You assume he did not see it. And no one helped England in 66. If some dumb Argentine Captain wants to keep pushing his face into the referee time after time then they can send you off. Its part of the rules - showing respect for officials. As for the 3rd goal in the final = that needed technology to see what the eye can not see. And even then there is doubt. And anyway Roger Hunt was on hand to tap it in if he wanted but did not as even in the 6 x yard box he saw it as over. No German could have beaten him to that ball if he wanted and the ref went to the linesman as a caution. The ref in 86 did not go to his linesman as he was as useless as fly screen door on a submarine and wanted Argentina to win because he was a biased Puerto Rican and all Central and South AMerican officials are corrupt.
in 1966 there was an english as president of the Fifa, Stanley Rous. England had 5 days to rest between the games, the other strongs teams didnt have this. Brazil that came from winning the two last world cups (1962, 1958) mysteriously was in the group of death and in his 3 games the organization put english referees haha. In Germany vs Uruguay with the game 0-0 the english referee didnt see a hand of Schenellinger that had to be penalty for Uruguay and he ejected 2 Uruguay players. Oh and in the 1970 QF vs Germany it was an Argentine ref who helped Germany out too with some very weird decisions no doubt based on pay back for this morons bad behavior. Seems that Argentine ref forgot who reffed this match.
I love it. Three world cups to Argentina. One for England, in very dubious circumstances. Argentina world cup runners up on 3 occasions. England have never been runners up. Argentina has produced the 2 greatest footballers of all time -Maradona and Messi. Is there any hope for England? Perhaps they could host another world cup, bribe a few referees, produce another Nobbie Stiles, get linesmen to say they have scored goals even when the ball hasn't crossed the line. With all those things in place, maybe, just maybe they could repeat the 'glory' of the sixty-six fix.

It was written by Brian Glanville (famous British sports journalist) that the German referee commented how Rattin had looked into his eyes and that was cause for provocation, along with his constant complaining. Sorry, but these are not basis for a send off in football. For this reason, I don't blame Argentines for their bitter feeling towards this World Cup, specifically this game.
Now I think after the battle of Santiago in 1962 World Cup refs had to get rid of anyone bringing the game into disrepute I mean Argentina carried out a series of terrible fouls desperate to out man England and then banged up on the ref well that’s not gonna help you is it
@@gamestation9437 nobby stiles broke the leg of a french player in group stage, and you say argentina was violent?? england committed 34 fouls, argentina 19. but of course argentina are the thugs, and english are the innocent. your media is really great of make you believe this.
Angry Mike - I own the match, the English committed far more fouls than the Argentines. Also, there was so much confusion at the time of the send off, the commentators were perplexed as much as the players. No matter how one looks at it, it was a disgraceful decision to send off Rattin.
A player should not get in a referees face for six minutes straight and certainly not whilst speaking words in a language not understood by him. The guy was and is disrespectful to the on pitch hierarchy set out in the rules of the game. Players should respect the referees decisions even if they do not agree with them and no matter how awful they are.

Argentina = Cheats of the game. And maradona is biggest cheat of all. In Argentina they applaud him for hand of god goal. So they approve of the cheating ways.
+Jan Janner Pelé scored one goal in the 1966 WC against Bulgaria on a 2-0 win. I recall he did not play against Hungary when Brazil lost 1-3. And he played in the third match against Portugal, another 1-3 loss, but got injured due to some brutal tackling. That 1966 WC was brutal. Thank God for the introduction on yellow/red cards a few years later.
I love England and always will BUT they are still stuck in the 1960's in terms of the way the play Football.Other countries like Spain,Germany,Brasil,Argentina,France and Italy have left them for dead long ago at Football World cups. All their top clubs have foreign managers and they no longer have any English coaches of any calibre that could turn them into World beaters (not since the late Bobby Robson).Their clubs are laden down with foreign players who then go to Football World cups for their respective countries only to destroy them (Cristiano Ronaldo with Portugal in 2006 , Luis Suarez with Uruguay in 2014).In the Champions league they are along way off Spanish clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona.Someone needs to get a hold of them and drag them kicking and screaming out of the 1960's. English clubs need to invest in English players !
