- My reason for the tribute is Sonny Liston is my personal favourite Boxer, He being the the most intimadating , underated, misunderstood man in pugilism.
Taking request for future boxing tributes. leave suggestions in the comments

True definition of “they treated him like a monster so he became one”rest in heaven champ
Sonny hauled himself up from abject poverty, and became Heavyweight Champion of the world. His wife Geraldine spoke very highly of him. She & Sonny adopted a child from Sweden. He loved kids and he had an amazing smile. Sonny was no Monster, just a man trying to get ahead in life, a hard life.
CHARLES SONNY LISTON, one of the GREATEST BOXING CHAMPIONS of all times!!!!!!!
Thankyou
If it hadn't been for Ali both Liston and Foreman would have ruled the division for years!!!
@@kevindean1327 Liston's wife and child was kidnapped, and he was told that he will never see them again if he should win the rematch with Ali. So obviously people wasn't completely convinced that Ali could really beat Liston !!!!!!!!!!

@@paulweir5031 Do some research on Sonny Liston, the mob promoted and managed his career, and had their way of keeping him under control. If you observe the 2nd fight, you will clearly see that Liston took a dive
Sonny Liston is like the villian guy in one of them movies where we all would love him more than the hero
Exactly
He's a tragic villain, he's a man that was beaten down by society from the day he was born, he tried to make his life worth living in the brief time that he was happy by giving to others who was less fortunate to him through charitable contributions to orphans, being a reformed catholic pastor, and being a mentor for troubled youths. In the right circumstances, he could've been the single greatest champion and representative of not only the Black race but all races. But instead, he was a man drug down by the demons of his past to his early death, a man who only gets a cursory mention in the history of boxing, for the monumental achieves he did in and out of the ring. A man who is not a great man, but a man who is not evil, he is simply "A man".
@@joshuahall1581 That's very powerful. I'm glad, that more and more people start to understand his complex situation.
For me Sonny is a hero. Even when he lost to Ali, he was a true inspiration....
Thanos
Liston did something that barely any heavyweights have done before or after, he ran through the division like a steam train and beat everyone violently. Understand that Liston could only fight those who wanted too, a lot of top contenders refused to fight Liston because they knew that he could destroy them, that's what made Liston the most intimidating fighter of all time. Because fighters knew that he could potentially end their career with one single beating, and because the media made him out to be an angry criminal.
Liston was an incredible boxer by every era's standards. Go and watch his fights and you will see brilliant distance control, frames and setups, defence and shoulder rolls, good punch selection, great body shots, and a long poleaxe of a jab. These coupled with his great accuracy and freakish God-given power made him one of the greatest fighters of all time. My top 5 heavyweights of all time.
1) Ali, 2) Liston, 3) Louis, 4) Foreman, 5) Holmes.
The thing about Liston is that his intimidating demeanor was a front. According to his family members, trainers, and real friends in the boxing industry, he was a caring and kind man who would do anything for you. He longed for acceptance but the media wouldn't let him move on from his past. The media would turn his words against him and police would harass him, and so he would choose to shut everyone out. He chose to make intimidation his identity to the media when in reality he was a caring kind man who just wanted love. He also loved children and trusted them because they would never judge him.
I think Frazier deserves to be in the list, anyone who beat Ali once, & gave him a run for his money in Manila, has to be in there ! Even though Foreman's boxing style combined with his size/strength proved an antidote to Frazier, just as Ali's speed, reactions, agility proved an antidote to the much older Liston. Frazier *at his peak* was a formidable fighter. Somewhat in the style of the amazing Marciano, BTW
@@daffyduk77 That's fair, my only problem is that all the fighters on my list have more accomplishments than Frazier. Ali fought the best fighters in the best era and beat all of them at least once, Liston steamrolled everyone he fought on his way to a title fight, Louis still holds the record for most consecutive title defences of the undisputed title, Foreman won the championship against top tier competition both times and was the oldest champion in history for a time, and Holmes beat every top contender of his era (albeit not the greatest era) but still one of the best eras in heavyweight history and Holmes dominated. Frazier fought some tough sob's on his career and would be a championship level fighter in any era, but the fact that he only won 1 fight against the other 2 of the big 3 is unfortunate. George was a nightmare matchup for Frazier and Ali was Frazier's equal, however if they let them both continue in that 3rd fight either Frazier would have won or they would have both probably passed out from exhaustion.
Don't get me wrong he is still in the top 10 just not the top 5.
I had a long talk with Foneda Cox in Denver, sometime around 2000. Cox was Liston's sparring partner and a close friend from St. Louis. He told me: Sonny was the nicest guy in the world except when drinking. Then he was the opposite. He had the biggest penis Foneda ever saw and he put prostitutes in the hospital from jamming them. He said Sonny ruined Foneda's driving record. When drunk Sonny would stubbornly insist on driving but when cops would tail him he's switch seats with him.
This guy smash through the heavyweight contenders to champion he was most powerful at 57'58'59' till the 62' the day he Met the young Ali. Liston was avoided like a plague 14 total of top fighter avoided fighting Liston! Can't imagine what he would to modern cruiserweight/heavyweight division. My Favourite Fighter of all time. He was both a boxer and a puncher not just a mindless slugger..
And he was not 32 when he met Ali
@@fumbi6725 Probably 38, by Floyd Patterson's reckoning.
@@paulweir5031 That means he is only 1 year younger than Floyd?
But even his Mother said he was born in January '35.
Wish sonny liston would've fought Cassius clay 1960/ 1962,different outcome
Ali fought both Foreman and Liston, and he said that when it came to George he just had to take the hits and wear big George down, in the case of Liston, he simply did not want to get hit at all. So for Ali it was certainly Sonny that hit harder. Foreman trained with Liston after the Olympics, preparing him for pro boxing. George said Sonny was the only man that had ever pushed him backwards with sheer strength alone. He also said that you were always really careful not to make Sonny mad! I think it is pretty safe to say that Sonny Liston hit harder than George Foreman.
In the fight against foreman Ali couldnt dance anymore (my legs are gone quote) so that was his only Option. Against liston he still had the option to float like a butterfly so why would he let liston hit him.
No foreman still hit harder
Its just ali wasnt in his prime anymore
George said in an interview with Ring Magazine: “Sparring with Liston is the most dangerous thing that I ever did in my entire life. No matter what I tried against him, it was me who had to revert back to boxing. Nobody made me box like Sonny Liston did and that happened every time we worked together. He taught me many things, including the importance of the jab.”
A good example of Sonny's sheer strength was an exercise he devised in training camp of loading an industrial sized wheelbarrow full of rocks, and wheeling it up and down a hill. Foreman, 19, and training with "the old man," could only carry one wheelbarrow for every 3 for Sonny: “His strength," said Foreman, "you just can't believe how strong he was!"
Sonny is very misunderstood, he was a nice guy but people treated him like he is a villain.
Yeah i really like Sonny but..."Nice Guy"?
He worked with the mafia and beat people up or force them to pay debts he was a bad guy, thought can't blame him Just look at where he was Born poor soul
@@sg.capriolo7308 Yes, Sonny was not a jovial person, but he was "led" by the mafia and could not get out of it, under penalty of life (as it happened).
I would have gotten along with Sonny. He would have seen in me a kindred spirit!!!

