As a Pistons fans, I celebrated when we drafted him. Injuries killed him, but before the injuries, his ability to handle the ball and get to the basket was incredible. Smart player, high IQ, such a shame about his ankle.
Bro f the injuries.
G. Hill was a beast.. early on and had some very iconic shoes
@@gladlawson61 The two players at the time that were poised to be huge stars were Grant Hill and Penny Hardaway. Injuries killed both their careers, to the point where neither were the player they could be, perhaps should have been.
People forget just how good Grant Hill was back in the day, especially during his time in snowy Detroit. He could have been an all-time great, but sadly he never made it back to the highest of play after his injury after he moved to Orlando.
as a pistons fan, fuck grant hill. he bolted at the first real opportunity and we got better.
I don’t usually do the “kids today” bit but here goes. Kids today don’t understand that dunking was more spectacular those days, not because players jumped higher but because it meant the guy went through a defense that was setup so you couldn’t score those kind of baskets. The 3 was an afterthought almost, people were going for the midrange or the transition game or really just look for the big guy. Players like Grant Hill that went to the basket at will were really something special.
Yep. Went from best thing you can do is "dunk in yo face" to cross em up and hit the J. It all changed when Iverson stepped over Lue.
used to seeing the friction 4 players pass or give it to the twin towers let them work
Players back in the day were alot more physical. These twigs today would get snapped easily. These boys don't even crash the boards for rebounds or play defense. For this reason is why subpar players like P.J Tucker, statistically, is still in the league. To his credit, he at least gives effort on the court and could've easily played in the '90s. Guys like him and Jae Crowder will easily get a roster spot somewhere.
I will say however that the 3-pter allows today's players to rack up more career points faster than the average players of the past.
Maybe they should have been better at shooting lol
@@FACTZ973Players today take significantly more contact. Between all the picks they go through and all the plays at the rim, old school basketball was straight up soft and slow and weak. Just go actually watch it. It's incomparable.
Grant Hill was so smooth and definitely one of the best "what if" players in NBA history. On top of that, he was a great role model and all-around stand up dude!
Still a HOF'er, I'd say even with his injury setbacks, he did alright.
One of the few players that showed absolutely no fear and could go at Mj and Pippen straight up!
If not for those injuries, Grant Hill would've been part of the NBA 75 players. He and Penny Hardaway .
💯💯💯
Also Roy Rose
I’ve always believe the same thing. You know what’s up bro.
No offense, but Hardaway couldn't touch Grant Hill with a ten foot pole. I know numbers ain't everything but look at the stat disparities. Not totals, averages.
Brandon Roy too...
Grant hill had us wearing Fila again lol
Yeah, he did that. I might get some Grants ! They STILL look dope !
; )
Grant Hill was awesome player, and straight up genuine respectful dude...
Grant Hill might be a top five player all time if he didn't get injured. He was scary good!
First of all, I am a Knick. Grant Hill was so good early in his career that I became a fan of his (even Jordan couldn't do that). I'm sure if Grant hadn't gotten such a bad injury, he would be a top 5 player.
Grant was nice. He was fearless. It didn't matter who was in front of him. He was taking it to them. As a Heat fan, I still remember him slamming Alonzo Mourning on the ground and then dunking on him a few plays later. #Savage. He had one of the sweetest crossovers too. He might have been known as a nice guy but on the court, he was a Bad Boy.
bounced mourning's head off the floor like a basketball. not frivolously tho - mourning held that left arm ...so he gave him ...that left arm 💪
Man the 1990's NBA had so much fun game. So much swag and flow. NBA Jam, early 90's hip hop. Starter Jackets. The jerseys like the Orlando Magic, Raptors , Pistons. The colors and styles. The Penny Hardaway sneakers. The basketball cards like Topps Stadium and Upper Deck. NBA Hoops. The old weekend show NBA Inside Stuff and the best times ever with the NBA on NBC and the theme song. I'm not saying the 90's is the best decade in NBA history. I would argue the 80's may have that but the 90's wow. What an era. Was tough, had flash. Had big men playing Center. Hakeem, Shaq, Robinson, Ewing, Mourning, Dikembe. Even the videogames were fun. NBA Live 95, NBA Live 96, NBA Jam, NBA Showtime. Just fun era. Larry Johnson Grandma Ma commercials. The Be Like Mike ones. Lil Penny, even college basketball in the 90/s The 1990 UNLV Runnin Rebels, Michigans Fab 5, UNC, Duke. The 1992 , 94 and 96 dream team. Reggie Miller scoring 8 points in 6 seconds on my Knicks. So much. Then you had the young era of Tim Duncan, Kobe, Allen Iverson that came along. Grant Hill, Penny, Webber, Shaq geez.
Good times missed.