English football quite rightly criticized Italian clubs in the 80's and 90's for buying foreign players but ironically enough the premiereship itself is now full of foreigners. All countries should, although they probably never will, nationalize their leagues.
It's kinda strange how many times the host nation always does at least REASONABLY well each time. I can't believe it's just playing in front a a predominantly home crowd each time that causes it.
Everyone always forget that they say 1966 is cover in controversy. They may be right or wrong. But one thing is for sure 1966 is not the only tournament to the covered in controversy. I think of 1978, 2002 and 1934 where both host Nations won the World Cup. (Italy and Argentina). And South Korea beat Italy in very suspicious circumstances in 2002.
1966 is the most fixed world cup ever!! FIFA at that time i was a accomplise of the conspiracy...in the match argentina england and uruguay germany.....
Rob Osborne Actually, FC Barcelona give us Leo Messi and not Argentina. He could have play for Spain but he made mistake to choose Argentina. And by the way, many other World Cup has been fixed. For example 78
The 1978 final certainly wasn't fixed. And no, Messi was born in Argentina and if Barcelona hired him was because they saw his potential. What Barcelona did could've been done by any other team their size.
Yeah but the difference was, we weren't at home, we didn't payed the referee and maradona alone scored the greatest goal of football history by dribbling half of the english team.
Anthony cotton It was The Hand of God, but the football's one. And England has never been able to produce player that has even 60% of skill, talent or magic Maradona had. It's the reason why all english football fans are/were upset about Maradona, rather not one single act of cheating.
CalcioEUnico Duncan Edwards. Enough said. Sadly he was killed. You may be right that the English have never really produced flair (magic) players, but "The Tank" could do anything. Same with Bobby Moore.

This World Cup was certainly the most corrupted of the history. From English players who were deliberately injuring french and portuguese players, Pelé multiple agressions, the ref nominations, the stadium choices, rattin sending off, that famous phantom goal... Everything was built for this English home success.
Which players were injured by the English, it was the dirty French that kicked Jimmy Greaves out of the world cup !!!. By the way modern technology has proven that Hurst's goal was at least 2 inches behind the line .... end of story !!!
it's very clear that they're unable to win a world cup without cheating, being that this is their sole title. it's only going to "come home" when they host it again
@@James-jl4jt The host nation at a World Cup has always had an advantage, not only playing in front of the home crowd but also the pressure it puts on referees. I doubt whether West Germany in 1974 would have won the World Cup had they not staged it. The Germans had an easy first round draw and played their decisive second round match on a pitch that was disadvantageous to their opponents, instead of postponing it. However, I don’t begrudge them their victory as they deserved to win the final on the day because they were the more positive team. Similarly, I doubt very much whether Mexico would have reached the quarter-finals in 1970 and 1986, or Spain even the second round in 1982, had they not all had home advantage. The draws for the finals have also been very largely fixed. In 1961 there were photographs of Sepp Herberger, inspecting the beds and the kitchens of a hotel in Chile. And guess which hotel the Germans stayed at for their first qualifying round matches in the Chile World Cup a year later?
Regarding what happened during this match and the entire 1966 World Cup, i think english fans can literally shut their mouth on the Maradona "hand of god" or the Lampard disallowed goal in 2010.... and any others incidents which would happen in the next 100 years.
After watching this and seeing the ball never crossed the line you have to admit England were really jammy. I look at 1966 completely differently now. Payback in 1986 with Maradona and 2010 with Frank Lampard. The ghost of 1966 ensured Argentina won in '86 and Germamy won in 2010!
Hurst's goal was over the line by two inches, this has been proven by modern goal line technology ... You'd have thought it would finally shut up all the idiots, who are still crying over this correct goal, 57 years later but apparently there are still some NERDS who believe the hype !!!

