I've seen foam pads cause problems in various equipment. Not just absorbing moisture but they degrade and go conductive. Causing audio amps to oscillate and various odd RF faults (like this). You can also get silicone-like anti-shake "goo" that they coat PCB components with and does something similar, especially the black stuff, which is a pain to remove. Definitely once bitten, twice shy.
