Saw this episode a few years back. Put one in my new home but not the one they showed. Big bucks. The door is a point of potential entry, but if a thief really wants in they will break the window or even pick the lock before wiggling in the dog door and risk getting stuck. Our dogs love it, and no more letting the, out for a pee in the middle of the night. Have had it for a couple of years and have had zero problems.
My 200 lb Mastiff SuperBear just opens the people door and goes out or in. That said he never remembers to shut it behind him. He has people to do that for him.
We put a spring up on top of the door and it closes on its own after our big dog comes out. He is unable to come in since we installed the spring. So, we are making him a home in the garage. We have installed a Window / movable AC and fan due to the hot weather. We are trying to get the little garage door so he can go out. He can come in on his own.
People say this a lot. I find it funny they call a dog door a security issue when they have GLASS windows all around their house. If you stop and think glass isn’t stopping anyone from doing anything anymore than that dog door. None of us are really secure from someone who wants to get in
Don't mean to be critical, but wouldn't you want to flash the rough opening same as with a window? It's the same type of wall penetration with the same water intrusion potential. Funny thing is I watched a (long) video a few weeks ago with Tom showing how to flash a window opening.
When I was little I would go into my next door neighbors house when she was at work through the doggy door My Dad had to put a piece of plywood across it to stop me from getting into her house when she was at work
Think you’re clutching at straws putting that insulation back in when you have made a huge hole in the wall with thin doors! Going to be freezing in there.
@@scotttovey You're joking ST! That is is the 17th most popular way for dogs in UK to lose their heads. Some days the bets are knee deep in piles of decapitated dogs all wanting their heads sewn back on. Doesn't work tho'.
A double door with a connecting tunnel is what I used. More energy efficient. You also would have been better off to find a different location in the house where it could be easily installed rather than damaging the wall for an off-center door.
Should have got a hamster instead ... probably get through the keyhole. I'll leave BG to suggest getting a lobster ... probably get in and via the plughole.
@@matthewsalvador9783 Actually, and I am not joking you, that's exactly how they make "Xoloitzcuintles" and "Peruvian Inca Orchids". Takes about an hour if you keep them at at.
I dunno bout this. How much cold air is that going to let in during the winter. And yeah, not very secure. Even with the lock on top I'm sure that can break very easily and being it's so low to the ground a burglar could just crouch low and work on gaining access without drawing too much attention. Neat idea, but i'm not sold on it.
@@brianglade848 Hmm, if I might refine that ... any house can be broken into ... "its component parts given enough C4". Then merely stroll through the rubble collecting the valuables whilst avoiding the corpse of the dog ... Hah(!) owners never saw that coming.
I'd have a cane Corso, rockweiler or pitbull, waiting inside for a burglar who wanted to come in while I'm away working 11 hour night shifts. And if I'm there and they come in if they get past the dog then they'd have to get shot.
