Big Little Lies: The Slap (Season 2 Episode 4 Clip) | HBO
This entire season should be studied in acting classes. Everyone’s at the top of their game and they’re extraordinary.
mrgolightly seriously. This is top level ish
I thought the parts without Zoe or Meryl Streep were a bit thin in plot. But the acting is top notch.
Ren G some critics said the same thing about the plot being a bit thin.... and kind of repetitive but still an outstanding show.
Unbelievably wonderful to have these great actors in this series. And Meryl convincingly showed here that she really deserves a slap. Great, great, great!
i personally liked the 1st season more.
The slap made my mouth drop, but Mary Louise’s response made it drop even more. She straight up mocked the way her dead son would beat her
Catherine Liu Yeah she was referencing how it would almost be a routine of them abusing one another before having sex, hence foreplay.
My jaw dropped like a hot potatoe.
I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING!!!
Catherine Liu That’s what I said lol
@@jeremyhill727 To clarify, I don't think she is straight up mocking the way her dead son would beat her, like your comment said, as if Celeste is the victim and Perry the abuser. She is mocking the way Celeste would slap Perry during foreplay the same way Celeste slaps Mary Louise herself
I wonder if the kids fully realize that they are in the company of brilliant, legendary, iconic actresses... like... wow!
Half fully, the twins' parents showed them Meryl's movies when they found out that she was going to be playing their grandmother.
Streep is the only one that fits that description from this group.
drlee2 Streep is definitely one of them. I’d argue that Kidman, Dern and Witherspoon are brilliant and iconic in their respected ways and are on their way to becoming legendary. Along with Woodley and Kravitz
We’ve never seen this many outstanding actresses in the same tv show before
So just anybody relatively famous is brilliant and iconic?
“What should we call that? Foreplay?”
Such a twisted and mean comment. Perfectly speaks for the apathetic and manipulative part of Mary Louise’s personality.
"that's all... "
Mary Louise: I bet you love to get hit by leather. Where are the belts? Why is no one REEAADDY?
@@da96103 LOL!!!!
love the internet at 2 am.
That was so fucking messed up. I can't believe Celeste didn't slap her again after that. Such an ugly thing to say.
Damn Nicole slapped Meryl all the way to the Emmys!
Countrycowboy08 this comment is EVERYTHING 😂
hahahahaha omg
SCREAMING
I guarantee she meant that when she said she was sorry, she wasn't acting. Lol
I AM LIVING FOR THIS COMMENT 😂💯
You can only slap “THE STREEP” if you yourself have a Oscar as well.
Scott Rogers that’s a good one! 😂😂😂
@caleast ... Ok... Way to take a light hearted joke to a dark and unnecessary place.
@caleast I'm not arguing that... I'm just saying it's an inappropriate time. They were clearly making a light hearted joke.
@caleast are you okay? do u need to see a psychologist?
Damn right!
This is an amazing show. Streep is so creepy as Mary Louise and this is a completely new kind of role for her.
Thought I was the only one creeped out by her. I have a feeling shes the reason her son was the way he was. Cause woah!
she’s never really been in a role as an instigator and such a nasty person but even as a huge Meryl fan, i’m creeped by her too
@@gnarbrapp I think that's a positive thing lol
ruthiehensh
She played evil roles before
@@modarXmodar I know she has but this is a whole different level.
The way she referrers to her son's abusive nature, ".... Foreplay?"
I mean literally, goosebumps.
Mary-Louise 100% had that slap coming but now I’m worried because she’s almost definitely going to use this against Celeste when she tries to get custody of the boys.
That was in the e05 promo.
That's not even a question. The real question is, what ISN'T she going to use against her?
Unless someone saw it or there was video, there’s actually no proof that it happened. There’s no way for Mary Louise to prove that it happened in court. If I were Celeste I’d deny deny deny lol.
No one else was around. Just deny it.
