Referring to high Muslim immigration and birthrates in Europe, political commentator and cultural critic Mark Steyn poses the question, "What would be so wrong if the Western world [became] Muslim?"
-----
Mark Steyn is a writer, political commentator, and cultural critic. He has written five books, including America Alone: The End of the World As We Know It, a New York Times bestseller.
Responding to critics who have called his America Alone "alarmist," Steyn defends the tone and central premise of his book. "This book is about...the larger forces at play in the developed world that have left Europe too enfeebled to resist its remorseless transformation into Eurabia and that call into question the future of much of the rest of the world, including the United States, Canada, and beyond."
According to Steyn, these forces include demographic decline in Europe, the unsustainability of the advanced Western social-democratic state, and civilizational exhaustion. Finally, in the face of these forces, Steyn offers what he believes America must do. - Hoover Institution

This video seems to date back almost 10 years to 2010. In light of what has happened since this can only be called prophetic. Why did no one listen to him.
Where is he now?
Clear off you racist
"The appeal to novelty (also called argumentum ad novitatem) is a fallacy in which one prematurely claims that an idea or proposal is correct or superior, exclusively because it is new and modern. In a controversy between status quo and new inventions, an appeal to novelty argument is not in itself a valid argument."
Anyone would rather live in a wealthy western society than a poor secular society.
Whole world is secular today there is no dar al Islam. He is making an appeal to novelty, may Allah guide him.
And that is my point exactly! Name one Islamic city where you would want to raise a family? Case closed.
The dark ages would be back
History begs to differ, but then again, I'm not sure whether your alternate facts trump all evidences. -_-
@Gyri Sulcie #alternatefactsmatter -_-
Cicero Araujo Islam took you out of the dark ages
@@almostafa4725 yes, beheadings, forced hijabs, hand chopping, jihad, crucifixion, suicide bombers and quran.
@@shahamir6674 -)I dont understand you people how many we say *no we are not*
I truly agree with the statement which is clearly not an answer to the question.
When a religion is practiced by a certain nation it results in a new culture formed from the combination of two things firstly from what is understood from the teaching of that particular religion and secondly from residues of their old culture.
So if western world to embrace islam the results will be completely different from what we see in Arab world
What about western army in middle east 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
the jews are middle eastren , and so is the IDF
Those "waves of immigrants" came from Europe. They were all Caucasian and they all shared the same religions. The assimililation process was MUCH simpler than what is happening today. America did not accept "waves" of Indians, Middle Easterners, Chinese and Mexicans until very recently. I'm telling you as a New Yorker that they DO NOT assimilate as easily as Europeans were able to. The word is still out as to whether America can assimilate the massive third-world immigration taking place today.
Did you ever ask a Muslim if he/she wants the world to all become Muslim? Or ask the Quran for that matter which says "you have your religion, I have mine", " let him who please believe, and let him who please disbelieve".
What if? IF??? WHEN better say...
@epitome its a matter of time dear just wait

You are the ignorant one little pig.
The more secular a nation the safer and higher the well being of its people.
I wouldn't want Islamic nations turn western aswell.
@Kurtlane "Russia's ethnically diverse north caucasus region has been gripped by violence stemming from two separatist wars and further fuelled by poverty, official corruption and alleged police abuses."
Everyone overlooks this until the media inserts one little word. for example "Muslims in Russia's ethnically diverse"
Mark, I love your articles in MacLeans, I recieved a subscription from my wife`s grand mother and your colum is the first one I look at; look forward to it every week. I am currently reading the series by Robert Ferrigno. You guys (I include you with Hutchings) keep up the good work. SD
Your race is your religion ...... and your race is your nation.
So what do you suggest?
Thank God for people like Mark Steyn
I'm an Egyptian Muslim living in Canada, I don't wanna live in Cairo either not because of Islam, Silly. Do you homework first then speak up.
Sick Intellect.
Bravo Mr Steyn, Bravo. I agree 100%.
