  • 16 minutes of nostalgic "Esso" (now Exxon) commercials, their "7 point service", their 'catch-phrases' (including their most popular one), classic cars, some strange chemicals and a little corporate history. Do you remember any of these?

@@David-yw2lv - The US government charged Standard Oil with monopoly laws in the early 1900s so the company broke up into different companies to avoid any trouble. ESSO is still a brand here in most of Canada, while in British Columbia it's CHEVRON , and MOBIL has recently been introduced at some locations.

    • @straightpipediesel

@@David-yw2lv To expand on the other comment, when Standard Oil was broken up due to anti-trust, each of the smaller regional companies got the rights to use the Standard Oil name in their territories. To sell in another company's territory, they needed a different name, which is why most companies changed name and Standard disappeared. Standard Oil of New Jersey decided to use Esso, which sounds like S O or Standard Oil. Several of the other Standards sued, and in 1937 outside of the states Jersey Standard had rights, they were forced to use a different name, which was Humble and Enco. In 1973, with mass media and travel, they decided to unify one name, which they chose Exxon.

ESSO is still a brand in Canada. Owned by Imperial Oil which is the Standard OIl of Canada. My dad worked for the company and I , as a kid 9 to 13 years old used to "help out" at the warehouse stocking shelves with ATLAS auto parts. I liked riding in the tanker trucks with the guys delivering gas to farmers and gas stations. I remember "Put A Tiger In Your Tank" ! The official "Esso man" in Canada was played by Murray Westgate in commercials during Hockey Night in Canada TV broadcasts.

When I was a kid there was an Esso station at the end of the street. They would work in your car, replace tires and even wash & wax the car. When we pulled up, the gas was .25/ gallon and at that price they would vacuum the car, clean the ask trays, wash the windows inside & out, and check under the hood as well as your tire pressure. The store became Exxon in 1972. They still worked on cars but then you paid extra for full service. They closed in 1980 and the station became a veterinarian clinic. I miss the old place, as kids we would ride our lawn mower mini bikes through the woods to the Esso station to fill up with gas , .10 cents did it, then it was off to the woods for a day of riding. Simple times.

I remember those days. An attendant would pump your gas, check your oil, check your brake fluid, check your water, check your tires, clean your windshield, give you free maps, give free toys for the kids, give free dishware to the homemakers, and give you a smile.

      Hello from UK.
I didn't know all that had stopped.
Never having been to the US, as a great lover of old black and white films, what I've seen in those films at petrol stations is how I've always imagined it.
We in the UK used to have such services, too, I'm told: but not during my lifetime.
Still, at least it puts you in more control.
I think all petrol pumps should be card only, now. I once genuinely forgot my wallet, and had to write my name and details in a book; the entries of those who hadn't paid was great.

@@heathstjohn6775 Wow. How is it possible to not notice? Don't be fooled by our propaganda. The America of old black and white TVs and movies is long gone and buried.
It's so bad now that George Orwell's 1984 barely stirs any reaction. Men in America are ruined for far less than what Winston did against Big Brother.

It was weird when we moved East years later and I saw ESSO with same logo and colors and ads and thought somebody messed up ! But no, Humble couldn't use ESSO name in several States because ESSO phonetically is SO which is Standard Oil and they had 1st rights to "SO" name in those States.