The sky box!!
@@codynevers51 yess that's it. Sky Box. Thank you
Who can forget Willow Bay
Still have my Starter Jacket from the late 80s with the big pocket but it is a Kansas Jayhawk 😊
Remember all those talks about the 'heir apparent'? Grant Hill and Penny Hardaway were the two guys most talked about at the time. Grant Hill was a sensational player. It was just unfortunate that he got injured very early on in his career.
One of the greats. His ten year run, Duke and Detroit, was amazing and a joy to watch. There was nothing he couldn't do and do at a high level. He had a rare combination of grace, power, and basketball IQ.
Obligatory Fuck Dule
Grant hill had unlimited potential in the NBA. It's a shame he was injured most of the time. I respect him for never giving up. He could have just taken the money and quit, but he kept coming back because he loved the game.
By far my favourite player as a young kid, so electric, I was devastated when he got hurt, even as a kid I knew he’d never come back the same. For me, him and the Magic are the biggest “what if” story in the NBA
Grant was a Monster in Detroit!!! Also good to hear the legendary George Blaha on the mic for the play by play!
GRANT HILL WAS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!!!💯💯💯💯
I REMEMBER WATCHING GRANT HILL GIVING SCOTTIE & MIKE THAT WORK,,,FOR REAL!!!!💯💯💯
I remember the first time I really saw Grant Hill. Duke. It's burned into my brain. Not very often that happens. And he's a nice guy.
Grant Hill was like a pre-LeBron...
First time in Cleveland
Very exciting player
If he'd stayed healthy, Detroit would've been contenders with a solid roster
Grant was the original Lebron James
@@Nightwing690facts bro
Grant was the proto type LeBron
Grant is Lebron with a crossover.
He was basically Kobe before Kobe, with maybe a hint of Vince Carter mixed in his game, one of the biggest health related “what ifs”, along with D Rose.
Penny was more like Kobe and Grant LeBron
He was better than them all
Love how grant hill is thought of as such a nice guy. Did everyone see the straight swag after he dunked on Mutumbo and Mourning? Gangsta
The perfect athlete, and life. A gentleman.
I'll keep saying this I wish I could've seen Grant/Penny/Drose complete the cycle smh.
All great ballers!
Grant Hill in his early years could literally score and dunk over everybody. He and Penny were the true Jordan heirs.
Finally, this is one of my all time favorite players! Grant Hill & Penny Hardaway are my 2 favorites!!!
I truly believe that if grant Hill didn't get injured he would have been one of the greatest to ever play the game and a 2 Time champion with the Orlando Magic.
Before Kobe it was G Hill point blank period and yes im a mich fan and had some of jrose sentiments towards G before we drafted him and the fact that he appreciated his time here and made our team respectable what more could i have asked for
I was a big Hill fan. THE MOST underrated crossover of all time. The couple clips of him working Scottie say it all.
you are like me talking my mind about nba through here.. love you man..
i still remember when grant hill was a rookie.
he was "the next jordan".
and then he got injured and his career went down hill.
reminds me of penny hardaway.
I would take Grant Hill over Jordan as a person and a player every time.
Poor Alonzo Mourning always got posterized LOL
How good he is:
1. Rookie of the Year with Jason Kidd
2. Fila shoes mania
3. Signed a contract with 250 million dollars in Pistons. Top 10 highest paid NBA Player.
4. Sprite became official drinks in the NBA.
5. He beats MJ in NBA AllStar votes.
6. Mr. Nice Guy.
7. Mr. Triple Double
8. Mr. Dunker
9. Hall of Famer and so on...
Still my favorite player of all time. Went from possible goat to a 3 and D guy all star post injury. Those were his 2 biggest weaknesses too and was able to become an all star at an older age. Almost as impressive as his 90s era.
Love Grant Hill!! Power Player Hall of Fame quality
If grant hill never had those injuries...... Top 5 player of all time... Easy
Hardaway, Mcgrady, Hill and Rose 🌹? Makes me tear 😢 up...
Brandon Roy
Grant Hill was LeBron James before LBJ, that's how amazing Grant was.
I remember those sprite commercials he did in the 90s he really was one of my favorite player's growing up
If it weren't for injuries, he would be in the conversation for greatest of all time. Up there with LeBron and MJ. He was that good.
@@rusted8157 like lebron is playing defense😃
Sadly, just like his daughter, people who missed his first few years seriously underestimate how good he was.
Grant Hill was LeBron before LeBron. Not even kidding about that. LeBron before LeBron.
My 2 favorite what ifs. Grant Hill and Bo Jackson.
