@@Metalbass10000 nah, they were just trolling my comments because they wanted me to do more dweedly doodlies. I can't hear the pedal as well doing that!
I noticed this at NAMM a few years ago - there were lots of pedals from different brands with the same control set and enclosure layout, obviously all made in the same factory. If you buy a thousand units, they'll put *your* name on it.
I think what happened was that Chinese manufacturers that were looking for business started making reference designs to show off their capabilities and at some point customers started buying reference designs with almost no changes. So now nearly all contract manufacturers in China have a catalog of reference designs that their customers can choose from and the customers simply slap their brand onto it. That is why Amazon is flooded with the same products that have many different brand names. And as you noted, Amazon does the same thing with a lot of their Basics line.
Thanks Steve. You actually did the homework for me as I was watching the initial review video. We all know almost everything inexpensive circles back to a common manufacture with companies spec'ing paint schemes for enclosures. What I find endearing about your videos is that you explain, what I call "musician secret language" that's taken me a few years to decipher. Thanks again!
I would (and will) buy these pedals in a heartbeat. The price of pedals is ridiculous given the parts involved and calling something 'boutique' is just a way of justifying being ripped off by gaining some sonic quality that just is in the imagination.
I agree with you. I've had an OCD pedal. I bought a 15 dollar saphue ultimate drive that is extremely close. It bothers me a little buying a pedal from a company in China, but I wonder if it bothers some pedal makers for selling pedals with the same "guts" for nearly ten times the amount.
@@Fausto_4841 TL;DR - You're pretty much right, just look at what Behringer has done in the last ~30 years. I know I'm 2 years late to the conversation, but at least in analog circuits the tolerances of the components in certain designs _can_ make a difference. Capacitors and resistors that are guaranteed to measure within 1% of the advertised spec obviously cost significantly more than parts rated within 10%; back in ye aulde days, if you bought a box of cheap 100 ohm resistors rated at 10% tolerance, you're going to get a random assortment - some will be 110 ohms, some will be 93 ohms, not many will be spot-on at 100. So you could buy tons of cheap components, then match them by hand to one-another so that you have as many 99-101 ohm resistors as possible, or you can spend way more money and save the time+labor buying 1% tolerance caps from the start - you can also have a nice bonus excuse to charge your customers an absolute s-ton of money for "hi-fidelity components". Again, as a reminder - I'm talking about analog circuits, but if we fast-forward to the modern era when the overwhelming majority of these circuits are now not only most often digital (with minimal influence coming from analog components), they're using very tiny surface mounted resistors, super clean FETs and ICs, and capacitors that cost literal tens-of-cents but the quality control of even the cheapest parts is so much better than it was even 25 years ago. Now when you get less expensive 10% tolerance stuff, it's much less common to find one that far out of the target rating, and depending on where these components are in the circuit it probably makes literally zero sonic difference. All that to say - now-a-days, a circuit is pretty much a circuit; higher quality components are a _lot_ cheaper now days, and likewise the quality of cheap components has gone _way_ up, so while there is a *distinction* between 'boutique' & high-tolerance/high-fidelity parts, the *difference* is ever diminishing, and we'd need to spend a much greater amount of money on gear before anyone with average hears and hearing can notice and appreciate the difference (let alone care). Just look at what Behringer has accomplished in the last few decades - from getting sued for making Mackie clones, to 'Behringer City'!
Thank you for reviewing the Amazon basics pedals. I'm trying to get into playing but I can never get the sound right, but both of your videos were a good watch and your playing sounds great.
I worked at Amazon in Seller Support. It was very common that if a seller had a good selling item, Amazon would copy it and go after their market. Very scum baggy indeed!!
Are they sending R and D people to copy it? Or just buying in bulk for steep discounts and rebranding at a lower price? Either way sucks, but genuinely curious
Thanks for letting me know there was a follow up. I am not surprised it's like how Cort makes tons of guitars for a ton of different brands. I am fairly new to NUX recently got their Mighty Lite BT 3W Mini Combo Amp on a deal of the day for 60 bucks. I was amazed with it it's a great little take anywhere amp. Can be plugged in or battery powered is blutooth ready so you can control it with your phone. I have a ton of pedals already not much I need but i am going to check out a few that I might find useful from either of these companies.
