"My hair is a bird; your argument is invalid."
"Ha, my hair is also a bird; your argument is more invalid."
Gradius FLIP the bird.
"Stalemate."
Does it say that in the episode?
LEOxuan no
🤣
_Enlightenment_ contains one of the best bits of dialogue in the show's history;
"You are a time lord. A lord of time, Are there lords in such a small domain?"
"and where do you function?"
"Eternity. The endless wastes of eternity"
The Eternals are a brilliant conception.
"You look ridiculous wearing a pigeon on your head."
"That's rich coming from someone wearing a burnt chicken on his."
U make me Laugh
They really need to bring the Guardians back. Make it a season-long arc, have them test the Doctor to see if his actions guide the course of the universe more towards Order or Chaos.
James Bevan Agreed
RTD was good at season long arcs - Torchwood, Saxon etc.
Will Power He left subtle hints each episode some bigger than others. And by the time the finale came around the audience was ready and built up for it. In contrast, I think Moffat just goes too far with his season finales and makes every episode about them which is too much in my opinion.
I agree need to bring back massively 🚜🚜🚜🚜
@@nickmullerITFC78 It is heading in that direction by the looks of it.
Technically speaking, the Guardians are more powerful than the Time Lords themselves. They exist outside the boundaries of time and space and have abilities to reshape and change events if need be........
It would be very interesting to see if they are reincorporated back into the show again.......
And if the Doctor does indeed find Gallifrey, then they could meet (Time Lords and the Guardians), and we would then see what happens between the two.
It's Obvious.
The two meeting?
the black guardian did swear to return after his second defeat, and he has the freedom to return any time
If the Master doesn't return in the current Season (which there's a 90% chance he won't), it would be intresting to see if the Black Guardian does, though like the Master, I doubt it.
What an amazing scene from my favourite story of my favourite Doctor. I was only a teenager but the metaphysics got to me here. This clip ends... SPOILERS... before the crucial moment. Teagan is having kittens, the Doctor is zen passive and trusts Turlough to make the right choice. And when he does, and she demands "You trust him because he gave up enlightenment for you?!" He calmly tells her she's missing the point: "Enlightenment wasn't the diamond; it was the choice." Gold.
It would've been funnier if the birds on their heads were still alive
"*CRAW!!* Death to the humans, *CRAW!!!*"
"It's so stimulating being your hat."
The would be great to do in a parody.
But...what if the birds were the real Gaurdians!? And the bodies were just puppets. This whole scene could have been between the birds...😂
CGI: they look dead, then one preens
So they wear birds on their heads. Ancient religions show people with heads or hats of animal visage as well. In the Doctor Who universe, humans may have seen a Guardian visiting for whatever reason and liked the allusion so much they adopted it.
Yes, cowls with actual animal heads or with the animals likeness have been worn. But THESE particular ones look at least somewhat ridiculous. But kudos to the wardrobe people on the show for trying something different.
1:52 - See, Tegan can be tactful when the need calls for it. She managed to just say "I can't." instead of "I can't. Not that I'd do anything even if I could, because you're just really, REALLY creepy."
Mr Marriner seemed to have genuine feelings for Tegan.
Valentine Dyall played the part magnificently! As did Cyril Luckham.
Agui007 Dyall was going to be the doctor
the guardians could return in the future, its not impossible but both dyall & luckham are not with us in 2017, and it would be a unbelivable story too explain the recent time war...
"Enlightenment was the CHOICE."
Turlough has some frightening eyebrows in that closeup.
R.I.P. Keith Barron (8 August 1934 - November 2017).
2:57 I would just have the TARDIS.
lol
This episode is one of my favourites. It speaks to the inherent fear in all of us, that we may exist in a wasteland of eternity. Yes we are mortal, but this episode lays bare that the very consciousness we have is floating, without absoluteness or reference, in a void of eternal nothing. When dancing delicately between the extremes of death and immortality, between existence and nothing, between meaning and irrelevance, we all know at the bottom of our hearts that we are a combination of all - it both comforts and frightens us.
The Black Guardian has an AWESOME voice!
Valentine Dyall, one of the best voice actors of all time
Ah...the Black and White Guardians! I always liked those guys.
The Guardians would be great characters to bring back for the new series.
Before Master Xehanort and Master Eraqus there was the Black and White Guardians as the embodiments of dark and light.
What I love about the classics were they were host to very distinguished actors.
Ah, the classic look of bright light on videotape.
1:24 That musical piece however brief feels so alien to the Classic Series.
It's so ominous yet at the same time feels as if it'd be more at home in a Horror movie from the 2000s.
Wonder where they are now? I know the current Doctor mentioned Enlightenment in the Sherwood Forest episodes (like the thought they might be around) so perhaps they're still around somewhere.
You can find them by meditating! ☯😉
@@VJFranzK Good to know.
