Their previous album to this, "Gretchen Goes to Nebraska" is a certified classic. "Over My Head", "Summerland", "The Difference (In the Garden of St. Anne's-on-the-Hill)", and "I'll Never Be the Same" are among the tracks on that album that you would love. I hadn't heard this one yet so I'm pleased to hear it too.

Agreed with all the above! I approached King's X via this album Faith hope love and it's fabulous. The heavy, bluesy guitar riffs and melodies are so soulful. Though they've toured quite often here in the UK, I've not seen them live...yet!

Kings X is an amalgam---makes me think of what you might get if you combined the Beatles and Aerosmith, sent them to Texas and had them listen to a lot of Dixie Dregs and Earth, Wind and Fire. A lot of elements combined into a very unique hard rock sound.

Huge KX fan. But rock radio did not play them much (or at all here in Canada). Doug’s voice was probably too Motown for young listeners, and the music was lumped into the metal camp unfortunately. Just a little too quirky for the masses.

I have fond memories of this album when it was first released in 1990. Their prior album, Gretchen goes to Nebraska, was a such a breath of fresh air back then. With the Faith, Hope, and Love album they seemed to be poised for major success. But unfortunately, it didn't happen, which I always thought was criminal. I hope you guys continue to dive into their music as they were one of the best and original bands that came out during that period bar none

Was fortunate enough in late 90s to help book them at a small venue in the San Joaquin Valley when they were in between venues. 150 people showed up at a small auditorium and got the most intimate show of their lives. Hi Nick, Hi Lexi. It's brilliant you are reacting to King's X....a brilliant but underated band.
A mixture of styles...prog, funky, metal.
So many cracking albums...Dogman is superb ...the title track is a good start.
Just a fact to link to Dream Theater guys ...the lead singer Doug Pinnick is the vocalist who sang on Lines In The Sand...on the album Falling Into Infinity.
Thank you so much for all your reactions.
Looking forward to your next offering. Peace and love from Liverpool UK 👍✌️🤘☮️

Here's the thing about that extended time changing outro -- they do that live, exactly, every time. Like precision. There are three voices, and they are also the three players. Also they're great people. And the other record is Dogman, but you should listen to Out of the Silent Planet and Gretchen goes to Nebraska first.

I'm not surprised, but not just for N&L ;) MOST people seem not to have heard them, even if they are into many other bands. And that peers "know" of the band and reputation. But I've seen a few reactors listen . . . but not get it. But even though people pick stuff from "Dogman", I always believe its the "previous" albums that will entice people to want more. Its THIS era that people get to hear their "3 part harmonies" :). Apparently the band said they are going to feature more of that again!

Aaaah yesssss. Thank so much for doing this. You’ve now entered the rabbit hole that is King’s X.
As a few have said. The album before this - ‘Gretchen’ is considered by many as their best and one of the greatest albums ever made. I would love to see you do ‘Summerland’ and ‘Plieades’ from this album to have a true KX experience. Also ‘Goldilox’ from their first album is one of the best songs ever written. Doug Pinnick - vocals and bass was 37 when their debut landed. Think about that!
You should absolutely check out ‘Dogman’ and ‘pillow’ from the album Dogman as many consider this as close second behind ‘Gretchen’ as their greatest work. First 6 albums are all 10/10 and you can’t say that about many artists at all. Most underrated band of all time? Damn straight! Enjoy the journey 💙🎶🤘

A little trivia for Nick that I know you'll enjoy, regarding the debut album by U.K., with Allan Holdsworth on guitar.
In an interview with the TeamRock site in 2016, Ty Tabor of King's X selected the album as his top pick in a "5 Essential Guitar Albums" list, stating, "I had never heard anybody think about playing guitar the way that [Holdsworth] plays on that record."

Their second album Gretchen Goes to Nebraska is technically a concept album. I read the story and still don't have a clue. That aside, the album is outstanding and should be heard as a whole, though many of the songs stand out on their own. One of my favorite albums.
Scott Ian of Anthrax said a few years ago that they were the best live band he ever toured with. Like Anthrax and Metallica, King's X got their start on Megaforce Records.

