    Title says it all. A progressive full range warm up for mezzo soprano range singers. Starts easy enough with some gentle descending scales, quickly moves on to smooth and somewhat faster arpeggio/scale combos. Finishes up with some lip trill, range development exercises and pure vowel exercises in the upper register.
    Enjoy!

      @@xseaangelx I do! I'm much better now with female songs than I used to be, however still feel the most at home when I sing songs originally sung by men, especially tenors. And about female songs, it is still hard for me to hit over the certain point of where soprano range is. I guess either I need more practice or this is just over my range, as I am definitely not a soprano. ;)

    My range is from a C3 to an E5 and this really helped. Since the 6th grade when I first joined choir he told me I was an Alto and obviously since then my voice has grown and then I have a new teacher this year, I'm in eighth grade and she told me I'm an mezzo soprano and he kept me so Alto for the past two years to keep my voice from being damaged when he should have allowed it to grow. Now I'm a mezzo soprano.

    ..Ok now I'm confused, since I found some of the tones in this video easier to practice for some reason..can you explain please how to find out what type of voice one has?.. thank you!☺

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  7 лет назад +12

      Let me see if I can help here.
      First off, there is a lot of overlap in the vocal fachs (vocal ranges) so finding the alto and mezzo videos useful is not uncommon. In music terms, the typical ranges are only offset by a major second on the bottom and minor third on the top (in the thyroarytenoid dominant singing voice ranges - chest voice.)
      If you don't know what those intervals represent, it's not a lot of difference. So it's easy to find both alto and mezzo videos useful.
      Finding one's fach depends on two main elements. Overall range is one, but more important is the location of the secondo passaggio. That register event is the defining factor in finding our fach.
      In the meantime, keep using the mezzo videos, or, if you have some alto videos that you really like, just stop singing when it gets so low that you begin to change the sound of your voice to accommodate the pitches. Jump back in when it goes higher again.
      I hope that helps!
      Best,
      Jeff

    Thank you, as always, Jeff, for that Mezzo Soprano warm up. I feel like I'm howling when doing the ''u'' at the end! You're different videos help me discover how to use different muscles in my mouth and throat to reach notes 'physically''. (If that make sense)

  • @AngelShadowsongWarren

    After the Tenor Ranges, I crossed the Mezzo as I feel the Alto is nothing much different to Tenor. I crossed the Mezzo to Train the Countenor Range part of my voice. This exercise felt like it crossed my passagio 2 times. One in the low passagio and one in the high passagio. The click mechanism in this range is highly reduced compare to my resonant Tenor passagio.
    The timber is soft but not airy. Almost like a girl Alto but somehow bright unlike the usual dark timbre sound color they have.
    Im a bit explorative Sir Jeff. The extended range Tenor excercise made this Mezzo Exercise a bit Easy for me. Ive explored a lighter resonance sound in my range.

    How can i sing hight notes (ex: F4 ) . I'm mezzo, i think :)

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  6 лет назад +10

      This is a little confusing as F4 for a mezzo is right in the middle of your thyroarytenoid dominant singing voice range (chest voice). In other words, not high at all. If you mean F5, well that is just above your secondo passaggio, and that would be tricky indeed. Check this out:

    Thanks, this is fantastic! I just want to point out that it is slightly confusing if you give the example in a different tone and then proceed with the first exercise on another tone :) I don't know if others also have difficulties with that, or if it's just me haha

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  6 лет назад +2

      Thank you for that! Thank you for watching too!
      Would it be better if I demonstrated an octave lower rather than in a different key?
      The reason I often demonstrate things in different keys is so that the actual usage of my voice is the same. Ie., if it's an exercise that's going over the mezzo secondo passaggio, I'll demonstrate it at my secondo passaggio.
      Best,

      Stop singing if it gets too high and you're not familiar with registration event technique. Otherwise, there is a lot of overlap between the alto and mezzo tessituras.

    I really enjoyed this one!
    Accidental tip:
    I was running short of time, so took my notebook to the bathroom while I showered to warm up in the shower.
    It really helps from paralysis by analysis for beginners like me, since I also had to soap up and do all that stuff, so I was relaxed singing. And, the bathroom always resonates best, so it was so fun!
    Oh it also made me make sure I'm in the shower for 15 minutes max. I guess if this is the easy one for me, and no need to force anything, then I might have decided - mezzo is probably the right range for me :)

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  4 года назад +2

      Really great observation! Distracting yourself can often result in unexpected progress. There are, as it happens, entire aspects of vocal technique that are more about distracting the singer in order to get them to do something with their voice that they might not normally do.
      Additionally, when we're distracted, we sometimes don't consciously control our voices as much. This is particularly prevalent in early registration event practice.
      Great work! Keep it up and thanks for sharing your experience here!
      Best!
      Jeff

    • @DorotaGabal
      @DorotaGabal 4 года назад

      @@JeffRolka Thank you for the feedback, it's much valued. For me some distraction can be good, because I get so focused on doing well that I cram up sometimes. It's easy to get frustrated with self, and with singing, it's rarely beneficial to force it. I've also noticed with singing now something I've noticed with other skill acquisition. As a complete rookie, it's easy to make progress fast, but there comes a time, when I start thinking about how I do things in order to improve on them, and suddenly I can't do what I could already do, it seems 'lost'. It's extremely frustrating, but seems to be a mental process and I get over it, if I persevere, often with a huge leap forward. So getting myself distracted from overanalysing myself has been helpful.
      Thank you for the warmups, I do one every day. Sometimes I try the soprano too, as people don't seem to agree on what my voice type is in the first place.

    • @JeffRolka

      Break a leg! Each of the various videos (ie., Soprano, Mezzo, Alto, Tenor, Baritone) covers the tessitura of the various subsets of those videos. So if you're more of a Soubrette, then just drop out when it gets too high and get back in as it descends or starts over. I'd love to be able to do a video for each subset of each fach, but that would be impractical in the extreme.

    So apparently alto isn't a voice type, I learned recently. Which means I'm either contralto or mezzo soprano. I know I'm not contralto. But I can't properly reach the higher notes mezzos can either, and I can go lower than mezzos apparently feel comfortable going. Would I still classify as mezzo soprano do you think? And how would you suggest I work on those higher notes? Is it enough to follow along these daily warm up videos for mezzos?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  5 лет назад +1

      Follow along with the videos that offer you the greatest amount of singing time while remaining in the comfortable areas of your range the most. From there begin to work outwards, higher and lower, and incorporate those techniques.
      I wouldn't rush to do that, however. Working in the extremities of one's range is mostly just frustrating and inconsistent until your vowel alignment and airflow are well established.
      Great question!

      Jeff

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  8 лет назад +4

      Next time you're practicing, try one of the exercises that transitions from the 'ay' vowel to 'ah.' Try, while you're singing, to notice the lift at the rear of your tongue. It will descend somewhat when making the transition. Try to resist the lowering of the tongue, keeping it slightly elevated through the transition between vowels.
      When 'ah' won't focus it is regularly that the rear of the tongue has descended too far to keep the height of the vowel.
      Let me know how it goes!

    Hello, I'm a little confused about the height on which I should sing the notes. When you sing it, it seems lower than the piano. For example, you would sing A3 when the piano does A4. So when I sing at the same height as you, I feel too comfortable. And when I sing at the height of the piano, it seems too high for my range. I'm mezzo. Something wrong with me or is it normal ?

    Also adding H sound if your voice sounds like what?
    And finally, when using lips can you do it for all of the different soinds or just the first one.
    My voice got tired half way through, does that mean I should stop or push through. Its the first warm up in a long time.
    Thank you
