    I tried teaching malayalam to my Punjabi grandma next door here in Chandigarh.
    "Bhakshanam kazhichoo?" - Have you eaten food yet?
    And to this day, every time she sees me,
    "Paashaanam kashichoo?" - Have you eaten poison yet?
    With my non stop talking, very understandable query indeed.

  • @darthpsykoz
    @darthpsykoz 6 месяцев назад +12

    Ok, so the main reason Malayalam sounds so fast is because there are a lot of compound words, basically there are no spaces between words (at least historically), so the words flow from one to the next and you distort the ends of each word to merge them in a smooth way. For example: Avan (he) + evide? (where) = avanevide? (where's he), literally no space between words when you speak. I have seen similar behavior in French with what is called "liason".

    1.The written formal term for friend in malayalam is "suhruthu" {pronounced as su- hru- thu) 2.Another common but old word is "mithram" { pronounced as myth - rum, say both words fast and thats it} but nowadays the trolls and social media use it for a specific political party members to tease them. (word origin from mitr hindi)
    3. a lesser formal world is "koottukaaran" {pronounced as koo - ttu- kaar-ran, both r sould should be together} - this is a commonly used term and when mallus use it in speed they may shorten it and use it as koottaaran, depending on dialect speed.
    4. "Changaathi" (pronounce it as chang - aathi as in two names and speed it up to make it one word) is another common term, again mallus may speed it up even more and end up as "changaayi"..
    the words like chunk (meaning heart) in this context is used for bestfriends... {2k kids use -chunks for males and chunkathis for females}

    Su-hru-thu is used scaresely. It is for the most part used formally. What's used in daily conversations are below: (some are gender specific)
    Kuu-ttu-kaari = a female friend
    Kuu-ttu-kaaran = a male friend
    Chan-gaathi = friend (gender neutral in daily use)
    Chan-gaayi= short/informal version of changaathi, gender neautral
    Chang = for very close friends (gender neautral)
    Ps: These words do not change depending on the gender of the person who speaks them. It only changes with respect to the person we refer to.
    Each of these words' plurals are;
    Kuuttu-kaari-maar (female friends) kuuttaari-maar short/informal
    Kuuttu-kaaran-maar (male friends)
    Kuuttaaran-maar in short/informal
    Changaathi-maar (formal and informal)
    Informal= changaayi-maar
    Short=Changs
