Commodores were a huge Alabama Funk ("Machine Gun", "Brick House", "Slippery When Wet") act on Motown in the 1970s. Over the years, though, it was often the Country-flavored ballads ("Sail On", "Easy", "Three Times a Lady", "Just to Be Close to You") written, sung, and produced by Lionel Richie that put them on the Pop charts. After a few years, he kinda started taking over the band, and they pushed back, inspiring him to begin his successful solo career in 1982. This was right before that. They had one major non-Lionel hit in 1985 with "Nightshift" (US#3), while Lionel Richie himself became one of the biggest recording acts of 1982-86 with an impressive string of 13 consecutive USTop10 singles (five of which went to US#1). He was huge. I recommend his hits "You Are", "Stuck on You", "Running with the Night", "Penny Lover", "My Love", and "Say You, Say Me". Really, they're all solid.
@surlechapeau They already reacted to "Hello" and thought it was creepy. The comment section is full of people trying to help them understand the story and that he wasn't after an underage student.
The Commodores most successful period was in the late 1970s and early 1980s when Lionel Richie was the co-lead singer. The band's biggest hit singles are "Easy", "Three Times A Lady", "Sweet Love", "Just To Be Close To You", "Still", "Oh No", "Lady (You Bring Me Up)", "Sail On", "Nightshift", "Brick House", "Fancy Dancer", "Lady (You Bring Me Up)", "Too Hot ta Trot" etc. Lionel Ritchie went on to have a big solo career.
"Still", "Hello", "Dancing On the Ceiling", "Running With the Night", "Truly", "Penny Lover", are some of Lionel Richie's best.😀 Try "Oh, No" by The Commodores
Lionel was a member of The Commodores. He was actually originally the saxophonist for the group, but over time he gravitated to lead vocals. This was all before his solo career.
You should react to Three Times a Lady and dedicate it to Amber. Lionel was a Commodore first. He is a great songwriter as well he wrote Lady for Kenny Rogers
OMG, thank you for setting them straight on group vs solo first! I keep forgetting these two are only less than a year older than my oldest! 😂 They can pick any song from them. Did they make a bad song?!
The first record easy like Sunday morning… And the rest is history. The Commodores got us hooked and for good reason. Because I worked at the Arena part time that they performed and I saw them three times, what a concert never failed to bring everybody to their feet. Each concert was better than the last… Great music and a great time
You guy did "Brick House", on which he didn't sing lead. But from the 80s on, he was the lead singer on most of their hit songs. "Three Times a Lady", "Easy", "Sail On", and "Still" all featured Lionel. Their 1985 song "Nightshift", came after Lionel went solo, but it's a GREAT song, as it was a tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, both of whom died in 1984.
The Commodores were formed in my home state of Alabama, at Tuskegee College in the early 70s. " Easy", " Sail on" , and " Three times a lady", are all great songs. " Easy" has a great guitar riff that I'm sure Rob will love.
LOVE the Commodores! Lionel Richie can do no wrong, in my humble opinion! Your next Commodores song has to be “Sail On,” one of the most savage break-up songs you’ll ever hear! And the groove is soooo good! ⛵️⛵️⛵️
Lionel Richie had a mega dance hit in 1986 with "Dancing on the Ceiling." (You will get to see Lionel and his friends dancing on the ceiling--and walls--just like Fred Astaire did in the 1951 movie ROYAL WEDDING). Check it out!
Love that song too! Thank you for mentioning Fred Astaire in the Royal Wedding movie, that is where I saw that kind of dance routine first when my parents introduced us when they would watch old movies on the weekends. We were all into the Commodores and Lionel Richie's solo career back then too and we enjoyed anything he came out with!
I actually met Lionel Richie once. I am an actor and I was working with a murder-mystery dinner company and we were doing a show at a very classy restaurant in W. L. A.. Lionel and his family were sitting at one of the tables. My character was sitting at one of the tables with my "wife" trying to act like part of the audience. Halfway through the show my "wife" gets "killed" and the detective stands me up to ask me some questions. I speak lovingly about my "late wife" and this time I ended it by saying "She was once...twice...three times a lady". I actually sang the last part of it. Lionel started laughing and banging on the table as I sang. After the show I went up to him and asked him if I owed any payment for singing his song and he just burst out laughing again.
@John Maynard I have watched your work on your demo reels---and I can recall seeing you in a couple of the shows. Good work in a tough profession to be consistently working in!
His career in music began with the funk and rhythm and blues group the Commodores, in which he was a lead vocalist before he transitioned to a fruitful solo career. 1968-1982

