Derek, So well done, it made me really think hard about all of my activities I do with my daughter. I actually let her walk to 7-11 last week for the 1st time and it's 1/2 mile away.
I'm gen X. On the weekends and summer brake after eating breakfast we where told "Go out and play and be back by the time the street lights cam on". That could have been "Don't came back as I don't want to see you back here until the street lights came on" but I am not sure if that was actually the case. If we came home at all before the street lights came on it was around noon and we where feed lunch at who ever house we happen to be at around at. We could be gone from home for 12 hours and our parents where not worried in the slightest where we where or what we where up to. If we showed up at home with being just mildly hurt you know if no bones where broken, badly bleeding, or the like where a trip to the hospital was not badly needed, we where asked if we had fun. I think my mother might have bought hydrogen peroxide by the 50 gallon barrel and band-aids by the pallet. Now days if a kid was out of sight for two seconds parents are outright freaking out and starting to search for their kid and after a few minutes they are calling the cops that their kid was kidnapped or if their kid happen to get the slightest scratch where its not even bleeding they would be throwing the kid into the car to rushing them to the ER. If you notice us Gen Xers are never talked about because we can take care of our self's and don't need to be bothered by the other generations who are totally messed up and are always needing to be blaming each other for being the ones who are destroying society.
My parents did nothing for me. In fact, all they did was hinder and harm. Thank God for after school jobs or I would not have had a single dime. My parents did not teach me how to be independent. It was borne of desperate necessity.
I wish the whole world could see this video!
The answer to life, the universe and everything is fortitude.
Hard to do as a parent, but spot on - less is more definitely applies!

A very eye opening Ted talk! Thank you for the words of wisdom.

Derrick, I could not agree more ... your old Lax buddy from Bingo, Marco
Great!