Nice video. I think the pedals sound great. I've also seen a brand of pedals called Twinote ... and the small format versions of their Ana Delay and Tube Overdrive pedals also look remarkably similar to the Amazon/NUX/Koko pedals. The Amazon pedals are listed as either unavailable or temporarily out of stock here in the UK, except the Delay and Looper pedals which are apparently not released over here yet.
@@SteveSterlacci so featuring them on RUclips sounds like a good way to promote the behavior. I guess. I like your content but have extreme bias when it comes to original rights and trademark laws.
@@sierratrey if anyone has the evidence of copyright infringement of these I am definitely opposed to it..boutique builders all have "their take" on the old original designs to the point where no one even knows what those original designs were. @@SteveSterlacci for the record this is not an accusation but I have to ask, do you honestly think there’s no evidence of copyright infringement? Also I’d argue by demo/showcasing these pedals you are advocating purchasing the knock-offs; or at the very least condoning it. How is rebranding legal? In fact without the registered owner’s permission it’s very much illegal. If you designed, developed and worked on something then Registered TM etc; only to find out someone used the same exact specs. They used the same colors and I’m not an electrician but the wiring would have to be similar at least. And sold it for pennies on the dollar? I’d be willing to bet rebranding would look a whole lot different to you. Again, I’m a fan of your channel. You do great work with your videos. This is just not one of them. Forgive my opinion. It in know way is meant to be an attack of your character.
I left out a key word of licensing before. I would hope, and assume, that any of the rebranded companies are paying for the license to do so. When they buy in bulk, that would usually come with permission to brand and market as they see fit. No one at amazon is out here making pedals. There are plenty of sites that offer the service. Look at Martys Swarzinator or whatever it is. Hes doing the same thing but with his own name. And hes making money off the video AND sales lol I just made a video that apparently a lot of people are interested in. This videos made me a lot of ad revenue, 250k views on it has brought me almost 2k new subs. You don't get upset your favorite actor taking a role you don't like, right? I did find the Koko pedal on Amazon France, but only the distortion (and I'm lucky, it was the only one I wanted. The OD was good too, but I have the real one, the Tube Screamer). Thx to you, Steve, I'll play the NU>X distortion (I knew the brand, and I know they do pretty good stuff I'm interested in. Saw that on a channel from Singapore where the guy tries a lot of NU>X products they send him). Thank you once again, Steve. I'll subscribe for your help.
Speaking of budget pedals, the Mosky CE Nano Chorus is fantastic. Quiet switch. No jump in volume when engaging. Sounds like a vintage BOSS chorus. The Rowin Flanger same thing. $30 pedal sounds great. Quiet switch. Play nice with the other pedals.
I've put together 14 pedal boards with anywhere fro 10 to 15 of these "budget" pedals on each. I love them! They're awesome pedals. You get a dead one now and then but Amazon's return policy make refunding or replacement a breeze. I have several KOKKO pedals, Rowin, VSN, MOSKY, Satone, Azor, which are rebranded Caline pedals as I understand it. They are all pretty much identical circuits. I have that red distortion with the KOKKO name on it. It's a great sounding distortion. Nicely scooped. Plenty of gain on tap. Brutal. The most expensive pedal I have is a Carl Martin Plexitone which is a killer pedal too of course.

What about the power source for those pedals? How you power them? They are 300ma inputs but all the multiple power output box on Amazon are mostly 100ma output.... The only 300ma outputs I found was the Mosky iso-10..….
I would get the ones you need for your style of music. It depends what you want to sound like. These cheap brands are great to sample stuff and try things out.