Instead of bird heads (or are those bird hats?), the two guardians would've looked better the way we first initially saw the White Guardian in part 1 of "The Ribos Operation" (at the start of the Key to Time stories), where he appeared a little like an old fashioned Southern plantation owner. More regal and dignified.
You mean where he appears as Colonel Sanders just without the fried chicken spiel.
Came here right after tonight's episode mentioned the Guardians.
Same and the toy maker
Which episode was that?
@@rudenotginger123 Can You Hear Me?
"I leave the lies and deception to you!" genteel manners, yet savage burn. No Doctor was ever quite like Peter Davison's.
I loved this one when it first aired ... very eerie and atmospheric.
an intriguing end to the trilogy involving the two Guardians and the Eternals of the Whoverse
Basically Christmas with the family
I want more episodes of Doctors 5 6 and 7.
The white guardian hinted at the next encounter. However, we are still waiting for it.
maybe it already happened. maybe in the guardians timeline, Enlightenment happened first and the Key to Time season happened last.
i still think enlightenment should have been a 6 parter, as it was the 20th season and since it was bringing back the classic monsters at the time, they could have had a 6 parter like the previous doctors, as i thought enlightenment was rushed towards the end just to cram it into a 4 parter, whereas it could have easily been spread out and look better if it was 6, but its still a great episode all the same.
That's how I felt about Caves of Androzani. I don't recall feeling Enlightenment was rushed.
The original final story of season 20 was Resurrection of the Daleks but it was cancelled at the last moment due to a strike at the BBC, hence the King's Demons replaced it .
funny thing, the Dark Guardian always said he would return to exact his revenge
Wait a minute The Doctor and Turlough totally killed the Wrack ,I think was her name, and her first mate overboard
10th Doctor: damn I give up
I still have to wait two days here in Australia
two epic actors at the top of their game!!! The Guardians NEED to come back. Who is so rich with characters. Bring them all back, and make the series great again
you're right, they're very good symbols, and i do think it's kind of cool the way their hair is made of feathers. It's just an odd costume idea, one you really wouldn't see today unless it's on Lady Gaga's head. Also, i couldn't help but focus on it cause i actually didn't catch it in the first clip i saw of them. i was watching this, fairly enjoying it, and then towards the end i realized: "oh wow, those are birds on their heads!" :)
They should do something with that: The Doctor's the founder of Jamestown, perhaps?
Dark can exist without light just fine, look at the universe, plenty of it.
Without light dark is undefined. Without darkness light is undefined. Without the other, each exists without point of reference and become meaningless.
there is still light in space.
Its so stimulating being your hat!
I'm going to try and resist the temptation and wait till it goes on TV. Now that will be a challenge.
The leaf was a beautiful symbol! Clara isn't literally a leaf, but that leaf is responsible for her parents meeting and thus her existence (romance tends to focus on the little things. couple songs would be rubbish too if they didn't) The theme park wasn't for Cybermen, they hid there because they needed children's minds or whatever to upgrade, and where else would you find the most children? And what do you mean "Willy Wonka" ? :/
One of my favourite stories, and I also think it's one of the 5th Doctor's best as well. One of the things that makes it so great is the moral choice that Turlough has to make.
You can have your enlightenment. I'll take Tegan!
Who would play the White and Black guardians in the New Series? I would choose Antony Hopkins as the White Guardian and Ralph Fieness as the Black Guardian
Its high time the black and white guardians returned. Let Jodie Whittaker deal with them.
...they both have birds on their head... O.o that's all i noticed in this scene
Plot twist: the Black Guardian is The Trickster.
Where were these guys during the Time War?
Unknown, but its said somewhere's in written canon material available outside the show, that they left our galaxy apparently during the Time War! Otherwise the revived series would've eventually used them onscreen by now? (shrugs)
“during the Time War”? There is no “during”, the Time War is ongoing at every instance of time (and also is yet to happen and also has happened, it doesn’t make sense, waste of time trying to make it all fit) but regardless, these guys are beyond time. Presumably during this very scene they could see the Time War going on, it’s conclusion and aftermath
Probably didn't care about the time war, they're above that. Remember these guys treat eternals as mere insects.
I was waiting for the conclusion I seen this episode
Yeah, that's what everybody should think... But thanks to the internet, I know the complete story... You just have to digg deep enough.
River Song won't be REALLY in this episode: The spoiler says she is, but since the "Great Intelligence" comes back, and River wears the stuff from the library in the trailer, I think she is a spoonhead with all the data from the library.
Did anybody else notice that almost every video uploaded lately by the official DW channel has something to do with the Guardians? Maybe they are trying to give us a hint about something... Just saying ;)
Odd that the White Guardian didn't go see the Doctor right after he had split the Key to Time into 6 pieces anew because the White Guardian was impersonated by the Black Guardian to give him the key even after mentioning that one of the pieces was a human being, a woman, following the pieces getting assembled and not knowing if the balance of the Universe did get restored or not.
