I just realised; Seven seems completely unaware he has regenerated yet. This must have been how Six would have acted if he hadn't been fighting the Lamprey before the Rani got him.
@Colin forever maybe. It's never been definitively stated what caused 6 to regenerate. There's a theory it was trauma from the turbulance, and a source that said 7 triggered the regeneration internally.
I agree with OP, 7th's performance here strongly echoes the 6th, except with an added dose of cartoon humour. So we can already see how the new Doctor will be different.
Matthew Bowles The theory of 7 triggering the regeneration internally is in the big finish audio version of 6’s regeneration. It’s kinda meh to me, a little strange.
Matthew Bowles they explained it on big finish
I thought it was radiation deadly to timelords
The pointing he does when he says "And who are you!?" gets me every time. He just goes from being so composed to flamboyant
"Now, if you were watching this episode for the first time, I'm pretty sure your best estimate of what just occurred was that the Doctor fell over after being shot with glitter by Bigfoot."
Doctor who can be confusing out of context
0:41 "Right that all seems quite clear! Just three small points. Where am I? Who am I? And who are you?"
Probably the some of the best lines ever spoken by any Doctor post regeneration. I mean Time and the Rani is not a great episode but I have to give credit to that line of dialogue.

DR. Dead-ringer “why should you care?”
My contempt started long before my exile
*AND WHAT DO YOU WANT WITH ME?*
My sympathies to both Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy for having to wear that dreadful outfit. They both earned high commendations for that.
With New Who the outfits are consistently good
Colin's outfit suited Sylvester more (even if it needed a bit of adjustment).
The crazy attire complements Seventh's personality, unlike Sixth's.
I think it also helped that the outfit was toned down a bit, with a red tie and waistcoat with patterns that not only matched, but also kind of flowed with the over coat's look better
Still a visual riot, but less so than when Colin wore it; I would agree, regardless, that it fits Sylvester McCoy quite well
@@horaciosi it wasn't really to complement "silliness". Timelords are basically portrayed as a satire on the British upper class, a breed of folk who behave with pretentiousness and pomposity, while acting or dressing in a way that would look ridiculous to anyone else.
Posh people are well known for horrendous, loud colour arrangements (I went to uni at a posh university and bright green or pink/purple trousers were not unusual). I remember one of my friends who worked in psychiatry saying that "eccentric" people were what you were called if you were posh, but you'd just be thought mad if you were anyone else.
Damn, the ragging on Colin never ends lol
Not the best acting or writing that could've been done, but Sylvester McCoy became an iconic Doctor, especially in the Big Finish series.
The acting is passable - the writing and atmosphere, not so much. That awful multicoloured costume, falling around the studio, big foot with a glitter-gun - it doesn't get more pantomime than that, and it's not the actors fault.
RopeDrink Dude that was Colin’s costume. Of course he has to wear it; he just regenerated.
I really love the music and special effects in Time and the Rani, and I actually hold it as having Sylvester’s best performance in his run.
But yeah the writing is pretty bad. Not as bad as some of his other stories like Greatest Show in the Galaxy, but not that good either.
lol fans are so clueless. Big Finish? Big Finish is fan-wank! Only fans would be delusional enough to prefer fan-fiction over the real McCoy.
@@FreeTheDonbas might want to throw that bait out. It's become almost nearly as rotten as your attitude.
+Jon Smith Big Finish (more like 'lacklustre finish' after a bout of fan-wanking) appeals exclusively to fans. Regular people would never listen to that crap. The actual show is made to appeal to a broader audience. Talk about attitude, fans just slag off DW all day long, while praising fan-fiction. I'm sick of it.
1:49
This is why I like McCoy's acting in a nutshell. Watch how he speaks 0.0
The one thing I really love about this scene is the Doctor's reaction to the Tetrap walking in. He instantly snaps from being over the top, zaney and scatter brained and instantly becomes totally serious, giving a really 'Doctor-y' look.
The entire story in 3 words: 0:53.
Morbius Fitzgerald totally. I remember watching it back in 1987, didn't think much of it then.
xD
I need her to come back and get screen time with Missy because the Master has always annoyed the Rani so much but Missy would annoy her so much more than any previous Master and it would be glorious
+Aimee L I was one of those people hoping that Missy would turn out to be the Rani before her identity was revealed. The entire Heaven-computer thing seemed right in line with the Rani's sort of amoral-screwing-around-with-others-without-caring experiments.