One man's perspective. I'm a tightwad, but love guitar effects. Many years ago I bought a DigiTech RP200 multi-effects pedal. Thought it was more cost effective than buying 50-60 pedals, since my kids were talking about college. I enjoy the hell out of monkeying around with the thing, even while knowing it's probably not what Eric Johnson uses to get his tone. It takes one plug-in, have something like 12 various amps models, a few different drum beats, and something like 28 different effects, and a tuner. The footprint is about the size of a shoebox. I am pretty confident the quality of the effects is nowhere near what you can get in a single-use pedal, probably even the cheapo ones. But it suits my needs. I'd be interested to hear from "serious" guitar folks why these types of multi-effects pedals are frowned upon...although I read that Weezer uses a Line 6 multi pedal.
My main rig is a Line 6 Helix. I use it more than any piece of gear in my professional life. Pedals are toys and snacks to be temporarily enjoyed for me lol
Line 6 make some very desirable expensive top end gear, so… it’s not the brand that matters, it’s the specific product and price that will make a difference.
I ordered a Amazon Basics DISTORTION pedal a week or so ago. What came in the mail is a KoKo branded one that acts more like a BOOST than a DISTORTION pedal.
@@SteveSterlacci I just got a looper under the brand name Afuaim. Same stuff. Pretty amazing it’s so inexpensive. I’ve been playing for 40 years and these are just as good as any base model brand name stuff. Just can’t use a battery which I don’t anyway unless I’m recording.
Thanks for the vid Steve. I've always been just a guitar and amp guy. I have tried some of the modeling processors in the past, but even though they offer a lot of tones, usually they don't have good distortion, the chorus effects aren't that great, the reverbs are kinda lame, the list of issues goes on. The newer Helix, Headrush, and Kemper stuff seems cool, but the price is over the top even for the scaled down stuff like the three button Stomp models. These low cost spedals seem like a great option for some body liked me to get introduced to using pedals. There are so many pedals out there. These cheap... no, let me say more affordable pedals do seem to do a great job. Your excellent playing also demonstrated that the ability of the pedal to produce a pleasing tone is definitely available in these pedals. I also understand that some pedals are very expensive and some players have invested heavily in their pedal arrays. I, however, lack expertise with the instrument and experience with pedals period. It just doesn't make sense at my ability level to spend obscene amounts of money to get a distinct sound. I probably wouldn't be able to produce the tone I was hunting regardless of how expensive the equipment. Also, I appreciate the simplicity of these pedals. I have had great difficulty learning what little I know about playing the guitar and don't wish to spend a lot of time learning the nuances of complicated effect pedals. So Steve once again thanks. Now I have an idea how my first pedal board is going to look.
Its honestly always simple that works best! I started using the multi fx because of overseas traveling without an amp. In that case, the multi fx become the simpler! Lol
My guitar teacher, tech and holder of best tone in town award, swears by the Nux modeler, MG-300. Me, I got an hx stomp so I can enjoy your videos more!
@@SteveSterlacci the long term is really why I bought the hx stomp. A combination of continued support, large community and finding a sixth of the price deal. Still, I knew hx would be a journey to get it to sound good, esp cause I haven't done an amp and pedal journey to know what to aim for. It really doesn't sound as good as it can out of the box. The teacher on the other hand is a utilitarian first. He can get his tone out of almost everything, so a cheap good modeler which I think has IR loading and he doesn't need to gig with is a great fit for his home recording needs. It is a good tool for him. Cheers from Greece!
