- Kevin O’Connor helps Tom Silva build the Arlington family dog Soleil her own special door from the mudroom to the sideyard. Why does she need her own door? Soleil is a 125-pound Newfoundland

Soleil is the Arlington homeowners 125-pound Newfoundland dog and she used to have her own door to go outside before the renovation. Homeowners Emily and Nick decided to install one in the mudroom wall, but it can’t go in the ideal place (under the window) because that’s where the outdoor stairs are located. Using the dog’s shoulder height measurement, Tom Silva has started a rough opening by cutting out some studs in the wall and building a new header. The header sits on a stud on the right and a new jack stud on the left to make sure it can carry the load above. Then Tom puts the insulation back in and fills the void with expanding foam before putting in one more jack up against it. He cuts the rough opening through to the exterior-first the two sides and then the header. Kevin O’Connor makes the final bottom cut from the outside, which is pitched two inches lower so that any water will run away from the house. After the drywall is back in place, they install the door kit-with saloon style door panels-and Soleil gives it a test.

I love how the most viewed part is the dog walking through lol
Thank you for making the dog test the door.
@Corat You're welcome.
A dog that big needs a key. Matter a fact their own house.
Saw this episode a few years back. Put one in my new home but not the one they showed. Big bucks. The door is a point of potential entry, but if a thief really wants in they will break the window or even pick the lock before wiggling in the dog door and risk getting stuck. Our dogs love it, and no more letting the, out for a pee in the middle of the night. Have had it for a couple of years and have had zero problems.
I don't even have a dog and still found this enjoyable.
I feel like you need one with a locking mechanism that unlocks when the dog approaches. Still not great, but better?
My 200 lb Mastiff SuperBear just opens the people door and goes out or in. That said he never remembers to shut it behind him. He has people to do that for him.
My Walker Coonhound does this too. Kind of eerie.
@@brianglade848 With built in castanets, if desired.
@803 M'
If I had a 200lb mastiff I'd "open" the door for him! As well.
We put a spring up on top of the door and it closes on its own after our big dog comes out. He is unable to come in since we installed the spring. So, we are making him a home in the garage. We have installed a Window / movable AC and fan due to the hot weather. We are trying to get the little garage door so he can go out. He can come in on his own.
Dog happiness: 10

It has a lock on it.
The dog provides the security
People say this a lot. I find it funny they call a dog door a security issue when they have GLASS windows all around their house. If you stop and think glass isn’t stopping anyone from doing anything anymore than that dog door. None of us are really secure from someone who wants to get in
@@RT-qz5ci Breaking glass makes noise. Crawling through that opening does not.
Well built mother in law door!
Thanks for showing the finished product! Including the dog
Burglar: “woof”
Don't mean to be critical, but wouldn't you want to flash the rough opening same as with a window? It's the same type of wall penetration with the same water intrusion potential. Funny thing is I watched a (long) video a few weeks ago with Tom showing how to flash a window opening.
I grew up with Newfoundland dogs........... best dogs for kids ever invented
No they're not. The Golden Retriever is
@@armyvet8279 Goldens are great dogs too ....... I've had both. Newfs can't be beat
Yeah they really are.
Agree. The bigger the dog the more kids they can eat.
Everyone knows that.
Amen our neighbors had one harmless at that
Beautiful dog, great job,well done.
Gorgeous dog!
What brand is this? Looking for something for my Bulldog.
Tom almost slip himself at the end... 😁
Wait a minute°° How did you put the siding back on?
Great show
Nice dog
WOW Great Job !
Beautiful
@@Kevin-mp5of Beautiful
Ok Kevin crawl through and bark . Woof., woof
Great video 😉
Now a bear can come visit too!
And that will not leave other animals in your house and criminals. 👍 that’s excellent Genius
I believe the brand is Plexidor
Nice 👍
Cool dog
That is cool
I think Tommy could have fit through that door too.
@@brianglade848 hahaha
Where is the video on preparing this wa to accept the header?
Where do I find this doggy door?
Fast learner indeed.
Think you’re clutching at straws putting that insulation back in when you have made a huge hole in the wall with thin doors! Going to be freezing in there.
For the coldest months they will likely cut some foam to fit in the opening.
Don't even have a dog, but I'm intrigued
HA. I was going to say Ben Franklin to!
I wanted to see the finished door!
A good place for a rober to come in from
Or your windows or anywhere else. If they want in they’re gonna get in.
whats the name of the door, I only found the ones that flaps upwards
I'd like to know what brand of dog door this is.
PUPPY!
So what if the dog pokes its head out the pulls it back in? Seems unsafe for the dog.
Apparently, the dog has more sense than you.
@@scotttovey You're joking ST!
That is is the 17th most popular way for dogs in UK to lose their heads.
Some days the bets are knee deep in piles of decapitated dogs all wanting their heads sewn back on.
Doesn't work tho'.
Then it’s head would get cut off. You’re right to be an alarmist.
@@t1n4444 Who keeps that kind of list??? That's just...weird!
@@donabele1243Oh the drollery!!!
😂😂😂
what season is this from?
I’ve got a small dog, so I’d be able to make a door that can fit between the studs. Would that work?
Just make sure whatever door you buy is 14" or less
Does this keep the Chupacabras out?
That becomes a rodent, skunk and raccoon door, real fast. I would never install one of those in my home.
I would include a small person door.... the opportunity presents itself.
And in a strong storm a place for rain and snow if you don't latch it shut.
My cat wouldn't use it anyway
Criminal portal / Cujo Nom Nom Dispenser
lol I notice they didn't say much about cleaning up the OUTSIDE of the house.
Good that Tommy was so attentive to the insulation. Too bad he didn't notice that the dog door was basically a wind tunnel.
what kind of door is that? I cant find one with split doors..
PlexiDor Performance Pet Doors
You think 4 screws will stop a burglar?
A double door with a connecting tunnel is what I used. More energy efficient. You also would have been better off to find a different location in the house where it could be easily installed rather than damaging the wall for an off-center door.
What brand?