RESPECTED Mark Steyn, You are still have time to SAVE your COUNTRIES remember GOD has given you WOSDOM to handle MANKIND remember MUSLIMS ARE nothing if you use WISDON according to your LAWS. May LORD bless you and your friends, family, working team and you please read below and pray for Christians living in Muslims Countries and do support us after reading below message. Stay blessed

@dallas998
I have to say, I've never really understood this juxtaposition between "left" and "right". What is each label supposed to mean? Initially I thought it meant left being democrat, and right republican, but that doesn't seem to really be the case anymore.
What would happen if the "West" became Muslim? For example we would start producing 40 scientific peer reviewed articles per 100k citizens instead of the currently produced 1130 scientific peer reviewed articles per 100k citizens... There are many other, perhaps even more important issues too.
Ther is also Archbishop Butrus Moua'lem, who in 1998 was appointed Greek-Catholic bishop to the Galilee. He is tied to Syrian intelligence and to hostile Palestinian forces such as Archbishop Hilarion Capucci and Palestinian Foreign Minister Farouk Kedoumi. Israel’s government tried to bar him from entering Israel, but pulled back.
With friends like that, who needs enemies.
Steyn is absolutely correct......
that man makes a lot of sense
@PjRjHj What bad things of Islam do you speak of? Just because the West stands up for its perceived values does not make them right?
@dallas998
Agreed. I think one of the top priorities in the world ought to be refining our political systems. It seems like too much is outdated. At the same time, with the people in charge right now, I'm not sure I would trust them to come up with something new either.
In early June, 2002 he held talks with Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Velayati on the question of Jerusalem and "Palestine". Tehran's IRIB Television reported (June 3) that Capucci told the Iranian that "the Muslim people of Iran are revolutionary standard-bearers of humanitarian and moral values" and praised them for their support of "the just struggle of the Palestinian people."
He was on board Mavi Marmara - a Turkish "humanitarian" ship that tried to break the Gaza blockade.

@Kurtlane As for Sirat Rasul, this is a history book. It has many stories about events from many sources. Some verified some not verified. Some from Christian sources some from Jewish sources. All things were included to tell the history of the time, what people had been saying.
Plus if you knew anything about the science of Hadith you would know with out verification, many criteria to be considered (source of story, , they are not allowed to be used for Islamic law or teachings.
Even that character who killed his wife wasn't just any Muslim. He was Muzzammil Hassan, the head of Bridges TV, American-Islamic TV channel which describes itself as "seeking to improve the image of Muslims in the United States." The hypocrisy of someone claiming that and then cutting off his wife's head is what made the case famous. Rightly so.
(cont.)
@Kurtlane As for my earlier post about Ka'b bin Ashraf I made a mistake about the name. My bad, appoligies. There is another fabricated story about a man being killed not in the Authentic Hadith collections. Forgot his name
Side note, when I first heard this I asked many Muslims about these people. Most of them did not even know about Asma Bint Marwan because it is not authentic so we don't spread false stories. they did know Ka'b bin Ashraf because the action was justified.
@amaqula Alos, half the paintings of your great artists depict ancient events from roman and greek history and mythology!
I give this idea some thought.
@amaqula, sorry but I don't hear the Pope making the kinds of statements Mark Steyn, Geert Wilders, Ayaan Hirsi Ali or Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff are making.
I'd love to hear such things from His Holiness. Maybe you can suggest it to him.
Way into the article it mentioned that "media reports said some were Algerian" and "A street sweeper at the depot said at least one of those arrested was Algerian and he believed all five were from North Africa."
I doubt there are that many Algerian Anglicans, expecially since about a decade ago Muslim extremists in Algeria told every foreigner to leave or be killed.
(cont.)
@Kurtlane Fighting is prescribed is a specific example used, that even though killing is difficult you must do it in defense of yourself. Muslims were being persecuted and killed. The next part of the verse is general. "You hate a THING..." This can apply to anything. Medicines can taste bad but they are good for you.
@Emasraw22, the problem with "in context" quotes is that Mohammed attacked others and claimed that he was attacked or about to be attacked. So if "in context" means looking at the whole verse or group of verses, it looks reasonable: he was attracked and defended himself.
But if "in context" means looking at what really happened (and you need Hadith to figure that out), it's not reasonable at all, because it was Mohammed that attacked, and then lied about it.
