    I love these. Great for doublets, glass and shell. Yeah, have to be carful not to put too much lateral pressure or the rod will snap. But this is genius and suited perfectly to my style of work

    That “binary script” doublet, if you look at it closely, the big flash, is a giant # 1.
    Look again, I think you’ll be surprised once you see it.
    So cool.

    A lovely way to start the NY. Happy NY to all. Doublets may be much less value wise ,but it does not detract they can look just as beautiful. Thanks for all the effort Phil, much appreciated. Now I have to decide which ones to get set by you when they all done.. The Mintabie piece came up real nice for a pendant I agree.

    Happy New Year mate! Thanks for taking the time to record your process here. Good to see you using it on doublets. One of my original use cases for this design was based on feedback from a lot of new cutters that using wax with doublets they were melting the epoxy when dopping and the heat was causing bubbles in-between the opal and the base. Obviously they were getting things too hot but taking the heat away entirely fixes this issue. Hint, you only need to apply the light for 5-10 seconds. Three minutes is way too long to do you any good. It won't get any harder past about 20 seconds. It has been really helpful seeing how seasoned cutters navigate using these new dop sticks. I'll be using all of my learning from you all to put on a little instruction card that will go in every kit. ta!

      Thanks Riley, good to know, I wasn’t too sure on how well I was applying the UV in case I added to much of the glue, to be sure, to be sure. Happy New Year 🥳👍

      I've had about six months to play around with the different aspects of it. If you flatten the heads of the dops on your wheel and tru them up then it only takes a very small drop of the pookey end a few seconds with the wand to do the trick. @@theopalmills

    Thanks Phil for a great opal 2023. I thank you for your mentorship and your enthusiasm for cutting and mining and explaining the economics and reality of the opal world. I look forward to any projects you might share 2024. Learned so much from the opal dice and doublet making and treating opal to making settings like rings and pendants. Happy new year to you and your family and friends.

    Beautiful effect the black backing made on the stones. The last one you showed was my favorite. I have enjoyed all of your videos this past year. I look forward to your videos in the coming year. I hope you have a wonderful new year Phil.

    Well you're already into the new year, cheaters! Lol. Great last video of the year. I watched Riley's video when he released the kit. It's a great idea, but I'm wary of glass dop sticks, I know I would drop one and shatter it. As for QR codes, if you are not absolutely certain of the source of the code, you could be intriguing maleware into your device.
    Anyway, happy 2024!

    Nice looking opals ( even if they are doublets ) and very interesting to see you use a glass dop stick ( I didn't know that those did exist )! Happy New Year Phil and I wish you and your family a great ending of 2023 and an even better start on 2024, take care! ❤

    What are the values of doublets? They should be worth a lot. They make the stones pop. But I know the value decreases which sucks in my opinion 😂

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  6 месяцев назад

      Considering the value of the opal prior to making a doublet, the value increases. The part that confuses people is that, the new look of the stone is what gains in value, as opposed to not having made it a doublet to start with and its value, combined with, “it’s not worth what it would be if it were a solid”, but this refers to “less than a solid stone by comparison with its new look”, not “it’s new look in comparison to if it had been left as a solid originally.” You wouldn’t doublet material that can cut a valuable gem unless it increases its price, even with doublet prices this is possible. Mostly material that is too thin for solids, or, would greatly benefit from a black background, is used. 🤪👍

    Im not sure i get the hype over this kit, can get the same job done with regular super glue and chopstick? or am i missing something hahaha i use superglue daily for dopping with no wax or no issues removing.
    Happy new year man! hope will be filled with many tasty doublets and stones :P

    Hi Phil, happy New Year, 2024.
    What do you think a good price is for black potch for doublets?
    I want to make a handful of doublets and need backing material.
    Cheers.

      Happy New Year 🥳👍 I’ve heard of au$100/kg for black potch, not sure who the supplier was, but you should be able to source some in a low grade Lightning ridge parcel, or ask the supplier if they can help, Riley Gunn NN Opals or Robert Short Opal shop, both online sellers.

    Interesting.. ur using glass vs wooden dops. Have you noticed a difference. Does it slip more…

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  8 месяцев назад +1

      G’day mate, yes, there’s a bit of difference, mostly the glass aspect and how much sideways pressure I apply when cutting, but being in no hurry helps. The grip isn’t all that slippery, but it does spin smoothly when rotating the stone. Happy New Year 🥳👍
