- Texas blues legend Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top joined Matt Pinfield for an in-depth discussion for this episode of New & Approved.
Matt and Billy start off by discussing the 2019 documentary "ZZ Top: That Little Ol' Band from Texas," which is a must-see for any ZZ Top fan. We then travel back in time as Billy discusses his earliest days in music from seeing Elvis at 5-years-old to sitting in on a B.B. King session at 7-years-old. Through his exposure to music during his childhood, Billy was destined to be a blues and R&B fanatic.
We also learn about the Houston, Texas music scene as Billy began his music career. Prior to ZZ Top, he was a member of the band The Moving Sidewalks, who were heavily inspired by The 13th Floor Elevators. With The Moving Sidewalks, Billy also formed a fascinating friendship with Jimi Hendrix.
Billy also discusses how ZZ Top's longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis stepped in after Dusty Hill's passing. This was one of Dusty's last wishes.

My mom gave to me the Eliminator Album for Christmas in 83, I was 15. Have Loved them ever since. I saw them this past April 2024 in Reno NV, it was fabulous. Billy has to be the coolest dude in Rock. His vibe just Rules.

Billy used shop at the record store I worked at as a teen. He and I talked about music here and there and it was nice to just discuss as music lovers with no filters or fan boy stuff.... he is very intelligent and a fine person. I was not a close friend but once or twice a year just talked a bit here and there
I love Billy's stories!!big fan i grew up on ZZ Top recycler and eliminator i loved the art as a kid...i miss dusty hill rip

1:27 pm CDT Nashville. One the greatest shows I ever watched. Thanks for having Billy F Gibbons
It's great hearing Billy's tales. I would love to hear more about the early days of the Texas psychedelic scene. I love the Moving Sidewalks, and you can still hear the psychedelic influence in ZZ Top's sound.
Two total bad asses. I’ve yet to meet Mr. Gibbons but Matt is a massively sweet dude. I’m glad things are seemingly going well for him. ❤
BFG is the best old school player that is still with us. One of my all time heroes.
When my family first got cable TV around 1983 or so I was one of the kids who was completely glued to MTV. When the ZZ videos came out, with the great car and pretty girls, complete with the fantasy sequence of the fellow being kidnapped by hot girls in a hot rod couple, I was all in. If the music had sucked it wouldn't have worked but the guitar tones were killer and the hooks were memorable. Add to all that the absolutely unique look of the band and it was a custom made package for television. It sure got my attention
I love when this guy covered Kiss as well when the original 4 members reunited in the late 90's.
very interesting, thanks for sharing!
Saw them Live in 85
This where I go to hear that beautiful voi talk
That's a bit strange. Matt's audio is coming through in stereo where Billy is not.
Hendrix was asked, who's the best guitarist you've ever heard he said..... Billy Gibbons.
Fire the audio tech. ......Have Mercy !!
Man I miss Texas...
Sorry this time I got the name right, my main man Billy Gibbons, King of Cool.

Still really sad about the passing of Dusty but they need to get a real bass player.
At this point it doesn't matter anymore. Love these guys regardless of whoever fills in for Dusty. Elwood's been with them for years.
I agree, Elwood just doesn't seem to fit in ,to me he is trying to be dusty and he's not even close.
Billy Bobbins should be arrested for being so cool.
“Bobbins”?!?!?
That the Reverend Billy F. Gibbons.
Why doesn't this cat zip his lip & let Mr. Gibbons pontificate on all his experiences ? Cuz it's better when he is silent HA !!!
What is up with that awful cap he wears?
Probably bald
@@RustyCrawford-cc1zyBilly Gibbons is 74 years old and still doing music. He’s got to have the right image for what he does.
