    The Camino is a long walk… it’s the first tentative step… a backpack and a pair of shoes… a top bunk and a bottom bunk… a flat path that stretches to the horizon… a cerveza at the end of the day… second breakfast… soulmates you’ve only known for five minutes… it’s a cathedral with towers that shine like beacons.

    A very dear friend of mine, who’d done everything from caring for sled dogs, to being a ski instructor, to Everest, and a million things in between. She was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. She’d planned to make this her last trip, but passed before she could do it. I’m going to do it next year, in her memory

    What can I say. As my husband and I watched, the tears came. You have perfectly summed up what the Camino is. Of all the MANY videos we have watched, when family and friends ask us "why do you keep walking the Camino," THIS is the video we will show them. Beautifully done. Heartfelt thanks.

      I guess. I thought it was a pilgrimage, not just a backpacking trail. I don’t think it’s disrespectful as such it’s just tone deaf. Don’t trivialize it. As much as we live in a religion neutral world I think it’s important to acknowledge traditions that are explicitly religious. This is NOT just a place to experience nature and camaraderie. It’s a faith journey. The fact you waited until the last 20 seconds to acknowledge that disappointed me. And even so you barely mentioned that the destination was in fact a church.

    A year ago (the day after Labour Day in Canada), I left home to walk the Camino Frances. When I finished that incredible journey 40 days after I left SJPdP, I cried a lot ... for months: For what I'd been through, how grateful I was, how hard it had been, how sorry I was it was over, the awesome people who made that journey all that it could have possibly been, and so much more. When people asked me about, I'd start to try to tell them something and inevitably break down in tears: There were simply no words to possibly describe it. But you found them! And I cried when reading them. Great piece of work, Nadine!

    Hey it's Erin. Oh Nadine! This was beyond incredible! The best description I have heard to date. Your version is so inclusive of making it your own Camino instead of the judgments and opinions of those who feel it fits within a framework of definition. Thank you.

      Thanks Erin, over the years I've really learned that there are so many ways to walk the Camino (and, indeed, I feel like I've done it just about every way at this point!). The Camino is truly your own, and I was hoping that would come across (a bit) in this video :)

      I think I need to do another Camino asap, too!! Ha! I'm so happy that my videos became part of your daily routine, that really means a lot (and, don't worry! There are a few more daily vlogs to come!! I took a little break to put this video together, but I had a little more walking to do after Santiago this summer, so more videos to come soon!)

    Six minutes of narrative but you said it all what needs to be said with photos and short videos to supplement your journey. You are such a gifted person to describe your experience. Your choice of scenes , the sound of the winds, the smell of the kitchen and the peculiar smell of the albuergues Mae me re-live my experience... Thank you for sharing.

Thank you, you have made me want to walk it again, something I thought would never happen. You are blessed, and you have blessed us.

    That is a skilled writer using impressive images and words to describe El Camino. What is missing is that people experience spiritual revelations, nothing to do with religion, along "the way," which is more or less what we experience every time we take a long walk on the planet. To discover that side of the experience from a distance, I highly recommend Shirley MacLaine's The Camino, a book originally published in 2000, after she too made this journey under less touristically up-to-date conditions.

      Yes, there are other sources that do so well describing the spiritual aspects of the Camino!

    Watching your video brought back many memories of my walk, undertaken in 2000. What took place for me on my walk was all of what you describe here and more. Had numerous adventures, and blisters, it was here I made a lot of friends in addition to the woman I was to marry and move to France to be with. I cannot even imagine what my life would have been like had I not left my comfort zone back in California. Thanks for posting your video.

      What a life-changing journey you had! I've always wondered what the Camino experience would have been like when it wasn't well-traveled (I had a couple of friends walk in 2002, and in some ways our experiences were very similar- in the essential ways, I think- but in other ways very different!)

    Thank you for sharing your walk Nadine. I especially liked how you walked your own Camino. As they say, "walk your own walk.". You have done that and you have inspired is all. May I share a poem that captures your spirit for me? It is a snippet of a a translation of a poem by Antonio Machado. I hope it resonates.
    Traveler, your footprints
    are the only road, nothing else.
    Traveler, there is no road;
    you make your own path as you walk.
    As you walk, you make your own road,
    and when you look back
    you see the path
    you will never travel again.
    Traveler, there is no road;
    only a ship's wake on the sea.
