He's American and The Shadows were never played or known in the US, but The Ventures had. I am American and learned about them in 1996 by seeing them in a vintage guitar mag and knew they had to be good by their looks. Bought The Shadows album "The Shadows Are Go" and was instantly blown away. Without that magazine I would not have known, so I don't blame him for not knowing Hank Marvin or The Shads before. Fortunately Tower Records in Hollywood had a great import section and carried it otherwise I may not have been able to buy it. Maybe online but e-commerce was not what it is now.
Hank Marvin has lived in Perth, Western Australia since 1986. He played a gypsy jazz gig here two weeks ago. Such pretty playing. Still! I met him after the gig. A proper gent.

Hank Marvin was an iconic figure in British pop music in the (mainly) 60s and 70s. Cool stuff! It should be noted though that the galloping rhythm on the F is created with an echo, it kinda doubles the speed but most folks try to play it straight and sound stressed. It's like a 'Surf' version of The Edge but a few decades before him!
Michael! Little tip: if you press your J key you rewind 10 seconds in youtube. K pauses and L skips ahead 10 seconds. I find it more convenient than using the mouse to rewind a little part.
In Australia, the Shadows were the soundtrack of our lives throughout the 1960's. Their music is still played in shopping malls etc. I saw them live in Shepparton, Victoria in 1962 or 1963.

Jet Harris is the badass bassist in this video. Bruce Welch, the guy in the hat, is responsible for unleashing Olivia Newton-John on us. As much as I love The Ventures The Shadows had the edge over them. They had several hits thanks to Jerry Jordan who wrote Apache. There is also a Chinese drum in this recording which is actually singer Cliff Richard. The Shadows are NOT surf music, just instrumental. You also need to listen to Jorgan Ingman's version which was the hit in the USA. He add some parts where he "answers" the melody. Listen to his cover and you'll get what I mean. Listen to the fadeout on the Ramdrods' Riders In the Sky which ends with the intro to Apache. Try the Shadows Cricketbat Boogie. It's that Telecaster neck on your Strat that is causing all your woes. Even a Tele neck pup won't help you on that one.
The logo shows this is a factory neck on that guitar. I don't think there's any difference anyway between Tele and Strat necks of the era beyond the shape of the headstock. Maybe he needs to buy new tuners. I had a problem with my stock Gibson tuners and locking Sperzel tuners fixed that problem. I love them.
Hank Marvin is an absolute legend who went on to inspire some phenomenal artists! Like one of my faves Mark Knopfler! Would love to see you do some of his stuff and Dire Straits!

They were Cliff Richard's backing band in the early 60s and wrote many of his hit songs. They had written a song for Cliff called Please don't tease and it went to no.1 on the charts and when The Shadows released Apache it knocked Please don't tease off the no.1 spot. The effect Hank is using in his guitar is not reverb it's echo and with the use of the tremolo or whammy bar gives it a really magical sound that has inspired many guitarists all over the world. Hank is such a legend in the UK they use his name as slang.....I'm Hank Marvin means...I'm starving in slang.
I had a massive surf era in the 90's...my 20's. Still has a place in my heart and I love when I come across it. I grew up on it a bit with my parents, then it was popular again in the 90's with bands like the Pixies, the Breeders and countless other groups I saw live..even at some ska shows.Oh the good times..thanks for the video! 😃
If you use digital delay slap back with a 50s sound and some reverb you will get that Hank Marvin sound, on the F chord the slap backs are actually filling in for Hanks playing making it sound like he's playing faster with extra notes. Great effect.

He is an amazing individual. Guitarist for Steeley Dan and the Doobie Brothers, a 50 year studio musician and a member of the national security council specializing in missile defense. He has so many cool stories.
not practicing enough....practice practice and practice some more till you get it. I just saw a clip of a guy who said it took him nearly 4 years to get a lick down. It was a heavy metal lick that was super fast and all over the place. But he did it.
The final rockin' out section of Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin borrows heavily from Apache, particularly the F1 - A - C - F2 - E - C - A riff. You can sing "and she's buying a stairway to heaven" using the Shadows for a backing track if you like. See if you can find out where it fits in.

