We want to encourage Colorado Parks and Wildlife commissioners to rework phase 4 of their current Bill 114 draft so that it emphasizes non-lethal coexistence measures, rules out recreational killing which includes trophy hunting and ensures that a viable wolf population is widely distributed across public lands.
Leave comments or write directly to these CPW commissioners and with your loudest voice share why you are in support of protecting the wolves that will be reintroduced to Colorado.
Here's some language for you to use:
Dear Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commissioners,
I (INSERT NAME) want to make my voice for wolves heard by encouraging you to eliminate Phase 4 from the wolf reintroduction plan.
Grey wolves can bring about positive ecological, economic and social opportunities for Coloradans, but these positive effects can only occur when wolf family groups are intact and not disrupted by trophy hunting or lethal management.
I believe that wolves should be safe on public lands and not subject to being killed. These lands provide a last refuge for biodiversity especially when it comes to keystone carnivores like wolves.
As it currently stands, Phase 4 is a wolf killing loophole that needs to be eliminated. This language specifically has the potential for serious impact on the small number of wolves that will be released in 2023 and any wolves that thrive moving forward: “Any employee or agent of CPW or USFWS or appropriate state or federal or tribal agency who is designated in writing, when acting in the course of official duties may take a wolf from the wild if such actions are to avoid conflict with human activities.”
This type of language opens wolf killing to any reason and undermines any wolf protections. Wolf/human conflicts are few and far between and I feel that the positive effects of wolves in the wilds of Colorado far out weight the negative.
Please consider eliminating Phase 4 from the current draft and listen to the educated guidance that comes from the organizations that are fighting to protect these important animals.
Sincerely,

Decrying hunting and other necessary population management tactics is a piss-poor way to be scientific about anything. You may have been stung a bunch, but you clearly have yet to face a real wild wolf.
Cmon man I can scan a we code with my phone that’s on my phone
I have immensely enjoyed your content over the years.
I highly disagree with your stance here though.
I think you would do well to research how predator conservation works.
No one is suggesting a free for all, kill em all.
It’s x amount of tags per year.
Population control is important, as is the funding that hunting legally brings in.
Or do you think that we should go back to how it was pre 1870s with wolves being one the biggest threats to society.
Or even a decade ago with huge coyote packs of 30-40 that feared nothing. And devastated livestock, even nabbing and killin kids.
Country life is very different that city life.
And I think you would do well to research and share with your viewers how it is in the country.
Maybe take a step and come up to Alaska and see how grizzly’s are here.
Predator conversation is very different than callin it just “trophy hunting”.
Why wouldn't you leave it up to the discretion of the wildlife biologists of the department of natural resources to decide if their numbers are healthy or not?

I live in Colorado and I’m a kid so I didn’t live through it, but I remember people telling me how they were nearly wiped out of all wild parks in Colorado, which nearly ruined the ecosystem, so it’s good to see their populations grow
Yea its weird that they wanna have hunting them for sport back, idiot apparently never learn
The ecosystem was nearly ruined because the nobody hunts anymore, and when deer/elk have no natural predators, they need to be culled or populations run rampant. The reintroduction of grey wolves made sense when the government saw that nobody was paying for hunting licenses. Now, the inverse is not just pheasible, but probable. Culling grey wolves will be just as necessary. Most people alive today have never encountered an actual predator in the wild and it shows. Coyote Peterson is great for getting stung but angry little bigs, but every hour he has spent studying won't prepare him for the reality of a wolf or bear bite. His conservation efforts go as far as his youtube views will let him.
Also, ive lived in Colorado for nearly 30 years

Wolves are some of nature's best population controllers. They're absolutely vital to keeping deer populations down and maintaining habitats. A huge reason they were overhunted back in the day was the human greed to have more deer to overhunt. It's integral to the survival of these ecosystems that wolves continue to be protected from hunting, trapping, and poisoning, and that they are brought back into the states they used to roam, as the age of human hunting begins to end.
The age of human hunting is not beginning to end hunting is a hobby/sport that many many people enjoy and use to get good meat for their family
30 year native to Colorado, it's amazing how much most people (like coyote Peterson) don't know about the reality of predator conservation. He'd shut up real quick if he got bit by a mammal instead of a pissy bug.
@@FyrusOlin You're just wrong.
The reason he probably doesn't do mammals is the high threat of varying diseases transmitted through the bite of another mammal as opposed to the sting of a bug.
Just because you live in Colorado doesn't mean you know crap about the ecosystem.
@@Kitty-xi1sb nah he’s spot on.

