The decision to charge unprotected lithium cells in Series without balanceing or even portection circuits is just stupid. It is easy to get batteries unbalanced even if they are from the same batch and have tested less than like 50mah appart. ESPECIALY over a longer period of time and if they sit around for a sumemr or somthing. This is just dangerous and that was the reason i didnt buy one of the 1 trillion lumen 30€ amazon lights because they had a weird 2S battery that was even heatshrinked together
The star of the show here is the Convoy M21G running at 1500+ lumen for 2 hours, (see runtime graph). Forget about momentary burst used only in flash photography. This is a flashlight (torch). If M21G came with high CRI 70.3, I would snatch it up!
Glad you noticed. I added that graph mainly to stop people saying the TS30S Pro is the best. It's the worst for sustainable output, it's only good for brief bursts.
Just finished watching your review. I purchased this light early on without any notions of the bugs you've uncovered, which I find disappointing considering the SP60 has a beam profile as close to perfection as I have experienced. In fact, it produces the best beam profile of any of my throwers. I like yourself, like the M21G too except for the annoying, out of the box ring artifacts, which are absent on the SP60. Knowing the issues you've found, I will charge this light with an external charger and avoid using the built-in charger. It's a shame that this flashlight is buggy and I salute your resolve not to sell it due to safety concerns. Moving away from the negatives of the SP60, your presentation was visually stunning and top notch as usual! I appreciated the introduction of the wildlife too, which included the cute marsupial critter in the tree! Thanks for the excellent review and for uncovering the weak points on this flashlight! Also I agree with your comments for Sofirn stepping up to improve the driver on this model. All in all I still love this light. - Cheers!
13:08 I think i might have a possible explanaition for this behavior. a normal USB adapter has a output voltage of 5V and some QC adapters have sometimes 9V or higher. assuming that the charger provides the standardised 9v of a quick charge output to the light the light would need to work as a buck converter to efficiently convert the 9v into 6-8.4 for the battery. so accoring to my theory the battery wont tharge more than 8.something V becuase buck converters must have lower output voltage than the input that could be the explanaition. that would mean that the light would need to act as a boost converter when plugged in to 5V and could charge the light up to its intended cell voltage (regardless if it exceeds the 4.16V or even 4.2V if you will). i am unsure if i am going to buy one but if i do i will try to prove or disprove this theory.
Don’t know why I haven’t seen this channel before! Your reviews are in depth and honest (as far as I can tell) and you really dig into issues that I find important for a flashlight - such as the onboard charging challenges. I don’t trust most of them anyway and use a trusted dedicated external charger for that reason. Anyway, nice review format and excellent beam shots that are well thought-out. Going to see some of your earlier reviews of flashlights I might already have. Keep up the great content, and thanks for sharing!
A great and honest review. Such a shame about the perplexing set of issues, hopefully they see fit to address these not least for the potential safety concerns. You have such a great setting for beam shots there it really demonstrates the qualities of each light perfectly. You're in a beautiful corner of the world that's for sure.
Thanks for the explanation about voltage, I didn't know about these defects and risks. I'm trying to get a flashlight from a battery so as not to run any risks.
Use the bundled batteries and charge on an external charger, Just keep an eye on the voltages now and then, yours might be a matched pair. Most of the mentioned bugs were only caused from unscrewing the head to lock out the light, so by just not using the onboard charging you'll be quite happy with it. You could get some Molicel P42A or P45B 21700's.
Thank you for the highlight of this torch J!, The hotspot of this sp60 is tighter than m21g, and the UI is far superior than Convoys. For me; both lights are good. Regarding the charging issue, agree its better and safer to use external charging for any series configuration, pity Sofirn seems to rush this series to the masses. Me myself thinking to get the M21g and twiddling with sbt90 or xhp50.2 3v or 50.3 HI 3v (if it exist) and swap the driver. O and that marsupial critter is sweet 🤗
Any recommendations for a flashlight with a 21700 battery with these xhp70.3 qualities?Any recommendations for a flashlight with a 21700 battery with these xhp70.3 qualities?
Erotic music lol the genre is very popular, it's called Future Garage or Chillout. I personally find it quite suitable to my review format, but understand not everyone enjoys the same music. Maybe some Opera would tickle your fancy 🤣. I personally would stay far away from any model that uses unprotected cells that charge in series. Charge at your own risk or use an external charger.
@@PiercingTheDarkness thank you, I do plan on using an external charger. Would you recommend getting different batteries? And if so what would you recommend?
Does it run fine without inner tube? Ie just leave it out and remove batteries to charge.( I generally do not use the built in chargers on my removable multi cell torches anyway). Beam shots look good, so would likely sell well, with issues fixed.
Sofirn has some shocking quality control issues since 2019 which is why I discontinued selling them. The only reason why my customers didn't see this is because of my top QC testing, I found whole orders arrive faulty, flickering LEDs, charging issues, uneven shelves so the LEDs would burn out, left over flux on the LEDs from soldering. I first was very tempted when I first took it outside to play, but it's not worth the potential problems. Fine for an individual to buy directly from Sofirn though, but not wise for a store to sell Sofirn models. Even the IF22A model you purchased off me came with 4 other units with issues I had replaced, this is why I never imported more. I switched over to the Convoy brand and have never received one back for repair. It works perfectly fine without the inner tube, but the batteries are very loose and need something wrapped around them, perhaps some thick orings. Use it with the inner tube and just don't unscrew the head to lock out, the parasitic/standby drain is so low that it's not needed anyway. I would highly recommend using Molicel 21700 batteries like the P42A or P45B. I used the Sofirn batteries in the Convoy M21G runtime test and they were uneven voltages, so the batteries are definitely not a matched pair.
@@PiercingTheDarkness Thanks. Is there a larger diameter cell that would fit in, rather than use o-rings etc? Let me know if you want to move it on anyway(no warranty).
@@Retiredkiwi Haha, I'll hold onto it for other reviews to use for a comparison. No other size I'm aware of would fit. One could cover the positive end of the tube so it doesn't make contact with the driver, this would be best. It looks to have a plastic sleeve to separate the inner and outer tube, if you could remove this it would be 26.2mm for a 26650 battery, some would fit, but they'd be a bit short and would require a few spacers which can be found on the Convoy store.
@@PiercingTheDarkness Sounds interesting, look forward to review. 👍 Love the X75, but twice the range with similar spread would definitely be better still 😄

A bit confused by the beam shots and rating. Cree 70.3 outperforms STB90.2, and at a lower K temp? This is confusing.