What if bo jackson !? Wtf he was on the pro stars cereal and cartoon and he was the best character. They made wayne gretkzy a buffoon ... have u heard a wayne Gretzky Interview.!? Bland and white af.
grant hill was one of my favorites
Grant Hill and Penny Hardaway two of the best players I got to see in the 1990's that became the big what ifs. And to me both of them would have went down as two of the best to ever do it and Grant should of been on the top 75 NBA player list earlier this year. Was a slap in the face in my opinion. Penny I can understand because his career got cut shorter.
I try not to think, these days of players as being 'sad' when their careers have been cut short. When I was younger I was always wondering 'what if' of NBA players I had read about and even players I knew when I played 'what's happened to them'. Hill, Vince, T-Mac and loads more gave me the 'wonder' factor when reading in Slam (that was my only access to NBA). It was the same with local players, what's happened to them! Injuries and the ebb and flow life takes over. It's great to be able to see them play now, how they played back then.
Great on and off the court. Huge respect for Grant!
Grant Hill, had a LeBron James type of game, before LBJ! If him and Penny hadn't gotten so many injuries! Damn!
He blocked it and still dunked through the block on that first highlight against alonzo mourning. Lowkey grant hill was a nasty build. Blame the doctors for a horrible surgery
🙄
@@Romamb lol
Also he was told he could play on it again when he felt something was still not right with it. I think it was doctors or the team trying to get him to play when he shouldn't have been.
Grant was LeBron before him.
My all time favorite
💪 🔥 Guy was a straight up humble savage, something this league never seen again yet
Why they never show the highlight of grant hill giving it to Jordan
When I was young, it was really joyful to see him and Penny play.
As a Lakers fan, I remember that game winning shot. It was one of the best shots that I seen up to that point of my life. His form was flawless and the shot looked easy for him. Hill was an offensive machine who nobody could stop and only the best could keep up with. He was the face of the "In your face" era of the NBA. To me Kobe was everything that Hill should have been.
way different players. Kobe was a killer, Grant Hills was more of a team player.
Grant would have been LeBron.
He was great . I’m not sure about “right there w Jordan “ but he was amazing . And I never understand why they said the pistons didn’t have a superstar before Grant cause they did , they had Isaiah freaking Thomas !!!
Thing about Isiah was whilst he is one of the greatest PGs ever, he wasn't really liked around the league, and unless you were a Pistons fan, all the other fans hated the Bad Boy Pistons.
Isiah is an all-time great player, but he wasn't a cultural superstar like Grant Hill. Everyone loved Grant, he was a clean-cut kid from Duke, who'd won with his college team, his parents were well known and respected in their different fields. Grant also had an electric game that got the fans out of their seats, not just in Detroit, but around the league. Plus he always came across as a nice guy off the court, which endeared him to everyone, whereas Isiah could be prickly with the press when he was upset or mad.
Grant has numerous commerical deals with big Sponsors, he was the face of Sprite in the early 90s, he had his own shoe which was really fly.
Isiah for his career is obviously a greater player than Grant, no question at all. But Grant was a far greater "star", both in the league and with the fans than Isiah ever was.
Anyone who thinks a prime Pippen was superior to a prime Grant Hill just doesn't know basketball.
Pippen was better at two things: Defense & Running the open floor.
Grant Hill was a VASTLY superior shooter & dribbler, and was just much more polished/fundamentally sound.
No lies told, this dude was cold!!
Man I loved watching this cat Grant Hill was the truth he was special.
Without the injury I'd put Grant Hill over Kobe
Grant hill is my favorite player of all time. NBA guys remember grant Hill giving them that work!!!
He came to my basketball camp one year. Seemed like a great guy.
Your intro is kind of long man but great content.
He was always doing Alonzo Mourning DIRTY 😂
Grant Hill would have been the perfect teammate for Tim Duncan. I wish he had went to the Spurs instead of Orlando. I would have liked to seen Jason Kidd go over there too.
He was such a gifted athlete, those "what ifs" are as high as the sky.
MJ is the GOAT
But Hill is my favourite
Would take prime Hill over prime Pippen any day. Would have been the 2nd best SF after LBJ had Magic not misdiagnosed his injury....like they did Penny
@@gunnernathan7023 Bird is slightly overrated in my opinion. He had a good 4-5 year stretch yes, but his playoff performances are surprisingly meh. Bron had way more longevity and is a better all round player in my opinion
@@jlrob85 that doesn't matter Bird's bag was bigger, he had a better shot, better passer, higher fg% from anywhere, better playmaker, so thats why i say he's the best. durability, longevity are the reason Penny and Grant Hill aren't considered legends but basketball fans know what they had in their bag and know how they really are legends. Bron got beat by team of 40 year olds in 2011 Brons not over Bird in skill and talent, only dominance and stats.
@@gunnernathan7023 I respect your opinion and do think Bird was great but pound for pound, I think LBJ would make light work of him 1 on 1. For me LBJ is the second GOAT.