@amaqula And take Caravaggio, for example. great catholic artist... but where did he get his inspiration? You don`t think there is a hint of classical Greece and its depiction of men in his paintings?
@Kurtlane How can you tell me what I am. I am a Muslim. I don't go in for these various groups. I learn for myself what the teachings are. When a Muslim brother tells me something I do not blindly follow. I research the topic from as many sources as possible to understand the issue for my self. That is why I became a Muslim I decided for myself, I didn't blindly follow anyones point of view. If I had blindly followed I would not have become Muslim. I use to think like you did and see all hate.
@Darusdei The Palestinians have a saying: "First comes Saturday, then comes Sunday".
Meaning - first we take care of the Jews (whose holy day is Saturday), then we take care of the Christians (who pray on Sundays).
Don't believe me? google it...
@cyberdaemon Why does the media avoid the good things about Islam. Like charity or treating people justly. These are things that are universally accepted. And since everyone agrees that punishment for crime or being nice and charitable are good things they have no interest because it does not sell. We agree on something where is the profit in that.
@Kurtlane [cont 3] I agree with you killing non-combatants is murder so does the Quran [17:33] "Nor take life - which Allah has made sacred - except for just cause. And if anyone is slain wrongfully, we have given his heir authority (to demand qisas or to forgive): but let him nor exceed bounds in the matter of taking life; for he is helped (by the Law)."
I have his book and it is brilliant and of course the truth.
Let us also observe that where dictatorships are not extant in the muslim world, such as Malaysia & Turkey, there is a thriving, dynamic, forward-thinking nation at work. Yes, even in much-maligned Iran.
Contrary to all the "freedom & democracy" rhetoric, Western establishments' worst nightmare is democracy in the muslim world!
"[I]t is no exaggeration to say that what we presumptuously call “Western” culture is owed in large measure to the Andalusian enlightenment." (C. Hitchens)
@PjRjHj Please read your history books. You are mixing up your facts. Killings, forced migrations and forced conversions happened under the Christians once Ferdinand and Isabella conquered Spain - See "Spanish inquisition". Under the Islamic empire, all three faiths lived in peace making Spain the most sophisticated country in Europe. The rest of Europe was in the dark ages.
Dhimmitude is a modern word coined by Christians to spread fear and is inaccurate in the context of Spanish history
@iknewitalready
As a "nonwhite" (native american), I never once had to give up my seat, and I gravitate towards the front of the bus. People aren't like that today, so don't punish us for the sins of our grandparents, lest we do the same to you.
I regret to inform you that the Cities you mention were seats of science and culture IN SPITE of Islam, not because of it. You must know this?
Or should I list the Muslim conquest of Europe, of Spain, of Italy, or France, fall of Constantinople, Greece, Romania, Hungary, the siege of Vienna and the conquest of Cyprus?
Or would you prefer if I list the violent passages in the Koran?
How about this:
"War is prescribed for you, though it is hateful unto you. But it is possible that ye hate a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not."
2:216

He doesn't seem to be just asking about what would happen if the West turned Muslim. He is being more specific in conjecturing about a West turned majority Muslim where most of the politicians were Muslim and the laws were based on Muslim culture and customs. He doesn't necessarily mean a West turned into a Muslim theocracy, but that could be what he is saying. I don't think such an extreme scenario is likely in most Western countries.
Or:
"It is not fitting for any apostle that he should have prisoners of war until he hath made slaughter in the land."
8:67

Or:
"But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practice regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful."
9:5
(cont.)
@Kurtlane Ka'b is in the hadith and I accept the reason for his execution. As I mentioned Asma Bint Marwan is not in the hadith collections. Fabricated
My conclusions about you are based on your own phrase, "Islam is a complete system to govern humanity." Once one thinks he knows such system, there is no attrocity he is not capable of committing to bring humanity there. What the system is, whether it's Communism or Fascism or Islam or whatever else does not really matter - "Utopia always works," i.e. it always ends in a bloodbath.