A world without wolves would be very unfortunate,I want wolves and other endangered animals 2 thrive forever and not hunted toward endangered or even worst: extinction
We need to breed more wolves
They look like husky!
How is it that we didn't learn from yellowstone. We have to have wolves, if we don't the toll the ecosystem takes and how it also effects our ability to keep livestock suffers. Since we have allowed the deer population to go haywire, they can carry viruses and infections that easily hopped to cattle and other animals and thus take out more animals and wolves livestock do. The will over eat and destroy entire forests and lands with their consumption. When we have wolves who help keep the population in check, this goes down and its better overall.
There are ways to make this beneficial to the farmer and first its paying them to allow wolf researchers on their property to observe the wolves in question that are going for their herd. Next is getting animals that are made to ward off canine predators: llamas, donkeys, kangals, caucasion ovcharka, are all great animals to have to ward off wolves
Trophic cascades are important and overlooked parts of nature. Wolves and other predators are pivotal to conservation and restoration of ecosystems. They control the populations of grazers which allows plants to grow and regenerate forests, grasslands, etc which in turn helps prevent soil erosion and promotes carbon sequestration. Can't be understated how important wolves are to the health of an ecosystem.

@@Rose-tm5kt what if your out in the middle of nowhere, with no edible plant but you have a fire starter and a large population of extremely friendly deer?
Highly disagree because Colorado had such a big hunting game issue that they nearly wiped out the animals in the wildlife parks wolves all over America are endangered to the point you will almost never see even one once while hunting even in areas with alot of deer game Pennsylvania for instance where I'm from has destroyed our population elk and bears while not concerning aren't in a good amount comparably to our deer which is several million. In 1892 all the grey wolves in the state of Pennsylvania were killed off. Excessive hunting game has killed off wolves, bears, many species of birds, American Bison, foxes and beavers which is why hunting regulations are so important to the ecosystem. Doesn't matter how rural you are wildlife game still has rules for what you bring home I used to live in the Allegheny mountains. You're not going to starve because you can't kill a certain mallard or female deer during specific seasons.
@Rose you should and I do, don't care move on

@@nextgen103 Hunting and fishing licenses bring in almost 100 million a year in Colorado alone sooo. Not a great argument when coming to conservation. Hunters give back a lot more than people that just want to protect the predators. These Trophy hunters supply the wetlands, property, breeding grounds, studies and the management of wildlife. Just saying.
Why is every dangerous animal friend shaped
Those predation checks are gunna be fat for those ranchers
The very very few they give out might. But studies from the USDA and USFWS have concluded less that 1% of all livestock mortalities are due to wolves.
I live in Idaho, with that being said I think this is a bad idea, if wolves are not regulated by hunting and trapping their populations will explode beyond our expectations. Wolves are not like cougars or bears, they are strong, smart, and way more efficient at killing large numbers of animals which will include cows, sheep, and horses.
Nobody suggested we introduce a large number of them as to overpopulate.
You know how ecology works, right? They're regulated by their food sources, you know? They have no interest in screwing with man.
@Kitty / You're telling me that introducing 30-50 wolves to an area the wildlife and cattle haven't seen in a hundred years (that the government doesn't want hunters to shoot) is not going to screw over hunters and ranchers? According to boise state radio only 25 wolves were released to idaho in 1995 to 1996. And now there is well over a thousand in Idaho to this day. And they want to release at least 30! The people that want this I doubt are hunters and ranchers. (they people that have to deal with wolves on a daily basis) you can't manage wolves the same as Coyotes and foxes, because they're nothing compared to wolves, they are the most efficient killers on this continent, they never stop. A lady somewhere in the west trapped a wolf that broke its leg, got out, and killed a full grown bull elk the same night! They never stop.
@Kitty / and when you say they are regulated by their food sources, does that mean that they will hunt all the elk, moose, and Deer until there isn't enough left? How do you think that is going to affect hunters that need for for the year, or ranchers that lose cow after sheep because of wolves and start losing their job and way of living.
@@hunterpauly1382 You think nature gives a crap? To them, you're competition.
They won't eradicate deer unless something unforeseen damages the deer population drastically and/or causes the wolf population to jump.
I'm beginning to doubt that you know as much about ecology as you claim to.
If deer just couldn't reproduce, like you seem to think, then wolves would eradicate them.
This is why larger animals can afford less offspring.