Guitarists who say they picked up a guitar because of Hank include Brian May and Jeff Beck as well as Knopfler and pretty much every English guitarist from the 60s and of course the Beatles. As Cliff's backing band and then called The Drifters they had their first No 1 in August 1958 called Move It and the rest is history. You needed to be there but Hank's guitar work and sound in the late 50's and early 60's sounded as though it had come from an alien planet. The next guitar sound to blow my socks off was that of James Marshall Hendrix via Purple Haze, Foxy Lady and Voodoo Child. The first time I heard Voodoo Child through headphones lying on my bedroom floor in the late 60s I listened to it more than 10 times. It was in stereo. Absolutely mindblowing. .
Hank Marvin was/is the original guitar hero, check how many greats cite him as an influence, The Shadows music is still hugely popular in the UK today. He owned the first Strat in Britain, bought for him by Cliff Richard, and crucially for 'that' sound, he was given a tape delay machine by Joe Brown who didn't want it. Such a clean precise player. And he also made hundreds of young guys who were wearing thick rimmed glasses feel trendy. Every guitarist should have this classic in their repertoire. When I play Shadows on my Strat, both my parents (in their 70's) get teary eyed. If you're looking to reproduce the sound- 12 gauge nickle strings, a multi head tape echo and a subtle touch on the vibrato bar will get you in the ballpark👍🏻 Also check out The Shadows version of "Sleepwalk" by Santo and Johnny.
Hank never owned that first Strat. Cliff bought it for him to play, but it was Cliff's. He finally got rid of it when he gave it to Bruce Welch. Welch had produced a hit album for Cliff and Cliff wanted to show his appreciation.

@@jacko717 No, Cliff bought it for Hank to use, but retained ownership of it until the 70s. Hank used it until the mid-60s when the Shadows were endorsing Burns guitars. Cliff still owned it. When Bruce Welch produced a hit album for Cliff he gave it to Bruce as a thank you. There are clips of Bruce with it on You Tube.
@@jacko717 No big deal. I was just pointing out that, contrary to popular belief, the iconic read Strat that Hank played was never his at any time. You did say he "owned" it which many think is the case. I also thought that way until I read something about Bruce and how he ended up owning it. There is a clip where somebody asks Hank about his guitar and he admits that it was never his and that Bruce owns it. The story about James Burton being the inspiration for The Shadows getting a Strat is nonsense according to Bruce. They evidently didn't know much about Burton outside of his guitar licks. He was actually backed by his own band during his Ricky Nelson years, ironically called The Shadows. We also know he always played a Telecaster too. Cheers!
I'm pretty sure in the middle later section that is MANDOLIN PICKING (not stopping, not so much a "rhythm" as a continuous repeated rapid picking while playing the melody line in the lead guitar). They did vary this up a lot so as to evolve what they were doing.
Also check out The Duo-Tones. They play all the old surf stuff great. I'm an acoustic player and just love their "Surf Music Unplugged" CD The surf songs on acoustic. They are fantastic players.
You should try out some of there other great songs. And there are so many. There's no doubt that Hank Marvin, and the Shadows in general had an awesome sound, that stands out a mile! As my dad always said, Hank can make a guitar talk, as well as sing. Later albums they released had cover songs on them. Instead of just carrying the song's melody, Hank would "play the words" of the song while the others played the melody. And you could hear the words as they played. I have been really lucky to have seen them play live at least 8 times since childhood. And in 2009, after 50 years, the Shadows retired.
I would love to see a reaction video by Tommy Emmanuel as Mike analyses this song :-). Poor Tommy and in particular his brother Phil (as kids) learnt it by dropping a needle on vinyl and when they needed to identify individual notes they would put coins on the vinyl to add weight and make it play slower. Today we are in heaven with the ability to instantly stop, start, rewind, zoom, visual, etc
I'd like to have seen you do this breakdown on a classic Strat. You did a great job, especially lacking a Fender whammy bar. I put a Bigsby on my James Burton Tele. Well done. You might listen to Jeff Beck live playing the Apache/Sleepwalk medley.

Exploring this tume is fun and then trying figure out other ways to play it on different places on the fretboard. I've gathered alot messing with this tune.
Every British rock guitar player of my generation can play this. According to the rhythm guitar player the composer showed them the tune on a ukulele. This band introduced Fender Stratocasters to the UK. The lead guitar player is the first UK guitar hero. We wouldn't have thought of this as surfing music being unfamiliar with Dick Dale. We had heard of the Ventures whom the Shadows liked. They did a version of this song too which is ok except for - in my opinion a rather tasteless scratchy bit in the middle 8. This band were also the backing band for our most successful Elvis clone - Cliff Richard who made the first successful original British rock song Move it - which still stands up today having a cool intro which everybody wanted to learn even The Beatles. This combination of Cliff and the Shadows became household names in the UK selling millions of records worldwide except the US - for example bands in Singapore admired them and copied their style. I liked your analysis especially correcting the trickiest part over the C7. Any British aspiring guitarist in the 50s and 60s was required to learn this tune. In the USA it was the same story, but they had to learn Walk Don't Run.

Lots of misinformation about Marvin's fiesta red Strat. Marvin owned & forever OWNS it PERIOD. The Fender custom shop brought out a custom signature version of his red Strat.

Drives me up the wall when they call this stuff surf. It lacks many of the essential surf trademarks. Outside of a few tunes the same could be said for The Ventures.

I find Shadows songs very satisfying to learn and play. Once you dig in, you start to see Hank's little licks and tricks all over the place.

