      @@hpmguitarplayer most important thing i found out while trying to sweep is that "start slow then build up speed" doesnt work,if you start too slow youll just end up with downstrokes on all strings and develop a bad habit. its best to start with a slow strum up and down and then try to callibrate your left hand to sound only the string your strum is on in that moment,and mute all other. right hand muting is also important but you should have that figured out already if youre ready to sweep. It may also be that habit of only using alternate picking is whats holding you back, i sugest you try some economy picking excercises just to (kinda) get into mindset for sweeping

    Remember guys, in a good solo, you gotta have a mix of the two to make your solo interesting. Especially if you build it up in intensity, like Ride The Lightning, La Villa Strangiato, Caught Somewhere In Time, Or Heaven Can Wait, take your pick, Home Sweet Home, all my favorite solos have that awesome ass melody/shred in them.

      The learn how to? Learn a few scales (my personal favourites are A phrygian: you play the notes of D minor, but start and end with an A; and G minor: playing the aforemention "D minor notes" but everything one string higher). This gives you reference points. Then play at a moderate speed, that allows you to play comfortably, without cramping up, without playing sloppy anf basically noodle around a bit. Learn a few solos or lead licks of your favourite guitarists. Learn how phrasing works (instead of playing scales up and down play patterns of notes, use repetitions, create motifs etc.). Learning how to shred isn't that hard. The hard part is sitting your ass down and start doing it.
      If you want some amazing videos on the topic, watch Ben Eller's "Why You Suck" series of videos and his other tutorials and Troy Grady's videos on picking and stuff.

    • @orangestapler8729
      @orangestapler8729 5 лет назад +5

      Shredding is easier to learn than proper vibrato, and proper vibrato makes you sound 100x better than sweeping tons of scales. As someone who basically did non-stop shred/sweep practice for years and can play almost anything except insane 8 finger tapping Broderick stuff, I fully regret not practicing vibrato seriously at the same time and needed to dedicate a very long time after being able to mindlessly shred anything to sound like a competent guitarist. It was much harder to develop a really good vibrato IMO than being able to sweep any arpeggio, but the payoff of a great vibrato is way more than sweeping.
      When you can do both however, then you reach Marty Friedman status.