+*Pentarax*
You know...
We never actually SAW The Master regenerate into Missy. And, I mean perish the thought, but Missy just MIGHT have LIED about who she really is.
She's nothing like the Rani or the Master. She's more like iris wildethyme
True. Shame it didn't happen before the show went to hell in a handbasket once Chibs the idiot got his hands on it. If they brought the Rani back now with the awful writing it would just end up being an insult to the character. And they've already destroyed better ones. RIP Doctor who 1963-2017
I like you
R.I.P. Kate O'Mara.
She played a brilliant evil Time Lady.
A class act
Rani was a female Time Lord before it was cool.
You forgot about Romana.
I thought Missy was going to be the Rani. ;A;
The correct term is Time Lady.
Trashlord Unikitten I don't think anybody has ever had a problem with female Time Lords, to be fair.
TheValeyard92 I think it's just the timing really. Film has always been an industry of social ideals/opinions but recently people have become more sensitive to it. The original Planet of the Apes was super preachy, for example, but it's considered to be a sci-fi classic. If they adapted it true to the original commentary it would be called leftist propaganda.
Unfortunately, it took until Season 25 before the writing became good. McCoy was given some really shoddy stories in 24.
But he's still one of my favourites.
He's got a meaner streak than ANY of the Doctors EVER did (including the latest Doctors). Every Doctor has their dark moments - 7th was literally the embodiment of the Doctor's deviousness.
Remembrance of the Daleks and Curse of Fenric were magnificent. Terrifying stories which both tried new things.
Even that bad writing was better than the best writing of New Who.
Baker McCoy was similar to Hartnell Troughton change imo.
Sylvester McCoy makes a good entrance. I love his overdramatic "And who are you?" scene.
I remember watching this episode brand new in 1987. I feel very old now. ....
Sylvester McCoy is lovely to meet. Nice fellow. The chemistry between him and Sophie Alfred is great. I loved the idea of him being a time Lord of mystery and ace being energetic and curious about
Professor and wicked
I love that first shot of him lying on the console/desk. Very cute. McCoy is my favourite Doctor; he's so clever and so wonderfully absurd.
I wonder how much of McCoy's performance influenced David Tennant. I see a lot of similarities in the first few seconds.
A darker version of the Doctor, hidden under a friendly face?
Tennant, AFAIK, has never mentioned McCoy but he has mentioned Baker, Davidson and Troughton. Primarily Davidson.
@@JeremiahEcks777 Which Baker?? Tom?
McCoy and Colin were badly judged, and deserved more appreciation then they had. Sure there were some episodes that were off, but they have some great stories
Poor Sylvester, if all his episodes had the quality of his last season he could have saved the series.
I must admire the excitement and energy of this story! I still quite like it!
Wow...I didn't know Kate O'Mara died :-( Rest in peace.
Just as Sylvester had got his Doctor just right (More mysterious & dark) they bloody axed it.
I liked Ace as well. She was one tough cookie. Kind of a nice throwback to Leela where a companion had physical toughness and capability as well as attitude.
Always love it when the Doctor and his fellow renegade's school days are mentioned
Rest in Peace Kate O' Mara. :(
“This is idiotic, you’ll injure yourself!” Seems like the actress trying to check he’s alright while staying in character, as the fall didn’t look at all planned
“Who are you!? The Rani! Stay back!”
**Falls Down Stairs**
He's full of regeneration energy.
Why did they bother making the Master a woman, why not just bring back the Rani
Because the Rani is literally "the Master but a woman and also boring"
Chazz Heaton agreed
The Vargouille LIES!
They could have just reinvented her and make her not boring
Then what's the point?
I so wish Missy would have been the Rani.
Well he's got to go sooner or later.
At least he did not make the Dr half human. The UNFORGIVABLE sin. That's you Mr. Segal.
Would a made the character a heck of a lot more enjoyable.
yep
matthewakian2 To each their own, I happen to like that Missy is the Master.
I love the music from 0 to 30 seconds. Is this episode going to be released on DVD soon?
"Oh no! Don't throw glitter at me! Room . . . Spinning. Vision . . . Dimming . . ."
One of the greatest comedies put to screen
1 of the best incarnations of the dr 7 was brilliant
Rani was exiled from Gallifrey
Which means she wasn't in the Time War
Which means she may make a return?
