That ending with Jean Grey saying good to her doppelganger reminded me little bit of The Sixth Day with Arnold Schwarzenegger's character saying good his doppelganger self.

One thing you guys got wrong. Cable has to use most of his mutant powers to stop the virus from taking him over. Also I do not like how the are turning whole storylines into 3 episodes.
Same. It shows Magneto really does care and not just a facade. I wasn't sure about Magneto and thought there was an ulterior motive to him becoming leader of the X-Men but this episode made me view him differently.

Animation and live action are 2 different mediums
The X-Men 97 showrunner was already fired. He finished work on season 2, but season 3 might end up terrible.. So i wouldn't hold out hope this sets a new bar for X-Men in live action tbh :(

In the original series, Morph was thought to have died a couple episodes in. It was revealed MANY episodes later that he was captured and experimented on by Mister Sinister. The X-MEN were able to find him and free him, but it took a long time for him to deal with the PTSD. I would imagine Morph would still be absolutely terrified of him after all that.
Yeah, Morph came back for a single episode thinking he was ready, and luck of all lucks their next mission just happens to be Sentinels. Afterwards, Morph admitting he's very much not ready yet and took a bit more time to heal. So glad they got him back now.
Wolverine didn't free him, Charles did by telepathically reminding that no matter what Sinister had made him into that he still is one of the X-Men. Then he turned his gun away from Scott and helped him blast Sinister into pieces in the second season finale.

Mr. Sinister is such a fantastic villain and I love his design. Christopher Britton absolutely nails the voice. These episodes are so good so far.

Hopefully the MCU will give us a great adaptation of the character. He’s the only big x-men villain that we haven’t seen in live action

This episode was fantastic! This is exactly want I wanted and so much more! Give me more of this amazing batshit insanity! These are the trippy as hell X-Men stories I've waited so long for! I'm so happy to have these X-Men back as a family because this is what I missed the most! The chaotic energy from the X-Men as they go through hell trying to figure out what the heck is going on. This is exactly what's going to get me tuning in every week for this incredible show! 🌟✨️🎆 10/10 episode!!!

100% agreed. I grew up in the 90's watching this show and reading the comics obsessively. X-Men has always been a massive part of my life.
I'm glad we got this, but I do hope this means someday we'll see a Marvel-made live action X-Men movie. I'm so, so tired of the moody, useless Fox brand of X-Men. Here's so hoping we see a real revival and this is just the beginning of something bigger.

I really like the horror vibes we got in this episode. The colors really stand out and I like that we saw some blood.
That really caught me off guard. Its got this H.P. Lovecraft/David Cronenberg kind of thing going on. Was also nice seeing Mr. Sinister again too.
Hell, even the music was creepy. Those choirs really surprised me!

I`m glad they addressed Morph`s trauma with Sinister in this episode.
Its like with this show they finally understood why anime had such a cultural impact. Mature themes done tastefully, we got the fan service for both the guys and girls, The dialogue is well written, the animation is beatiful. Damn they really cooked.
Also that line about the "Avengers being a team and the X-Men being a family" is so good!
Cable does know Scott & Jean in the episodes Time Fugitives. When his computer is telling him about the X-Men he says he already knows all about Scott Summers & Jean Grey. That is also the episode where Jean touches his mind and sees that he's their kid.
Only Jean is not Cable's mother. Madelyne is his birth mother. Jean is more or less his identical step-mother.

I just watched it right now and hot damn "Dante's Inferno" happening with dark version of modern Shakespeare storyline playing out so beautifully. The techno Organic virus that was originally introduced in the animated series with Wolverine's healing factor resisting with his healing factor taking effect as Cable witnesses it just awesome. Talk about body horror vibes with that whole inception style animation. I loved how Madelyne Pryor's whole warping reality and seeing her turn morph to Magik, Colossus's sister was great. Also the first introduction to Ross Marquand as the voice of Charles Xavier.
Ya know. I as well as a lot of people say how dc beats marvel in animation. However, if marvel can do this with their other characters, theyll catch up to dc real quick.

