  • Today I am reviewing my unconventional layer setup. I like to use the most ultralight items I can whenever possible. Here's how I incorporate lightweight hiking/mountaineering equipment into my hunting setup.

A puffer jacket is rapidly becoming my favorite tool - I do hate the added noise factor of drawing a bow when the slick shell material crinkles against the shell jacket. My solution is to put a soft thin fleece layer between the puffer and my outer layer. This is pretty effective on days with any kind of wind to cover the sound plus it’s all highly packable.

Great info. I too use down as a mid layer and it’s unreal how thin, light and warm a jacket or vest is when filled with 850+ fill power down.

I've used Military stuff A LOT. It's good...but it's not as good as the stuff the mountain climbing and backpacking companies come up with. The MILSPEC stuff is more affordable though. Pros and cons, right?
