  • I previously only thought there werre three versions of this. The Nov81 version without the S meter adjustment - the later one with an adjustment on the back of the meter...and the later version with the S meter adjustment on the main board where low power would be on a maxcom 4E version of the board. However, after 40 years...I find a different again version with an S meter adjustment on the channel selector board!
At the point of recording this, the S-meter hadn't been calibrated.
Our continued thanks to Thunderpole for kindly supplying the T3000 radio we use in the test vehicle at no cost to us. This is the sole reason for the 'paid promotion' flag on this video.

Unfortunately most modern CB radios 'dipthong' upon TX whilst the VCO locks. Before CB's were CPU controlled, they drew less current & locked immediately. That's 'progress' we're told. At least the Thunderpole T3000 he is using doesn't take several seconds to lock in cold weather like the Midland 78 we were using before...I bought three thinking the first one was faulty. Nope.

Conversion from AM FCC (26.965 to 27.405Mhz) to UK FM (27.60125 to 27.99125Mhz), would be illegal. USA CB radios may not be imported into the UK & will be confiscated at customs....and the importer prosecuted.
The interference generated by FCC AM CB radios is something like twelve times that permitted for UK sets.
If you look at the videos I've done on the (UK) Midland 2001, 3001 & 4001; they all use the same board. Conversely, the American AM version also use the same, but totally different board across the three models for the USA market.
Ocassionally I end up with illegally imported American sets to break up for parts. Next time I do a Midland 2001/3001/4001, I'll bring out a scrap American market set & show & explain the differences side by side.
Thank you for your interest & input

@@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 Not sure TWELVE times the harmonics is accurate, but even if it is they are clearly good enough for the FCC and their regulations, and if they caused so much havoc on the airwaves surely the FCC would have insisted on better filtering? Would be interesting to see the spectral variations on a test bed environment like for like.

UK CB radios are totally differnt to USA CB radios & their importation to either country from the other is illegal. Your system in the use uses AM & the 40 channels are from 26.965Mhz to 27.405Mhz. In the UK, the system is FM only & covers the 40 channels from 27.60125Mhz to 27.99125Mhz (4W).
So, when you see me servicing a CB set here in the UK that could look outwardly identical to models available in your country, the innards are totally different.
I'm an electronics engineer specialising in 2-way radio; mainly for business. However, I'll also happy to service UK FM CB radios as well as you see on the channel.

I Thought So FCC Rules Apply between Midland USA Market an UK Market . has you Stated .. I Must say Midland are Very Good CB Radios . The Two I have . Even after 40 Years a still work when I purchase them in 1980's . Question are CB Radio's Still ( Popular ) in
the U.K. even today ? Not has Popular in U.S. since the 1990's when I stopped using mine my two midland's. I believe just the Semi-Trucks Transport's still use them driving across American Highways . Only old semi-truck drivers know how , they work , to install a
usage a slag language . But very Quiet on CB Traffic Channel 19 Nowadays in U.S... The Last Snow Storm was January 2019 Northern
Va. just South Washington D.C. Traffic Back-Up on Rt.95 North from many Miles almost 3 Feet of Snow on Highway. Just plain Struck .
Simi-Trucks doing okay, Not Commuters after 24 Hours , ran out of Gas , A Cell Phones Died , and Freezing Cold. On FM Radio find a
Semi-Truck ask Driver to get-in to stay Warm. Long Story Short Where and CB Radio when you Really need One . Tells you What happening Around You on Highway in a Heavy Snow Storm .I was struck in one once 7 Hours in my 4 wheel drive . I could move , but I didn't have my Midland CB or K40 Antenna that time . Won't make that mistake again .. Well Mate in U.K. , Thank you for Reply ..

Yes, totally different systems between the UK & USA CB systems. Much like television; the USA has 525 lines & NTSC colour, wheras the UK has 625 lines & PAL colour.
In big towns or cities, CB is full of music players, bucket mouths & people who sit on 19 with illegal high power. It works if you sit on a particular channel like I do. People who know that can select that channel & give you a call.
CB can be useful in the car as there azre lorry drivers out there....but like me...they'll mainly agree on a particular channel because of the wallies on 19.
Have a look at some of my roadtrip videos = we always put the CB on in the car.
All the best from the UK,
      Richard, G0OJF

In Early 1980's K40 came out with a New Mount called ( K40 M-40 Black Magnet Mount )
for both Original K40 Trunk Mount and Fiber-Glass Mount also.
So Don't have to use the Lip-Mount Anymore . Keep it
Stored away in a Car Trunk or SUV Hatch. Mount it on Trunk or Roof
of SUV , that moment can't get Stolen Either when not in use.
I have used Both on my Two K40 Antennas since 1980's . Plus a great Ground-Plane from Car Body..
Has I Remember correctly K40 Owned
35% of Antenna back in the 1980's thru 1990's. The K40 Original
Antenna is still being Made Today . Owned by a Company called
Road-Pro in Pa. Purchase the Rights in 2005 .. They are a Fleet
Semi-Truck Service Brand Company .. I Must Say K40 did make
Very Good Products when CB Radios were Popular Years Ago..
So Long for Now ..... Yank...
If Came to U.K. Talked on CB Mic. Using American CB Snag Language !
The British CB Radio Guys , Nuts , wouldn't know what to Think ! Sent him Back Across the Pond !

