  • So this is part 2 where I do my best to find a great lead tone on the single rectifier..
I'm to be honest a little bit scared of this amp.. I've had this amp for a while but havent yet to maka a video of it because... It's just to hard to operate. Getting usable tones takes forever and you can't use it like your conventional tubeamp.
Do I hate it och love it? I don't know yet but I will find out in this video.
Music in this video is from my band called "Broken Vice"
    open.spotify.c....
    Signal Chain:
    American Strat (Original pickups)
    Ibanez RG1570L
    Amp
    Two notes Torpedo Captor
    Avalon M5
    1176 Compressor
    Apogee Rosetta
Wall of sound plugin (Friedman 4x12 cab)

I have the Single Rec Series 2. I always wanted a Mesa since I was a kid. I have to admit though. I am more than underwhelmed. I'm sure there are people who love this amp and because it frustrates me, doesnt mean it's not a great amp. But I want gear that inspires me to play and practice, not something that looks cool but makes me dread the thought of spending more time dialing in a tone than actually PLAYING. When I DO get a tone I like, its GREAT TONE... HOWEVER.... as soon as I change what I'm playing, it's back to another extended period of time attempting to get the amp to do what I need it to to. That is a BIG problem for me and quickly causes me to want to just put the guitar down and walk away. Jamming should ALWAYS be fun, and going down the tone rabbit hole is one thing, but feeling like you live there is another thing all together.
People will say, "oh you just dont have it set properly".... and they are EXACTLY RIGHT... But I've been playing guitar since I was 14 and tone deaf, and even then I could dial in my Bandit 112 within 5 mins and be whaling away. I can still go from song to song and genre to genre on my 6505+ within minutes, hell, seconds, and sound GREAT!! Now THAT to me, is the most defining characteristic of a great amp.

Good tone dude. Just to clear things up for our viewers, the rectification section of an amp is part of the POWER SUPPLY of the amp I.e. not part of the audio path. Most modern tube amps are indeed solid state rectified. Tube rectifiers suffer a very hard life hence most amp builders prefer to build in diode rectification. And a solid state diode is more efficient at getting power supply to the audio components of the amp, hence the “tighter” and more “immediate” response. Great for shredding and metal

Not part of the audio signal, but tube vs diode rectification still certainly changes your sound.

The Tube rectification adds a "SAG" To the tone. Because it's less efficient and power conversion the volume dips, much like your lights dim when your washing machine turns on. Some players liked this SAG as it kind of acts as a natural compressor. You have a sharp attack but the amp pulls back a bit and as your signal weakens into the front of the amp the power slowly creeps back in getting louder much like that of compressor. Much like the SAG or "bias" knobs on pedals it probably makes your gain stage a little grittier too. Silicon rectification gets rid of this SAG.

You pretty much nailed John Petrucci's tone on Octavarium, by Dream Theater. That album is a great example of a Rectifier lead tone.

Can you please post a video on pop-punk / alternate tones with this amp? I’m thinking of getting one... possibly retiring my JCM900. Thanks!

Hello, one question: will you buy the new Torpedo Captor X ? Or is it enough to have the normal Captor ? Because i have an Single Rec. for myself and i need a Load to crank this beast up before i blow my apartment away :D

    • @Rohbemusic
      @Rohbemusic  4 года назад

Hi, No I still prefer the old captor. I wont be using all the fancy features anyway. Hardware is still the same I take it. What would make me upgrade is a power rating of 150 or 200 watt. The captor is to weak to handle a super lead on full volume. For a single rectifier the captor is plenty enough! Thanks for watching!
