  • This is the 9/11/1976 Pitt at Notre Dame game. Pitt had made some waves in 1974 and 1975 under Johnny Majors. Clearly they had the nations best at the tailback position in Tony Dorsett, and Majors had added some very talented players at other positions to back him up. Notre Dame was seeking revenge for a 1975 drubbing in Pittsburgh when Dorsett ran wild on their defense. It would not happen. Dorsett rolled again and a tough Panther defense was too much for The Irish. Pitt was ranked #9 at the time but with a slew of surprising results on this weekend of college football The Panthers rose to #3 after this win and rolled on to the national championship. It was their last national title. This first part of this game is original broadcast. The end of the first half and all of the second half is game film with radio. I claim no rights but I did author the film/radio combination.

Commentary & reporting wasn't nearly as in depth as it is today. We had the printed news , the local sports via evening news,& then the games on Saturday & Sunday( nfl). Oddly enough....I miss those simple times in sports.

Also....the Joe Theismann interview is a PERFECT illustration of how student athletes valued playing for the program first ,& foremost. In today's " NIL" ,& entitled narrative...you clearly see how players have become mercenaries for hire. How 😔 sad...

1976 Pittsburgh was quite a team. Notre Dame beat Pitt the next year. 77 Irish were great too

Pitt was up 9-0 in 77 but couldn't overcome Cavanaugh breaking his wrist.

I like how they call them 'big fella' and they were 230 pounds. It's amazing how big they are today.

What happened to all the second halfs of these great 1970's games Jess? Did ABC erase them or tape over them back in the 70's? Thanks for these amazing gems!

They purposely let the grass grow tall in hopes of slowing down Dorsett. Nice try. Ara made a classic gaffe when he blurted out, "That's a big break for us!" You couldn't blame him, though. The juniors and seniors on that team were his recruits. Jim Lampley's interview of Joe Montana was interesting. I can attest that backgammon was quite popular at the time. I was in college then and my dorm had a backgammon tournament.

I guess the thought is "if the four 6'3 280lb lineman can't stop him, a 1/2 grass will". Huh...sounds kinda silly when ya say it out loud!

And Charlie Weiss had the grass grown long for Reggie Bush. Worked pretty well until the Irish got burned on a 4th and 17 on USC's winning drive.

John Wooden would say "us" for UCLA when doing color commentary for NBC basketball coverage.

The New Orleans Saints' helmets should be the same metallic gold as Notre Dame's helmets were then.

2:13:53 The radio announcer blew it, by saying Dorsett scored a TD when he had crossed the 10 yard line. That being radio, he figured who's gonna know, she he immediately covered himself by saying: no, he stepped out of bounds on the 9. Forty-eight years later, we see that the announcer mistook the 10 for the goal line and just wouldn't admit it. Sooner or later, the truth comes out.
