    I've guarded part of that railyard when it was under lease from the railroad to Freight Car America, that round building is still there, bunch more added since.

    14 J class locomotives were build in Roanoke Shops between 1941 and 1950. Engines #600-#613. 13 were scrapped by 1960, only #611 was saved.

    Very impressive to observe the construction process of the N&W j class locomotives which were the most powerful 4-8-4 type locomotives ever built, the J class had a handsome appearance with their streamlined body. The N&W rr had an impressive variety of steam power during the steam era and their best examples of steam locomotives were the J class, along with the A and Y class series articulated types.