It was brought up...she brought everything that was told to her in confidence to take up for Jane and manipulated it and used it
I can see where Perry gets it.
Yeah, no wonder her son was so fucked up. The rotten apple does not fall far from the rotten tree.
@@Gitsie007 🤣
Yep
Perry was a horrible rapist, abuser. Let's not make that his mom's fault.
@@YTFlove4ever um she clearly is a vindictive person. And personality can be genetic.
Nominations are shaking...
The writings are on the wall, here......
Lol
Mary Louise's scary laughter as she walks away from that slap.🤪 She's been meddling with Nicole's meds!!!!
Oh god
She took that slap like a champ tho, straight gangsta
Best Actress : Kidman
Best Supporting : Streep
Emmy's , Golden Globes , Critics Choice
Isabel Jait after this they’ll release season 3 as a feature length film, then win all the Oscars. Then season 4 will be a broadway show, sweeping all the Tonies.
MTV awards: Best Slap: Kidman and Streep
don't forget SAG
Laura Dern tho, she will have Meryl or Nicole run for their money (depends on which category the producers will submit her name as)
What about Villanelle from killing Eve? :D
For me it's the 'no no no no' when Celeste tried to apologise. The level of calm and pure collectiveness at how deeply she is affecting everyone's mentality is phenomenally disturbing.
Her caracter gave me impressions that she doesn't feel the physical pain , as how she is so I'll mentally.
My mother. Had to be away from her for years to process this
Watching Streep and Kidman go head to head with each other, has been some of the best tv I've ever watched.
Shivani “or perhaps... seeking refuge from...”. Damn.
Meryl Streep going toe to toe with Al Pacino, Angels in America as well
@@amythomasson4054 Yeah that little pauses made it appear very real. Cudos to the actress.
Is it just me that felt so damn happy Celeste had the guts to do that?
I sipped on my coffee when that scene happened but i heard the slap , when i looked up again at the TV, i saw how Mary Louise seemed to be happy in a sadistic way. As if to prove something and i hated her that very moment
@@charmedprince I know what an evil woman. I hate her even more episode after episode😂
I was so happy! I was like, "don't you apologize for that." but of course she did. lol
I'm glad that Celeste did that, but I'm also very worried. Sure Mary Louise deserved that slap, but she's definitely gonna use her action while in court to get Max and Josh's custody
@@charmedprince Then her job to play such a character is 100% accomplished. Cudos to Meryl.
Dang streep and kidman are so good
This scene made me howl with laughter! F*$k !!!
I have watched this scene multiple times and the issue is I CAN'T FIND A SINGLE FLAW in their acting. It's so seamless even on the 10th watch. Damn, these are some brilliant actresses!
You didn't notice Kidman's Australian accent seeping in?
Mukund Mahajan ive noticed it seeping in here & there throughout the whole series. The acting is still top notch tho.
@@mukundmahajan425 It's more pronounced when she says "It's not right!"
Mukund Mahajan She’s never really nailed the US accent...still love her though
@@mukundmahajan425 They should just have her character be Australian born, who moved to the states when she was 10/11. problem solved.
I wasn't expecting the comeback. Jesus, Mary Louis is a savage
Can't wait to see her get pushed down a flight of stairs
you defending mary louise?
@@JamesCarter1998 SAVAGE 😂😂😂😂😂
Poor Celeste. She escaped an abuser just to have another one follow. Omg Meryl and Nicole are amazing.
An abuser 9 out of ten is a product of their upbringing, family member or members abusive i.e., verbally, physically, sexually, emotionally... unfortunately, most victims r in total fear to seek help. Vicious circle & toxic energy affects everyone, friends, coworkers, etc.
When Celeste slapped Mary Louise, the glasses flew straight to the Emmys.
da96103 LOL
LMAO
this is perfect LOL
these are some of the most famous women in the world, yet they're such incredible actors that you don't see their celebrity on screen, you see their characters. JUST INCREDIBLE!!!!
