I was a big tennis fan during the Borg-Connors-McEnroe era, but fell out of it sometime later, but still remember fondly watching players like Stan Smith, Eddie Dibbs, and Guillermo Villas. I've now come back to the game, with the help of those on YT, to relive your glory days Mr Smith and, I must say, I'm enjoyin the hell out of myself. The tennis and the players seemed more elegant and graceful. I'm so glad I can go back in time to when I loved the game so much.

Love Stan Smith, my first tennis idol. That 1972 final was widely held to be the greatest, at least till 2008.

I take the 1972 final over Federer-Nadal any day of the week.

Saw him on TV today in the Royal Box at Wimbledon and it brought back such wonderful memories of the epic 1972 final, the first one I properly remember. Happy days!

Me too I was 10 and idolised Nastase (but Smith was class on and off the court). I actually remember Goolagong winning the year before but have no recollection of Newcombe winning that year

Classy champion. I remember reading a great account of the Davis Cup tie between the US and Romania. The Romanian team was Nastase and Tiriac.

amazing he can call Ilie a friend, considering the way Nastase behaved during their Davis Cup encounters. Stan must have the countenance of a Jackie Robinson or Arthur Ashe.

I bought his name-brand tennis shoes - were very comfortable and well made. Comes across as a real gentleman and decent chap.
