  • How do you breathe? It might not be something you’ve ever given much thought to, but my guest on this week’s episode is convinced you should. Patrick McKeown believes breathing correctly - that is, through your nose, lightly, and slowly - is the secret to better health, fitness and overall wellbeing. Yet many of us are breathing through our mouths, breathing fast and shallow, and our health is suffering as a result.
    Patrick’s talks me through the science of exactly why it is that nasal breathing is so fundamental to health and he shares how learning it himself transformed his sleep, his anxiety levels and drastically reduced his need for asthma medication.
    We talk about how our emotions, sleep and breathing are all interlinked. Patrick also shares some incredible insights on the connection between breast-feeding and diet, mouth breathing as a child, jaw development and malocclusion (crooked teeth).

    As you said, "It's never too late to correct." I'm 70, and for a week, with your help, through Wim Hof, I've been breathing slowly and through my nose. The result: the nasal pathways have become decongested, the hands are no longer cold and numbed, I sleep better and I have more energy and disposition. Good work!

    I have been 100% nose breathing for 5 months, and I am amazed how my quality of life has improved. It was difficult at first, but I stuck with it. I mouth tape at night and have added silicone nose openers. I am very calm all through the day. I exercise 3x a week and I'm not tired after an hour of cardio. I haven't needed any hay fever meds, we'll see after a few more months. I have more clarity of thought and energy.

    At 74 years old I first heard that I was a mouth breather by my dentist last Friday. I have been looking into this all weekend and yes, I do have nasal congestion, terrible insomnia and a host of other age related issues. I have stopped walking for health because I breathe so heavily folks think there is something seriously wrong with me....shallow, rapid breathing and always short of breath. I followed Patrick's nasal passage clearing yesterday and tried to remind myself to nose breathe. I got even braver and put a small piece of tape loosely right over the center of my lips last night!!! I am soooooo thrilled to tell you that I not only slept 9 hours, but I was relaxed and comfortable. I did wake once during that time and found my right nasal passage was blocked, so I unplugged it and replaced the 1" piece of tape across my lips. Fell back to sleep for another several hours...Woke up rested and not in a race to get something to drink because of dry mouth. Thank you, thank you, thank you....I realize this will require a lot of work to switch the way I breathe, but I am convinced that this will make a world of difference in my life!!!!!

      @@Joy-ky7vk I really worked at it for a month or so. I used the nose clip for sleeping, and working on proper breathing while trying to do some walking.....then when somewhat better I forgot all about it. The biggest change to my breathing seems to be physical therapy for a long term, severe back issue. As I began exercising I was amazed in the first session when my chest opened up thru exercise I had immediate better breathing....no more wheezing when I first get up out of bed. Very exciting development.

    Went for a 21 mile bike ride today breathing only through my nose, occasionally breathing out of my mouth when things got tricky. Felt amazing on the bike and feel great afterwards. Only wish I knew this 10 years earlier!

      You should breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, and when exercising nose breathing only is not enough, then you need to breathe in and out through your nose and mouth

    I taped my mouth last night and slept with my mouth closed. Oh my goodness! What a difference this morning. I'm alert, pulse is slower and feel very calm. Will continue to breathe through my nose. Thank you so much for your research and passion about this truth. God bless!

    I’m am asthmatic for over 48 years.... I now use Mckeown’s technique & my quality of life is much better... I am much healthier now & my asthma is very well under control !

    This is a blessing that I came across...I was worried about my breathing. I was breathing thru my mouth and was feeling like I have shortness of breath. I closed my mouth and breathe and it felt better. Wow !🙏

      I haven’t been able to breathe through the left side of my nose for years. I started trying this breath holding exercise and nose breathing last night and I can breathe almost clearly!

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Patrick. This is a life changing information. I have started taping my mouth for the last two days. I have been a mouth breather for years and have dry mouth until three days ago. My dentist never told me why I had dry mouth and dental issues despite I have a very healthy diet and I don't drink consume sugar or soda. I was diagnosed chronic fatigue. Things finally click.

    Yes, the doctors do want us to be sick. I was a paramedc for 8 years & observed how much difficulty people have when they are short of air. I thought what a horrible experience! When I later became a nurse I could not believe that I needed to teach my patients how to breathe.You are so smart & so right on. I agree with your theories & research, good job!!

      Doctors don't want people to be sick, they just have such high focus on diagnostic, trauma and medication management. They lose track of how something as powerful as nasal diaphragmatic breathing can have an impact on peoples lives from pain, respiratory conditions to stress reduction and sleep quality among many other benefits to peoples health.

