  • The stricken Russian cargo ship 'Mekhanik Yartsev' slowly made her way under tow towards Southampton's King George V Dock with assistance from Itchen Marine tugs Wyestorm & Wyeforce from her anchorage in the Solent where she took refuge during adverse weather conditions and stayed for about two days, she had lost some of her cargo of wood just off of Shoreham in Sussex. She was originally on her way to Warrenpoint in Ireland when she got into trouble with some of her cargo shifting causing her to list on her port side badly.
She gradually came into view at Southampton's Dockhead just before 12:45pm after leaving her anchorage about 09:30am on the morning of the 28th December 2017, the ship has 13 crew on board and as a precautionary measure the Yarmouth Lifeboat was also in escort just in case if any crew needed rescuing during her passage up the Southampton Water into Southampton Docks.
When in the King George V Dock some of her cargo will be off loaded and the ship righted again & then will be checked over before reloading her cargo of wood and then she will hopefully then continue on her way towards her final destination port of Warrenpoint in Ireland.

Greetings from a very wind and battered Southampton, thank you for you comment I just had to get some footage of it being towed from it's anchorage into Southampton Docks, she is due to depart from here on 5/1/18 not sure of time then she will continue her way onto Warrenpoint in Ireland.

I guess the stevedores had a very dangerous job to offload the timber

Certainly a lot calmer than the previous 48 hours - see ruclips.net/video/ARer0kE9Eqo/видео.html taken the previous morning from Bembridge RNLI's RNLB Alfred Albert Williams (Tamar All-Weather Lifeboat 16-17) as she headed back to the Mekhanik Yartsev anchored off Lee-on-Solent to relieve Yarmouth RNLI's Severn Class All-Weather Lifeboat RNLB Eric & Susan Hiscock (Wanderer) who had covered the night shift.

It was a strange sight to see but at least all the crew were safe and sound with the help of all those involved to ensure that the retrieval process went ahead safely & just the right weather you needed to retrieve this ship back to Southampton.