Please Colorado CPW Commissioners, cancel phase 4 of the wolf legislation in Colorado: as we now all get to know extensively, not only human beings have zero rights over the life and suffering of other beings, but by interfering with their life and numbers, we are now responsible for a more than alarming decline in species, healthy ecosystems, and tomorrow ‘s food chain for the coming next generation.
As we all know clearly by now, wolves are an essential part of this cycle, and killing these intelligent sensitive animals, not only is wrong for them, but wrong for the coming generations, as not enough wolves mean unhealthy forest, surpopulation of pests, dead rivers, and so much more.
Please fully protect the wolves from men’ cruelty and, as a consequence, our survival systems.
They need to be managed. Montana now has way to many and us as hunters are now specifically targeting them due to our decreasing Elk/Deer populations.
This is the first intellectually honest comment here. You will be downvoted into oblivion (as will I) but you are correct.
No it’s Human Overpopulation that is Mis-managed “..🦗🦟🦗
I do not see the rational educated analysis in this comment: are you saying we need to kill an animal so you can kill the ones he eats? Is that a sufficient reason? What if having too many elks etc. has a serious negative impact on an ecosystem, what is the animal you want to exterminate has way more beneficial impacts on the whole system, than your fridge filled with elk’s meat?
What if we should limit the population of hunters and how much they can kill so a mandatory overall population of various necessary beings is properly maintained ?
Who makes the egg?
I live on Long Island, in New York. We have a huge overpopulation problem with Deer out east, because they have no predators here. Very recently coyotes have been seen so it is being viewed as good for the ecosystem for them to have some natural predators. So yes, overpopulation of elk and deer and such can be problematic as well.
@@maxe5023 Thats also because wolves won’t live in cities. And if they did everyones pets would be top priority for food.

Legend says Brave Wilderness will pin this comment
I love wolves! They deserve to thrive in their natural habitat.
Wait. What will the law be for self defense? Clearly you can’t throw someone in prison if they were attacked by a wolf?
Hunters aren’t allowed to shoot them until their numbers get high enough. So until then, get some donkeys or something. But even donkeys are too reliable and you’ll need like a shove or something to scare em off. And build high fences as well and always lock your doors and garage and all that.
Wolves deserve life, they are part of an ecosystem that rely on them. They in turn "for us" help to keep rodent populations at bay, without...rodents and disease will spread worse than wildfires. There's already issues with squirrels over populating and I'm sure their are a few more that have sprung in population due to predatory control which haven't been looked into because "rodents" don't necessarily come across the human mind as a threat but can be just as deadly parasitic wise/disease
coyotes kill rodents. wolfs kill fawns and calfs. each wolf eats an average of 15-20 adult-sized deer each year.
I'm so tired of predators being targeted as vilified. They are important and we can't just keep driving them to the brink of extinction without consequence
Not a good idea if your going to re-introduce a species that has been out of Colorado for as long as the wolves. you also need a management plan for the wolves without it they will end up just like the elk overpopulated
evidence? where are you getting this from?
Literally every state that has reintroduced them
@@rileytindle6262 "they will end up just like the elk overpopulated"
I'm struggling with this. The only information I could find on the issue of wolf overpopulation in ID and MN was op eds, ranching forums and rural papers that pander to their communities. Idaho is calling for around 150 wolves down from their current 1500. A 90% decline which would effectively make them an endangered species again. There is no way to know what the actual historic populations of wolves were in the west, but some experts think it was in the ballpark of 6000 for western states. Furthermore there were indeed far less cervidae (elk, deer) in North America before the eradication of our large carnivores, particularly in the US. So what we are seeing in states like ID and MN is closer to an equilibrium than what we have grown up with. That might raise red flags for hunters, but not for those who wish to see the natural ecology of these areas restored.
So. Overpopulation is an objective point of view in these states from what I could gather. The management of wolves is wanted by those who like the status quo, think their safety or the safety of their herds are at risk, and who like their big game tags. All without any head to the actual science done by the local governments, USDA and USFWS. Very textbook republican ideologue.
See? You can just say things, it comes across as cheap and you might get caught with your pants down by people who know a thing or two.
protect our elk from the wolves
Wildlife biology should be left to experts not people that get bit by animals.
I’m sure reintroduction programmes like this had to have be investigated and approved by experts, otherwise that would just be risky and unethical for all of the wildlife involved. Mario’s a wildlife biologist. I’m sure Coyote is just there to raise social awareness about the wolves. But if I’m wrong, then I’m wrong.
It’s important to understand the value of hunting although this isn’t a good example. Wolf population is very low, in order for hunting they should be atleast in the 15k. But bears, hogs, deer, coyotes, it’s important for these animals to be hunted since they can damage their own ecosystems, by overeating, growing to large in population, causing property damage
I'm with you. They're brave, they're wild, and they deserve to enjoy another adventure.
In Montana they're decimating the elk and deer population they need to be regulated