All the renegade's were recalled once the time War came around the Rani would have been forced to return. Not saying she couldn't have found some way of surviving but her being exiled doesn't make her exempt from the time war
@@madeleine5561 but, then again, the last time we saw her (if we're taking that sick children's special into account), she was trapped in a trap of her own making that was intended for all of The Doctor's incarnations.
@@DoctorWhoKage knowing the Rani I'm pretty sure she would have eventually found a way out
The Master was exiled and fought in the war, The Doctor was exiled and fought in the war, The Rani would be no different.
@@martinrobo123 yeah, plus the timelords would be stupid not to take advantage of her insane intelligence. Question her ethics all you like but she was crazy smart.
Just like with Tom Baker and David Tenant, that voice still gives me shivers.
RIP Kate O' Mara
I know it's cuz each Doctor usually wearing their respective costumes when they regenerate, therefore the newly regenerated Doctor starts off wearing their predecessor's costume for continuity. But to me, each Doctor looks kind of weird wearing their predecessor's costume and always feel relieved once they've changed into their own costume.
I wish the Rani coming back in newer Doctor-Who-Episodes.
Did she die?
iirc, she's stuck in a time loop. I doubt the new writers even know about her.
I actually think Sylvester looks really good in this outfit!
Why is this so perfect
Just bring back the Rani in the New Show. Kate O Mara was Great !
Remembrance had a lot going for it (unfortunately, that goofy synth drum music was still in the background). That was one of my favorite McCoy episodes as well. I thought Silver Nemesis started off great, but didn't quite live up to classic villain expectations. Still, it was one I remember above others. McCoy and Ace made a great team even if their era was less than my favorite for sure.
"Quick three questions: where am I, who am I, and who are you? THE RANI!"
I think it's great that Colin got you into the series. I thought he was fantastic too. He just came at a time when the BBC was having major doubts about the series, so it had a lot of problems back then as far as strikes, delays, etc.. I still consider Attack Of The Cybermen a must-see episode that ranks right up there among the series' best. In fact, I personally consider that to be the last truly great episode in the entire series.
I want that coat. (I realise how odd that probably makes me.)
Me too. It's a rocking coat.
Rushy I own it I love it I proposed to my fiance in it^_^
@@goimei you, sir, are a man of culture

I would rock it on any day of the week except Sunday.
Before it was revealed that Michelle Gomez was to play Missy, I was sure based on the mysterious scenes prior to the reveal, that Michelle Gomez was going to play The Rani. She definitely had that whole "Soul of Science" thing going on in those scenes.
after regeneration a timelord's mind is all over the place I think the 7th Doctor was good to recognise the Rani straight away.
It so cool to see how the Doctor despite going through a reboot he still recognize the rani
Once Star Trek TNG premiered Doctor Who could not compete with a sci fi show with state of the art special effects.
Colin Baker's technicolor costume somehow manages to...well...WORK with Sylvester. I was actually disappointed he didn't stay in it for longer than twenty minutes or so.
If The Rani gets brought back in the new series, there's only one actress whom I think would perfect for the role - Liz May Brice.
Yeah, the last series of the Classic Series had 4 of the best episodes ever written in!
I only just noticed that the Seventh Doctor's hair was brown at the beginning, and then it got grey by Season 26.
"The meteor is made entirely out of..."
"What, what? Out of what?"
"Popcorn!"

A "nice nap"? You were risen from the dead!

Good to know.
The last time I was shot with a confetti cannon, I had the same reaction.
"My contempt started long before my banishment"
So she hates her own species and see's others as labrats.
Thats why I like the Rani
Checking both hearts is a nice touch.
They need to bring back The Rani 😍
That hair is so under appreciated,
Make up too just meshed well together
1:11 interesting how this line was added in post and wasn’t said originally in the scene.
I'm just saying it makes more sense that the Rani survived the Time War than either the Doctor or the Master because she never would have fought in it in the first place. Totally amoral villains are just as much fun as totally evil ones.
...same here, Colin Baker is my fave also...just a kid when Peter changed into Colin and Colin had me hooked...so sad when he left...all the Drs are good in their own way though...and like the new Dr also..."you killed Peri"....loved that line....
Excellent! They need to bring back the Rani in the new series.
The Seventh Doctor's Kryptonite: A Glitter Bomb. 😂
That's a fine looking woman.
Very doctorish scene
Good grief no, not at all
@@Grizzly01 good grief yes, yes at all
It seems like a parody of the show, not a real episode.