"Sonny Liston made me look like a boy scout" - Mike Tyson
The world saw him drowning and did nothing , RIP Champ.
Hall of Fame Heavyweight Champion Sonny Liston was a muscular 6′2″ powerhouse weighing 220 lbs of pure brick. He had iron in either fist and could put an opponent on the mat quickly with either. Sonny was the most ducked fighter of all time. Even Joe Frazier’s team refused to fight him. Liston in his prime was the real deal. He was a great fighter.
They never seen a prime liston
Probably the hardest man to step in the ring rip sonny
Thankyou
Sonny Liston absolutely terrifying 🥊🧨🎆
Very true
44 years old Sonny Liston vs 21 years old Ali that is so Unfair if he was on his prime he would beat Ali for sure
imagine sonny vs mike tyson, i think sonny would beat mike down.
Plus the Box world wanted to get rid of him, That’s why they let him fought instead of delaying it bcs of his shoulder injury.
I Agree with you. No one ever really seen Listons, prime realistically he turned pro in his 30s
He was not 44 Gallender is a jerk off
You all know zero about sonny
Sonny Liston was Foreman and Tyson BEFORE Foreman and Tyson. Tremendous power, biggest hands in boxing history, and an 84" reach. What's not to like
This is an excellent film 🎥
Cheers
Best tribute ever seen, not just for Liston but out of all I've seen
Muhammad Ali said in "The Greatest": "with George I had to let him hit me, with Sonny I had to keep him from hitting me!”
Rocky Marciano said of Liston: “He isn't faking his toughness, and his strength is just something you got to see, and that jab, he can knock a man out with the jab!" When asked how he would have fought him, the Rock shook his head and said “I’d have done my best, but Lord God he is strong…”
Joe Louis said in Gods of War: "It didn’t matter what stance Sonny fought from, he was the best I ever saw.”
Nino Valdes, as he lay dying from cancer, drugged heavily with morphine, was asked by his family if it hurt, and said: “Not as bad as getting hit by Sonny Liston!"
Sonny Liston v. Wayne Bethea Aug 1958 -- Referee stops the fight upon discovering many of Bethea's teeth in his mouthpiece. Bethea, a tough journeyman who had never been off his feet, said after being stopped by Liston: “He must have hit me with a horseshoe in his glove!" Liston hit Bethea and knocked out 7 of his teeth, broke 9 more for 16 lost teeth from one blow!
Zora Folley, then #1 contender for the heavyweight title, said when Liston hit him: “The lights went out, when I woke up, I asked Sonny, what happened, and he said ‘I hit you."
Jonathan Eig wrote of Sonny in Ali: A Life: “Liston does not merely defeat his opponents. He breaks them, shames them, haunts them, leaves them flinching from his punches in their dreams."
"When Sonny was forced to throw the Ali rematch, his reputation and legacy went down with him. A predominantly white, racist media always feared and hated Liston, and were only too happy to humiliate him after that bout, and forget about him almost entirely after he died." -- author Paul Gallender
The story of Liston winning the title from Patterson, memorizing a thank-you speech to deliver when he arrived back home (memorized because he couldn’t read) and then realizing nobody was waiting for him at the airport, and how crushed he was... fuckin' sad, man.
Sonny was born into a family that couldn't afford for him to go to school, and when the family mule died, his mother and sisters claimed Sonny's father hitched his 9 year old son to the plow.
Liston was a different breed; what a specimen
I am so greatfull for this video.
Charles Sonny Liston Is my favorite boxer.
That was a awesome tribute video! Sonny Liston was a very misunderstood man and if he had the right guidance things would’ve turned out much better for him, he is definitely one the greatest boxers of all time and it seems now which is so sad that he is getting more recognition now that he’s dead then when he was alive.😳
He also got off to a late start in his real boxing career, so he was on his downslope when he met Ali. It might have helped him if he'd prepared seriously for the 1st Ali fight though
Imagine if he got adopted by D'Amato instead of going to prison as a teenager!
@@user-ml5ls4ld8b Yes it would of really helped him, in fact in one of his biographies he spoke about how he wish.,He had a good role model to keep him on the right track so that he didn’t get in trouble when he was younger. that part was very sad to read.
There's a lot of myth making around Liston. But it's true he never had first-rate cornermen. The higher he rose in the rankings the more he was the boss in his corner. He didn't respect Willie Reddish, in my opinion. He did very much like Joe Pollino, his cut man.