Wolves are smart creatures. they will wait for a cow to start to give birth run in and steal the calf from the mother has been happening in eastern Washington the pack is starting to get large. a local man has killed a few saving his livestock. at what point do you let the predators win. I love wolves myself but at what point is the pack large enough. humans and hikers start to become in danger. they are wild animals not locked in cages. each wolf eats an average of 15-20 adult-sized deer each year.
That's the natural cycle of life. We are in their natural habitat. While I understand your concerns in order to maintain many other parts of the ecosystem we must learn to live with wolves and other predators. They are tremendously important to the vitality of an ecosystem. Wolves are part of the phenomenon "trophic Cascade" where they kill grazers (historically deer but now cattle since they're easier to kill) and by killing grazers allow for saplings and young plants to grow and regenerate forests and grasslands. The regeneration of vegetation helps prevent soil erosion and promotes carbon sequestration. All life is interconnected, we as humans tend to forget that our best interests are not always the best interests for earth. It's a special place and as far as we know the only viable place to live in the universe. We must learn to live with nature not against it.
"THE pack?" Mf, wolves live in family groups. One pack isn't gonna get big enough to be devastating typically.
@@Kitty-xi1sb seriously, been a pleasure reading your comments on this post.
You definitely live in the city.
Have you ever seen what a pack of 30+ coyotes will do when they band together?
They lose the fear that they usually have.
Had a large pack in my neck of the woods due to Democrat deforestation policy.
They went after horses, after livestock.
And then after they nabbed and killed a child, the dnr started offering cash rewards for people to lower their numbers.
I suggest you do some research into what life was like before the 1870s with wolves being one of the biggest threats.
Both wolves and coyotes are pack animals.
And they will band together to create large packs. This is basic knowledge to anyone who lives in the country.
You are absolutely wrong sayin that they never get large enough to become a threat.