Ironically, in the comics, Forge invented the weapon that depowered Storm.....
After Storm got shot, I wondered if they were going to have Forge revealed as the weapon's designer or take that out of the storyline

Wow X-men ‘97 is accelerating its way through some classic storylines! It’s almost making my head spin! But I’m loving the quality of the storytelling and that they’ve gone back and continue to go back to the source material-particularly the Chris Claremont material where he was contributing so much to the characterization of all the members of the X-Men.
And I appreciated that in just one or two lines they reveal that Scott’s father abandoned his family and how much that impacted him. And the psychological fears and horror as the Giblin Queen flexes get dark powers, and the trippy metaphysical battle between Jean and Madelyn.
The Storytelling is lean, efficient, and covers so much ground, but they still find a way to make it meaningful and take a scene and give it heart. X-Men 97 is everything I wanted it to be but didn’t dare to hope for. What a ride! Marvel has hit their mark with the series.

What amazes me is they took the story line from the comics that has had me disliking Cyclops since I was a teen, and now I am enjoying his character as an adult. He went from a character that abandoned his wife and child in the comics, to a father struggling to do what is best for his child to survive while not wishing to leave him fatherless in the tv series. And Maddie having her own redemption arc within the same episode...this show is everything I wanted and more.
It’s actually nuts just how good this is.
This is the best content marvel had put out since Endgame. If they can implement this in the MCU going forward Kang Dynasty, Secret Wars and intro of the X-men in the mcu will be historic
This adaptation of the Madeline Pryor/Goblin Queen story arc is honestly FAR better than in the comics. Originally Madeline broke bad not because of Sinister’s influence, but from Scott abandoning her for the real Jean. Which made Scott look horrible because while Madeline is a clone she’s still the mother of his child and their feelings for each other were in fact real. And I loved that in the end Madeline was freed of Sinister’s control and will now live her own life free to do what she wants. It was also a great idea to have their memories merge so that no one knows who was who during when.
Also I loved her costume redesign. Instead of looking like it was designed by a horny teenage boy she looks like an actual witch. And I’m still surprised that the animators made the nightmare scenes look like if Guillermo Del Toro did a remake of The Thing.
Agreed. However, I like that Scott acts a bit immature also here when he says "I wont deal with it" and he leaves the room, I think it is a node to the comics, and a good way to keep that element to his character.
I feel for Madlyn. Evil mind control, finding out you're a clone... post-partum... that's a LOT

Talk about Jennifer Hale vs. Jennifer Hale in this episode. The Darkness vs. The Light and Jean Grey is pulling her doppelganger self to the light. Also Forge coming in the end of the episode to help Storm/Ororo Munroe help regain her powers is another setup to her comic storyline "Lifedeath".
You can hear a bit of Cable's theme song slightly playing when he is given to Bishop. So well done.

We should’ve known that was OUR Jean Grey when she fainted ….
I LOVE how this episode show's Jean's empathy. To give honor to those moments for Madelyne and understand that she too is a victim of Mr. Sinister and deserves her own healing and space says so much about her character. I love Jean and what this aspect of her serves to communicate to us viewers. Fantastic characterization. I do think this season should be 12-13 episodes like many cartoons. It would have given a bit more time to breathe. I also think this episode should have been a two-parter. I am biased though because Jean is my favorite!
I loved the 90’s series but I always felt like it was a cartoon. So I wasn’t super pumped about X-men 97 and this has 100000% exceeded expectations. I’m obsessed and extremely impressed. I want more of this now. This feels more like Marvel’s anime and I’m all for it
Wow Coi really took me back because i remember back in the day there was that whole "whoo is the 3rd Summers brother?" and EVERYONE thought it was Gambit. I even remember that 2 page comic book panel of Mr. Sinister talking to Scott and slipping up and saying 'brothers' to hom and Scott being like "what you mean brothers plural?"
I think Apocalypse will be back
Not sure about this season, but maybe a teaser into next season kind of like how Sinister is teased at the very end of Season 1 finale in the OG show.