Each and every time Mary Louise's puckered face appears on screen, I want to slap her too. What an infuriating character!! Streep is playing the role very well...
She's so frustrating plss
I kinda laughed really hard at that slap her glasses flew away.. 😂😂Celeste really snapped..
Ravendra Kewlani me too! Celeste probably seen mother like son! 😊
Fellow nominees in Supporting Actress, just stay at home, don't even bother trying the cerulean military jackets from Yves St Laurent.
Underrated comment!
This comment is GROUNDBREAKING
...just wear your lumpy blue sweater where you no doubt fished it out from some clearance bin in some tragic casual corner.
@@ruzzelladrian907 *whispers* "That's all...."
Thank god someone is coming to work
Her grip on her reactions, not even being furious at that slap and composing herself so quickly, the way she sinisterly mocks Celeste by saying "foreplay", the way she completely changes face and attitude when returning back to the kids without a second thought; what a character Mary Louise was! And of course that kind of a character had to be played by the best of the best. I loved this series.
There's rumors of a third season being developed! It almost seems too good to be true...
Just when I was wondering if the SLAP in the title was metaphoric..jaw dropping..jaw breaking..parallel universe..
that small giggle in the end at @2:40 .
OMG, I did not expect that. I thought Clarissa would slapped Virginia Woolf, but....
Now all we need is Laura Brown to come in and hit somebody with her car!
@@austincc1782 I would LOVE to see that! hahahahaha
that wahat ii was thinking
Hahahajajaja i got that reference.... 🤣🤣🤣
God bless you ! I totally overlooked that they were In the Hours . Sad on my part because I loves the film and book
Celeste is too kind.
She didn't need to apologize for that brilliant, well-deserved slap.
OMG her little giggle when she walks out of shot. This woman is scary.
omg Meryl's REACTION wow.... sometimes i feel like ppl really make her into this superhuman idolization of an actress but really that was so good. the subtleties in her face are so good
Meryl's chuckle at the end adds so much nuance to this scene
Mary Louise might really be top 5 TV villains of all time
Seriously! Its been awhile since I despised a character- I had to remind myself its Meryl Streep and she's just doing her job lol
Loved the soap operaish slap. His mom is just as sick as he was.
Soap opera is so far below this level of acting. It's insulting to even mention it tbh
@@bA-yd9vj yeah soap opera is very melodramatic and everything is super exaggerated. The characters talk to themselves, stare off into the distance, repeat the same dialogue over and over and the storylines are always ridiculously unrealistic.
This series is the polar opposite of that in practically every way and the actors are all doing an amazing job and I'm sure they'll get award nominations for it. Calling it a soap opera is an insult when it's so far above that lol
@@FieryFlamingFajitas soap operas have had their share of good actors.
@@FieryFlamingFajitas Meryl Streep’s sister in law Maeve Kinkead played Vanessa Chamberlain on Guiding Light for 30 years so when you are trashing soap actors I know Meryl would ev disgusted by you.
Nicole Kidman getting paid to slap Meryl Streep, both legends
When virginia slapped her mrs. dalloway! Epic!
Mrs Dalloway ain't buying those flowers herself on that day.
Hahaha. Love you all The Hours gang
@Digby Dooright
Loving you guys! Lol
Haha I so love The Hours connection in the comments
@@swarmsea This thread 💕💕
Mary Louis is so insidious. I think the reason why she gives us all goosebumps is because of how real she is. We can imagine there is a woman somewhere out there like this and I don't think any of us knows how we'd deal with someone like that. Meryl is a master.
She reminds me of my mom.
My Mother was Mary Louise in real life & yes, they do exist. Unfortunately, children will cover for them, including manslaughter FACTS.