      That's the same as saying doctors don't want their job as doctors, because if there were no sick people there would be no _need_ for doctors. Doctors need sick people in order to be doctors, i.e. you really can't practice medicine if there are no sick people to treat.

      Somehow I always thought you breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. I changed it now. But doctors really don't know how to change their approach to issues. They only look at the symptoms, but people just need advise about how it come. What is the cause. I learned and I know try to help myself and others.

    I’m not sure where to begin. Starting with James Nestor I happened upon Patrick. I am a yoga teacher and practitioner for the past 30 years. I have been a nose breather (I believe) for most of my life and have taught my students the importance (thinking it was basically air filtration and the ability to slow the breath down) of nose breathing. I used to be a runner and cyclist as well and for those activities I ALWAYS exhaled out the mouth. Thank you, Patrick for compiling the research so that I can explain with confidence the scientific evidence. My sister recently developed high blood pressure and while she awaits her doctor appointment, I suggested for her to focus on nose breathing. (She, too has asthma and always was a mouth breather). I am excited to dive deeper to integrate this breathing with my clients.

    Just found this channel. Took me 3 days to finish listening to the podcast it's long but worth every minute.
    I just now realised I breathe through my mouth and take short shallow breaths. I've started practicing nasal breathing, for now it's a deliberate effort.

    So great on so many levels. I’m 85 and I’ve been doing many of these things by accident for the last 30 years. I am the best 85 I could be, the best 85-year-old I know I’m looking forward to another 20 or 30 years. Also when making a point during the conversation if you would look into the camera directly I think it would be so much more effective and persuasive. Keep on keeping on😎

    My son has always been a mouth breather, has had cavities since he was 18 months old, I made the connection but had no idea what could be done about it. He recently started complaining about his nose always feeling blocked and then I was concerned. I thought of seeing a ENT specialist but knew the solution would likely be surgery. By some miracle of youtube algorithms a video about mouth taping came up and we tried it that night, it's only been 2 nights but it all makes sense that his mouth breathing is the cause of his chronic congestion. So grateful for people sharing this information and saving us from unnecessary medical interventions.

    Stunning. I remember my mum telling me to stop breathing with my mouth, I looked gormless. I was about 4 or 5. Apparently born with bronchitis. No treatment. Discovered I had 'asthma in my 30s. Only since starting recent singing lessons did I realise I was breathing incorrectly.

    Really excellent discussion. I absolutely agree with slow and deep breathing helps to improve health. Retention of breath ( kumbhak) stimulate autonomic nervous system. In tern you become more smart in awareness. Regular pranayama will not only keep you healthy but increase your longevity.

    I found out I had trouble breastfeeding; later very crowded teeth, so much so got some removed when 12, have suffered from depression all my life, wake up with a dry mouth, I’ve made jokes that my mouth is always open in photos. Listening to this I was shocked to realize I was unconsciously choosing to breath through my mouth. Recently I had such shortness of breath, I got a Covid test (negative). I thought maybe I was having anxiety. Wow...all new info to me.

    I had a deviated septum, I believe from birth, so this caused me to be a mouth breather. I got surgery to fix my nose. It worked and I finally breathed air through my nose in full. It was amazing. But I was still a habitual mouth breather. I’m just starting very conscious nasal breathing.

    Right on Patrick! Keep up your passion. Sometimes, you have to keep talking and repeating yourself to educate the lukewarm, doubting Thomas’’, so to speak. Sometimes the answer to our ailments are more simple and the struggle is to inform those that look for complicated, difficult ones.

    I've been able to conduct 'lucid-breathing', so to speak. Being aware of breathing through the nose while I sleep. I now awaken earlier and much more rested. I believe this is my solution to better quality of sleep.

    I read Dr. Buteyko's breathing technique book twenty years ago, when on life-long heavy doses of asthma medication. My steroid intake halved within days and I was totally off meds within months. Life changing.

    I’m 24 years old and only just getting a hold of it. As he said, people with depression or anxiety have it harder with breathing. I was one of those people, happily living and over my depression (took 5-6 years of therapy). Now I’m breathing far better and using my nose as much as I can. It’s on and off with sleep but I’m getting there💪🏻

      I am late to the party. Have you tried any herbs or homeopathy? My life has been changed by this breathing and remedies. I use a combination of herbs and homeopathy. I am completely drug free and breathing better than I ever have. I had my gf try my remedies and she has been off her inhaler for almost 5 months now. She is learning the breathing. She said the changes have been incredible and she said the remedies work better than her inhaler ever did. Maybe look into it. Good luck!