@@ArminiusSage lol "democrat deforestation policy", if you're talking about clear-cutting likely it was a private company. If it was the Forest Service or BLM they really only use clear-cutting when they have to regenerate shrubland or a forest-type that requires full sun like Aspen.
@@ArminiusSage also wolf packs usually tend to self-limit to around 10-15. Packs larger than that create conflict in their social dynamics. They will split if it gets large.
Stop destroying forests to build houses and we wouldent have a problem. Oh that's right we can't stop it and throwing money at a problem doesent solve it eather. Unfortunately the way our government and society is built right now there is nothing we the people can do to save any animal from loosening there habits and disappearing.
I don’t think anyone actually eats wolves’ meat after hunting them so there’s no point in hunting them.
People mainly hunt them either for sport or the more common reason is to regulate their numbers.
Wolves are my favorite animal I'd sooner eat a human than kill a wolf
No even predators need to be regulated
Wolves are so amazing. Its so sad how they've been hunted down. We need them
Hunters care more about animals than anyone else. Hunters hunt when they are allowed to for fun or food and when they aren’t we love seeing the animals out in the wild! Trophy hunting isn’t a bad thing! Poachers are the issue! Not hunters! And when a species is allowed to be hunted that isn’t a bad thing! It usually means their species is thriving and sometimes too much! Hardcore environmentalists cause a lot of issues for this. For example I live in Island Park, Idaho. We have a lot of grizzly bears and they are and have been, an issue. There are too many of them but they are not allowed to be hunted because of a group of environmentalists up here. Because of this there are a lot of them. They have been getting used to people and they get braver and braver around humans until they become an issue. But we aren’t allowed to hunt them so once they get to much of an issue what has to be done? The city kills them. So the environmentalists are stopping the meat and fur to be put to good use instead wasting the animals life. It isn’t right. I am not saying that the government doesn’t get things wrong about hunting. Just that environmentalists don’t understand what a help hunting is for every species. Not only that but hunters are the ones paying for all the environmental precautions. That money comes from what hunters have to pay to hunt.
Trophy hunting literally is poaching if we make it illegal. Legality is what defines poaching.
How do you know how friendly they've gotten when you don't even live in Colorado?
Sounds like you should be advocating for the hunting of domestic animals, no? Very friendly and don't always fear humans, but they will and have killed on occasion.
@@Kitty-xi1sb I don’t live in Colorado, but calling to just blanket ban trophy hunts isn’t something I can support. I believe the wildlife management sector of the government knows what they are doing in most cases. I may be wrong but I this video shows me no reason why I am wrong. All it is advocating for is a blanket ban on trophy hunts because it would protect wolves who are beautiful. That doesn’t give me information on why they are in danger. I assume he is saying they are in danger because they are being trophy hunted which isn’t a bad thing. If the wolves were in danger of extinction then the government would step in. But right now, the government has great ways of regulating hunts up until environmentalists try to get involved. And what I was saying about the friendliness does not mean the bears are friendly. I mean they are getting more confident going into resident areas and because we can’t hunt them they are wrecking havoc and having to be put down by the city. Domestic animals are much different than wild animals. In fact Coyote says at the end of most his videos that the animals he saw in that video are meant to be watched from afar, not as pets.
@@raphbarney2250 Their extinction in Colorado was, in fact, the fault of trophy hunters who killed its diet for fun.
This caused the wolves to go after livestock even more often until humans killed the entire population.
"Hunters care more about animals than anyone else"
This is literally not true. The hubris is astonishing honestly. If hunters cared about animals more than anyone else then why are their thongs up their ass about this whole wolf reintroduction thing? Balanced ecosystems are not their priority, tags and points on the antler are the priority. And incase you haven't noticed, a lot of hunters are poachers. It’s not like it’s a free for all, kill em all….
It’s kill x amount.
But to your point; yes absolutely, wolves are needed. However not the sheer numbers that there were pre 1870s when wolves were one of the biggest threats to settlers and homesteaders.
Population control is important.
So is funding.
@@Kitty-xi1sb Also, since you wanted to call me selfish and ignorant. I’ll just ask you, do you live in the city? Or do you live in the woods?
If your closest neighbor isnt within 1/2 a mile of you? Then I’ll just say you’re ignorant of what life is like in the country.
Have a beautiful day. :)
I hope you do get out to enjoy the woods.
@@ArminiusSage I asked if you were selfish and did not call you ignorant.
@Arminius Sage Wolves don't want to walk through your front door, man.
ELIMINATE

Only one answer: conservation officers are not doing there jobs
dont put wolves in colorado and they wont need to be protected
Wolves were already in Colorado until yall killed them all. That's why they need protection. You're selfish, you know.
The only good wolf in Colorado is in a zoo
Real colorado native and someone whoe actually understands ecology here:
Wolves are predators, and we don't have the hunters to help maintain populations of any given species anymore. Wolf reintroduction is okay; letting populations run rampant is NOT. Everyone and anyone decrying hunting has a piss-poor understanding of science, reality, and the real natural world.
Recreational hunting is very different from simply hunting.
We should allow them to gain their numbers they had beforehand. Once they have those numbers, perhaps there should be a license of some sort in order to hunt them.
Destroying an ecosystem by overhunting an apex predator is the root cause of this. Surely you'd recognize that we must allow their numbers to grow, as somebody who understands ecology, right?
"anyone decrying hunting has a piss-poor understanding of science, reality, and the real natural world". This is an oversimplified for how complicated this subject is.
it's stupid hunting wolfs. Protect animal not kill them is a part of nature and equilibrium of the planet.