The Commodores are true legends. My favorite from them is "Zoom". A couple other suggestions are "High on Sunshine" and "Just to be close to you", but there are many more great choices as well. Lionel was one of their lead singers, and went solo shortly after this album.

The Commodores are just cool AF. So many great songs but I’m a sucker for their softer stuff where Lionel Richie just shines. “Still” “Three Times A Lady” “Sail On” “Easy”…. If I had to just request one of those it would be “Still”♥️
I think that's why Lionel Richie eventually left Commodores. Different musical interests. I love all those sugary sweet songs too. Together with the song Truly. Very soft and deep at the same time. Easy was probably their biggest hit. And Amber at 5:33 "It's so EASY to get lost". For me she can lose herself more often in songs by Lionel Richie 😉
Although, Lionel didn't sing lead, you two reacted to their song Brick House already. I remember Amber saying that her dad would go around the house and sing that line to her mom. They had some phenomenal hits. Definitely check out more
They were 4 songs all named Lady in the late 70's Commodores, STYX, Little River Band and England Dan and John Ford Coley. All great songs. Maybe react to the other 3 for a 'Lady" night!!!
One of my favorite Lionel Ritchie song is “Lady”. Kenny Rogers had a massive hit with it but I prefer Lionel’s original (he wrote the song). Lionel sang it to Kenny during a tribute show hosted by Dolly P just before Kenny Died.
This one big with the disco set. Commodores were a class act! Great reaction. OBTW.... the clothes style was that of the 70s (short shorts that were tight).
J and Amber love your reactions. I'm from Alabama where Commodores are from so I grew up to their music. Love their ballads. Amber your dad may be referring to the mega hit Lady written by Lionel Richie for Kenny Rodgers. But for a for time do Commodores BRICK HOUSE!
I actually prefer the Commodores to Lionel's solo stuff, though I'm not knocking it. They had a very emotional (post-Lionel) song with "Nightshift," released after the tragic slaying of Marvin Gaye.
As cheerleaders in high school, we did a routine to this song lol. Lananananana was a swaying back and forth , up and down lol. Lyric where he says turn my life around was a step forward pivot then again to front again lol. Also before this song they had a big hit Brick House. We had such fun in high school! 🤣😂🕺🏻💃🏻

The Commadores with lead singer Lionel Ritchie at the helm was an absolute hit maker. They are a part of the soundtrack of my childhood. So much to discover here! And they had hits after Lionel Ritchie left too! Look no further than the great Commodores Anthology hits album!
Lionnel Richie is so talented, I think he could write a hit song from his grocery list. Edited to say: The first time I thought this was when I heard his song: "Hello". Much love to you guys you're both so awesome!!
Same guy that wrote "Lady" for Kenny Rodgers. A couple other things to think about. You say, "low budget", but the further back you go, cameras were bulky, expensive and not everyone had one like today, not to mention that editing was done on tape and not on a computer, so timing everything was more challenging. Also, producing audio was harder with far less technology available as well as being expensive (though, the media was better). So, these guys stood above the rest, with all they produced, and it was just plain good!
The members of the Commodores met at the Tuskegee University in Alabama in the late 1960s. Lionel Ritchie was one founding members. He was a major songwriter, saxophonist & shared lead singing duties. "Easy", "Still", "Sail On" & "Three Times A Lady" are his lead hits but "Nightshift" is great & "Brick House" you reacted to last year. Richie left in the early 1980s.

