How is it a master piece? As a marketing executive u fail to see how filming the sea, a skyline, a slowed down footage of tiger running, and then a esso petrol station advertises what the quality of engine oil can do for your vehicle.

Fantastic tune and yes, always gives me goosebumps too. It goes perfectly with the image of the Tiger. That slow build up and the final crescendo over that heroic head shot. All those years ago and never forgotten.

I remember this advert so well, the music (more than the image of the tiger) ALWAYS stuck in my mind! I never knew, until very recently, that it was composed by Jeff Wayne! Every time I hear it, it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!! It's such a short piece of music but it made a massive impression on me as a teenager, very powerful and emotional in such a short space, a credit to the composer!

I can only echo the sentiments of the other comments. I too remember this from back in the 70s when I was still a kid in school.
Seeing this and so many other great ads back then I can remember thinking that I can't wait to grow up and go out there, see the world etc.
Of course, as you do get older you start to realize that few things are quite as glamorous as they look on TV 🤣 . BTW- I'm sure I'm not the only one that wondered what happened to the tiger in the ad?
In fact, they actually used a number of different tigers over the decades, including, of course, the original live one (as opposed to the cartoon version) who have all long since passed away from old age.
Such is life. It was an ingenious idea though, to use a real-life tiger to get the "tiger in your tank" idea across, they are incredibly majestic creatures and then couple that with the music by Jeff Wayne, it couldn't fail as an ad campaign. Thanks.

Used to love the Esso ads, I still have the tigers tail Esso gave away at their petrol stations in the early 60s.

McCann Erickson don't have a copy either. Neither does the BBC Gram archive. You'd be doing the world a favour as for many folk of our generation, it's the best piece of music of our childhoods.

@@MPW159 Sorry for the delayed reply.
My version was given to me on a TDK SA cassette tape, one of the better tapes of its era - trouble is, it doesn't use the potential quality - the SQ is less than desirable, including a dropout or two.
Most artists (rightly) wouldn't want sub-standard versions of their work published.
However, based on the 'something is better than nothing' theory and the fact that you say Jeff would be OK with it, I will (eventually) digitise / upload (even though I've never uploaded anything to YT).

One of the tigers used in the Esso adverts was called Tango. After Esso finished with him they dumped him in a dodgy eastern European zoo but after some years he was rescued by Woodside Wildlife Park in Lincolnshire. He managed to live the rest of his days in the company of a younger tigress and died late last year.

The BBC don't have a copy (I checked) so I wrote to Jeff Wayne and I don't think he has one either unless it's deep in the archive at Jeff Wayne Music. Everyone at McCann Erickson who was there at the time are now dead or left the company, and they probably would have been supplied the final mix (with V/O) for the job. Lost forever?