From what I know of this incident, Rattín didn't deserve to be sent off. But then in those days, the number of footballers/referees who spoke English was much less than what it is today. If they'd had a common language, it might have been easier to sort the whole thing out (unless the ref really was that biased). Plus, FIFA hadn't introduced yellow and red cards yet at that time.
everything you said is true but you should also consider that this 'error' was a HUGE help for the host team, all your arguments turn into excuses if you don't start by saying there was a local team that got profit from this mistake, like that goaln't at the final...
It’s funny but before 66 England always beat Germany and Argentina in every game we played home or away we never lost to either Germany or Argentina in fact we beat them in the 1962 World Cup 3-1 so why they thought they had a chance at Wembley I don’t know nobody ever beat England there except Hungary in the 50s
Where is this continual dissent you talk of? Also, how on earth could the ref even understand Rattin. He gave himself away with his reasoning: "I didn't like the look on his face." Yes, great law of the game that one! Your logic (or lack of) astounds me.
For the English Supporters who complain about the Argentinians complaining about the referee(s) being biased towards England in this tournament, Can any of you tell me why Nobby Stiles was not sent off during this tournament? Why Mr. Nobby Stiles was not sent off although he was one of the most aggressive and bully players to ever play in a world cup, he did not play football, this guy was just a tackling bullying machine, so if referees were not biased , why did not he was sent off? while Rattin was sent off for arguing too much, Also why did FIFA change the venue of the WC semi final against Portugal? Also why did the Assistant referee give England the goal in the final although it was not inside? And why the hell didn't the referee stop the game when half of the fans were in the pitch? Can any of you answer me?
Apparently post match England made 30 over fouls while Argentina had 19. Pretty sad. I always thought Rattin got sent off because he did do something wrong
Things like this is the reason why nowadays, all match officials must be able to speak English to referee in international tournaments. In addition, most players on the South American teams play in Europe now, so they're more or less able to understand other languages, including English. Just unfortunate that this was not the case back in 1966.
Watch the match and judge for yourself. The complete match exists. Everyone sees the world through rose coloured glasses anyway. Every match your team wins shows supreme talent, every loss is a cheat or injustice. Every youtube discussion degenerates into that at some point.
I hate to admit it but both happen to be my favourite teams! 😂However this incident happened way before Maradonas 86 heroics! It's just the tragedy of what happened post this WC for England. They somehow just couldn't win it again.☹️ Im trying to Sequence all of them ( English WC tragedies) to the present day. Beaten in qf in 86. Then came the heartbreaking Semifinals in 90 Then again in 98 And again in 2002 And again in 2006 And then again two years ago! It's jinxed for England! Pretty much like the curse of Camelot! Something always goes wrong and they lose out on winning a long deluded WC again and again! However my gut tells me that they can only win it again if they host the tournament! 😁
The biggest controversy was not Rattin's red card or Hurst's goal. The FIFA moved the semifinal between Portugal and England to Wembley from Goodison Park. the biggest controversy of this was not the move, but the FIFA did not tell the Portuguese until very later.
If you see the fouls of Uruguay-Players against West-Germany, you can understand why they were sent off the pitch. That is what Rattin forgot to say in this documentation.
Yes, but did the fouls happen before or after the penalty Schellinger (?) earned but that wasn't judged? No excuse for their behavior, it was barbaric. And latin american footballers do seem to be more violent and dirty minded players (I remember Argentina Croatia from 2018). But if what Rattin says is true about German and English judges being intentionally picked for each other match (plus, Rattin being sent off for arguing alone), it casts a darker shadow. Not unlike one commited against Algeria in 1986 (Iirc).