Kokko actually is in the same factory as nux, amazon paid nux to create a pedal with their branding on it. So it is basically a nux peddle, and looks identical to a kokko because they are all linked
@@SteveSterlacci It is a different audience to some degree. I have a lot of pedals, but I've often asked... does it really matter if I have a DD-7 or a higher end delay? Hey Trap thank you! That means a lot. I started late at age 20, so just about 10 years into playing. An overdrive can do whatever you want it to do based on the application and style of OD it is. It can be a rhythm sound, or a lead sound depending on how it is set. Dont get so caught up "how to" and just twist some knobs until you find something you love. If it sounds good, it is good! Good idea for a video though
Great video... wondering if you noticed anything that sounded like frequency cuts coming from them? The screamer sounds like it might have a low cut or a high boost going on
Damn !! I have to admit these sound pretty damn good, esp considering how cheap they are....shame it looks as tho you cannot get them anymore from Amazon( aside from the Delay pedal, that is..) Most music stores around me are stuck in the stone ages with their pedal selection. None of the cool new innovative ones. And especially no cheap, budget brands like nux, joyo, etc. They just want to charge you $200 for the same pedals they've had since 1999. @@SteveSterlacci NUX Konsequent delay was more advanced from the beginning, btw, it has two different delay sounds that can be switched by holding foot switch down for two seconds. NUX, Mooer, Moen, Joyo and Caline make most of the pedals. In the West we have this illusion of lot of small factories throwing things together with a nearly literate staff etc. The truth is thousands of companies are cutting edge high tech. Hi tech makes things cheap ...cheap overhead which China has like tax, transportation costs, heat, electricity etc takes it from cheap to silly cheap. Mooer make 2000 pedals a day ...and it is usually a single model. The products are designed to fit in the same box and they are only pre drilled for a handful of choices. Reliability is BIG! The parts may not be gourmet spec but their failure rate is nano!
I bought a Mooer "Modfactory" because it was inexpensive, and looked fun. I've had it for two years now, and its been my 'go to' for trippy modulation effects, and I've used it for both guitar, and keyboards - having it, hearing how it sounds, and what it does has seriously led me to question the whole 'boutique' culture, which is so incredibly blown out with products now that it's just expensive, and confusing... Just last week, I was comparing the EHX "Torn Speaker" and the DOD Carcossa (both under 100.00) against a batch of Boutiques ranging from 150.00 to 250.00, and ended up walking out with the Torn Speaker because it just sounded better.
I'll never not tour with an all in 1 digital unit as a sideman (in my current mindset lol). As far as reliability and trust... that's a big idk and i doubt it. But... you could buy 3 backups of each and have them on hand and still be way under a boutique price
@@SteveSterlacci Dammit, you beat me to it; _anything_ can fail and so whenever I consider making an investment, the cost is double because I buy at least two. Just weird considering they were insanely popular when released and sold out so fast. Why were they profitable enough for Amazon to introduce but not keep in stock? It seems like they must have made a profit.Or is it just THAT much easier to sell other brands versions and let them deal with manufacturing costs. Must not have been profitable enough.

Rebranding isn't new, most electronics are made in Shenzhen and the scale If it is huge. You buy an order of bulk and they just repaint them. That is why Amazon is flooded with the same products that have many different brand names. And as you noted, Amazon does the same thing with a lot of their Basics line.
I hate to admit it, but 10 years later im finding made in china, vietnam, malasia, Indonesia, are still working
and working well.
I really appreciate that! Thanks for listening so close
I was wondering this too. I didn’t see them listed anymore.
Same pedals, diff brand! Interesting stuff
@@SteveSterlacci It's called OEM. Nothing new
@@binshuo thanks
I would (and will) buy these pedals in a heartbeat. The price of pedals is ridiculous given the parts involved and calling something 'boutique' is just a way of justifying being ripped off by gaining some sonic quality that just is in the imagination.
Starting to agree with this more and more!
With said parts being sourced China (most likely) !
For real. A circuit is a circuit.
@@Fausto_4841
TL;DR - You're pretty much right, just look at what Behringer has done in the last ~30 years.
Thanks so much! Glad to help where I can. Best of luck with your playing too!
@@SteveSterlacci Buying in bulk and then if it is popular, making it themselves. I was so happy to get away from that place!
The tone you get with that Les Paul is Awesome... Norlin era Customs have some kind of a special sauce ..
Thanks ! So many people write off norlins!
Nice addition to the list! Will look into twinote. I guess because they're a bit more expensive, people passed on them 🤔🤔🤔
@@SteveSterlacci Could be. Although, they still appear to be rather cheep via Amazon over here: £21.99 for the OD pedal and £33.90 for the delay 😊
Nice! The delay is $45 here

Man those look really cool! Was checking one out as well
Great vid Steve!

