I served aboard the USS Vulcan AR-5, the first coed ship in the Navy from January 1982 to June 1984. Me thinks I would have opted to stay onboard longer had the crew looked like this. And, yes, there were some exceptionally beautiful women onboard, my Division Officer included.

Hey there. Dad was XO sometime around then, probably closer to 1980. What year was it the local media in Norfolk and VA Beach went nutso about the hull crack thing? A couple names I remember from the time, there was a Navigator whose given name was Debbie and she was a bit short so the woodshop made a step stool to give her more reach on the chart table, she was also a pretty good shot with machineguns and 20mm, according to stories. Also remember name of an enlisted gal whose surname was Dunn. We had several dinners aboard with Dad. The scents of cooking grease, paint thinner, and fuel oil, and the fabric covers over the wardroom table chairs, are my main memories of the, as we called them, "World War Two leftovers" Dad was on, typically FRAM'ed Sumner and Gearing DDs.