@@beorntwit711 The Hungarian national team was very unlucky with the English ref in 1954. In the first Hungary-Germany game the English ref couldn't see anything wrong with a brutal tackle on Puskas which made him injured. He had to miss the next two crucial matches. In the World Cup final in Bern, 1954, the same English ref (William Ling) was given the leading role again, what a surprise! The second German goal shouldn't have counted for a clear foul on the Hungarian goalkeeper in the six-yard box. The ref could have given at least one penalty for Hungary but he did not. Then the English ref (with the 'help' of a Welsh linesman) disallowed Puskas' equalizing goal for offside near the end of the World Cup final. Quite unlikely it was offside but the original film clip of that key moment is 'strangely' missing from all the video footages shown even today. You may wonder why... The German-English link benefited Germany that time. In 1966 their refereeing collaboration also worked in their mutual interest or so it seems.
@@beorntwit711 Los europeos se creen dueños de la moral y tambien son salvajes para jugar, sobre todos los que estan cerca del Mediterráneo. Argentina es un latino que si le pegas te devuelve la patada.
Yes but what we must remember was England had never lost to Argentina we beat them every time we played them and we beat them 3-1 in the 1962 World Cup so maybe you should change your tune, Because we beat them again in 1966 and they cheat to win two world cups
The referee did give free kicks to England but did not seem biased. Rattin should not have been sent off but I don’t accept there was an arranged conspiracy. In the Uruguay quarter final the two sendings off, Troche and Silva, were for bad fouls but the German players did roll around a lot, as happened when they played Soviet Union in the semis when Chislenko was dismissed. In conclusion I think Argentina were unlucky but certainly not conspired against. I think Alf Ramsey’s involvement was a bit of an over-reaction too.
It's a sad fact of life that the host nation always seems to get the rub of the green. Argentina '78 and Korea '02 spring immediately to mind. Don't be surprised to see Brazil to win this year's tournament without a heavy dose of controversy.
David Western The Argentina game when we won 1-0 (check out the video 'At the start of the Eng-Arg rivalry') and Geoff Hurst's famous third goal in the Final wasn't exactly conclusive, was it? Not as dodgy as the tournaments I've mentioned, but, still...
That’s ridiculous Italy won in France in 38. France was the host nation not Italy. And France was enemy of Italy at that time. How is that a host nation??
I was 13 at the time, and remember the incident well. In the modern game the referee is often surrounded and cajoled by groups of players who are allowed to get away with it. In 1966, dissent was taken much more seriously as it undermines the referee, and people in those days were more respectful of authority. There was also a culture clash, in that South American footballers were more accustomed to arguing with the referee than those in northern Europe. As captain, Rattin should have known this - "asking for an interpreter" is a poor excuse as the only reason to do so would be to argue with the referee. I was unaware that Rattin had twisted the corner flag: it was not this action that incited the crowd, but the 8 minutes in which he refused to leave the pitch. Great goal by Geoff Hurst by the way.
1962: England 3 - Argentina 1 (Rancagua, Chile) 1966, England 1 - Argentina 0 (London, England) 1986, Argentina 2 - England 1 (México City, México) 1998, Argentina 2(4) - England 2(3) (Saint-Ettiene, France) 2002, Argentina 0 - England 1 (Sapporo, Japan)
Yes at least this guy knows history England beat this team in 1962 anyway 3-1 Charlton scored so they had no chance 4 years later at Wembley England hardly lost there to anyone , Plus a German ref getting fed up with being bullied by Argentina has nothing to do with Maradona being the biggest cheat of all time he even cheated himself by not winning the World Cup fairy which he could of done

Also if I was someone fixing things for England. I would have wanted them playing Uruguay in the Finals certainly not Germany. Germany and Brazil would be the teams you'd least like to play in any Finals
no offense but there is no rivalry between these teams. England needs to play at an elite level to consider themselves to be a "rival" of teams like Argentina or Germany. Right now they are a laughingstock. Should never have fired Capello
Of course they should've fired Capello, he took the blame for England's abysmal World Cup in 2010 and rightly so. He wasn't the right man for the job and neither was Hodgson, both negative managers in my opinion. They never should've fired Sven Goran Eriksson, people say he was a mediocre coach at best but his record is actually pretty good compared to the more recent debacles.
