Stevie is who the GOAT call the GOAT!!!! Hit songs from 1963 well into the 1980's. A genius and multi-instrumentalist. My favorites are this one and "Sir Duke" and "I Wish" because of his use of the horns.

You may have read this was the first album Stevie demanded and got 100% control over everything.
I was 18 when it was released and the world EXPLODED over this -no one had ever heard anything like it.
It kicked off ’70s funk and he’s called the father of hip hop.
    He’s the Mozart pop/soul/funk ❤

Stevie Wonder, a musical genious - first album in 1962 at twelve years old! Higher Ground, Sir Duke, I Wish, Living for the City, Signed-Sealed-Delivered, Isn't She Lovely, You are the sunshine of my Life ....

  • @jennhurl
    @jennhurl 2 года назад +11

    "SIR DUKE" is my JAM!
Stevie pays homage to music & those greats that paved the way! "Duke" refers to Duke Ellington.
Here's the lyrics so you can see who he mentions:
"Music knows it is and always will
Be one of the things that life just won't quit - But here are some of music's pioneers - That time will not allow us to forget, no
    For there's Basie, Miller, Satchmo
And the king of all, Sir Duke
And with a voice like Ella's ringing out - There's no way the band can lose!"
    Count Basie
    Glenn Miller
    Louis Armstrong "Satchmo"
    Duke Ellington
    Ella Fitzgerald
I grew up listening to them! My Grandfather was a Big Band Leader. That's where my music education began. Great song. Check it out guys.

The difference: All had real talent! Either as musicians, with real instruments, or song-writers, or talented singers, or all of the above. Nothing digital. No Autotune, pitch-correction etc. Back then, it was an era where the bar was set high. The Beatles, Elvis, The Who, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Simon and Garfunkel, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan...are only a tiny fraction of the generation that either sowed the seeds of quality in their art or fed off the nourishment of listening to and absorbing what they experienced of the music around them. The bar was set high and then raised and raised by the contemporary bands of the time, each trying to be better so as to be successful. Until modern technology began to make everything easy. Each consecutive generation has became conditioned by a world of instant gratification and digital magic requiring little talent, cheap repetitive hooks marketed at the tweenies who don't know any better because of the generation gap, and it has all obscured the need for the building blocks of talented musicianship which gets the result of the '60s and '70s. Of course that talent is still around. But rarely will you find it in mainstream commercial radio. More likely you have to dig for it or hear it live.

Saw Stevie Wonder in concert in 1981. Hands down, he is the best all-around, multi-talented entertainer I have ever seen live, since (sadly) Floyd had stopped touring regularly by the time I was old enough to see them... my only musical regret in life.)
Stevie also had more people onstage - by a factor - than any concert I've ever seen. His percussion section alone was 10+ people, playing cool-looking instruments from all over the world.
He is more evidence that the source of talent like this has to be "divine" or genetic or something.

You are so right about the late 60’s and the entire decade of the 70’s. Most everything that is ridiculously great happened in this small stretch of time. And I was there for it all. Thank God I was born when I was!!! And, yeah, I’m 61, but if you’re lucky, you will eventually be 61 as well. It’s all the same now to me as it was then. Music transcends age and time.

Love this Stevie Wonder song - I remember buying it as a single many moons ago. It's got a great feel to it, a great beat and just a fantastic song. He is such a good singer and an amazing guy. I know what you mean, guys, such a lot of the music created in the 1960s and 1970s for instance has lasted and it's been proved over and over again as we are still listening to it and loving it all these years later. There was none of the technology we have now, these bands experimented, they used whatever instruments they had to create music that, as I've said, has lasted because it was so innovative and exciting. I just feel that a lot of the new music produced nowadays is too controlled and computer enhanced, there's no real creativity as we know it, and it's not very memorable. That's just my opinion and I know there are exceptions, of course there are. Also, it's great that bands like AC/DC and Iron Maiden for example are still bringing out albums. Thanks so much for your great reaction, guys, so good. Love the set, definitely more chill and casual and a really nice change! Interesting to see your room from a new perspective. Love the new intro music too!

Plus, it's true that "If you believe in things that you don't understand, then you suffer. Superstition ain't the way!" My other favorite song of his is "Sir Duke" - fun one too!

Thank you bro’s! Another great reaction! It’s so fun to watch you appreciate the music a lot of us grew up with! I 100% agree! The music back then was sooo amazing and each group had their own unique sound! They worked very hard to get good melody and harmony and arrangements and instrumentation. To me, today I don’t hear any of that. They all sound the same and they are drab. Freddy Fender called today’s music a nightmare. Ask any true musician that put their all into every detail of each song what they think of today’s “music.” You guys will love the Kinks, the Lovin Spoonful, Iron Butterfly (In a gadda da vida..17 minutes) The Beach Boys (Great harmony’s) You would also appreciate The Traveling Wilbury’s! Members…(George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan) Either “Handle me with care,” or “The end of the line.” These are just to name a few. LOVE your reactions! Love your true appreciation for really good music! Thank you!

The 60's to the 90's were amazing times for music. The awful talent shows of today and the emergence of the commercial algorithm, where music is made on the basis of image and saleability, has destroyed creativity and originality. It's a sad thought that there are no new guitar heroes like Hendrix, or multi-instrumentalists like Stevie Wonder anymore. The only ones around are now part of the old school, and due to their age are dying out fast.
Music used to be treated as an art, where the great artists and bands would challenge themselves and challenge the listener, both musically and lyrically. Now it's all so bland and forgettable. There's still great artists out there, but they're being swallowed up by this awful commercial juggernaught. I hope it gets back to how it was.

I agree the 60’s and 70’s produced the best music. I can’t listen to today’s music. Why did the music turned so crappy? Was it money?!

I feel badly for musicians today, so much great music has been done already! And its copyrighted. :(

MTV was the beginning of the end. Visual style & other superficial crap replaced substance & quality.

Good songwriters- and musicians- don't create in order to be remembered, or even successful. They write songs for themselves and people they love; if they spent a lot of time wondering how much a song would be loved, it'd stop them from writing at all. When you're on the high wire, you don't look down.
