  • Introductory example problem applying the moment distribution method on a statically indeterminate beam. This is a good place to start if you have never applied the moment distribution method for structural analysis.
    Part 1 demonstrates the application of the moment distribution method in detail.
    Part 2 shows you how to draw shear and moment diagrams once you have determined the member end moments.

    I can't believe how easier it is for the newer generations of engineering students to learn these concepts. When I was in University in the late 80s we had very limited (dial-up !!) Internet and certainly no RUclips. We had to haul our a%% in the campus library, dig through pages and pages of other books (in addition to our textbooks) , find material that was better explained than our prof would explain, find coins to insert in the photocopying machines (most engineering textbooks were 4" thick and hence heavy!) and photocopy relevant material. Now one can search 24/7 online to find solved examples that are well explained (such as structurefree does!).......
    Well done sir !!
    Then again, generations before mine used slide rules to design skyscrapers, so I shouldn't be complaining.
    To those of you that are studying engineering, it is a rough, tough and long road but well worth it. Tough it out; work and study hard and at the end it will pay off.
    Apologies for the long post. Keep up the great work you do 'structurefree" !!

      so true man. I acknowledge how super lucky i am. Don't think i could've been an engineer if it weren't for youtube. RUclips has taught me everything for maths, I taught myself calculus watching youtube videos, all the way from even before precalc. you're very right, we have it much much easier. and i'm so thankful for it, because it gives me the opportunity to become actually try and become an engineer whereas otherwise the odds would've been stacked against me, such as in your times. It's much easier now but it's still very hard nonetheless.

    I wanted to extend a personal thank you for this video. I'm studying for the October PE exam and a question on a practice exam asked to solve for a reaction using this method. Never heard of it, let alone used it. This video saved me what would have been days maybe weeks worth of time trying to study and understand this method from a book or online source that probably would have taken me days to find in the first place. Absolutely brilliantly explained, clear, concise, excellently done!

    k=3EI/L is used when the beam has a pin/roller on the free end or where the beam structure terminates. In this example, the roller is supporting the continuous beam and a moment can be carried across the beam at the support. See the moment distribution method example 3 video, it has a beam segment that uses k=3EI/L.

    Hey mate. Your videos really help all of us. They are probably the only thing that ensures we pass uni. And by "we", I mean the entire cohort of engineers every year. Appreciate it.
    We just don't understand, in this instance, how you got the zeros in the purple line at joint B. Could you please clarify?

    • @marlam5478
      @marlam5478 6 лет назад

      If you add the moments on each side of the joint B ( 52.083-3.456=48.627 and -40-8.627=-48.627) are equal. that means are balanced and you don't need to apply again the distribution factor. The iteration process finish when you get moment equilibrium at interior supports.
      better later than never :)

    • @bradvincent2586
      @bradvincent2586 3 года назад

      @@marlam5478 Okay, can you still try to reexplain this? I don't understand. My professor kept doing the iterations until the distributions were negligible and small. What happens if you have seven iterations, do you have to keep adding up both sides of the joint til you figure out if they are even?

    Professor, please lets see a worked moment distribution solution to a "cube", "cube beside cube", "cube on cube", and larger number of cubes (rooms that is). a cube is four columns joined with beams above and below (or foundation on a ground floor). a roof can be an "area" of spread out load (like reinforced concrete). i have been surprised with so many books stop after beam, column and a 2d portal of two columns and a beam on top; and then plenty books dive into matrices.
