suffering from dementia.
what good would it do now? She has Dementia i hear and don't even know who she is anymore
She just passed away today.
never liked Barb Walter. She was a mean person that only cared about her career and no one else
Hey Barbs, I have a question for you, are you going to fix that lisp of yours?
People wanna know.
You can feel and hear that Barbara Walters puts all her personal frustration into her questions. She is such an awful person without any respect for other people.
monica was a literal teenager pursued by the fucking president. i will never understand how she was treated worse than him. the power dynamics were not even close to even.
22 years old is not a teenager, i agree she was treated horribly though
She was 24 and chased after him. She was not a teenager. She chased after more than one married man and was experienced. Not even close to being a victim.
She wasn't s teenager. She was 22-23.
Barbara Walters' career has always been a mystery to me: how do you get to be that famous when you're known for asking stupid questions and you have a pronounced speech impediment? The only gig Walters fit into was on The View, where she was finally settled in with other low IQ gossips.
Yep
idk why but people actually love stupid people who say or ask stupid things. look at donald trump
Yes
You clearly know nothing about her career and her hundreds of accomplishments
Lol
I wouldn’t refer to her as “iconic” and all of her questions are meant to bait people into a negative response by asking overly personal questions.
I remember when Gilda on SNL used tear her a new one. LOL, it actually brought up a legitimate point though. I would like to know the story of how Walters managed to get a job in broadcasting.
Dolly is the best
(remembering SNL from the mid 70s, when Gilda Radner would do the Ba Ba Waters skit along with the wig, funny times)
She did verbally violate Ricky Martin. She violated many people. You can be a good interviewer without insulting or hurting people.
Met Brooke Shields she was so sweet
that why we like Barbra walters ..she always think of the most unusual questions to asked... which is so unique and made her the most interesting interviewer as well
It kinda irks me that she wasn't held adequately held accountable for these things and got to retire peacefully with her legacy intact.
Well said
She did nothing wrong. She asked questioned based on what people wanted to know and things people were talking about at the time. She was great!
@@Catg1222 I guess then Ricky Martin, Dolly Parton, and Brooke shields all got what they deserved 😔
@@Justrelaxx101 What? Never said anything like that. Nice try twisting my words. 🤦🏻♀️
@@lostwoods5687 Thousands wanted to know.
These big celebrity “interviews” Barbara, Diane Sawyer, Matt Lauer and the like used to have were always nasty interrogations. They know the masses wanted to see stars humbled and degraded and they obliged. They’re all so gross to rewatch.
What a sad and pathetic behavior. How was she allowed in journalism, despite her inappropriate behavior?
I never understood why she was considered a "respected journalist "....I always found to be very tabloid...interested only in sensationalism and sound bites
Asking provocative questions was her job. And people back then weren’t offended by everything like these days
So Geraldo writes lies about them having an affair, after he physically assaulted Bette Midler...what a piece of work for a human being!
If she hadn’t retired when she did she would have been fired in todays world right away
She was always condescending & arrogant.
This clip doesn't even mention the time Corey Feldman was on The View talking about pedophiles in Hollywood and Walters chided him for speaking out which could ruin the movie industry. HELLO!!! When a guest opens up and talks about abuse suffered as a child, you DON'T side with the movie industry. Maybe try to fake some compassion for the victim, since you didn't have any sincere feelings of sympathy.
She showed her true colors in that moment, side with the her pedo besties, throw the victim under the bus.
Dolly Parton is the one true celebrity I would love to meet
What she said in the interview with feldman was disgusting
No disrespect intended, but only in America can a person with a pronounced and annoying lisp in their voice, be a Broadcast Journalist.
You're kidding, right?
British TV presenter Lucy Worsley has a noticeable lisp. Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who frequented radio during WWII, had a lisp. Actor Sean Connery was famous for his most peculiar lisp-y speech.
Plenty of professional media-figure people elsewhere have lisps. It's not just some American thing.
That said, Barbara was perhaps one of the worst and most ironic cases, for such a hypercritical, judgmental journalist.
@@BrianLockett No Brian, I'm serious. I was a Communication Major, have a good voice, & tried to get into Broadcasting....all to no avail. 'Someone' high-up apparently cut her a HUGE break?! The more I think about it, she was also cocky.
You should have released this today.
Cringe worthy = this woman!
She's awful and creepy
Barbara walters slept her way to where she got in her career. She's always been a horrible interviewer. She has the waa waa speech impediment and she's the typical east coast elitist. I never understood why people would speak to her. If she asked me any of those rude questions I'd tell her interview over. Come back with better less insulting questions and maybe I'll speak to you. I've never thought of her as good journalist!!
Slander
Dolly Parton is too good for the world she was born to. As it turns out, Barbara Walters was more or less the inspiration for Connie Chung.
Walters is relenless with her pitchfork. The She Devil was poking with her pitchfork like her decades old life depended on it.
inappropriate mean spirited person.
BW is a respected journalist but she was never respectful
Why was Barbara Walters revered as a great interviewer?
She was an evil woman
What a horrible woman!!
So sad that reporters have to do this to make a buck.
She was also condecending to Doris Day. Really uncomfortable interview
Barbara Walters is nothing but a Barbie doll for the media
Yes barbra
Barbra walters has always been creepy.
I don’t think anyone can say anything. She was asking what the public wanted to know! Now in hindsight it was wrong, but people like Megan Kelly are still getting in trouble. They are still asking the questions the public want to know!
Why does the public care? I'm part of the public and I don't give a shit. I think it's just sad, bored, lonely people who care. They need to get a life of their own instead of harassing celebrities.
The public doesn't care about the weight gain the weight gain of someone like Elkzabeth Taylor or that politician. And outing an LGBTQ person is dangerous
Megan Kelly does not ask questions like BW did.
the fatphobia in the 90s/00s was no joke. it was brutal
And now it’s thinphobia. Just wish people can be themselves without being pushed one way.
I don’t like her bc she has no respect I like Diana sawyer instead of Barbara Walters bc Diana has more respect and Barbara has not respect at all
i saw on youtube the annoying interview Walters did with Bing Crosby and his choice to remarry a younger woman at the time
and cant figure how this Walters was ever respected as any kind of journalist and not laughed out of the business...
but you gotta remember because of womens lib in the 70s...the media wouldve made Walters
come across as an assertive female icon