It is one of the things Amazon is known for. Rebranding existing products, Selling it for less in an attempt to crush the little guy.
Yep. In this field there are a lot of cheap rebrands.
I'm just here to demo products. I am no advocate for copying stuff. They buy in bulk and rebrand, they have the right to do so as crappy as it is
@@SteveSterlacci for the record this is not an accusation but I have to ask, do you honestly think there’s no evidence of copyright infringement?
Lol I appreciate you liking the content. I do wish the same enthusiasm was shown on my other videos as well
I did find the Koko pedal on Amazon France, but only the distortion (and I'm lucky, it was the only one I wanted.
Thank you! I appreciate the support.
I've heard a lot of good things about them!
Brutal.
The most expensive pedal I have is a Carl Martin Plexitone which is a killer pedal too of course.
a year later, im looking into these pedals. they are back in stock. Im building my first pedal board on a budget to learn with.
They will be great for that
I really don't understand stuff like "don't play blues with a distortion pedal, that's not what it's for". If it sounds good, it IS good.
Thats a hard concept for some to grasp! I agree with ya
What they meant to say was "don't play classical music with a distortion pedal". But then again, if it sounds good.....

11:26 SO AWESOME!
Thanks! I just bought the Distortion pedal on Amazon by KOKKO
Hope you dig!
I ordered a Amazon Basics DISTORTION pedal a week or so ago. What came in the mail is a KoKo branded one that acts more like a BOOST than a DISTORTION pedal.
Well, the Paul took them to the next level.
I’d buy em all. I like the compact size.
Theyre not bad at all!
I had good luck with Donner minis.....Twinote fuzz pi is great for price
Lol

Me, I got an hx stomp so I can enjoy your videos more!
Interesting! May be worth checking out. Will be tough to beat the hx long term though! I appreciate you watching. Thank-you!

For sure! Def curious how they will hold up
I bought a Mooer "Modfactory" because it was inexpensive, and looked fun. Just last week, I was comparing the EHX "Torn Speaker" and the DOD Carcossa (both under 100.00) against a batch of Boutiques ranging from 150.00 to 250.00, and ended up walking out with the Torn Speaker because it just sounded better.
when he said google he sounded like the mandolorian lmao
This is the way
yessss 👏🏼👏🏼😂
@@katelynrenee04 i still rewind the last 2 minutes of the finale 4 times a day 🤣🤣🤣

Best scene since the originals!
Great video! Coulda used more G chords tho
Instead D?!
@@SteveSterlacci on second thought, make it all Eb11’s
Theres more than 1 Eb?!
@@SteveSterlacci prolly lol
My question is, would you take these on tour?
I'll never not tour with an all in 1 digital unit as a sideman (in my current mindset lol). As far as reliability and trust... that's a big idk and i doubt it. But... you could buy 3 backups of each and have them on hand and still be way under a boutique price
@@SteveSterlacci
Dammit, you beat me to it; _anything_ can fail and so whenever I consider making an investment, the cost is double because I buy at least two.
For a floor unit, in spite of all the ongoing marketing hype, I have found that nothing comes close to the old Digitech GNX4 and I now own *six* of these things. I have so many because the original owners didn't have the patience to figure them out and so long-story-short, I have less than $1000 in six, as-new devices. 👍
@@AdaptivePhenix DigiTech RP2000 I bought new almost 25 years ago still going strong, but I have a GNX3&4 as well. There's no way to build a comparable pedalboard for the same $.
Just checked they are all sold out except the delay which is selling for $38. Guess everyone has been buying them.
Check my follow up in the pinned comment! Can still get them!
Anyone wanna sell their amazon basics delay pedal? Its not on the website anymore and its the only one im lackin
crazy how hard they are to find now
they sound awesome damn!!
Not bad right?!
OMG! Just like in Canada with a pack of smokes. They all look alike but different.
2 years later and these pedals are still basically sold out and unavailable. Other than the compression pedal they're not on the site anymore.
It is no crime to want to pay less for something. However be careful what you wish for. Do we all one day want to work for Amazon or Google, I hope not.
