There was no Covid stimulus money in EU where I live, but people also here were busting cards like crazy (including myself), it was hard earn money not some free money from government etc
I just want to say thank you for putting out an honest video in the community. You and sportscard radio are only some of the realest out there in this hobby anymore. I collected cards since 91. I sold them off like many in college and got back into it hardcore in 2017. From 2017 to late 2019, no one wanted it. A prizm hobby pack at my card shop I could buy for between 20/25. A box of prizm about 200. A few examples of singles I purchased just to collect. Mahomes optic rookie cost me 40.00, a Luka prizm base for $15, a Luka silver for 80. This product used to sit on retail shelves for years no one wanted it. I remember buying donruss football and donruss optic blasters and hangers of it at Walmart in 2018 with the clearance stickers on it for 9.98 and 4.98 because no one was buying it. No one even thought twice about it other than a collector or fan. Then the investors showed up and the stim money and all of a sudden people are paying $70 for a Shaq topps rookie not even the gold version regular base it’s like what are we doing here. This was never a sustainable “investment” it’s a hobby for a reason. I could go on but I’m sure you get my point!
Americans can’t seem to give up certain lifestyles they’ve grown to love. If you can’t afford going out to eat 3 nights a week, just put it on a credit card. There’s a reason why credit card debt is at all time highs year over year. Just can’t seem to give up things in life even during times of financial need.
The big difference between now and 2020/21 is where the QE money is going. Back then the money went directly to the people in the form of Stimmy checks. Other times and probably soon again it will go to the banks and it's worth will be highly diluted by the time the people see it or feel it's effects. At some point higher inflation will reignite hurting the lower classes but satisfying the Federal govt's needs to pay out it's debts with worthless currency. The Federal Reserve's actions have warped the whole system. And, remember, the Federal Reserve is NOT a government agency. It's a quasi private institution run by the banks. Very convoluted conversation for a hobby channel but it effects the hobby so...
I don't expect ultra modern singles to explode like it did in 2020 with the wave of excess savings, attention to the hobby and "funny money" injected directly to the masses as the FED cuts rates in the upcoming months/years. That felt truly like a black swan moment for the hobby. I do think the lower supply, higher "prestige"(aka demand) cards like we're seeing with 90's inserts and low pop prewar vintage can and will continue to hold/appreciate. That market is made largely of wealthier people who (likely) have significant other assets in terms of stock and real estate, which those markets have seen significant growth of late as well. The value of cards I own has gone up significantly in the past 4+ years but the percentage of wealth that represents for me as a whole is still similarly proportional to what my other assets are now worth as well. Now mix in an economic disaster like a great recession/depression and all bets are off for all those asset groups of course. And theoretically card values would have the hardest time rebounding after such a disaster, relative to more intrinsic/ingrained economic assets.
I think people saying the Covid era hurt the hobby in general is short-sighted. Tons of people got exposed to the hobby during this time which led to hobby all time highs. However since then, the hobby has definitely consolidated and numbers nearly the same since then. If we’re talking about economics, then this is absolutely a positive and natural sign of overall growth. Like with every boom, there is a period of consolidation afterwords, however the long term trend line remains in a positive direction. You see this today where there are still tons of people buying at shows compared to pre-Covid. Fanatics themselves have stated that they’re betting on the continued massive growth of the hobby and are making the financial moves and awareness activations to do so. I am still long term bullish for the hobby.
Dustin, you are 100% right as i have been saying this for years. The way the Fed and The Government reacted after the 2008 Financial crisis created the high cost of living we all have today. College Tuition is more expensive because the Government took over student loans in 2009. Houses are more expensive because the Fed lowered rates so much, it pushed up the prices of houses. Everything we pay for is more expensive because the government injected 2 trillion dollars into the economy in 2021 and pushed inflation that year to 8%. I am not a Republican or Democrat, I am libertarian and this is the reason why. The more government gets involved and tries to good, the worse they make things for us. I feel bad for GenZ as they are priced out of this housing market along with having huge college debts.
This current admin been making all sorts of money, out of thin air, to send overseas. That’s why your mortgage went up. W a strong president therates and prices will go down asap. When the last admin had our “Allies” doing their share of the work we got $2.00 gas. $2.00 GAS!!! Make the right vote today folks.

Government needs to cut spending or we're in serious trouble.
Neither candidate is doing that so we are in trouble.
@rudistorm3348 we are

No Wemby, Clark, or Skenes next year. What’s going to carry the hobby in 2025?
One Word: STAGGGGGFLATION :)