@amaqula
Now that i think of it, your reasoning similar, if not identical, to Platon`s theories serves as the perfect example of what i´ve been talking about all day. What you just said about logic is a good example of how Christianity has adapted ancient ideas to serve it´s own ends, thus in the process distorting them of course.
Those who are so welcoming to a retrograde society and believe they can live side by side as good neighbors should inquire into what's become of Jerusalem in the last 20 years.
(cont. quote form Khomeini)
""There are hundreds of other [Koranic] psalms and hadiths [sayings of the prophet] urging Muslims to value war and to fight. Does all that mean that Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war? I spit upon those foolish souls who make such a claim."
Who should I trust: you or Khomeini?
If you really believed Islam is non-violent, you'd talk not to me, but to your co-religionists, trying to convince them to keep away from this great sin.
(cont.)
But it is true, Rome and Greece has nothing to offer us TODAY. But only because we have already exhausted their rich heritage and consolidated it into our own civilization.
I can't be suspected of loving islamism, but I think that some, by their provocative attitude, do what they can to stir it up.
he forgot about dubai. mecca. afghanistan. pakistan. asia. ethiopians. somalians, so many more. dubai is like america, just brown.
"Allah's Messenger said, "Who is ready to kill Ka’b bin Ashraf? He has said injurious things about Allah and His apostle." Maslama got up saying, "Would you like me to kill him?" The prophet proclaimed, "Yes." Maslama said, "Then allow me to lie so that I will be able to deceive him." Muhammad said, "You may do so."

I am not a European, and so I cannot tell them what to do. But I do have a few reasonably humane ideas how to cope with the problem.
How about stopping all immigration to Europe to begin with?
How about reducing welfare payments, in order to encourage immigrants get education and find work?
How about revoking the citizenship of any immigrant who is involved in crime or terrorism, and returning him to his homeland?
I don't know if that will solve the problem, but it will certainly be a good start
"Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves humiliated."
9:29
Pay jizya, be humiliated. Or else be slaughtered. How peaceful, how just, how merciful (sarcasm).

@Albanian2Be Wrong - there is no comparison btwn the two. Christians don't band together as a family and honor kill members. Christians don't make women wear tents and face veils or exclude girls b/c they are menstruating. Our women can talk to men. go to school, have careers and drive, marry who they want and dress how they want. Christians don't engage in polygamy or marry their brothers/sisters or first cousins. Christians don't behead homosexuals either.
@amaqula "A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs. The predominant usage in modern English refers to persons hostile to those of differing race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, various mental disorders, or religion."
@elbazart I swear to you I am from Saudi Arabia and we are descendants of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. It's a few years and then we will capture the world and will become the dominant religion of Islam to the world and this is a promise from God.
Look at my 1st comment again then --time is of the essence .
@Kurtlane Actual I am a Muslim who follows the Sunnah of the prophet like all Muslims. They call us Sunni not I. All Muslims follow the Sunnah of the prophet even the Shia. The difference is the other groups follow other people as well. Shia believe certain things about Ali the prophets cousin and Fatima the prophets daughter.
Other groups go so as far as to follow other people they claim are prophets. Just like Christianity you have various groups.
I do not like the name, I am a Muslim.
@Darusdei Furthermore - Israel has evacuated settlers as a part of a peace agreement before. When the peace agreement with Egypt was signed, thousands of settles were evacuated from the Sinai peninsula which was fully returned. So as you can see, settlers were never a real obstacle to peace.
The only obstacle to peace is the ongoing Palestinian unwillingness to recognize Israel as the Jewish homeland, and their (not so) secret hope to annihilate us altogether one day.
@Emasraw22, I am far more aware of all these things than you give me credit for.
I am aware for example, that Maimonides ran for his life in 1165, when Almohad ruler declared all Jews must convert to Islam.
Judah ha-Kohen ibn Shushan wasn't so lucky. He was burned alive for refusing to convert.
(cont.)
@cyberdaemon I wish that were so. I lived my life that way for a long time, thinking that I could be good in the world without a "religion" but I came to the realization that I was religious. I do not believe in religion exclusively as the belief in a divine power. I was living my own religion, my own collection of practices and beliefs based on my whims and desires. Now the big problem, my whims and desires were not always compatible with someone else's. Conflict arises. Then what?