@jelanihoward7721 It's honestly shocking how many mistakes Coy makes about comics given his purported expertise. The fact that he once had the audacity to post a video of the greatest comic book/superhero films of all time but had never even seen Superman at the time really shattered his credibility.

My only concern with the show is, are we loving the show because of our comic knowledge? Or we have seen these plot lines play out?
My exapmle is, my wife who knows pretty much nothing about xmen is very confused. I kinda agree. I feel like we pull plot points from all these stories and throw them together. They happen so quick n for her, shes like i dont know whats going on. So i have to walk her through some of these parts. So for that. I wonder if its good or not of a show
I cannot believe that Cyclops is becoming one of my favorite X-Men....1st two episodes he was a badass leader, a caring father, and loving husband. 3rd episode; we see him go through some of the worst pain imaginable as a father and as a husband. When he yells: "Do any of you know how it feels to be abandoned!?" I burst into tears, knowing that pain intimately. The writing on this show is leaps and bounds beyond the OG series, and we're only 3 episodes in.

Great review. I do very much appreciate the gothic horror elements of the episode and like that you guys pointed it out. Also, Coy is correct about Madelyne's comic outfit during the Inferno story, extremely hot.
I also know others have pointed it out already, but Coy did accidentally say that Spiral is Shi'ar when as far as I can tell she's only ever worked for Mojo.

This is one of my most anticipated Marvel projects. Even though I am a few years older. I watched and loved the original cartoon (I rewatched the original series a few years ago) and think this is a brilliant follow up. I love the call backs to the OG series. I, too, noticed the face of Morph after his entanglement with Mr. Sinister from the OG as well as Jean's remembering of the Phoenix force. I remember Apocalypse being involved in the techno-organic virus in the OG and the sending of Jean and Scott's baby to the future.
Episode 3 is my favorite so far.
The line about us being our memories is an apt distillation of the Platonic take of a soul.
As a brazilian I really apreciate that all the Roberto interactions have little glimpses of portuguese language. In the 80's they writing him as a spanish speaker.
Him and Cannonball are my fav X-Men. Especially his Age of Apocalypse variant who Marvel writers didn’t do anything with 😒 he literally became the equivalent of a reality gem.
I thought he was going to be haunted by Juliana but I know the show is changing some origins for the characters.
I absolutely love that they are doing the same condensed story arc type episodes like the original series. Yeah, would have been amazing to get a full season of Inferno, but they way the squashed the important parts into one episode is crazy impressive!

Just feel the need to point out, the storytelling this episode is a perfect microcosm for baseless complaints of toxic fandoms. How long was the episode? Exactly as long as it needed to be. An incredible episode that establishes multiple storylines built on organic character development. Frankly it was almost too ambitious but it works. Stories can be too long or too short but just further proof judging something on it’s runtime is ignorant at best.

This was an amazing episode. It’s probably my favorite one from the horror like tone to just the animation in the action. I’d say this is a 10/10 episode.

I heard a theory that Rogue and Magneto aren’t hooking up. He is actually teaching her to control her powers. In the comics it is revealed she could control her powers this whole time. She was just always paranoid about her powers, she was always active.
I really hope so, because I really see out of character from rogue been cheating on gambit and then be like all normal when she saw him 😢
So cool to see to see MR Sinister back. I glad they keep that Cyclops optic blast limit Mr. Sinister healing factor.
I just watched the episode last night with my dad. I was familiar with Madelyne a little bit, only because I saw her Marvel Legends figure, but it was cool to see her in action. I also liked seeing Roberto again, it’s cool seeing the show turning to characters from the New Mutants like having Warlock in the end of the original cartoon. If they keep putting youngsters in the show, I really hope they bring in Kitty Pride in season 2. But I’m getting ready to see my favourite member of the X Men: Nightcrawler. 😁😁😁💙💙💙
These days I prefer seeing animated things than live action especially when it comes to superhero stuff