Took me 55 years to finally cut her off completely per therapy, faith & health issues. This series is addressing, one of the most hidden secrets of many dysfunctional families all across the world... horrific abuse passed down thru generations. The one son is already abusive...not even double digit age Say no more
The way Mary Louise glared at Bonnie scratching her head as she walked away. Jesus such amazing acting
Mary Louise reminds me so much of my own mother in law, so when she got slapped... man... that was lit.
Two of my favorite actresses.... In this marvelous scene.
I mean Kidman slapping Streep... OHHHHH MY GOOOOOOOD
That was other level!!!
That was brilliant
Both actresses deserve EMMYs for that slap-performance! Both the giver and the recipient, WOW!
That would be epic and I will get chills like I did during this scene. Best scene in both seasons!
I literally howled when nicole slapped her. omg !! Did not see that coming ?
That slap was just as satisfying every time Joffrey Baratheon from GoT got slapped.
Did you also bump your homies as you do that howl?
I screamed !!
I was in shock when she said “what do we call that fore play”
I find two things fascinating about this scene.
#1: At the beginning when she's at the door and wants to enter and says: "...I can be gone in a flash if its an imposition..." - look at her eyes and mouth as she says it. Evil AF. Her lips looked curled and ready to bite! And she STILL got in.
#2: If you slow the video down when Celeste and Mary Louise begin to argue up to after the fight...its amazingly deeper and you see every nuance with the eyes, facial expressions, etc.
Well done...
Just realized Meryl is using her real name in the show
Adaia White Lian Moriarty, the writer of the novel, she had Meryl in mind to play Perry’s mother. So as a subtle nod, she named it Mary Louise since she loves Meryl and wanted her to be in the show.
I think I was wanting that to happen but I'm still shocked! that Mary Louise is a piece of work. Maybe that's where her son got it. Can't wait to watch tonight!
Epic scene with the QUEEN and KIDMAN. I am sure Meryl asked her to salp her hard enough to make It more real! Haha
Omg, I could also imagined meryl telling Nicole to SLAP THE HELL OUTTA HER
Have not finished the clip but this is the most uncomfortable situation for us to kibitz.
I'm wondering if Mary Louise is going to "fall" down some stairs too....
Anyone else notice that when Kidman slapped Streep you can hear her glasses hit the floor and then they end up back in her hand in the flash of an eye...? Mistake? Maybe she was just really quick at picking them up? Terrific acting!
Mary Louise watch your back. They already killed off the evil husband ☠️☠️
I had no idea Meryl and Nicole worked together before The Prom on the Netflix!! They're both so superb!
Ugh as someone who also has a monster-in-law, Meryl’s faces are all too real. The emotionless look towards you and then the reaction like you are totally crazy for being rightfully upset at their narcissistic and wrong behavior...oh my! 🙈🙉🙊
Jessica Moore some of us have actual mothers like that as well as (ex) mothers-in-law (resulting in a sociopath of a son), so we get reamed from both sides. It’s a lot to overcome
“What should we call that? Foreplay?” LMAOO Mary-Louise got her with that one 😭😭
No wonder Streep is legendary!
the foreplay comment shocked me mora than the slap, like daaaamnnn literally it was gold!
i just KNEW Meryl was finna rock that face right back!! 😩
You really have to step back and appreciate the depth of Meryl Streep's ability to act with such passive-aggressive viciousness.
Why do I feel that Mary Louise was more worried about her glasses falling when Celeste slapped her? I mean she just went oop HAHAHAHA
That slap made me skip a heartbeat. Shocked. Suddenly feeling afraid. Everything will unravel now...
That foreplay comment though. Wowser! Meryl is such a fantastic actress.
When I first knew that Meryl Streep was going to be part of the cast, I thought her character would be a little more likeable. Jesus fucking Christ! I hate this woman and how passive-aggressive she is. She even managed to intimidate Renata! She definitely is a hell of an actress.
WOW!!! Even I felt that.
I dunno which is worst: THAT SLAP vs THANOS' SNAP!