@cosmopolite66 The European West is of secular societies as long as the majority population wish it to be. If the majority suddenly wanted an Islamic theocracy, then a vote would be held (as votes are in democratic societies) and if the ballet initiative passed, then Sharia would be put in place and the whole of the population would be subject to it and the respect that you grant others would suddenly not be granted to you if your behavior was deemed un-Islamic. MAJORITY RULES.
the thing is the more freedom u get the less security
some parts of the world believe it or not value security more then freedom
it has nothing to do with being muslim or anything like that
@IAmOpenMinded My country Israel does not drop bombs on civilians (not intentionally, anyway).
We do that only when we know for sure that the target is an armed terrorist, and that others will not be harmed (though accidents do happen every now and then). Many times an attack has been aborted due to civilians present near by.
I don't know if the US or Britain are acting the same, and I cannot speak on their behalf.
Although great national wealth may be present in these countries, poverty is still greater than in "poorer" Protestant countries.
Also, long before Christendom was even an obscure idea, great civilizations responsible for the greatest heritage of the West had already existed for hundreds of years, and some had already died away: namely, the Greek/Hellenistic and the Roman civilizations. Rome and Greece are the true founders of the West. Ever heard of the renaissance?
That's a miracle of Allah..Alhamdulillah. Find yourself another country if you cannot stay in Europe in the near future.
The Western world would no longer be western anymore.
@amaqula
Indeed, Catholicism founded Christian civilization, but Christian civilization is not Western civilization, it is only part of it. The West was defined as different from the East 1,200 years before Christianity existed. We had a defining war with the Persians 500 years before Christ, and what defined us then still define us.
So he attacks multiculturalism, and then end on a note of praising pluralism...
@bittercottoncandy
Its political.
Some people find the peace in islam and at the same time don't like what they see in the world, injustices. But they themselves then commit these horrific acts and justifying it by using verses from the Quran totally out of context.
Quran does speak of War but self defence, nowhere does it mention to be the agressors.
People take these verses of warfare and make it as if its instructing people to commit murder.
What purpose would that serve?
People. Just read the quran once and at least you can have a valid argument.
Not just excerpts that has no beginning or end. Or at least read a whole chapter. The shortest chapter is three verses, and then make an argument about that chapter. E.g warfare, marriage, propagation etc etc.
@amaqula Now, I leave that Protestantism vs. Catholicism to you, I don`t really involve myself in that question to that extent. But no, saying that Catholicism was the basis of western civilization even in AD times is wrong. The centuries AD was first about silencing the ideas of antiquity, only to then rediscover them. That they were rediscovered during Catholic times doesn`t make them Catholic - they were originally the product of Rome and Greece, Christians simply unveiled them.
@cosmopolite66 Not as long as religion is allowed (and has been doing for at least a decade) to present itself not just as a religion, but as a cultural identity. It is why people who have genuine concerns with Islam are called racist even if the criticism is entirely faith/ideology based and has nothing to do with the shade of one's skin. It is arrogant to think that secular liberalism is naturally viewed as better than a strict religious life, especially when you're exposed to nothing else.
@AmdanAbla99
keep diggin'
you'll always find someone who wrote something you like, you can even make up your own ... lol
@Kurtlane I asked the question to prove the point which you did. People see Islam as black and white which is not the case. There are conditions for everything.
i.e. True Sharia law:
If a man murders my child, I as the father can "Forgive" the murderer as an act of mercy. He will have to pay reparations instead of being put to death.
Now if I was in that situation could I do it I do not know but under "Proper Sharia Law" it is an option.
Islamic countries use some parts of Islamic law not all
"Then the apostle heard that Abu Sufyan bin Harb was coming from Syria with a large caravan of Quraysh, containing their money and merchandise, accompanied by some 30 or 40 men. Mohammed said, 'This is the Quraysh caravan containing their property. Go out and attack it, perhaps God will give as prey.'"
Ibn Ishaq. Sirat Rasul Allah, p. 428
(also in Tabari 7:29)
What can I say?
@ProphetJephri And Catholicism spread how exactly?