I went the University of Alabama from 1977 to 1983. I had some friends from Tuskegee. We drove over to see the Commodores in '79. Paid $10 and they played from almost 4 hours. Brick House was an hour. 15 years later on Valentines Day I take my wife to see Lionel Richie in Mobile Al. Paid $75 a piece and he played for just over an hour.
Loved the Commodores! Lionel Ritchie was one of the leads. This was before he went solo. Back in the 80s men's shorts were really short and striped knee socks were in style too. I had to really convince my hubby to get longer shorts when they went out of style. 🤣🤣🤣

Their hit 'Three Times a Lady' is an all-time love & romance/wedding song. Also, this is a very early music video (1981), just as videos were gaining popularity, which is partly why it's so simple.

I think I speak for all of who are your subscribers absolutely love it how you guys really get into the music dancing and into the beat other than like many other reaction channels simply sitting there with no emotion at all. Look forward to your reactions every day ends up cheering me up a lot of times.
I've unsubscribed to all those robots lol
IL volo, best voices. Grande A more, Sonreiras, or ole sole mio.
Sail On, Easy, 3 x a Lady all are wonderful, Endless Love (Diana Ross and Lionel) too!!
Impossible to sit still when this music is on. That was the fashion back in the day.
Lionel is classic! Peace, Love!
The 70’s fashion! Lionel wrote and sang but he wasn’t the only one, he just stood out. There are several Commodores songs that you need to do!
Lionel Ritchie w/the Commodores first and then solo career. Loved both!
So much fun to revisit songs I haven’t heard for awhile. Music brings so much happiness.❤️
Commodores was one of my favorite groups then and now.
Want more Commodores fire? Two words - Sail On - fantastic tune. 🎶
It was huge! And so many more hits! Easy, Three Times A Lady, Brick house!
The Commodores, the pride of Alabama. Brings back memories of doing "the bump" to Brickhouse in the clubs in the 70s. That's a dance move btw. LOL
The Commodores were part of the soundtrack of my youth
Lionel had several big hits after he went solo. "All Night Long" and "Dancing on the Ceiling" should get everyone up dancing!
Alwàys a delight to watch you guys jam to this kind of material. It was great to be a young person when this was a new song - you'd be dancing to it!
One of my favorite Lionel Ritchie song is “Lady”. Kenny Rogers had a massive hit with it but I prefer Lionel’s original (he wrote the song). Lionel sang it to Kenny during a tribute show hosted by Dolly P just before Kenny Died.
If I recall the story correctly, Lionel wrote the song for Kenny, with Kenny's voice in mind.
This one big with the disco set. Commodores were a class act! Great reaction. OBTW.... the clothes style was that of the 70s (short shorts that were tight).
You HAVE TO check out "Just To Be Close To You".... It's something special...!
I actually prefer his work with the Commodores more than his solo work. (He started with the Commodores then went solo.)
Commodores had some good songs, of which my favorite is "Still."
I actually prefer the Commodores to Lionel's solo stuff, though I'm not knocking it. They had a very emotional (post-Lionel) song with "Nightshift," released after the tragic slaying of Marvin Gaye.
Great song. I believe Walter Orange was lead at that time?
@@MaryUtah2 Yep. With JD Nicholas on the second verse.
As cheerleaders in high school, we did a routine to this song lol. Lananananana was a swaying back and forth , up and down lol. Lyric where he says turn my life around was a step forward pivot then again to front again lol. Also before this song they had a big hit Brick House. We had such fun in high school! 🤣😂🕺🏻💃🏻