DOGS LIVES MATTER
Should have put the side cedar back on
Didnt this already get posted like 3 months back?
I would have taught the dog to use the door nob like everyone else does.
now da lobstahs can come and go as they please
Thahhnks fohr tha door!!🦞🦞
I feel that if he cut the full square of drywall things would have been easier.
would've been easier to put the fluffy dog door in the actual door, that what i did.
Should have got a hamster instead ... probably get through the keyhole.
I'll leave BG to suggest getting a lobster ... probably get in and via the plughole.
They should install a dog brush around the edges for every time the dog enters through it the hair is caught in the brush... patented pending lol
@@matthewsalvador9783 Actually, and I am not joking you, that's exactly how they make "Xoloitzcuintles" and "Peruvian Inca Orchids".
Takes about an hour if you keep them at at.
It's a 15 lite door so......
Where did you buy that dog door from?
door big enough for burglars
no labor cost or door link in description.... not much help basic carpentry
Old house? Where’s the lath and plaster?
I'd have a cane Corso, rockweiler or pitbull, waiting inside for a burglar who wanted to come in while I'm away working 11 hour night shifts. And if I'm there and they come in if they get past the dog then they'd have to get shot.
my neighbor put a pig with a Nixon mask on thru my doggy door... never have recovered
Somebody tell Tom that the Isaac Newton story is not true. Pet doors were referenced centuries earlier in The Canterbury Tales among others. Newton might've made a cat door, but he didn't invent it. Wikipedia has details.
Wikipedia may be right but, just know it's about 85%-90% correct with information.
@@MemoGrafix Fair enough. Even Wikipedia agrees that it's not designed to be an original source. In this case it's easy to confirm the article by searching "The Canterbury Tales", but the article is a *lot* easier to read. :-)
Good Idea, but... if dog backs up it will hurt self!!!
Nice burglar door ...I mean doggie door.
Then they have to deal with the dog
Why couldn't they just buy a new door and install the dog door on it?
@@brianglade848 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂!!!
I am certain I have seen this video before on this channel years ago. Certain.
They can now put a sign out; burglars welcome pfft
Also, try your luck with a really big dog.
@@brumby92 Assuming the dog's head didn't come off earlier ...
Never new that fact about who invented dog doors thanks.
It's an urban legend. There were cat holes in houses before Newton and there's no evidence Newton ever had a pet cat
I dunno bout this. How much cold air is that going to let in during the winter. And yeah, not very secure. Even with the lock on top I'm sure that can break very easily and being it's so low to the ground a burglar could just crouch low and work on gaining access without drawing too much attention. Neat idea, but i'm not sold on it.
Those are for "cat burglars".
@@brianglade848 Hmm, if I might refine that ... any house can be broken into ... "its component parts given enough C4".
Then merely stroll through the rubble collecting the valuables whilst avoiding the corpse of the dog ... Hah(!) owners never saw that coming.
Not insulated, energy wasted.
never was this early in my life
Put a giant hole in the wall for a 10 year old dog that's virtually at the end of its life span? How often do you think the owner will lock the dog door or screw up the steel plate?
Best way to get raccoons and other stuff inside but still look cool, I guess...
Who would want to have this bs in their house?
Someone with a doubly incontinent dog maybe??? A really big dog.