The white guardian was right when he warned the dr to be viligant that the black guardian will try again
When he said light cant existed without dark its like master cant existed without the doctor 🚜🚜🚜
"Road Roller Da!"
I'd be happy if it was "Space Gandalf"
Spoilers...he's returning.
Source?
It's a Cristopher Lee style performance!
chuck norris and bruce lee seem fitting names
Funny how many people are talking about things not remotely related to this clip.
I wonder if we'll ever see the light and dark guardians again. I kind of hope so.
I don't know how I'll react if it turns out that the Doctor's real name is indeed John Smith....
He originated the earth name by using it so many times in history? ; - ) rationalization...
*Doctor Who* (Season 20 [1983])
*_Enlightenment_** (Serial 5)*
Doctor Who [The Fifth Doctor] (Peter Davidson)
Tegan Jovanka (Janet Fielding)
Vislor Turlough (Mark Strickson)
Black Guardian (Valentine Dyall)
White Guardian (Cyril Luckham)
Is it just me who the birds are creeping out?
There is no way they're gonna say his name. The episode will be about his name, but won't actually reveal it.
It's strange that it took the Black Guardian a long time to find the Doctor and then come face to face with him in his 5th incarnation after he accidentally destroyed a machine he attached to the TARDIS to confuse the Black Guardian of his movements.
The black guardian is like a less chill Michael Portillo...
You haven't seen an older MIchael P. waxing lyrical about trains on BBC 4. Not nearly so stuffy once he gave politics the heave-ho.
Gallifreyan, presumably. :3
The pacing of the lines are so weird in this episode.
We will never find out ;) If they did tell us - it would 100% be a let down, because what word in any language could properly represent the epicness that is the doctor?
In lieu of just watching The Legend of Ruby Sunday, I strongly suspect that Russell T. Davies will reintroduce the Guardians. I'm not so sure of the Eternals though. If he does, I can hold off on seeing Marriner again. A possessive stalker, that works on a cosmic scale is truly frightening.
Work with Adam in Torchwood.
Got birds on their heads but don't call them bird heads
i think maybe someone we know will find out his name but us the viewers won't.
Black Guardian: Turlough, you are a god among insects...Never forget it!
The other bird, Tegan, is the nicest one.
Tegan was so beautiful that she made an Eternal with no concept of romance fall in love with her. Marriner should have said that he would become ephemeral and stay with Tegan.
Well yes the golden ticket was a gimmick, but they weren't exactly introduced to a chocolate. the biggest theme park in the world is abandoned war-torn and filled with soldiers. Not the best set-up, but a set-up at that. the leaf represents the the circumstances that allowed her parents to meet, it's a sweet symbol okay? I may be more of a fan of the new series than old, but at least im not bashing your birdbrains (hah see what i did there? :P) :(
I thought Tegan and Mr Marriner would have made a lovely couple. Marriner seemed to have genuine feelings for Tegan. Surely the White Guardian could have offered him a deal - stay and become ephemeral or return to the void?
The Title of the episode is very unlucky chosen. River only whispers the name of the Doctor, nothing else. And the Great Intelligence needs the name of the Doctor (from River).
This was a cool scene
I suspect the black and white guardian represent not just dark and light but also the dove and the raven.
And if it actually turns out to be just John Smith I'm going to throw a shit fit.
The Episode.
You know what I liked best about Turlough? He *WASN'T* Adric!
Yeah. Me too.
The lesson here is to never mess with a guy who has a bird on his head.
I haven't seen this in years. WHY?!
You were really busy?
And if we by some miracle do,LET IT BE AN AWESOME ONE otherwise you will hear about moffat's demise...just saying
Interestingly enough, not even that, but it's still not over :)
The Doctor has a stalk of celery pined to his jacket
So? The Guardians have dead birds on their heads!
Give him the Doctor!
Janet Fielding is so gorgeous 😍
Someone remind me again why they're wear birds on their heads. Neil Innes wearing a rubber duck on his head was one understandable, but not for cosmic beings like these two. Just asking.
This reminds me of the Book of Job which begins with Satan and God having a couple of drinks together and betting that Satan can/can't turn Job away from God. I may have made up the drinking part.
You should read Robert Heinlein's novel "Job: A Comedy of Justice"
Dark is just the absence of light :P
OMG, Valentine Dyall.
I don't want to know the doctors name..
I am black. And you are white.
I'm bright like the sun, but you are night.
that and it would kind of make the title of the series purposeless and maybe even end the series. :)
I hate when people are incapable of thinking abstract. We will NOT learn the name of the Doctor. I think it may be spoken but we will not hear it because it is unpronounceable to humans.
Really enjoy This story
That's a pretty plot device.