Skynet?!
@@SteveSterlacci Good one! LOL
🤣🤣🤣
@@SteveSterlacci Speaking of Skynet. If you've never seen the TV show from 2009-2010 "Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles". Check it out. If you like scifi action adventure. The show is awesome. And it doesn't hurt that Summer Glau is the good terminator in the series. Amazing writing and production value. Fox blew it by putting up against other popular shows so it never got the viewing ratings it needed to survive. There are 2 full seasons available. Stay cool, Gale
Rebranding isn't new, most electronics are made in Shenzhen and the scale If it is huge. You buy an order of bulk and they just repaint them. Companies are aware name is everything, so I'd probably bet that even the big boys have some rebrands in their silo, especially for the more accessible pricepoint product. Maybe it's my attitude towards pricing, or the whole married with kids type budget, but if it sounds good, unless it's something extra unique I'm not going to moan about paying less for the same thing.
I'd used the Kokko stuff for two years before the Amazon Basics range came out and I as screaming on every forum that it was a big scam. I tried telling Gear Gods this but he fobbed me off in his comments.
For the money the Vibrato is the best.
what about them is a scam? they seem like just rebranded import pedals
@@SteveSterlacci I think the price was much better in America but in Europe 2-3 times the price of the original units. Eh, I'm hyperbolic about it I guess but you had no idea how annoying it was to see people talking about these "new" designs... when they had been around for years.
I’m in love with that tele. What is it?
Check out Iconic Guitars out of San Diego! Tell them I sent ya
Cool video, Steve. These pedals sound decent enough and are certainly affordable, but for some reason they aggravate the shit outta me.
They just seem to cheapen everything associated with the electric guitar. I realize it’s a weird attitude about them but I’ll bet I’m not the only one.
Thanks for checking it out! I felt that way at first too. After reading and hearing a bunch of comments, they have their place. The same player interested in buying expensive boutique will pass on these. But the beginner, young kid or player on a budget will hopefully use these and make some great music!
@@SteveSterlacci , Youre absolutely right. I’m probably just pissed because over the years I’ve spent a ton of cash on boutique pedals that really don’t sound all that much better than these budget pedals.
@@yankeepeters2270 at least they'll hold their value! These will always bee $20-$45 pedals
Sound circuits are really not very hard to solder.... Seriously, if you're into amps, guitar effects... maybe look at making your own pedals. If you're looking at £20 units, you're not that fussed about quality.... and the satisfaction of playing your own kit is pretty good. It's a good hobby. I build with wood rather than aluminium, but thats just personal preference. People think circuit board are some kind of mystical thing... they're not. Pretty easy to put together.
great idea!
About a week before you put out this video I was looking on the box for a saphue vintage pedal; which I had read was also a Kmise . The box had a web site on it. szgetmusic.c Which if you go to the guitar effects pedals on the left handed menu you will find out there is 15 pages of pedals....joyo, mooer, nux, aroma who puts out tomsline pedals and many many more. They are a mass production company who if you buy a large order they will make them and silk screen whatever name on it you want. Its worth checking out. very cool. Solves alot of the questions concerning these "cheap" pedals that look alot alike. They also list alot of the specifics of each pedal and description.
very cool! I will check on that. Thanks for sharing!!!
@@SteveSterlacci Pretty sure that is a marketer/exporter website, and has nothing to do with either the manufacture or branding of the pedals. Their inventory looks incomplete for every brand I have a passing awareness of. For example, they have none of the newer Caline pedals, but some of the discontinued pedals; for Joyo, they have Dr. J and almost nothing else; for Aroma they have the Tomsline mini pedals but none of the full form pedals; etc. And it appears they are selling straight up counterfeits as well.
If you go to AliExpress, you will find many, many, many little exporters selling these pedals, some of which will happily imply they are the manufacturer.
Here is a list of China pedal brands I've seen .... most appear to be just rebrands, OEMs ... and some branded lines even appear to pick and choose from two or more manufacturers to create their brand line.