I can't believe I missed this reaction!! In addition to being a HUGE Ptree and SW fan, I am just as equally crazy about Kings X. One of the most criminally under-rated bands ever! And beyond that, Ty Tabor (their guitarist) is one of the most criminally underrated guitarists - ever! And as much as I like Kings X, which is ALOT, Ty Tabor's solo stuff is, in my humble opinion, is even better! I will send you some suggestions!!! Have seen both but Ty solo is great also! He is also in a side band called The Jelly Jam, which is him, the bass from Dream Theather, and Rod Morganstern on drums who used to play with both the Dixie Dregs and then Winger. I gotta get you guys some Ty Tabor solo suggestions to react to. Again, love all that you guys do!!!

You almost HAVE to start with the first two Kings X albums. Those albums define them the best, but they have so much excellent material it'd be difficult to name all my favorite tracks

Instant subscription..... Love from England, been a fan since their first album and i haven't missed a tour since the second album.... I call them England's house band because despite being American i have never seen a gig over here that isn't packed out or totally passionate about these guys.... Criminally underrated and if anything the live versions are even better.... Welcome to the wonderful family of king's x fanatics 👍

Although they have progressive elements Kings X are a melting pot of many genres ..... one of a kind band (unless you count some elements of The Awful Truth / Galactic Cowboys ..... and maybe some Freak Kitchen).

And Atomic Opera! They were all from the Houston area around the time King's X started getting some recognition.
I've seen King's X 12 or 13 times since 1989 and got to see Galactic Cowboys open for them several times. Those were nights of such wonderful vocal harmonies on top of crunchy grooves. Love it!

I am a musician and King's X will always be in my top 5 bands of my life. Please do more King's X reactions. Many great song choices below in the comments.

I've been watching you two for a few months now. I'm a huge fan of DT but was already a fan of King's X when I discovered Dream Theater. From what I've noticed, you seem to really connect emotionally to music in much the same way I do. King's X has a huge array of music in which to choose but I would love to watch you hear Flies & Blue Skies for the first time.
My recommendations for new King's X fans (including Nick n Lex) would be:
    Dogman
    Over My Head
    It's Love
    Goldilox
    Groove Machine
    Prisoner
    Summerland
    Mission
We Are Finding Who We Are
    Moanjam
Dream Theater collaborated with Doug Pinnick on the Falling Into Infinity album for the track, Lines In The Sand. King's X opened for DT for a few shows during the summer of 2002. If memory serves, John Myung (who is friends with Ty Tabor) was instrumental in introducing King's X to Dream Theater.

*VERY happy you are sharing this with your fans and the uninitiated :D*
(. . . don't forget ELP and Yes too with the "list", more to come! ;).
So I believe I wrote some suggestions on the "post-it", but I have to write details for "Box 1" (the Post-it talks about their influences, "sound" and each member). This was a HUGE surprise guys!
I LOVE that you are hearing this track to introduce you to the band :D. The crazy END transitions took awhile for me to figure out! And I would imagine for another band who played it almost nightly on the last season of "The Late Show with David Letterman"! Paul Schaffer, the conductor/keyboardist for "The Worlds Most Dangerous Band", got to talk to the band and gave them permission to play it as they went on breaks for commercials: (So its happening again! Links or whatever are deleting my comments); please look-up:
"King's X song bits played on the Late Show" here at Yt.
Though I really want you to start with a couple of other tracks before you get to "Dogman", just to hear more of their _styles_ and harmonies. But yes, they are a VERY "groovy" band, as it says on the back of my Kings X shirts; "May The Groove Be With You" :D
Keep in mind they are just a "Trio", and the excellent Jerry Gaskill plays a small kit, its either a 5-6 piece drum kit. He also sings occasionally, and sounds like George Harrison. Ty Tabor, the guitarist with the killer "tone", is also a Lead Vocalist who has a John Lennon voice. And Doug "dUg" Pinnick (the Lead voice here, and is guest on DT's "Lines in the Sand") plays regular 4 - 6 string and "12" string Bass, full of groove and many times overdriven, so its LOW and heavy.
His vocals have a variety of Gospel, Soul, R&B, Funk, Rock and his own unique timbre (pron: Tam-ber), and the guys do "3 Part Harmonies" (more-so in the earlier albums), and they can have that "Beatles" quality in their music, with; Rock, Metal, Prog, Doom (in the later years), Grunge, Soul, Funk, R&B and the kitchen sink! And then the "3 Part Harmonies"!
Ty has been in various bands as well on the side (Platypus, Jelly Jam, and a guest with various Bands/musicians), and solo efforts. He is known for his Guitar "tone" as well . . .
Get this; He names his main influences as the Beatles, Allan Holdsworth, Johnny Winter, Ace Frehley, Mel Galley, Brian May, Alex Lifeson, Phil Keaggy, and the original Alice Cooper band. :D!!!
They are working on a new album and have talked about bringing the "Harmonies" back! So that will be great to hear again.
Haha! I LOVE that you guys at the beginning were trying to get the "groove", and then the "Funky" parts came in and you 2 were RIGHT in the pocket bobbing your heads (Lexi's "neck sway"!) and moving your bodies to the groove :D. Then, trying to anticipate the "transitions" and Lexi making a face, and looking in the corner of her eye to Nick to see if he'd be on it and she breaks-up laughing :D!
Please dig in guys, as you said . . . . they have soo many different sounds, I HOPE many more get into them.
I'll add some suggestions in a few minutes! Keep in mind too, they have "7" more albums after the discography I sent you :).

