Wow, I haven't seen this copying of stitch on the paper in a very long time!! Someone shown me this many many years ago! Thank you so very much for showing all the different ways and especially the perforated paper way!! Thank you for such a Great tutorial!!
You are amazing. I love your work. I've had a long arm quilting machine for a number of years now and even though I've tried custom quilting, I hate it because I don't know what to do. I live in Australia and there are not that many long arm quilting teachers here so much of what I had done is trial and error. Watching your tutorial has given me the confidence to give custome quilting another go and have a rest from doing pantos. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, I really appreciate it.
WOW !!! loved this tutorial. It was so easy to understand what you are saying and explained it in easy terms for those of us that are beginners. The two quilts you showed at the end are stunning. Thank you for this video.
What a wonderful video. You are so talented, but watching you is inspiring for sure! So glad I found this video! I'll have to see if I can be more adventurous on my next quilting project!
Thank you for being so informative, I’m very new to quilting so I have just gone cray just doing my own thing, but I’m glad I stumbled into this video and now I will try your tips.
Hello Sherri - thank you for sharing what your do. I really like all the designs that you showed. I especially appreciate the symmetry of the repeats. So nicely done!
Thank you for clearing up some of these issues for me. My son is an artist and has an old x-ray reading light box. Wow, what a bright light box that is! Sometimes we have to mute it down with tissue or paper, but it works great!
Thank you for showing us how to transfer the paper pattern (not a stencil but rather from the book) onto transfer paper. Also another idea is to use old fashioned (if you can get it) overhead projector slides for the transferring. I had no idea how to get the designs out of the books. Also someone suggested to me to use the adult colouring books! Apparently some have wonderful quilting type patterns!
Wow, this is the best and most informative machine free motion quilting I have come across, and I've watched hundreds! Thank you for this invaluable advise.
Thank you for a wonderfully informative video. I am about to start the quilting on my first quilt. Before watching your video I had no idea how to get even patterns on my quilt. You explained points in very easy to understand language, and made me feel that I could confidently mark a pattern on my quilt. I especially liked how you broke things down into individual steps and clearly showed and explained to the viewer what you were doing. Many thanks from Elizabeth, Kapiti Coast, New Zealand.
Thk you , you hv given me alot of ideas regarding patterns as I was stuck on them . Trying to think of what type of patterns to put on certain things . This has given me some ideas on what type on the hold. At the moment quilting a baby blanket . So watching this has been very useful.
Great idea of opening the dining room table to create a light box; I have a couple of large pieces of plastic that I can use to bridge the gap. I use a window when I'm tracing appliques but it's nice to know there's an alternative especially when you have larger pieces to mark.
this has been very helpful, I have just purchased the punch with chalk an di have pens and pencils and none of those worked for me., I have several stencils given to me, and now know how to use those. Thank you for sharing this , and the different tools.
Felicidades señora por su trabajo no entiendo mucho el idioma pero a mí me gusta eso que Uds hace es un arte voy a buscar hayuda en español felicidades
There are lots of great tips in this video. I would like to ask-what type of foot you are using when you sew the marked pattern on the paper? Thanks for sharing.
As a beginner, I’ve been scanning RUclips for fmq demos and have yet to encounter a demo that shows how to do it with a full quilt. Usually the demos are on sample or small size pieces. I’m making a twin size quilt and would like to see fmq demos on how to maneuver your quilt sandwich in a regular sewing machine.
Sherri, Please, Please tell me where to get the stencils that have the grooves in them so I can place them on my quilt top and simply follow the design with my fabric pen. I hate, hate the pounce. Jan
Hi,If your local quilt or fabric store does not carry them I would suggest looking online through retailers like Amazon. Here is a link to one for example:www.amazon.com/dp/B00DOAUPD0/ref=asc_df_B00DOAUPD05025575/?tag=hyprod-20&creative=394997&creativeASIN=B00DOAUPD0&linkCode=df0&hvadid=194007750414&hvpos=1o6&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6369383683810943659&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9028900&hvtargid=pla-313130917106Amazon.com: Quilt Stencils By Patricia Ritter-Pageboy Overall www.amazon.com Shop Sten Source at the Amazon Arts, Crafts & Sewing store. I watched your video last night. I sew on a Brother SE400 what has a error message when the machine is not threaded. Does anyone know how to bypass it, so that I can sew perforations? Thank you!

Do you use a larger needle (#16) when you layer the Golden Threads paper. I always feel guilty disposing of my jean needles after a garment. Maybe the holes would be to large. I have never used the Golden Threads and I think the layered idea is a great way to get multiples. My eyes are not as good as they use to be, who's really are! Thanks for sharing some great ideas and methods.
Brenda Trump I've used typing paper and gone over with unthreaded needed and then used the pounce to transfer markings to the quilt. I used a jean needle so I could pick up more chalk on the quilt. I also slightly mist the fabric before running the pounce over the holes which makes more chalk adhere & if I know I'm going to wash the quilt afterwards, I spray the chalk with hairspray which helps it stay on longer while I complete my quilting.
+Kerry Grumbles Hi Kerry. I have feed dogs down, just like you would quilting. I do know people who keep feed dogs up, but I feel like you're fighting with the machine. As always, do what works for you.
What is the best paper for making the quilting stencils? This is very interesting and good to know as I've just started quilting my quilts and I'm not accomplished yet!
Hi, Here is the paper that was mentioned in this tutorial as the one to use for tracing : www.goldenthreads.com/shop/product/golden-threads-quilting-paper-12/ If you want to create your own design and cut it out to then use as a stencil you can use template plastic, cardstock paper or even cut up an old file folder and use that.
Thanks for the reply, however, the link is secured and I do not have an account to open the file for GoldenThreads.com; nor is there any information to create an account.
Hello, click on the link above and then click "add to cart". The cart is located to the upper right (even if it says 0- click on it). Then you can checkout!
Hello, I have done this with the paper stitching around the design with multiple pieces of paper, however only the top one can I see the design. It seems a lot of work to have to draw each of the papers, so guess what I gave up. The good news I learned to free motion quilting and use designs for which I have copied by pencil a few times to get it in my memory. Thanks for the tutorial, easy to listen to.

Hi, Mary. There are many great designers and book authors out there. What I would recommend doing is searching for quilting template design books, finding that ones that you like or that appeal to you and then following that designer.
Hi Nagarita,Yes, that could possibly work to mark the outline. The only thing I would caution about if using this technique is that the more the chalk gets rubbed into the fabric the harder it can be to remove. Rather than just being able to brush the chalk off of the surface of the quilt you may have to wash it to remove the chalk.Hope this helps!

Did you have the feed dogs down or up when you were quilting with the Golden Threads paper?

Thank you so much! I am really enjoying your videos!
Was hoping to see how you manage the whole quilt while staying on the marked lines. Hard enough to do straight lines.
What is the best paper for making the quilting stencils?
This is very interesting and good to know as I've just started quilting my quilts and I'm not accomplished yet!
Hi,
Here is the paper that was mentioned in this tutorial as the one to use for tracing :

When stitching on the paper are your feed dogs down?
Where could we find those beautiful templates of graduated sizes? I mean those hearts or leaves in metal chain. Please tell me.