Really like your variety of song choices lately! This one is a classic, for sure! Your videos always get me motivated to pick up my guitar.
Hank Marvin was/is the original guitar hero, check how many greats cite him as an influence, The Shadows music is still hugely popular in the UK today. He owned the first Strat in Britain, bought for him by Cliff Richard, and crucially for 'that' sound, he was given a tape delay machine by Joe Brown who didn't want it. Such a clean precise player. And he also made hundreds of young guys who were wearing thick rimmed glasses feel trendy.
Every guitarist should have this classic in their repertoire. When I play Shadows on my Strat, both my parents (in their 70's) get teary eyed.
If you're looking to reproduce the sound- 12 gauge nickle strings, a multi head tape echo and a subtle touch on the vibrato bar will get you in the ballpark👍🏻

Hank never owned that first Strat. Cliff bought it for him to play, but it was Cliff's. He finally got rid of it when he gave it to Bruce Welch. Welch had produced a hit album for Cliff and Cliff wanted to show his appreciation.
@@harvey1954 Splitting hairs here. Yes Cliff bought it for Hank and gave it to him, as I stated. I believe that Bruce is now in possession of the Strat.
@@jacko717 No, Cliff bought it for Hank to use, but retained ownership of it until the 70s. Hank used it until the mid-60s when the Shadows were endorsing Burns guitars. Cliff still owned it. When Bruce Welch produced a hit album for Cliff he gave it to Bruce as a thank you. There are clips of Bruce with it on You Tube.

@@jacko717 No big deal. I was just pointing out that, contrary to popular belief, the iconic read Strat that Hank played was never his at any time. You did say he "owned" it which many think is the case. I also thought that way until I read something about Bruce and how he ended up owning it. There is a clip where somebody asks Hank about his guitar and he admits that it was never his and that Bruce owns it. The story about James Burton being the inspiration for The Shadows getting a Strat is nonsense according to Bruce. They evidently didn't know much about Burton outside of his guitar licks. He was actually backed by his own band during his Ricky Nelson years, ironically called The Shadows. We also know he always played a Telecaster too. Cheers!
Have you heard of Bert Weedon's Play in a day book? He was a well known British guitarist in the '60s.
I'm pretty sure in the middle later section that is MANDOLIN PICKING (not stopping, not so much a "rhythm" as a continuous repeated rapid picking while playing the melody line in the lead guitar). They did vary this up a lot so as to evolve what they were doing.

You should try out some of there other great songs. And there are so many.
There's no doubt that Hank Marvin, and the Shadows in general had an awesome sound, that stands out a mile! As my dad always said, Hank can make a guitar talk, as well as sing. Later albums they released had cover songs on them. Instead of just carrying the song's melody, Hank would "play the words" of the song while the others played the melody. And you could hear the words as they played.
I have been really lucky to have seen them play live at least 8 times since childhood. And in 2009, after 50 years, the Shadows retired.
That was fun to watch.

I would love to see a reaction video by Tommy Emmanuel as Mike analyses this song :-). Poor Tommy and in particular his brother Phil (as kids) learnt it by dropping a needle on vinyl and when they needed to identify individual notes they would put coins on the vinyl to add weight and make it play slower. Today we are in heaven with the ability to instantly stop, start, rewind, zoom, visual, etc

And who back then played with the right hand constantly on the whammy bar? Hell, the whammy bar wasn't even around for all that long back then! Exploring this tume is fun and then trying figure out other ways to play it on different places on the fretboard. I've gathered alot messing with this tune.
Every British rock guitar player of my generation can play this. According to the rhythm guitar player the composer showed them the tune on a ukulele. This band introduced Fender Stratocasters to the UK. The lead guitar player is the first UK guitar hero. We wouldn't have thought of this as surfing music being unfamiliar with Dick Dale. We had heard of the Ventures whom the Shadows liked. They did a version of this song too which is ok except for - in my opinion a rather tasteless scratchy bit in the middle 8. This band were also the backing band for our most successful Elvis clone - Cliff Richard who made the first successful original British rock song Move it - which still stands up today having a cool intro which everybody wanted to learn even The Beatles. This combination of Cliff and the Shadows became household names in the UK selling millions of records worldwide except the US - for example bands in Singapore admired them and copied their style. I liked your analysis especially correcting the trickiest part over the C7. This is the band Tony Iommi used to play along with in his room as an aspiring musician.
Any British aspiring guitarist in the 50s and 60s was required to learn this tune. In the USA it was the same story, but they had to learn Walk Don't Run.

At the time this song was done when smoking was the thing to do. From the bands to the late shows on tv and on and on. Not saying it was the right thing to do but that's the way it was. Oh yeah.. the way it was for me too. That's why at the age of 75 I'm now on oxygen. Stupid kid I was.

Lots of misinformation about Marvin's fiesta red Strat. Marvin owned & forever OWNS it PERIOD. The Fender custom shop brought out a custom signature version of his red Strat.

Drives me up the wall when they call this stuff surf. It lacks many of the essential surf trademarks. Outside of a few tunes the same could be said for The Ventures.