    I heard yesterday somewhere about nose breathing. Breathing through the mouth gives stress to the heart. Since then I am looking that I only breath through my nose. I always have learned to breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. The mouth is for eating and drinking and not for breathing. I love to hear more about it, so I am going to listen.     The NHS in the UK explained on their website to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. This is not right and should be changed.

      LoL! How will they get funding to write more crap if they don't give you crappy advice so you can buy big pharma medicine for respiratory issues?
      Imagine 70y old in the comment section who only just realized they should be breathing through their nose ... Imagine how much pharma has made from them over 7 decades and if one could capture the pain and misery, it'd probably be miles long.

      Have you thought that perhaps it was put there deliberately to throw doctors off, thereby making them think it's normal so they can look to medicine as solution instead of asking you to shut up, literally, and breathe?
      I mean, if Dr. Rangan himself is as mystified as you are about nose breathing, imagine the shit load of skewed research that bring false evidence that generate money for big pharma while keeping people miserable for decades.

    I just find about the nasal breathing only few hours ago. I did the beathing exersize on another video and through those few hours I am breathing through the nose only. My infacted sinuse is more open now and feels almost normal. my MD highly recommend a surgery, it going on for over a year. Thank you!!!! Will continue the practice.

    Nasal breathing (nostril breathing) has been used in Yoga for all time.

    I've been telling somebody with sleep apnea about nasal unblocked and taping mouth. They just laugh at me and still complain about their CPAP machine. I just shrug and say have a nice day.

      The same thing happened to me when I told a friend about taping. I'm always surprised when people would rather rely upon a system that treats symptoms instead of researching the cause.

      Its crazy how many people refuse to look past how it may sound a little silly at first to use some of the strategies that this guy recommends. Family and friends would laugh at me when they see me taping my mouth at night or walking around the living room holding my nose and trying to slow my breathing rate but this stuff has helped me more than anything else would have.

    Hi Dr Rangan, you are a fantastic interviewer. Having first seen your TV series Doctor in the House, I was delighted when I found out you had a podcast.
    I'm also a big proponent of Patrick McKeown's work and Buteyko Breathing. His work has had a tremendous impact on my fitness and more importantly my general well-being, and I'm sure I will experience further improvement as I continue to practice. His book Anxiety Free is also terrific and highly recommended for those who dwell too much in the past and/or future as opposed to being in the here and now.
    Apart from praise, the reason I wanted to comment was to make you aware of something which maybe you hadn't realized. While speaking, did you notice that you seem to inhale a lot with your mouth? It's such a habit for many of us, that we do it without thought. I noticed the same thing with myself. One day, when watching a video I had recorded which, ironically talked about the benefits of nasal breathing, I realized, hey, I often inhale with my mouth. During exercise and while at rest including sleep, nasal breathing was fine, but unbeknownst to me til that moment, I was inhaling with my mouth while speaking. It was a real light bulb moment.

    I am so happy to have found this. I never got to breastfeed as a baby because my mother got a breast infectionand that resulted in me sucking blood rather than milk. I was switched to bottle feeding after that.
    I nearly died from asthma as a toddler. I could not breathe through one nostril, and as a result I slept with my mouth open. I developed sleep apnea. I had to sleep apart from my husband, which was upsetting to me. I am always tired. I find I feel foggy in my brain and feel as though I could fall asleep at any time of the day. I am making myself breathe through my nose, and I am practicing Wim Hof method. If this helps me, it will be like a miracle for which I will be eternally grateful!

    what raised the Drs awareness to Nasal Breathing in the past few years..... good talk for many. The mouth stays moist when on the right foods and a good breathing ... People pull out the hairs from there nose How does that effect breathing through the nose.... very insightful!

    I have been breathing through my nose for the last three days since watching one of your video’s. I have realised that whenever I consciously think about my breathing, I am actually breathing through my nose automatically without trying. Amazing as I have spent decades as a mouth breather. HOWEVER, when I lie in bed I find my nose is stuffy and I slip into mouth breathing again.

      I just listened to an interview with James Nestor about this. He commented that for millions of Americans their problems are related to poor sleep directly but the fact that they can't breath then trying to get to sleep and the experience of it is very poor. I have a very dry nose and am frequently stuffed up at bed. I notice a pretty big difference in restfulness if I have been able to breath well.