That little laugh at the end. Nicole Kidman is good but Meryl Streep is giving a master class.
2:23 She smacks her in the face before realizing that it was on accident due to the glasses.
Corey is so suspicious!! I have a bad feeling about him.
Mary Louise is the perfect example of a JustNOGrandmother (IYKYK)...Moving into the same building...The audacity 🤣🤣
That slap was sooo Satisfying 😂
Masterclass in writing and acting. This is what a true drama is!!!
I want so badly for Celeste to represent herself in court against Mary Louise. It would be her chance to reclaim her career, her children, and her dignity. It would be a great way for her to tell her full story, show her character’s strength, and to begin truly moving beyond Perry.
That would be a beautiful thing to see, but I don't think she has the strength to do it
@@augustokist4207 I think she will get her shit together for the sake of her kids
Meryl Streep is my top three of the greatest actresses of all time, she is so IN IT, you always feel like she IS her character
this scene made me jump like i got slapped 💀😂
Meryl streep.. casually reminding us.. that her acting will always be supreme
The slap was savage the response to the slap was even more savage.
The little detail with it saying “beware” on the door, love it.
That little giggle at the end! Wicked!
"I can be gone in a flash if it's an..imposition."
"Ahhh I see two handsome grandsons. Somehow I thought for sure there'd be three. Where'd I get that idea?"
These lines, I swear. And Meryl carries them so effortlessly. Such a legend.
Very well written show with superb acting. Meryl Streep's character is the meaning of vile.
Oh my god.
Not a single actresses in this show can't act.
EVERYONE BECAME THEIR CHARACTER.
I love how I can see “beware” as she closes the door.
At 0:14 you can see in her face the disgust and repulsion she feels for Maddie. That's real acting.
i know that all the actresses in this show are beautiful and zoe is breathtaking but there is just something very special about shailene. maybe because shes got balls. like that thing at the white house or the frakking out west. plus i love her freckles.
I chocked when Mary lousie said that loooool savage
Damn...you just don't see Meryl Streep play evil characters. I mean she was in Death Becomes Her but that's a dark comedy. She is wicked here. Oh..and brilliant at it. That passive way she manipulates.
It is interesting how she looked in that film compared to this show.
This and the scream landed her that Emmy nomination. PERIODT. And she shall win.
Subtle foreshadowing at 0:20--the door says 'Beware' I also notice that Ziggy doesn't seem to like her very much. Smart kid.
Meryl Streep is the most legendary living actress.
Nicole Kidman slapping Meryl Streep is officially one of the most iconic moments from acting history
meryl streep's character is killing it!
Ok im one of those little shits who watch a million award shows but only a dozen movies every year so i didnt at all get the hype about meryl's acting but after watching her play mary louise i finally get why she gets so many nominations and awards. Fucking brilliant actress.
I've been waiting for a scene where ALL of the women are together. Absolutely brilliant. Everyone stepped up their game this season.
whose ideas is it to keep pairing Nicole and Meryl together. Give that man or women a trophy.
Mary Louise is the perfect antagonist, and she had it comin'. Meryl Streep is indeed an amazing acting chameleon.
Oh, Mary Louise. Meryl killed in that role, making me at once sympathetic and revolted by her character. On the one hand she is this poor old fragile, grieving mother who now lost the last of her sons and is desperately clinging on to her idea and memories of him being a good person. On the other, she created the man he was and is now inflicting and propagating further damage on the women he tormented.
Woah!!! Oh my god I thought the slap would be the other way around Jesus that took me by surprise!
Mary Louise is the villain you see coming and yet don't see coming.
I never considered watching this series. I don't even have HBO. But I might find a way to watch Big Little Lies after seeing this clip!
Oh, its on Vudu
Random fact: I have the exact same cake caddy Mary Louise is holding 😂
Mary Fisher just getting back that slap she gave Nicolette years ago!😂😂😂 I love Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman for this scene.