Chuck Wepner who fought both Liston and Foreman said that compared to Liston, Foreman was Mr. Friendly. He said that getting hit by George was like getting hit by an incredibly strong man, getting hit by Sonny was like getting hit by a baseball bat. Wepner left the ring of the Liston fight looking like he had just been in a horrific car accident. The fight was stopped by ring doctor after the 9th round, Wepner had 6 massive cuts to his face that required the most ever 338 stitches[1] and was pouring blood everywhere, his left eye was swollen completely shut, his cheek as well as nose were broken.
1. Chuck describes his record 338 stitches -- 'Chuck Wepner interview with Tony Polito' @14:20 ...Liston expert, Paul Gallender said, "Sonny Liston was killed by the mobsters, with a heroin overdose, because he didn’t throw the Wepner fight."
People can say what they want about his character outside the ring but as a fighter nobody can deny that he was one powerful son of a gun. And I love his personality and character in the interviews I’ve seen with him. I know we all have are dark side it just so happens he was so physically feared that perhaps his humble and kind character especially to all the kids that he met was not added along his legacy. I think though through the internet people all over the world are watching documentaries tributes and fights of these great warriors and they are all now getting the love and appreciation that they deserve. Thank you for this tribute.
"Liston was a virtually invincible, just dreadnaught of a fighter, and he had this very forbidding, intimidating, utterly hostile manner about him. This guy was a head breaker, that's how he went to prison, and in prison he was a head breaker. He was feared!"
Liston has an aura about him that's made all the more impressive when you learn about his upbringing. The 24th of 25 children, his father beat him everyday of his life up until he was maybe 16 or 17 when he ran away from home and never went back. The man never knew his own birthday because his father did not believe in celebrating it. He gets as far away from home as he possibly can, gets involved with crime, goes to jail, learns to box and the priest that taught him how to box, gets him hooked up with the mob to manage his entire career.
Boxing historians that examined his life have come to the conclusion that he debuted as a professional when he was around 35 years old. So we never saw him in his absolute prime. 35 is retirement age for most fighters. That means that Liston debuted at age 35, fought 17 years against top heavyweights up to and including his last fight at the age of 52. He won his last fight against Chuck Wepner. Wepner did an interview some years back about that fight. Liston broke his nose, his cheek bone, and gave him 42 stitches over one of his eyes.
72 stitches
This stuff about his age is bullshit. He might've been a couple years older than he claimed to be, that's all.
@@newurban99 there's no definitive way to prove it. Liston always looked older than advertised, that's for sure. The stuff about his father and not believing in celebrating birthdays is all true, so I'm not sure how you can claim he was only a couple years older than his official age.
Liston expert, Paul Gallender, has solved the five major mysteries surrounding The Bear in his 2012 biography, 'Sonny Liston - The Real Story Behind the Ali-Liston Fights'. The author's 40+ years of research provide boxing fans with definitive answers to the five most asked questions about The Bear’s life and career:
1) When was Sonny born?
2) Was he murdered? If so, who did it, how, and why?
3) Was the Liston/Clay fight on the level?
4) Why did Sonny throw the Ali fight?
5) Was Sonny Liston as bad a person as the media said he was?
The short answers are:
1) 1919 or earlier.
2) Yes, by mobsters, with a heroin overdose, because he didn’t throw the Wepner fight.
3) Yes. Footage from the event shows Ali in the ring asking his entourage, 'Did I hit him?' . Ali also told Nation of Islam minister Abdul Rahman that Liston 'laid down'.
4) So his wife and son wouldn’t be killed.
5) No. Sonny was a good man.
Liston, the son of a tenant farmer, served two long terms in prison, where he is said to have learned to box. Although he gave his birth year as 1932, there is evidence that he might have begun his ring career as early as 1934, at the age of 17, under the name of Charles (“Sailor”) Liston. If that is true, he was 45 years old when he won the championship. -- Encyclopedia Britannica
"That he fought in 1934 is no secret - even the Encyclopedia Britannica acknowledges it." -- Paul Gallender
His sister, who he was extremely close to, and who remembered his birth - he was much younger than she was - said he was born the year after the Great War (WW1). Which would have made him 44 when he fought Ali the first time.
watch this vid/documentary --(According To Gallender Sonny Liston Was 44 Yrs Old When He Fought Ali) --from Retro Boxing & Documentaries
Gallender is full of crap.