It doesn’t excuse the questioning, but at the time, these were not out-of-the-box questions. The threshold for respect and boundaries was totally different in the 70s 80s, and even 90s.
Does she hate women??
Yes!!
Didn't she do awful things to Brittney Spears as well?? I don't really follow BW. I've never liked her. I've always found her to be snobbish and rude.
Bawawawa!
If you were a twee what kind of twee would you be?
I don’t like Walters at all, I specially dislike the interview she made to the great Dolly Parton. Dolly was very clever in her answers, pure country class 💖
She never asked a question that was inappropriate.
Everyone is acting like Barbara and her crew attacked these people. They were promoting their albums/books/shows! They agreed to the interviews and their agents planned them ahead of time. They had discussion outlines that prepared them for the questions Barbara would be asking. Some of them answered very well, some of them answered awkwardly. We can blame the artists themselves or blame their agents for not preparing them. But, Barbara didn't attack or ambush anyone. Everyone involved was scheduled, was up at 4 in the morning for makeup and knew what they were getting into.
By "promoting" you mean exploiting and riding their coat tails for clout 😆
Her most regrettable moments? No. Barbara Walters did not regret anything about her despicable behavior during interviews, because she had ZERO empathy. It disgusts me that she was able to have such a long and prosperous career as an interviewer. She comes off more as prosecutor, putting these celebrities up on a witness stand. She reveled in humiliating people and insulting them. Never liked her. Glad she is gone!
Idgaff, karma reached her and now she has no memories of her long life. Can’t imagine a crueler punishment
😮
Other than Barbara Walter's repeatedly asking if Ricky Martin was gay, and that affecting his career, I don't think she knowingly asked any hurtful questions.
You got to be kidding.
What a joke. Of course she knew. She knew very well how the industry worked and that if she was very cruel to people, it might get her juicy personal details and higher ratings.
@@motiemo you are so right I agree with you completely.👏👏
I think she's the most iconic, because she was the first female newscaster on a national level. You can really see her story in Ron Burgundy.
Barbara Walters had a tin-ear and lacked emotional intelligence. She was a good interviewer but her style was one dimensional and questions lacked empathy even though they were framed as being very empathetic. At times she appeared vile in her behavior with the interviewee. Barbara who was married four times, worked to set herself above those she interviewed as one of sterling character. She doesn’t come close to many of the qualities exhibited by those whom she interviewed..
She asks the tough questions and the questions that everyone wants to know. That’s why she’s so famous.
So being rude is a ticket to fame?
@@deborahminter6231 Not rude, just direct.
@@kimjones246 you don't think asking someone if they think of themself as a joke is rude? Direct is a convenient way of describing harassing someone and asking them irrelevant questions.

She was awful to Maria Callas
She asked hard questions that others wouldn’t ask.
In a tacky, condescending way.
She was amazing. She wasn't perfect. She made mistakes. But when she did she owned up to it.
She hardly ever did
She seems like a horrible person. Her comments to Corey Feldman and questions to Brooke Shields.
She would rather protect pedophile's.
No surprise this awful woman created an awful show “The View”. So disappointing and disgusting.

Goddam you got hit with the ugly stick
It's not her job to body shame people. It's not her job to force LGBTQ people out of the closet on public television. And it's certainly not her job to sleep with a married senator.
Barbara Walters is the best of the best tho.
No
I love Barbara! I don’t see the need to cut down a woman lying in her bed @ 95 with dementia!
Who cares. We all end up old lying in bed with dementia. Just because someone's old does not give them a pass on their horrible life choices. You don't get to suddenly be remembered as an angel just because you're old. That's not how it works.
@@motiemo Yes you do it is called respecting your elders. She was a journalist at a time when the woke mob and social media didn't exist.
