      To make a judgment whether or not this is a greater than normal frequency of derailments, we would need the history of Norfolk Southern derailments for the last few years, and that would need to be correlated with the track conditions and maintenance schedule/quality in the areas where the derailments occurred. It would also be useful to have the same information for other railroads operating in the same areas.

    A few years ago I saw a post on twitter showing how you can 3D print a train de-railer and install it by hand, now all of these trains are suddenly derailing out of nowhere. but then you look into the statistics of how many derailments happen yearly and its over 1,000. Maybe it is sabotage, maybe we are just paying attention now that the Ohio situation happened. Our infrastructure could use a massive overhaul regardless.

    The ties are worn out. They weren't made for flanges pushing against the sides of the rails with loads many times those when the rails were laid a hundred years ago and more, so the chairs tear out and everything goes sideways. We started replacing ours in the UK in the 1960s, using precast reinforced cement, and it's worked.

      Those tracks were nowhere near 100 years old. Don't have particulars on this specific stretch of track but most wooden mainline ties changed out 10-15 years max (depending on traffic density, climate, etc) and rail on heavily trafficked lines usually at least every 20. Many US mains have been converted to concrete ties, etc and I would wager there are British lines that still have wood ties.

Understand that in North America the type of trains we run here are far different than the tiny freight operations in the UK. What works well in one nation with one type of railroading may not work well elsewhere. And seriously, while this original route is in excess of 100 years old the actual track has been replaced many times.

    • @JelMain

      @@cdavid8139 We're a country mile ahead of you in passenger operations, though. Right now, every passenger thinking to be environmentally-aware and travel by train is shaking their head, seeing the body-count if one of those trains was a passenger one. My pa was in charge of the Railway Division of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers when this was sorted out, and the move towards high speed traffic was a spin-off from the need to go to larger tank cars. That led to changes in bogie design, to keep cars upright when derailed, and to track and trackbed, to stop this pile-up. It does still happen when there's an obstacle straight ahead, nothing to be done about that, but we now get derailments without significant damage at far higher speeds, as a result.
      I note you don't cite the reasons for a preference for wooden sleepers. It wouldn't be cost-savings, would it? If so, you've succumbed to the eternal two-out-of-three, you have to choose which of speed, beauty and cost you're willing to dump. You're committed to fast delivery, and you want low cost, so it's not going to be pretty, ie piles of wrecked cars, environmental damage, and blighted communities are your norm. And that is exactly why Ms Brockevitch is on your case, because you're making money at the expense of everyone else.

Railroads here are also not generally committed to fast delivery. Intermodal is an exception but in general we move slower, heavier tonnage trains in the US, Mexico and Canada. Ms. Brockevitch is a publicity hound now. That is why she is on this case. If she were really concerned she would be out investigating the North American trucking system which is far far more dangerous than rail in these three nations.

    Cargo Trains do not derail this often. There are some people doing something to the tracks or to the trains. I hope y'all realize there's a coordinated effort to cripple the Supply Chain, whether it be from the Government, Domestic Terrorists, or a combination of the two. It was Cargo Ships, Factories, Diesel prices(Trucking), and Cargo Trains(not Passenger Trains).

      @kylewells6871 Год назад +1

      Railroads used to own rollingstock, now there's leasing companies like TTX or RailBox that lease them out. I'm sure they own some of their own stock tho, not a 100% sure. And the class A1 railroads own most of the track and they mostly stay on their own rails with the exception of amtrak, so the A1 railroads have to inspect they're own tracks regularly. There are junctions where they kinda overlap tho. I don't think amtrak owns that much track, and Metra may own some but very little in the grand scheme of things. As for maintenance, I think it would land on the company who's leasing them out, but the thing is that it's up to the train crews to inspect their train. And whats going on in railroading is they're running longer trains with less man power. These guys are overworked and being ran into the dirt, and it's all of them. All the major railways in America are doing this. They want 1 man per train.

    I still want to know how the railroads can have derailments costing millions of dollars in track repair, car replacement, hazardous chemical cleanup, lost service on the route involved, and restoration of the area of the derailment, and still turn billions of dollars in profit. My guess is taxpayers are paying for a lot of their unsafe operation. It needs to be looked into!