Outstanding creation.

Great work👏👏
I remember an anecdote of how Liston once taunted an aging fat Marciano when Marciano was visiting Liston's gym..Marciano got fired up, took off his coat, started putting on gloves with every intention to fight Liston....Liston sprinted out of the gym like a hare running from a hunter...I am sure Liston could have gone the full length with the older Marciano but instead, Liston showed respect, albeit in a comical way by running out of the gym...
Bullshit story. Marciano was great but a lot of people like to pump up his legend.
LOOK at his hand speed at 1:46 into the video!!! This is a fight when Sonny WAS MORE in his prime. THAT hand speed would have EVENTUALLY tagged Ali IF Sonny had just stayed RELIGIOUS about cutting off the ring. In his prime, I wager anyone that the only thing that would have beaten Sonny Liston was a grizzly bear, a siberian tiger, and a silverback gorilla!
Jake the muss… cook the man some eggs!

My brother and I agreed that Sonny and Ali were tops, but wondered who would win if squaring off in their prime; over the years I have started to think that maybe Ali couldn't have stayed out of trouble for 15 rounds, although he and Holmes had the best powers of recovery.
Three names mentioned and were there any better?
He was the Mike Tyson of the 1960s. He was scary and he was gangster. He was as gangster as Mike Tyson used to be. Maybe even more so.
He was t in the right mindset when he fought Ali he was sad and depressed I feel if he wasn’t he would’ve won.
The 3rd greatest heavyweight of all time! 1st is Muhammed Ali, 2nd is probably Joe Louis, or it could be Liston, not too sure.
Even if it is not possible to prove it, I think Sonny was the best.
Sonny is a legend, but Ali is THE Greatest. Rip both..👑 🙏🇬🇧

The not so invincible addict.
Liston fought in the style of Marciano but could not hit a fast, young Ali often enough or hard enough. The great Ali had no right to stand over him in the second fight. That punch with the whole body coming forward onto the chin of Liston who had just missed and was off balance would have kod anyone. Go to a neutral corner and show some respect.
Nothing similar about Liston and Marciano except both had punching power and were strong.
@@newurban99 Punching power and strength are considered important in boxing, Bozo.

No heart or guts as shown in BOTH his fights with Ali. Liston was only intimidating when he was beating up on blown up LHWs or glass jawed Floyd. Either Klitchko would've easily used Liston as a heavy bag.