@u2beandme: You just proved two points;
#1: the cultural divide is so great that Muslims apparently cannot understand that the West is not defined by Christianity; it was once, it isn't now.
This leads to point #2: Muslims are living in the past, clinging to Dark Ages morality. All the complaints you've raised of the West are history; we have done away with all of them because we recognized that they were barbaric. You cannot say the same of Islam's barbarism, which persists to this day.
@amaqula All logic you say? Do you know that logic is a Greek philosophy, of which Aristotle was a early proponent? And about Christ in art... that´s your opnion, and there are a lot of opinions on art. No matter how you twist and turn, you can`t deny that classical Greek and Roman motives in the art is prevailing, on at least a par with Christian motives. And all those artists who painted Christ also painted Zeus, the Horatians, Prometheus etc, etc.
@Darusdei As for your wish "to keep Europe out of it" - I am afraid Europe is mixed up in Jihad for centuries now. Muslims have occupied Spain for eight hundred years. They would have conquered the rest of Europe had they not been defeated in the Battle of Poitiers (732), and again in the Battle of Vienna (1683).
Nowadays Jihad activists are hoping to fulfill what their ancestors have failed to do, and they are speaking about it quite freely. You are invited to look it up.
@amaqula The thing is that romans only enslaved non-citizens. The roman system wasn`t feudalism. Surely they had slaves, but the grandson of a slave could also become a senator, or even emperor. A citizen was freer than any other people on earth. In feudal Europe, all citizens were in effect slaves as to their rights - namely, they had none. If you´re asking me to suggest a better system, I suggest Roman democracy, or even Roman dictatorship, both were more liberal than feudalism.
@amaqula
Rome and Greece gave us the blue-print to centralized power, standing armies (both closely related), law, science, political thought, political rights, infrastructure, architecture, and democracy etc etc. All that made the Christian civilization great was the reassessment of antiquity, the change from scholasticism to humanism. In other words, the Renaissance.
@Kurtlane Islam is a complete system to govern humanity. You cannot pick half a verse and then say this is Islam. All verses must be examined by many criteria.
What event caused the verse to be revealed (the why), People being address (the who), what time was it revealed in the life of the Prophet (saws) (when). Other verses and hadith that further explain how to deal with "the why".
Its not black and white. There are options for everything. Challenge - I can eat pork, please tell me why?
the problem with Steyn is that he says the liberal progressives think it's "okay" for the West to "fall" to Islam... NOBODY WANTS THAT. The more progressive and liberal you get the more likely you are to be an atheist, thus making you against any religion. I'm very progressive, and an atheist, the LAST thing I want is for Islam to dominate my society... However, there is no reason that Muslims cannot live individually within democracies, the problem is with Islam, not with Muslims
@Kurtlane I hide from nothing. You are the one on RUclips anonymous and hidden.
My face is out there for all to see standing up for what I believe and what I know to be the truth. My only purpose is to tell others what Islam is, but mostly to remind other Muslims about the mistakes we make. Islamic Teachings 101. But you would no the purpose if you understood your Muslim neighbors. You care not to. Thats to bad because we are not going anywhere.
@Kurtlane As in ayat 2:216, it is in a time of war and is specific to those that do not have a treaty with the Muslims see verse 9:4. And verse 9:6 - If one amongst the Pagans ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure. That is because they are men without knowledge.
@mitchnesbitt He said western pluralist society. The west world is hardly just white. He used western to as a substitute for freedom.
@MultiUniv3rsal
Definitely agree with you man!
@Kurtlane If this is towards me, again you know nothing about me and how I feel. You think you know me because of some posts on RUclips.
I have no interest in hurting anyone but will defend my life and my family just like anyone else in the world would do.
@VaragianPrince If by "freedom" you are referring to a Muslim dictatorship, than you are correct.
The "economy" of Europe will never again be the same. China has come to her own true level of high achievement and the colonies of Europe are free, with former colonial subjects dominating the nations of Europe. And those new immigrants are not trying to be British or French, but rather prefer to remain Islamic. And things are not bad in Germany, but people do love to complain, don't they? Europe is committing suicide.