While Nirvana gets a credit for the 90's shift in culture.,Kings X, The Cult, Living Colour and others came out in the late 80's. predated grunge, opening the door Nirvana and others walked through.
    1) King (88)
    2) Goldilox (88)
    3) Over My Head (89)
    4 Summerland (89)

*I'll just add a few suggestions because the Kings X fans will have their own recommendations . . .*
This is probably my FAVE track from them (off their 2nd album) with *Doug Pinnick* again on lead vocals (Bassist):
    Summerland
The Train (from the album _after_ your anthology box-set. From the album "Ear Candy")
    Prisoner
    Over My Head
(I'm one that really dis-likes pop music where the "Chorus" is basically the whole song and they repeat and repeat and repeat it. But THIS song; "Over my Head" is an exception because of the groove, the music, dUg's emotional vocals . . . and Ty's solo! One day, you'll have to experience the LIVE version from "Love Live from London", that will blow your socks off!).
    Lost in Germany
    The Groove Machine
    Complain
Move (a heavier, somewhat "moodier" but groovy track from their last album "XV")
    Everywhere I Go
*Ty Tabor* (Guitarist) on lead vocals:
    Pleiades
(This is a song if you were sitting outside, looking at the night sky. Find a place where both of you can go and have it cranking in the car while stargazing :).
Dream in my Life (both Ty and Doug)
    Freedom
Not Just For the Dead (dUg and Ty sharing leads, with 3 part harmonies)
Mississippi Moon (this one will also surprise you)
    Life Going By
    - Hope you enjOy the journey \m/.

You both are so awesome!!! KingsX are soooo great live…including this song!!! Their early stuff is perfection …but their 4th album and something off the album Earcandy is a treat as well. Big Big sound from this trio…they all sing those awesome harmonies,a nod to the Beatles. Also listen to Dugs awesome 12string bass!! Ty is a legendary guitarist…that sound is so unique….and Jerry is ALWAYS in the pocket just a tad behind the beat….such a groove machine!!!!

The first time I heard King's X in the mid 90s was in a weekly 2 hour radioshow of BFBS (British forces radio), which I listened to for 15 years. The DJ Kal Sutherland introduced me to so many bands, I would not have heard in the pre-internetradio-era; there was no german radio station in my area, which played such great music ... I found out from A as Ayreon to Z (I don't know) but T stands for Trivium, another underrated american metal band.
I asked my older brother for a King's X CD and he gave me Dogman. I started listening and I was blown away. Like Alexia said in the reaction video "such a strong beginning", that's so typical for King's X. As Nick said, they are a bit proggy, but I for myself called it grooveRock or riffRock, because that's the trademark of many of their songs. I know 10 of their CDs, but Dogman is my favourite, I like the mix of heavy groovy songs, slower songs, a pure blues song, even a 51 second punk song. We were born to be loved is representative for King's X music and the end reminds me of the end of a great Opeth song - Deliverance - Opeth fans will know, what I'm talking about. Looking forward for more KIng's X ..... and maybe Opeth 🙂

    Sly and the Family Sabbath...
Such an interesting band. They really made an effort to continue exploring their artistic side and not get overly 'stuck.' As they grew, they let the music grow, too.
Maybe check out "What is This?" from the 1st album from 1988, for a glimpse at another side of their style. Still big riff, harmonies and heavy groove.
Then try 'Ocean' from the Tape Head album for a contrast.
Lastly, "Julie" from the 'XV' album will round it for for a least one song from each of the members on lead vocals.
    Great reaction!