Question: How Much Difference is Circuitry And Components How
CB Radios Were Produced from 1980's compared to 2000
MFG CB Radios Bands today..? What Brand of CB Antennas do
people use in the U.K. today ? Is Old K40 Antennas still being use
in the U.K Now ? I Know that K40 did Export CB Antennas back in
the 1980's ,from the U.K. CB Radio Magazine . Has K40 Produce
the Original K40 57 1/4 Stainless Rod Antenna , coil adapter and
capacitor inside the base connected to Cable for lower SWR Tuning.
The K40 Fiberglass Antenna is the Hardest One to Find Nowadays .
They were 48" or 54" in length and SWR Tunable Sleeves .
The Top 3 Prong base is a Red-Top .The Original K40 Top was Black.
The Only K40 Ad I have seen was a U.K.1980's CB Radio
Magazine . I do own Both K40 Antennas from the 1980's today .
They both work even with 1.1 SWR Both tuned today for my Two
Midland CB Radios .. In my Past I did work in aircraft Avionics Field
and Spacecraft also in the 1980's to the late 1990's . One of the
Engr. was a Ham-Radio Nut ,I worked for , used to Build Ham-Radio
Equipment for him . I wish he Taught me how to Tune CB Radios , to Bad.. I Wished,
I Learned for fun of It and Knowledge and Each Component's how each Works within Circuitry !
Well Good U.K. Friend, have a Nice Day..

I can't say the K40 aerial was much of a thing here. They were very expensive & back in 1981 when UK CB radio was introduced by the UK government (27.60125Mhz to 27.99125Mhz, FM 4W), a K40 cost £39.99. I bought one & had it stolen a few months later. It did perform well & I reckon the secret of it's good performance was the fact it came with very high quality coaxial cable.
The UK 'standard' CB aerial is the Les Wallen Modulator. The aerial we use on the test vehicles here is a cheap copy of the Modulator. This is done to prove that excellent perfomance can be had with cheaper products as long as very high quality cable is used. All the aerials we use on vehicles are drilled-in body mounts; this makes a massive difference to range.
Bear in mind our main 2-way radio acivity is business radio (America calls business radio LMR), so extreme reliability & performance is paramount....I ensure I treat CB radio the same way & would never use gimmicky products such as ones with words like 'magic' in their title!
To work on 2-way radio transmitters (including CB) in the UK, requires you to be licenced to at least amateur radio intermediate class, or military or civillian equivalent.

Question on my Second Midland is Mini Midland 77/145 model. Real Small Unit.. The Green LED Digital Channel Display Fades Out to
Almost Dark Visional to Read During Use Once , Do Know the Reason Why That Happens Fades Out Display Channel Selector Indicator ? I Use a K40 Speech Processor & Microphone , I call
and Gen. 1 That interfaces with the 4 / Pin Midland Unit Male
    Connector with 4/pin K40 Female OD/Green Pin-Outs .
There's no Problem with using K40 Speech Processor & Microphone
on 40 Channel Midland CB Radios .. I own Two First Gen. 1 Second
Gen 2 on Both Midland CB Radios .. for Years Now. The Gen 1,
    K40 401 Model the first K40 Made in 1982 ..
The Speech Processor is Built-Into the Microphone . The Gen 2 Is Not Built into Microphone ,
But the K40 -7 and K40-8 Brand CB Radios .
The main Difference in Two Versions
I Plugged the Mini-Midland in my car last weekend for 14 Hours , without connecting the K40 Antenna Cable , just Power the CB radio .
I Know Not to Key the Microphone if Power On. After 14 Hours the LED Display stayed the Same , Nothing Happened .Or .Faded ..
If You know of any Knowledge be Helpful.. Thank You..

The Midland 77-145 is an AM radio & not available nor legal to use in the UK.
As I'm in the UK servicing UK FM radios it's not possible for me to have ever seen one.
However, Midland small sets of this era that DID appear on the UK market, such as the 77-104UK suffer frrom dry joints. I would think that's the snag.