My favorite player of the 90's, besides Jordan, was Sprewell, but hill's jersey was the first one I own
Grant Hill was the truth back in the day because this man can ball and he was a all around player that could do everything on the court and if he didn't get injured he would have been one of the best player of all time. And on a side note I have a you tube channel type in Russell Mills May 22, 2017 to find me.
Back in the day when Jordan was on the verge of retirement the media always threw around the statement "The Next Jordan." It always pissed me off because none of them had accomplished anything yet. But some reason I never got mad when they bestowed that moniker on Hill, it somehow fit.
My favourite player. I don’t think there is anyone who is faster from the perimeter to the rim. One second he was dribbling at the 3 point line, the next he was stuffing it over a big guy.
I even got his shoes when I was playing. Replaced the stupid Larry Johnson ones which were rubbish.
Hearing grant hill described by Isaiah thomas.... 100% true
The only negative for Grant Hill was going to the University of New Jersey at Durham. Otherwise, he was an all-time great, and a humble killer...
😂😂
Lol
METHOD MAN WORE GRANT HILL FILA SNEAKERS IN THE "ALL I NEED" CLASSIC TIMELESS VIDEO W/MARY J. BLIGE!!!!!
Grant Hill had Lebron type stats before the injuries 🔥
He was amazing, and was never one to lose his temper. He was essentially perfect, which is why it felt so much better when my Hogs took down duke at a home game ncaa final. Had no problems rooting for him in the pros tho, was so exciting and rose is saying something a lot of Arkansas players and fans felt. Us and Michigan were called thugs and that we didn’t play basketball correctly. It was a sweet natty in Charlotte over the scum that is Duke
Two others that you might check out are Penny Hardaway and Ralph Sampson.
Grant Hill was Great
In the words of Gilbert Arenas: Grant Hill was a T2. The league had never seen anything like him. Six foot 8 with the handles of a guard.
I believe he could have had a chance to be top 5-10 of all time if not for the injuries. I wish he didn’t do 4 years in college. 2 and done would have better served him.
Hill was very marketable..
what Pippen did in the 90s angered a lot of great players who saw it as an unfair match up, from one hand you have Jordan the goat, and from the other you have the terrifying side kick Pippen nobody had a chance
From Duke, Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, and Jason Williams, all heart breakers due to injuries, but at least Grant's were basketball related and he got to prove himself in the NBA.
My favorite player from 95 to 2000
Grant Hill drinks Sprite. It's that simple kids 😅
This guy was better than LJ.
WAY BETTER
The biggest basketball "what ifs" were: Grant Hill, Anfernee Hardaway, Derrick Rose, Tracy McGrady, Brandon Roy, Ralph Sampson, and Cheryl Miller. All of them were plagued by terrible injuries.
Other sports: Bo Jackson, Ken Griffey, Jr.
He flat out turned our franchise around just being he superstar with no one else on his team
I love Grant Hill, I have his Pistons jersey
Detroit got there Jordan type of player ! He was Mike an Scottie but couldn’t hold both of there powers in his body I’ll say he was too talented too ahead of his time yes to me he was Scottie pippen an Jordan wrapped in one player cuz in his prime the bulls had problems containing him !!!
I know Glenn Robinson was a great college player, but I still wonder why the Bucks did not select Grant Hill for the first pick in the 94 Draft.
My top 3 biggest what ifs
Grant Hill
Alonzo Mourning
Stephon Marbury
Some tiype of health issuue killed all 3s careers..
They were on their way to greatness
My favorite player all time
Grant was so passionate about basket ball. His attitude was so..."Jordan-ish". And his athletic skills..pfff...no comment!
In our far-from-US part of the world, Grant Hill was a true global sports superstar.
MJ (and Pippen by proximity) dominated our sports sections, and Grant Hill was in the sprite ads. Everybody else in the NBA had a lesser profile in our part of the world.
"Grant Hill drinks sprite" 🤣😂
Ralph Sampson, Penny Hardaway, Grant Hill, and T Mac...the greatest "what ifs".
Grant Hill was the Michael Jordan of all Grant Hills
Grant Hill is a Top 75 NBA Player at 75yrs, if he stays healthy.
Grant Hill, to this day, is the greatest player and talent to come out of Duke University.
If you had to make an "All Injury NBA" Team that never fulfilled their potential due to Bad Luck, and a lack of Medical Treatments, it would look like this:
PG Derrick Rose
SG Grant Hill
SF Dominique Wilkins
PF Ralph Sampson
C Arvidas Sabonis
...and they all make the Top 75 at 75 years.
Got d@%#%# right grant hill us up on that top tier regardless of the unjury.. respect!.... my favorite coming up over pippen ... at times