England can't be considered a rival to Germany and Argentina now, but about 8-10 years ago they were still rivals. Also, I know we're talking about a WC final here but Argentina played shitty all tournament.
sam pafc that sounds like an excuse you would make if your team was getting their ass kicked every tournament by their rival oh wait that's England never mind
Now now don't be calling that German referee dogshit. Completely biased yes. Blatantly unfair yes. But he was still a human being. Calling him dogshit is going a little bit too far. In any case the Argentinians aren't crying any more. The English have been doing that since the quarter final of 1986. The Argentinians have had 3 world cups to celebrate since the fix of sixty-six. What has England won in all that time? Oh yes they won an under 20 World Cup in 2017. With another 5 wins in this competition they will equal Argentina's record of 6. but for now, just pass them the tissues so they can dry their eyes.
Why would a German be biased towards England? Rattin just doesn't get it. He seems to be bitter and honestly a cry baby. He's trying to make this all seem like its a conspiracy theory. I saw the highlights of the game and England looked the better team. Even if he didn't get sent off England most likely wins.
It was clear as crystal, German referee, and an English, in charge of West Germany vs Uruguay. Ask yourselves, what did England win after that World Cup, the answer is nothing.
But at the same time this was a very dodgy and suspicious thing that happened I feel very sorry for the Argentinians and the Uruguayans for this because that shouldn’t have happened really but it’s history and we can’t change it
Now that was really stupid of him saying that if he didn't get sent off then somebody else would have on Argentina. I just can't take Rattin seriously in this interview. It was a terribly idea for him to squeeze the British flag on the corner flag. Any guy who does that to any country in any venue would get into trouble by fans. It was also disrespectful. Honestly this interview makes him look even worse.
Germany is definitly more of a rival for Argentina than England now cause Argentina has 3 world cups England has only 1 while Germany has 4 even France is starting to become Argentina's rival
You know which goal I mean. The second one brilliant though it was, was a consequence of the first, although I am not saying England were better than Argentina in 1986.
How brilliant was Maradona in that second goal! As the english commentator said, " There is no debate about that goal! That was just pure football genius".
He called him a Nazi-Fotze. The Argentine captain's family refused to harbour Nazi war criminals who escaped prosecution after WWII. those were the reason's why he was sent off.
Estudiantes vs Milan 1969 Celtic vs Racing 1967 Minute 3:12 What is he complaining about? That IS a foul. No need to keep pestering for an explanation. Clear Foul.
Fact is back in 1966 I don’t think Argentina had ever beat England not at home we beat Germany like 26 times I don’t think we lost to the Germans until 1970
These fools Don’t understand how hard was to beat England at Wembley only Hungary did it in the 1950s after that we never lost at Wembley pretty much we didn’t need to cheat we had the best GK best defender and the European football player of the year
I watched the match at the time. Does Rattin expect anyone to believe that the Argentinians were naïve?? They played the game the way they always do. Horrendous behaviour mixed with sublime skill. Should have beaten us.
Can someone tell me how Argentina football changed from 1966 to 1978? The team that won then was completely different in their approach to playing the game. For example, the rugby tackle on Helmut Haller of W Germany in the Argentina group game in 1966 was ridiculous but they thought there was nothing wrong with it. So why did you change your approach to the game in just 12 years?

From what I know of this incident, Rattín didn't deserve to be sent off. But then in those days, the number of footballers/referees who spoke English was much less than what it is today. If they'd had a common language, it might have been easier to sort the whole thing out (unless the ref really was that biased). Plus, FIFA hadn't introduced yellow and red cards yet at that time.

Things like this is the reason why nowadays, all match officials must be able to speak English to referee in international tournaments. No excuse for their behavior, it was barbaric. And latin american footballers do seem to be more violent and dirty minded players (I remember Argentina Croatia from 2018).