Andrew Falconer a classic
Andrew Falconer Yeah, the hammy overacting and clunky direction does take quite a lot of getting used to.
@@Grizzly01 I think for Time and Rani and Delta and the Bannermen the pantomime is fun, it is a stark contrast to the Nu Who Chris Chibnall dishes out which can't be described as enjoyable. These early Sylvester Mccoy serials are enjoyable for their charm and colour as opposed to the overly visual effect based indoctrination session we have today!
@@bobbygolden8058 Hmmm. Your opinion, obvs. I know which I prefer to watch.
@@Grizzly01 Season 25 isn't great but is enjoyable in it's 1980s charm. Ghostlight is very Moffat and confusing but soo good. And "The Curse of Fenric" is debatably one of the all-time best Doctor Who episodes. Remembrance of the Daleks is imo better than Journey's End and could beat it any day in story complexity and enjoyment. He was such an under-rated Doctor and his series was well ahead of it's time and still looks exceptional today. If you haven't already and are fed up of Chibnall and can't stand the hiatus, get on Dailymotion and all the 7th Doctor great escapades can be seen there! Enjoy!
Lucky Seven was one of my favorite Doctors.
i like that episode it is my fave 7th doctor episode
Well, most fans hate it, but I think it is quite good.
He keeps falling, this is one clumsy doctor! XD
I think Skaro was in "Asylum of the Daleks" by way of time travel. Also I love the Doctor's way of escaping at 0:50.
Man the seventh doctor is kinda underrated. If ya ignore the potential rubbish that almost made it into cannon, “cartnels master plan” the seventh Doctor is just like a incarnation of the mad man with a box
Look at how cute and little Sylvester McCoy is in Six's coat!
Hahaha... Nice Music. This is awesome, even if the special effects are antique.
Hehe, for once he ´gets through his regeneration without too much trouble, but the Rani is already ready to mess with his poor little head.
The Rani's theme kind of sounds like the 1987 theme.
This scene was hilarious😂
I wouldn't mind waking up in Rani's lab, if you know what I mean
Uh.....ok
@Mr_Vastatorem You are VERY odd
THE DOOR SOUND EFFECT REMIND YOU OF ANYTHING?!??!?
2:29 Song is awesome!!! Anyone find a extended version?
Well, the Master was possibly the best known villain of who besides the Daleks or Cybermen. Rassilon is an important character in Who backstory, and plus they needed a leader for the time lords. The Rani isn't a particularly memorable time lord; plus, she's not evil and doesn't crave power, just knowledge.
I Believe This Was A Video Clip From The Episode Of "Doctor Who" On September 7, 1987.
I'd probably go with "Genesis of the Daleks" as a first Classic episode for a "Not-We." It's not my #1 favorite, but it's still great, and has the bonus of being very accessible.
That incidental is so good and I love Sylvester’s first performance.
94830 086436 Yeah the biggest writing issue I remember having with it was the minion creatures not really getting any characterization. Otherwise, it was fine. A lot better than many of Sylvester’s later stories like Battlefield and Curse of Fenric. (God that was awful.)
OwO what's this??? You don't like Curse of Fenric?
Liam Cahill I don’t understand how it’s so popular. It’s one of the worst imaginable. Almost as bad as nuwho standards 😏
OK, I accidentally deleted my comment, so I'm now reposting it:
I agree that Keff's scores were top-notch, and McCoy did a very good job with the generic "lol I'm wacky" Doctor that was in the script. I actually think this story is nowhere near as bad as it's made out to be.
Honestly this is cool.
Old, weird, but cool.
The dialogue reminds me ALOT of early scifi, specifically sicfi including UK actors.
Like peter cushing in starwars as tarkin.
These people knew how to write some elegant dialogue.
The Rani reacting to Sylvesters clown pratfall: "this is idiotic"
Couldn't agree more.
When I watched this, when it was first broadcast, my heart sank. Colin's sixth Doctor had been my favorite, and he was suddenly gone. Poor Sylvester McCoy was no Colin Baker. He simply didn't have the latter's presence or acting chops. Still, fortunately, Sylvester grew into the role, as fully connfirmed by his performance in the 25th anniversary special 'Remembrance of the Daleks.'
I think Colin played the Dr like Hartnell.. Pompous and grumpy know all. But the times had changed and his portrayal seemed unlikeable.
February 22nd 2021 Ah Memories
this one is so awesome
The Rani is a glamorous monster, a bizarre combi.