I been requesting songs and they haven't done it yet. Do they check messages on here?
@@GoGorillas
Yes, they've said several times that they find songs in the comment section.
I add mine here, plus I send email to them. They also have Instagram and a family RUclips channel where they can be reached.
Click on the heart icon under the video, on the next page click "about" and get their contact information.
They probably get thousands of requests each day, so it takes time.
@@RitaBowen1 Let's hope not!
@@GoGorillas I'm sure they get TONS of requests every day.
Underrated group; excellent song.
Lionel Richie singing…Dancing on the Ceiling…. Is such a fun filled song….
The Commadores with lead singer Lionel Ritchie at the helm was an absolute hit maker. They are a part of the soundtrack of my childhood. Lionel went on to top the charts with his solo album, and the rest of the band had a hit the next year after Ritchie left. The Youth center dances where I held up the walls while everyone else danced were thumping with The Commadores, Earth, Wind and Fire, Michael Jackson, and Kool and the Gang. We were so lucky. Middle schoolers living the dream...
I saw Lionel play at New Orleans jazz festival the year after Katrina. He had the crowd going crazy. Respectful love songs are awesome and no one does it better.
That takes me back to some old memories. Great music, and only one of their many hits.
Lionel was with them before leaving to go solo. He hit big there too and is STILL in the public eye (American Idol judge).
Have a great day!
yes, Lionel Ritchie was the original lead singer of the commodores before he went solo. He went on to perform and write many great hits such as Hello, Lady (performed by Kenny Rogers, All night long and others too long to mention. You should do more reactions on this great artist.
I am 70 yrs old, and it’s still on my playlist! Along with happy by Pharrell, act like you know by fat Larry’s band, power of soul by bootsy collins, George Clinton and the p- funk all stars, and my son’s favorite song when he was young horsechips by jam band…. All feel warm and cozy but make you want to dance!
Three Times a Lady! Every time I hear that song I’m magically transported back to 8th Grade School Dances. I can smell the makeup that I wore and get that nervous feeling that no boy is going to ask to slow dance with me. It’s amazing how songs can bring up memories!
Oh what a rabbit 🐇 hole you have discovered! Absolutely one of the greatest legendary pop, Soul, R&B and Funk bands from the early 70’s to the late 80’s, and this was all before Lionel Richie went on to have an equally legendary solo career.
One of my favorite songs is Nightshift. Another I love is Say You, Say Me.
The song Easy Like Sunday Morning from the Commodores is one of my favorites.. My older brother was absolutely Psycho for this band!!
Nice to see The Commodores get some recognition-they were an immensely successful group and Lionel Ritchie had boundless talent. Please do more from these guys!
I’m addicted to your channel!!! love it! ❤
Loved the Commodores! Lionel Ritchie was one of the leads. This was before he went solo. Back in the 80s men's shorts were really short and striped knee socks were in style too. I had to really convince my hubby to get longer shorts when they went out of style. 🤣🤣🤣
On my Upbeat Feel Good playlist. Great reaction as always. Love you guys.
Yes, that was Lionel! This was his group before he went solo in the 80's. So cool you are discovering new things about these iconic artists. I wish I can go back into the 80's as a 41 year old and see 80's bands in concert. Request: Commodores--Nightshift, Brick House, Easy Like Sunday Morning.
The Commodores featuring Lionel Richie (before he went solo) are a rabbit hole of musical joy! From here, it's on to Brickhouse, Easy, Zoom, Sweet Love, Sail On, Too Hot to Trot, Just to Be Close to You, Slippery When Wet -- so many possibilities. Their hit 'Three Times a Lady' is an all-time love & romance/wedding song. Also, this is a very early music video (1981), just as videos were gaining popularity, which is partly why it's so simple.
Lionel was lead vocals and he went solo after the Commodores. Great song! Try 'Brick House!'
Lionel Richie is leading this song. Walter Orange also leads some of their songs for instance "Brick House".
Lionel left the group to go solo in 1981, the same year that this song "Lady" was released. He released
his first solo album in late 1982
